There are about 9,000 species of birds living in the world. They have a more or less intimate association with human life. Birds are the only vertebrates that have dwelled throughout in the air, water and land. Unfortunately, little do we understand of their origins and evolutionary history. This is largely due to the poor preservation of the fossil ancestry. Like their modem descendants, the early ancestors had both an extensive range of life spans and very thin skeletons.

In the structure of the sidewall of braincase of mammals, the advanced therians (Metatheria and Eutheria) are characterized by their peculiar property of the squamosal, which is located in the front of the petrosal and takes part in the construction of the side wall of the braincase, but all the rest of the mammals have a squamosal, which is located in the back of the petrosal without taking part in the construction of the sidewall of the braincase.

Fragments of the postcranial skeleton of s taeniolabidoid multituberculate,? Lambdopsalis bulla, from the Eocene of Chins are described. These consist of cervical vertebrae C2-C3.(fused), a fragment of the neural arch of C4, and complete C5-C7, thoracic vertebrae T1-T3. and two humeri, which are the first Complete multituberculate humeri ever described. The fusion of C2 and C3. and the stout structure of the humerus with a very large deltopectoral crest, a wide distal end, and prominent radial and ulnar condyles, indicate a fossorial mode of life for? L. bulla. These postcranial elements and a wide flattened, skull with a vertical occipital plate, suggest adaptstions seen in some modern golden moles and cricetid rodents such as Myospalax that dig with claws and displace the soil with the head.

A comprehensive database of paleoenvironmental settings for paleoanthropological sites provides a useful tool to explore the link between human evolution and paleoenvironmental changes.A preliminary GIS-based environmental database for paleoanthropological sites in china(EDPC) was constructed based on data collected from published *** database currently contains 1114 paleoanthropological *** will be available for online access following the establishment of relevant rules,and after improvement and further development through regular and sustained updates by internal and external *** analyses using the GIS system yielded new evidence regarding human-environmental relationships.

＜正＞ Although Mesozoic birds were first discovered in china in 1982, their enormous significance did not become fully apparent until the early 1990s. Without exception, all come from lacustrine sediments in the Early Cretaceous, primarily from the Yixian Formation and the overlying Jiufotang Formation. The 40Ar/3.Ar dating of the Yixian Formation suggests an age of 120-125 million years before present;the Jiufotang Formation is slightly younger.

Rather abundant sample of Alloptox, including skulls, maxillae, mandibles and isolated teeth, was collected from the middle Miocene of Tongxin County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region during the two field seasons in 1985 and 1986, when reconnaissance and geological mapping of the middle Miocene in this region were conducted by a joint party of the institute of vertebrate paleontology and paleoanthropology, Academia Sinica (IVPP) and the Bureau of Geology, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The specimens came from 18 localities pertaining to 9 levels in a sequence of middle Miocene fluviatile sediments with a thickness of ca. 200m. Except for the specimens assigned to Alloptox sp. from locality Taoziliang, all are recognized as Alloptox gobiensis. The present paper deals with only their dental morphology which is probably phylogenetically significant. Altogether 3.7 specimens of Alloptox gobiensis and 27 specimens of Alloptox sp. have been described. The text figures are drawn by the authors and Mrs. Yang Mingwan. All teeth are presented as left ones, the abbreviatd word "inv" is used under the figures of right teeth. All specimens are stored in IVPP under the inventory number V8822-V883.. Three species have been referred to Shantungosuchus to date. The type species S. chuhsienensis (Young, 1961) is represented by an articulated skeleton preserved as an impression of its ventral surface.S. hangjinensis was recently described by Wu et al. (1994) on the basis of an incomplete skull (with the mandible) and the part of the postcranial skeleton. The third species is S. brachycephalus, which will be restudied in the present paper's brachycephalus was erected by Young for a specimen, consisting of partial skull and some postcranial elements (V4020). It was published in one of Young's posthumous papers in 1982. Because the specimen was not fully prepaired when it was studied, Young's original description is very simple and there ekist errors in his identification of bone structures. For example, the four associated cervical vertebrae were described as osteoderms; the teeth are point rather than blunt in tip; and the left ramus of the mandible was identified as the humerus. Further repairation of the specimen shows many unknown features, especially characters from the palate, mandible and vertebrae. Those are sighflcant in our understanding of the morphology of S. brachycephalus and also important in establishing interspecific relationships within the genus.

Zebrafish is a good vertebrate model for development studies. Research on gene expression and regulation during zebrafish embryonic development plays an important role in revealing the molecular mechanism of morphogenesis in vertebrate. Tubulin locates the cytoplasmic determinants in eggs, organizes the formation of basic cytoskeleton and controls various cell movements. There are several types of tubulin, each of which has specific expression regions and functions. In this study, the full_length cDNA of a Xenopus β 2 tubulin was used as template to generate Dig_labeled antisense RNA which was used as a probe to carry out in situ hybridization on whole mount zebrafish embryos. Under the experimental conditions, the tubulin transcript was first detected in a group of cells in embryos at the midblastula stage. With the development of the embryo, this transcript was gradually restricted to the nervous system. These results demonstrate that the expression of this β 2 tubulin gene in zebrafish embryos is neural specific.
