Optimization and Thermodynamic Studies of Lead (II) and Cadmium (II) Ions Removal from Water Using Musa acuminate Pseudo-Stem Biochar

We recently found out that water from the Ugandan stretch of the Kagera transboundary river (East Africa) is contaminated with lead (Pb2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) ions at levels that are above permissible limits in drinking water. Because lignocellulosic biomass-based adsorbents have been explored for the remediation of metal ions from water, this study investigated the potential of Musa acuminata pseudo-stem (MAPS) biochar for the remediation of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions from water. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to optimize the adsorption conditions while the isotherms were analyzed using Freundlich and Langmuir models. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity at equilibrium was 769.23 mg/g and 588.23 mg/g for Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions, respectively. Langmuir isotherm model provided the best fit for the data, and it was favorable since all r2 values (Cd2+ = 0.9726 and Pb2+ = 0.9592) were close to unity. Gibb’s free energy change was found to be negative for both metals, implying the feasibility of the adsorption process. Correspondingly, the enthalpy change was positive for both metal ions which revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and it occurred randomly at the solid-liquid interface. These results suggested that biochar from MAPs could be utilized for the removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from polluted water in the Kagera transboundary river to make it suitable for domestic use. Further studies should consider chemical modification of the biochar as well as characterization to examine the chemical nature of the biochar.

Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals perturbs lipid metabolism and circadian rhythms

A growing body of evidence indicates that exposure to environmental chemicals can contribute to the etiology of obesity by inappropriately stimulating adipogenesis as well as perturbing lipid metabolism and energy balance. One potential mechanism by which chemical exposure can influence lipid metabolism is through disturbance of circadian rhythms, endogenously-driven cycles of roughly 24 hr in length that coordinate biochemical, physiological, and behavioral processes in all organisms. Here we show for the first time that exposure to endocrine disrupting compounds（EDCs）, including the pesticide tributyltin, two commercial flame retardants, and a UV-filter chemical found in sunscreens,can perturb both circadian clocks and lipid metabolism in vertebrates. Exposure of developing zebrafish to EDCs affects core clock activity and leads to a remarkable increase in lipid accumulation that is reminiscent of the effects observed for longdaysin, a known disruptor of circadian rhythms. Our data reveal a novel obesogenic mechanism of action for environmental chemicals, an observation which warrants further research. Because circadian clocks regulate a wide variety of physiological processes, identification of environmental chemicals capable of perturbing these systems may provide important insights into the development of environmentally-induced metabolic disease.

Phosphoinositide and Inositolpolyphosphate Signalling in Defense Responses of Arabidopsis thaliana Challenged by Mechanical Wounding

Various biochemical signals are implicated in Arabidopsis wound signalling, including jasmonic acid （JA）, salicylic acid, auxin, and Ca^2＋. Here, we report on cross-talk of phytohormones with phosphoinositide signals not previously implicated in plant wound responses. Within 30 min of mechanical wounding of Arabidopsis rosette-leaves, the levels of the lipid-derived soluble inositolpolyphosphate, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate （InsP3）, increased four to five-fold. Concom- itantly, the precursor lipids, phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate and phosphatidylinositol transiently depleted, followed by re-synthesis after 30-60 min of stimulation. Increased InsP3 levels with wounding coincided with JA increases over the first hours of stimulation. In dde2-2-mutant plants deficient in JA biosynthesis, no InsP3 increase was observed upon wounding, indicating that JA was required for InsP3 formation, and InsP3 levels increased in wild-type plants challenged with sorbitol, increasing endogenous JA levels. In InsP 5-ptase plants with attenuated phosphoinositide signalling, the induction of wounding-inducible genes was diminished compared with wildtype plants, suggesting a role for phosphoinositide signalling in mediating plant wound responses. The gene-expression patterns suggest that phosphoinositides contribute to both JA-dependent and JA-independent aspects of wound signalling. Weight gain of Plutella xylostella caterpillars feeding on InsP 5-ptase plants was increased compared with that of caterpillars feeding on wild-type plants. The ecophysiological relevance of phosphoinositide signals in plant defense responses to herbivory is discussed in light of recent findings of inositolpolyphosphate involvement in phytohormone-receptor function.

Fuel cell performance assessment for closed-loop renewable energy systems

Fuel cells and electrolysis are promising candidates for future energy production from renewable energy sources. Usually, polymer electrolyte fuel cell systems run on hydrogen and air, while the most of electrolysis systems vent out oxygen as unused by-product. Replacing air with pure oxygen, fuel cell electrochemical performance, durability and system efficiency can be significantly increased with a further overall system simplification and increased reliability. This work, which represents the initial step for pure H;/O;polymer electrolyte fuel cell operation in closed-loop systems, focuses on performance validation of a single cell operating with pure H;/O;under different relative humidity（RH） levels, reactants stoichiometry conditions and temperature. As a result of this study, the most convenient and appropriate operative conditions for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell stack integrated in a closed loop system were selected.

Preparation of cross-linked magnetic chitosan with quaternary ammonium and its application for Cr(Ⅵ) and P(Ⅴ) removal

Pollutants that exist in anionic species are issues of concern in water treatment. Compared to cationic pollutants, the removal of anionic pollutants by adsorption is more difficult because most adsorbents carry predominantly negative charges in neutral and alkaline environments. In this study, a cross-linked chitosan derivative with quaternary ammonium and magnetic properties（QM-chitosan） was prepared and employed to remove chromium（VI） and phosphorus（V）（Cr（VI） and P（V）） from aqueous environments. The QM-chitosan was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry（FT-IR）,thermogravimetric analysis（TGA）, energy dispersive X-ray（SEM-EDX） and zeta *** experiments show that QM-chitosan can effectively remove Cr（VI） and P（V）, and the main mechanism was believed to be electrostatic interaction. A pseudosecond-order model was fitted to describe the kinetic processes of Cr（VI） and P（V） removal. The adsorption isotherms of both Cr（VI） and P（V） on the QM-chitosan were well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm equation. The saturated adsorption capacity of P（V）（2.783 mmol/g） was found to be higher than that of Cr（VI）（2.323 mmol/g）, resulting from the size of the H2PO-4ions being smaller than that of the HCr O-4ions. However, the theoretical calculation and experimental results showed that QM-chitosan had a stronger affinity for Cr（VI） than P（V）. The adsorption–desorption of the QM-chitosan was evaluated, and high regeneration rates were demonstrated.

Genetics of barley tiller and leaf development

In cereals, tillering and leaf development are key factors in the concept of crop ideotype, introduced in the 1960 s to enhance crop yield, via manipulation of plant architecture. In the present review, we discuss advances in genetic analysis of barley shoot architecture,focusing on tillering, leaf size and angle. We also discuss novel phenotyping techniques, such as 2 D and 3 D imaging, that have been introduced in the era of phenomics, facilitating reliable trait measurement. We discuss the identification of genes and pathways that are involved in barley tillering and leaf development,highlighting key hormones involved in the control of plant architecture in barley and rice. Knowledge on genetic control of traits related to plant architecture provides useful resources for designing ideotypes for enhanced barley yield and performance.
