Paleostress magnitude in a fold-thrust belt （External Hellenides, Greece）： evidence from twinning in calcareous rocks

Based on twinned calcite in carbonate samples collected from the External Hellenides, we calculated paleostress magnitude and its across-strike variation into the Pindos Zone （PZ） and the Gavrovo Zone （GZ）. These two zones are located west of the suture zone between the External and the Internal Hellenides. Paleostress magnitude is in the order of 110 MPa close to the suture, dropping toward the foreland and reaching a value of 50 MPa 80 km from the suture. The obtained distribution of paleostress levels in the External Hellenides resembles that recorded in other orogens, such as the Appalachian and Northern Pyrenean. The paleodepths of sampled carbonates during the initial stage of thrusting, which were estimated using the differential stress values, are structurally sensible. Comparing our results to available information on the evolution of paleostress magnitude with depth in compressional settings at the upper crust, we suggest that the mechanical behaviour of the cover thrust sheets of the External Hellenides is governed by the law of friction under nearly hydrostatic conditions. Based on this finding, as well as on published rheological data from rocks exposed at the deeper structural levels of the External Hellenides, a rheological profile was proposed. On this profile, brittle-ductile transition occurs at a depth of around 9-10 kin, slightly deeper than the basal decollement of the External Hellenides.

AIM To investigate if pre-treatment platelet counts could provide prognostic information in patients with rectal adenocarcinoma that received neo-adjuvant treatment. METHODS Platelet number on diagnosis of stage II and III rectal cancer was evaluated in 51 patients receiving neoadjuvant treatment and for whom there were complete follow-up data on progression and survival, as well as pathologic outcome at the time of surgery. Pathologic responses on the surgical specimen of patients with lower platelet counts(150-300 × 10~9/L) were compared with these of patients with higher platelet counts(> 300 × 10~9/L) by the χ~2 test. Overall and progression free survival Kaplan-Meier curves of the two groups were constructed and compared with the Log-Rank *** A significant difference was present between the two groups in regards to pathologic response with patients with lower platelet counts being more likely to exhibit a good or complete response to neo-adjuvant treatment than patients with higher platelet counts(P = 0.015). Among other factors evaluated, there was also a significant difference between the carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) at presentation of patients that exhibited a good or complete response and those that had no response or a minimal to moderate response. Patients with a good or complete response were more likely to present with a CEA of less than 5 μg/L(P = 0.00066). There was no significant difference in overall and progression free survival between the two platelet count groups(Log-Rank tests P = 0.42 and P = 0.35, respectively).CONCLUSION In this retrospective analysis of stage II and III rectal cancer patients, platelet counts at the time of diagnosis had prognostic value for neo-adjuvant treatment pathologic response. Pre-treatment CEA also held prognostic value in regards to treatment effect.

In this paper, a modified Newton type iterative method is considered for ap- proximately solving ill-posed nonlinear operator equations involving m-accretive mappings in Banach space. Convergence rate of the method is obtained based on an a priori choice of the regularization parameter. Our analysis is not based on the sequential continuity of the normalized duality mapping.

The broad implication of the paper is to elucidate the significance of the dynamic heaving motion in the aerodynamic performance of multi-element wings,currently considered as a promising aspect for the improvement of the aerodynamic correlation between CFD,wind tunnel and track testing in race car *** relationship between the varying aerodynamic forces,the vortex shedding,and the unsteady pressure field of a heaving double-element wing is investigated for a range of mean ride heights,frequencies,and amplitudes,using a two-dimensional(2D)unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS)approach and an overset mesh method for modelling the moving *** analysis of the results shows that at high frequencies,i.e.,k≥5.94 and amplitudes a/c≥0.05 the interaction of the shear vorticity between the two elements results in the generation of cohering leading and trailing edge vortices on the flap,associated to the rapid variation of thrust and downforce *** the occurrence and intensity of these vortices are dependent upon the frequency,amplitude,and mean ride height of the heaving *** addition of the flap significantly alters the frequency of the shed vortices in the wake and maintains the generation of downforce for longer time in ground *** comparison with the static wing provides evidence that the dynamic motion of a race car wing can be beneficial in terms of performance,or detrimental in terms of aerodynamic correlation.

Plant-to-plant variability is a crop stability *** objective of this study in maize(Zea mays L.)was to test the validity of the theoretical background of the hypothesis that the coefficient of variation(CV)for grain yield per plant and mean yield are connected exponentially,following the Taylor’s Power Law(TPL)*** experimentation was conducted across two sites,two seasons,and two planting *** were the main plots,corresponding to the typical practice of 8.89 plants m–2(TCD)and the low-input optimal of 5.33 plants m–2(LCD),while hybrids were the *** from 26 subplots in the first site averaged CV values of 22.6%at the TCD and 21.9%at the LCD,and mean yields of 19.1 and 13.9 t ha–1,respectively,following the TPL *** same was true for the second site,with average CVs and means of 41.5%and 14.3 t ha–1 at the TCD and 36.8%and 11.5 t ha–1 at the LCD.A test was performed on the simple correlation between the logarithms of variances and their respective means to investigate whether there is a systematic variance dependence on mean,thus questioning the reliability of *** validity of TPL was verified in the first ***,there was a systematic dependence of yield variance on mean yield in the second site,implying that the CV-yield correlation might be not biologically *** of the variance to remove its dependence on the mean did not validate the CV-yield negative relationship,meaning that caution is needed when interpreting the CV as a stability index for intra-crop *** the determinant factor of invalidity of TPL was the extensive intra-crop variation in the lower yielding second site can be assessed in future research.

A methodology for the selection of the optimal land uses of the reclamation of mined areas is proposed. It takes into consideration several multi-nature criteria and constraints, including spatial constrains related to the permissible land uses in certain parts of the mined area. The methodology combines desirability functions and evolution searching algorithms for selection of the optimal reclamation scheme. Its application for the reclamation planning of the Amynteon lignite surface mine in Greece indicated that it handles effectively spatial and non-spatial constraints and incorporates easily the decision-makers preferences regarding the reclamation strategy in the optimization procedure.
