Adsorbents Derived from Xylan Hemicellulose with Removal Properties of Pollutant Metals

The adsorption capacity of hydrogels derived from modified xylan hemicellulose has been tested in order to develop new bio-based adsorbent materials useful for removing metal ions pollutants,such as Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ)and Pb(Ⅱ)from an aqueous *** was extracted from bleached kraft pulp of eucalyptus and subsequently modified with different proportions of functional sulfonic acid groups(HA3-HA7)and sulfonate groups(HS30-HS70)to generate *** results showed that all the synthesized hydrogels were capable of adsorbing metal ions,being the hydrogels with 30%and 50%xylan the ones that presented the highest adsorption *** capacity studies at different initial concentrations revealed that at an initial concentration of 300 mg·L-1,the HA3 hydrogel presented an adsorption capacity of 193mg Pb(Ⅱ),182 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 66 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HA5 hydrogel presented a capacity of 185 mg Pb(Ⅱ),113 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 48 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HS30 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption of 205 mg Pb(Ⅱ),174 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 71 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g hydrogel,and HS50 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption capacity of 273 mg Pb(Ⅱ),143 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 45 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** results show that modified Xylan hemicellulose is a promising adsorbent for removal Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ),and Pb(Ⅱ)ions from aqueous solutions.

The global pandemic,coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),has significantly affected tourism,especially in Spain,as it was among the first countries to be affected by the pandemic and is among the world’s biggest tourist *** market values are responding to the evolution of the pandemic,especially in the case of tourist ***,being able to quantify this relationship allows us to predict the effect of the pandemic on shares in the tourism sector,thereby improving the response to the crisis by policymakers and ***,a dynamic regression model was developed to predict the behavior of shares in the Spanish tourism sector according to the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic in the medium *** has been confirmed that both the number of deaths and cases are good predictors of abnormal stock prices in the tourism sector.

Food-derived peptides with inhibitory capacity for HMG-CoA reductase activity: a potential nutraceutical for hypercholesterolemia

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading global cause of mortality and disease burden. Statins are the most prescribed lipid-lowering drugs to treat hypercholesterolemia and prevent CVDs. The biochemical mechanism of statins consists of competitive inhibition of the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase enzyme (HMG-CoAR)， the limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. Due to statin intolerance in some patient groups， the search for new inhibitors is a field of great interest. This review focusses on the studies reporting the inhibitory effect of protein hydrolysates and biopeptides on the HMG-CoAR enzyme activity. The analysis of the action mechanism and physicochemical characteristics of the HMG-CoAR inhibitory peptides revealed that the molecular weight， amino acid composition， charge， and polarity are key aspects of the interaction with the HMG-CoAR enzyme. In conclusion， this review reveals the potential of using food peptides as new cholesterol-lowering agents and opens a new interesting field of research. However， clinical approaches are mandatory to confirm their therapeutic hypercholesterolemic effect.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest(OHCA)is one of the three leading causes of death in industrialized countries.[1,2]Some studies have described the impact of the first COVID-19 pandemic wave in terms of the number of cases and OHCA survival rates in various regions,[3-5]but few have addressed the relationship between the successive phases and how they affected OHCA.[6,7]The 14-d cumulative incidence peaked at more than 990 cases,with these rates remaining above 200 for an eight-month period between 15 March 2020 and 15 March 2021 in Madrid,Spain.

Successful treatment of psychosis induced by interferon alpha and ribavirin with paliperidone:first case reported

Several clinical studies have shown a large number of mental symptoms by immunomodulatory treatment with interferon (IFN). The most frequently described symptoms are depression, suicidal behaviour, manic symptoms, anxiety, psychosis and delirium, associated with other non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, psychomotor retardation, decreased libido, insomnia, difficulty in concentration and attention. Having a history of mental disorder contraindicates the use of IFN-alpha. These adverse effects that affect the mental state appear usually at the beginning of the treatment (most after 3 weeks of treatment). The incidence of psychotic episodes is low and the episodes usually remit when treatment is interrupted;only some cases require antipsychotic treatment. We present the case of a patient affected with hepatitis C who began to present self-referential delirious symptoms after receiving the treatment with IFN and who was successfully treated with paliperidone. This patient could be classified within the group of high-risk psychiatric patients given the family history of schizophrenia and his personal history of illegal drug consumption. The pharmacological actions of paliperidone are similar to other high potency atypical antipsychotics.丁he receptorbinding profile of paliperidone most closely resembles that of risperidone and ziprasidone. Paliperidone differs from risperidone and most other antipsychotics by its relatively low extent of enzymatic hepatic metabolism. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case described that was successfully treated with paliperidone.

Attachment style,which has been theorized to be rooted in childhood bonding experiences,influences adult cognitive,emotional and interpersonal *** its relationship with early experiences,research indicates that the continuity of attachment style across childhood and adulthood is only partial,being a malleable tendency that is shaped throughout development,with an increasing influence of genetics,as it occurs in other cognitive and behavioral *** research indicates that up to 45% of the variability in anxious and 39% in avoidant adult attachment style could be explained by genetic causes,but the precise mechanisms remain unclear.A narrative review is conducted analyzing the existing literature regarding the implication of candidate genes related to oxytocin,dopaminergic pathways,serotonergic pathways and brainderived neurotrophic factor in adult attachment,with both vulnerability and differential susceptibility approaches,yielding mixed *** highlight the lack of genome-wide studies and the scarcity of epigenetic *** on the existing data,we conclude that the genetics of adult attachment is an area that requires further research to clarify its etiological role and that it should be preferably approached as an interaction between nature and nurture.

AIM To determine a potential relationship between serum undercarboxylated(uc OC) concentration and cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes(T2D) patients and healthy subjects(HS).METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on 140 subjects classified into two groups, 70 with T2D and 70 HS. Medical history and physical examination with anthropometric measurements were obtained from all subjects. Body fat percentage was determined by bioelectrical impendency analysis. Serum uc OC concentration was determined by enzyme immunoassay,while serum levels of insulin and hsC RP were obtained using high sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Insulin resistance was determined using the homeostasis model assessment-IR. Lipid profile [triglycerides,total cholesterol(TC), high-density lipoproteins(HDL-c),low density lipoproteins(LDL-c), very low-density lipoproteins] was determined by spectrophotometry and standard formulas when applicable. RESULTS The T2D patient group showed significantly higher values of waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, systolic blood pressure(SBP), diastolic blood pressure(DBP),current smoking, and alcohol use when compared to the HS group(P < 0.05). We observed a significantly lower serum ucO C concentration in T2D than in HS(1.5 ± 1.4vs 2.3 ± 1.8, P < 0.05). In the whole study population,ucO C concentration was inversely correlated with body mass index(BMI)(r =-0.236, P < 0.05), fasting plasma glucose(r =-0.283, P < 0.01) and HDL-c(r =-0.255,P < 0.05); and positively correlated with LDL-c/HDL-c ratio(r = 0.306, P < 0.05) and TC/HDL-c ratio(r =0.284, P < 0.05). In the T2D group, serum uc OC concentration was inversely correlated with BMI(r =-0.310, P < 0.05) and body-fat percentage(r =-0.311,P < 0.05), and positively correlated with DBP(r = 0.450,P < 0.01). The acceptability properties, total phenolic content, and antioxidant potential of four (red, green, brown, cream) desi chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars from the World Germplasm Bank were evaluated. Protein content of the grains varied from 20.12% to 28.85% (dw), highest for Cream ICC3421. The water absorption capacity (WAC) and cooking time (CT) of the whole grains ranged from 97.7 to 117.5 g water/100 g seeds (ww) and from 109.5 to 193.5 min, respectively;the highest WAC and lowest CT corresponded to Cream ICC3421 cultivar. The total phenolic content (TPC) and total hydrophilic antioxidant activity (AoxA) [oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value] of desi chickpea cultivars varied from 746 to 1.286 μg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g sample (dw) and from 43.9 to 53.9 μmol Trolox equivalents (TE)/g sample (dw);Brown ICC3512 showed the highest ORAC value. Chickpea cultivars could contribute significantly to the management and/or prevention of degenerative diseases associated with free radical damage.

AIM: The pathogenesis of hypogonadism in liver cirrhosis is not well understood. Previous results from our laboratory showed that IGF-1 deficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonadism of cirrhosis. The administration of IGF-1 for a short period of time reverted the testicular atrophy associated with advanced experimental *** aim of this study was to establish the historical progression of the described alterations in the testes,explore testicular morphology, histopathology, cellular proliferation, integrity of testicular barrier and hypophysogonadal axis in rats with no ascitic ***: Male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis induced with carbon tetrachloride (CC14) for 11 wk,were allocated into two groups (n = 12, each) to receive recombinant IGF-1 (2 μg/100 g·d, sc) for two weeks or vehicle. Healthy rats receiving vehicle were used as control group (n = 12).RESULTS: Compared to controls, rats with compensated cirrhosis showed a normal testicular size and weight and very few histopathological testicular ***, these animals showed a significant diminution of cellular proliferation and a reduction of testicular transferrin expression. In addition, pituitary-gonadal axis was altered, with significant higher levels of FSH (P<0.001 vs controls) and increased levels of LH in untreated cirrhotic animals.
