Altitudinal seasonality as a potential driver of morphological diversification in rear-edge bird populations

Populations at the low latitude limits of a species range(rear-edge populations)are often considered more vulnerable to climate ***,their ability to track different environmental settings at a regional scale has been widely overlooked,although this may be relevant to accurately assess their adaptive capacity to cope with ongoing *** we tested whether the endemic African Chaffinch(Fringilla coelebs africana)tracks environmental changes(*** temperatures,snow cover)by rearranging their numbers between seasons(spring ***)along the altitude gradients of its northwestern African *** additionally tested whether these seasonal changes in abundance were paralleled by morphological variation,suggesting a process of population *** assessed African Chaffinch abundance in tree covered farmland and woodland sites distributed along an altitude gradient in spring and *** addition,we captured and measured chaffinches within the study gradient to explore the patterns of morphological *** results showed that chaffinches shifted to lowlands from snow covered highlands during *** addition,highland individuals showed longer and more concave wings than their lowland *** morphological traits are usually related to flight efficiency in migratory birds,which suggest the presence of altitudinal movements aimed to track the environmental seasonality caused by *** results suggest a potential role of altitudinal seasonality as a driver of regional diversification within the African Chaffinch populations,which could be occurring in other North African avian species given their relatively high endemicity in the *** evolutionary and conservation implications of these displacements have been often overlooked despite they can shape the adaptive capacity of rear-edge bird populations to face the ongoing environmental changes in this peripheral area of the Palearctic.

The movement dynamics of autotomized lizards and their tails reveal functional costs of caudal autotomy

Autotomy has evolved independently several times in different animal *** frequently involves immediate functional costs,so regeneration evolved in many instances to restore the functionality of that body *** autotomy is a widespread antipredator strategy in lizards,although it may affect energy storage,locomotion dynamics,or survival in future encounters with ***,we assessed the effect of tail loss on the locomotor performance of wall lizards(Podarcis muralis),as well as the recovery of locomotor functionality of lizards with regenerated tails,and the movement dynamics of shed tails that were either intact or having regenerated *** loss had no effect on locomotion over unhindered spaces,possibly due to compensation between a negative effect on the stride of front limbs,and a positive effect of losing mass and friction *** found a clear negative impact of tail loss on locomotion in spaces with interspersed obstacles,in which tailed lizards jumped larger distances when leaving the ***,lizards that used the tail to push off the ground were able to approach the obstacles from further,so that the tail seemed to be useful when used during *** fully restores lizard’s locomotor capacities,but tail antipredator value,as indicated by the intensity of post-autotomic movements,is only partially *** these results,we propose that,together with the recovery of post-autotomy antipredator capacities,the restoration of the organismal locomotor performance may have been an important,yet frequently neglected factor in the evolution of lizard’s regeneration ability.

The role of clinical diagnosis criteria on the frequency of accommodative insufficiency

AIM: To estimate and compare the frequency of accommodative insufficiency(AI) within the same clinical population sample depending on the type of clinical criteria used for diagnosis. Comparing the frequency within the same population would help to minimize bias due to sampling or methodological variability. METHODS: Retrospective study of 205 medical records of symptomatic subjects free of any organic cause and symptoms persisting despite optical compensation evaluated. Based on the most commonly clinical diagnostics criteria found in the literature, four diagnostics criteria were established for AI(Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ) based on subjective accommodative tests: monocular accommodative amplitude two or more diopters below Hofstetter's minimum value [15-(0.25×age)](Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ); failing monocular accommodative facility with minus lens, establishing the cut-off in 0 cycles per minute(cpm)(Ⅰ) and in 6 cpm(Ⅱ, Ⅲ); failing binocular accommodative facility with minus lens, establishing the cut-off in 0 cpm(Ⅰ) and in 3 cpm(Ⅱ).RESULTS: The proportion of AI(95%CⅠ) for criteria Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ were 1.95%(0.04%-3.86%), 2.93%(0.31%-4.57%), 6.34%(1.90%-7.85%) and 41.95%(35.14%-48.76%) respectively, with a statistically significant difference shown between these values(χ2=226.7, P<0.001). A pairwise multiple comparison revealed that the proportion of AI detected for criterion Ⅳ was significantly greater than the proportion for the rest of the criteria(P-adjusted<0.05 in all cases).CONCLUSION: The prevalence of cases of AI within the same clinical population varies with the clinical diagnostic criteria selected. The variation is statistically significant when considering the monocular accommodative amplitude as the only clinical diagnostic sign.

Preclinical evaluation of azathioprine plus buthionine sulfoximine in the treatment of human hepatocarcinoma and colon carcinoma

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and the safety of azathioprine (AZA) and buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) bylocalized application into HepG2 tumor in ***: Different hepatoma and colon carcinoma cell lines (HepG2, HuH7, Chang liver, LoVo, RKO, SW-48, SW-480) were grown in minimal essencial medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum and 1% antibiotic/antimycotic solution and maintained in a humidified 37 ℃ incubator with 5% CO2. These cells were pretreated with BSO for 24 h and then with AZA for different times. We examined the effects of this combination on some proteins and on cellular death. We also studied the eff icacy and the safety of AZA (6 mg/kg per day) and BSO (90 mg/kg per day) in HepG2 tumor growth in vivo using athymic mice. We measured safety by serological markers such as aminotransferases and creatine ***: The in vitro studies revealed a new mechanism of action for the AZA plus BSO combination in the cancer cells compared with other thiopurines (6-mercaptopurine, 6-methylmercaptopurine, 6-thioguanine and 6-methylthioguanine) in combination with BSO. The cytotoxic effect of AZA plus BSO in HepG2 cells resulted from necroptosis induction in a mitochondrial-dependent manner. From kinetic studies we suggest that glutathione (GSH) depletion stimulates c-Jun amino-terminal kinase and Bax translocation in HepG2 cells with subsequent deregulation of mitochondria (cytochrome c release, loss of membrane potential), and proteolysis activation leading to loss of membrane integrity, release of lactate dehydrogenase and DNA degradation. Some of this biochemical and cellular changes could be reversed by N-acetylcysteine (a GSH replenisher). In vivo studies showed that HepG2 tumor growth was inhibited when AZA was combined with ***: Our studies suggest that a combination of AZA plus BSO could be useful for localizedtreatment of hepatocellular carcinoma as in the currently used transarterial chemoembolization method.

The inflammato ry response plays an important role in neuroprotection and regeneration after ischemic *** use of non-ste roidal anti-inflammatory drugs has been a matter of debate as to whether they have beneficial or detrimental *** this context,the effects of the anti-inflammatory agent meloxicam have been scarcely documented after stro ke,but its ability to inhibit both cyclooxygenase isoforms(1 and 2) could be a promising strategy to modulate postischemic *** study analyzed the effect of meloxicam in a transient focal cerebral ischemia model in rats,measuring its neuroprotective effect after 48 hours and 7 days of reperfusion and the effects of the treatment on the glial scar and regenerative events such as the generation of new progenitors in the subventricular zone and axonal sprouting at the edge of the damaged *** show that meloxicam’s neuroprotective effects remained after 7 days of reperfusion even if its administration was restricted to the two first days after ***,meloxicam treatment modulated glial scar reactivity,which matched with an increase in axonal ***,this treatment decreased the formation of neuronal progenitor *** study discusses the dual role of anti-inflammatory treatments after stro ke and encourages the careful analysis of both the neuroprotective and the regenerative effects in preclinical studies.

Testing the effectiveness of conservation management within biosphere reserves:the case of the Mexican deer mouse(Peromyscus mexicanus)as a bioindicator

Biosphere reserves are protected areas whose purpose is to combine conservation and sustainable ***,their effectiveness has not been tested sufficiently,especially from an ecological and genetic ap*** this sense,the Peromyscus genus represents an excellent bioindicator to address these questions,due to its short life and high evolutionary rate and *** conservation managers,genetic structure can increase the rate of loss of genetic diversity because alleles exclusive of a subpopulation are more likely to disappear as a consequence of genetic drift in comparison with a panmictic *** we analyzed the abundance,movement distances,morphology/morphometry and genetic structure of 3 populations of Mexican deer mouse(Peromyscus mexicanus)located in different protected zones of La Tigra National Park(Honduras).Our results are consistent among the 3 approaches and showed the highest values of abundance,morphometry and genetic diversity in the population located at the core zone,whereas non-statistically significant differences were found between buffer and transition zone populations,suggesting suitable effectiveness of conservation management in the core zone but a lack of ecological buffering function of the other *** addition,the low movement distances and high genetic structure among the studied populations provide evidence of poor conservation management in the buffer and transition ***,we discuss the utility of the novel methodology used in this work,combining morphometry,abundance and genetics,in testing the effectiveness of conservation strategies in biosphere reserves,and the value of the Peromyscus genus as a bioindicator.

TPC1 - SV Channels Gain Shape

The most prominent ion channel localized in plant vacuoles is the slow activating SV type. Slow vacuolar （SV） channels were discovered by patch clamp studies as early as 1986. In the following two decades, numerous studies revealed that these calcium- and voltage-activated, nonselective cation channels are expressed in the vacuoles of all plants and every plant tissue. The voltage-dependent properties of the SV channel are susceptible to modulation by calcium, pH, redox state, as well as regulatory proteins. In Arabidopsis, the SV channel is encoded by the AtTPC1 gene, and even though its gene product represents the by far largest conductance of the vacuolar membrane, tpcl-loss-of-function mutants appeared not to be impaired in major physiological functions such as growth, development, and reproduction. In contrast, the fou2 gain-of-function point mutation D454N within TPC1 leads to a pronounced growth phenotype and increased synthesis of the stress hormone jasmonate. Since the TPC1 gene is present in all land plants, it likely encodes a very general function. In this review, we will discuss major SV channel properties and their impact on plant cell physiology.
