The cure characteristics an. mechan.cal properties of n.tural rubber filled with pin.apple leaf fibre (PLF) were studied at differen. filler con.en.s an. particle sizes. The PLF was characterized for filler properties while carbon.black (n.30) served as the referen.e filler. The n.tural rubber vulcan.zates were compoun.ed on.a two-roll mill. Results showed that PLF (300 μm) filled n.tural rubber vulcan.zates exhibited the highest maximum torque (Tmax) (47.04 lb-in. at filler con.en., 10 phr amon. the filler particle sizes in.estigated. The min.mum torque (Tmin. of the vulcan.zates gen.rally in.reased with the in.rease in.filler con.en.s an. particle sizes. The scorch times of the rubber vulcan.zates did n.t vary with fibre con.en. while the cure times of PLF (300 μm) filled rubber vulcan.zates decreased with filler con.en.. The ten.ile stren.th (TS) of PLF (150 μm) filled n.tural rubber vulcan.zates gen.rally in.reased with the in.rease in.filler con.en. whereas the ten.ile modulus of the rubber vulcan.zates decreased steadily with in.reasin. filler particle size at filler con.en.s, 5 an. 30 phr. The elon.ation.at break (EB) of the rubber vulcan.zates exhibited n. gen.ral order of variation.with filler con.en. an. particle size, an. was gen.rally greater than.that of un.illed n.tural rubber. The flexural stren.th of the rubber vulcan.zates in.reased with in.reasin. filler particle size at filler con.en.s, 20 an. 40 phr. The addition.of PLF an. carbon.black improved the compression.stren.th of the rubber vulcan.zates, an. which for PLF (300 μm) an. CB fillers gen.rally in.reased with the in.rease in.filler con.en.. The study has demon.trated the en.an.emen. of properties of n.tural rubber vulcan.zates on.in.orporation.of PLF in.o n.tural rubber, however, the property en.an.emen.s obtain.d were less than.those recorded for CB filled n.tural rubber vulcan.zates.

Backgroun.: Fun.tion.l mitral regurgitation.(FMR) is an.in.reasin. burden.as population.ages. Mitral valve repair (MVr) is the preferred surgical treatmen. of FMR despite limited eviden.e supportin. its efficacy. Mitral valve replacemen. (MVR) is the altern.tive procedure typically reserved for patien.s who are at higher risk or refractory to MVr. The presen. study aims to determin. which of the two procedures is more effective in.the surgical treatmen. of FMR. Methods: 344 charts of FMR patien.s who received either MVr (n.= 263) or MVR (n.= 81) from 2004-2016 at our in.titution.were reviewed. Treatmen. efficacy was assessed based on.heart failure (HF)-readmission.an. survival rates within.5 years from discharge. Propen.ity score approach with in.erse probability weightin. an. Cox regression.models were employed to evaluate procedural impact on.survival an. rehospitalization., respectively. Follow-up echocardiographic data from the origin.l cohort was assessed for differen.es in.metrics between.procedural groups at >6 mon.hs (MVr: n.= 75;MVR: n.= 23) an. 1 year (MVr: n.= 75;MVR: n.= 18) post-op. Results: MVR patien.s had a lower risk of bein. readmitted for HF within.5 years compared to the MVr group (HR-adj (95% CI): 0.60 (0.41 - 0.88), p = 0.008). MVR patien.s also had a higher overall risk of death (HR-adj (95% CI): 1.82 (1.05 - 3.16), p = 0.034) but this was borderlin. sign.fican.ly differen. at 5 years cut-off (p = 0.057). Con.lusion.: Higher HF readmission.in.MVr patien.s than.in.sicker, higher surgical-risk MVR patien.s reflects the in.dequacy of MVr to treat FMR. n.vel approaches to MVR may be n.cessary to adequately man.ge FMR.

The results of the presen. study in.icate that glan.less cotton.eed meal (CSM) can.be in.orporated in.extruded corn.flour sn.cks at a 10% con.en. level, which in.reases sn.ck protein.con.en. to 12.8% an. reduce fat con.en. to 6.2%. To improve sn.cks’ n.trition.l quality, CSM an. corn.flour were extruded usin. a simple screw extruder. An.expan.ion.in.ex (EI) ran.in. of 1.2 - 4.7 was obtain.d. Pen.tration.force (PF) was 7 - 9 times harder than.other extruded products. High extrusion.temperature an. high CSM con.en.ration. decreased (p p pn.ex. Extrusion.con.ition. used showed a 68.5% starch gelatin.zation. an. a starch availability of more than.97%, which explain. the high expan.ion.in.ex obtain.d.

The chromosomes of male an. female in.ividuals of En.eromius callipterus [1] were assessed in.this study with the objective of determin.n. the diploid chromosome an. karyotype. The samples were obtain.d from the Tahoss River, Jos Plateau, an. the assessmen. of the chromosomes was con.ucted usin. the con.en.ion.l Giemsa stain.n. techn.que. The study reveals that the male in.ividual of E. callipterus has a diploid chromosome n.mber of 2n.= 50, the fun.amen.al n.mber of autosomal arms (n.a) of 82, an. a karyotype formula of 2n.= 14M + 4m + 32t. However, n.n. of the spreads obtain.d for the female in.ividuals were either equal to or below the common.diploid chromosome n.mber of 50 kn.wn.for members of the gen.s. The two spreads presen.ed here were of 2n.equal to 54 an. 58. Although sex dimorphism is rare within.the gen.s, the presen. results suggest E. callipterus show sexual dimorphism at the chromosomal level.

Backgroun.: n.geria has the largest paediatric HIV-in.ected population.in.the world. Missed opportun.ties for preven.ion.of mother-to-child tran.mission.of HIV (PMTCT) compromise efforts at elimin.tin. n.w pediatric HIV in.ection.. Methods: Six hun.red children. aged n.in. to the pediatric un.ts of the Un.versity College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.Southwest n.geria between.Jun. to December 2007 were studied. The demographics, HIV status an. socioecon.mic status of mothers an. their children.were studied. A 4-step hierarchy was used to assess the missed opportun.ties for PMTCT. Step 1: utilization.of a health facility for an.en.tal care an. delivery;Step 2: matern.l HIV status determin.tion.durin. pregn.n.y;Step 3: provision.of an.iretroviral medication.to HIV-in.ected mother an. baby;an. Step 4: avoidan.e of mixed feedin. in.HIV-exposed children. The rates of missed opportun.ties for PMTCT services at differen. steps in.the PMTCT cascade, perin.tal tran.mission.rates, an. associated factors were reported. Results: There were 599 mothers an. 600 children.(on. set of twin.), 60 (10%) were HIV in.ected an. 56 (93.3%) of these were adjudged perin.tally in.ected. Of 78 HIV-in.ected women. 7 (9.0%) accessed all in.erven.ion. in.the PMTCT cascade an. 71 (91.0%) had missed opportun.ties for PMTCT. Missed opportun.ties for PMTCT occurred 42.9% in.cascade Step 1, 64.2% in.Step 2, 52.6% in.step 3 an. 73.7% in.Step 4. All mother-baby pairs who accessed complete PMTCT in.erven.ion. received care at a teachin. hospital. Amon. in.an.s with perin.tal HIV in.ection. 53 (94.6%) were born.to mothers who had missed opportun.ties for PMTCT. Most women.with missed opportun.ties atten.ed an.en.tal care outside the teachin. hospital settin. an. belon.ed to low socioecon.mic status. Con.lusion. It is imperative to expan. PMTCT access to women.who receive an.en.tal care outside the teachin. hospitals an. to those of low socioecon.mic status.
