Petrogenesis and significance of early Yanshanian syenite-granite complex in eastern Nanling Range

In the eastern Nanling Range there exists the early Yanshanian syenite-granite assemblage. A representative example is the Pitou-Tabei complex composed of the Tabei syenite pluton and the Pitou syenogranite pluton in southern Jiangxi province. U-Pb zircon dating yields ages of 188.6±2.2 Ma for the Tabei pluton and 186.3±1.1 Ma for the Pitou pluton. The Tabei syenite is characterized by relatively low SiO2 content (62.40% - 68.75%), high alkalis (K2O+Na2O = 10.56%-11.96%), low percent K2O/Na2O ratios (0.56-0.93), metaluminous fea- ture (A/CNK = 0.80-1.00), enrichment in LILE (Rb, Ba, K) and HFSE (Th, U, Nb, Ta, Zr, and so on), weakly negative to positive Eu anomalies (δ Eu = 0.63-1.82), relatively low (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.70412-0.70543), and relatively high ε Nd(t) (3.14-3.52). The Pitou syenogranite is charac- terized by high silicon content (SiO2 = 71.06%-76.28%), relatively low alkalis (K2O+Na2O = 8.10%-9.80%), high percent K2O/Na2O ratios (1.22-1.94), metaluminous feature (A/CNK = 0.94-1.07), enrichment in Rb, Th (U), K, depletion in Ba, Nb, Ta, Sr, P , Zr, Ti, high ΣREE (av- eraging 451.03 μg/g), strong negative Eu anomalies (δ Eu = 0.27-0.33), relatively high (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.70805-0.70912), and relatively low ε Nd( t ) (?5.35-?6.29). The Tabei syenite and Pitou syenogranite both have the characteristics of A-type granites. The former is considered to be from the asthenosphere mantle, and the latter was the product of the crust-mantle mixture. They both were probably formed in a rifting setting.

The low diversity agglutinated foraminifers are recovered from the Qihulin Formation of the Longzhaogou Group in eastern Heilongjiang, china. The foraminiferal fauna consists of 9 species of 5 genera. The common members are Cribrostomoides nonioninoides (Reuss), Haplophragmoides concavus (Chapman), H. gigas minor Nauss. Although the diagnostic zonal taxa are absent in the agglutinated fauna, according to the global stratigraphic distribution of the above-mentioned species, and the associated Pseudohaploceras ammonite fauna, the foraminiferal fauna may be of a Barremian-Aptian (Early Cretaceous) age.

She is now Associated Research Professor in the Institute of Mineral Deposits CAGs and has long been engaged in researches on mineralogy and petrology.

In No. 50 kimberlite pipe of Fuxian County, Liaoning province, an eclogite inclusion(nodule), which is extremely rare in kimberlites, was discovered and phlogopite exsolutionlamellae were found in garnets of the inclusion. Microscopic, TEM and energy spectral observa-tions and studies confirmed that these lamellae are phlogopite. They are colourless and acicularin section, generally 0.5-5μm in width and 10-100μm in length. Nevertheless, fine lamellae,0.05-0.1μm wide and 1-2μm long, are also well developed. Along [111] of the garnet, three setsof phlogopite lamellae show oriented arrangement approximately at angles of 60°-70°, indi-cating that these lamellae might be the product of exsolution from garnet as a result ofpressure-release when eclogite ascended from the relatively deep level to the relatively shallowlevel of the mantle. Tiny acicular exsolution minerals (or inclusions) are commonly found ingarnet and pyroxene in eclogite inclusions of kimberlites all over the world and it has been re-ported that the identified exsolution minerals include pyroxene and rutile. This is the first timethat phlogopite exsolution lamillae were found in eclogite inclusions in the world.

The front of the Zoulang Nanshan Caledonian volcanic island arc zone in the northern Qilian Mountains is a forearc accretionary terrane, composed of multiple accretionary volcanic island arcs, flysch accretionary wedges,high-pressure metamorphosed detachment zones and remnants of ophiolites. It resulted from the northeastward subduction of the Early Palaeozoic Qilan oceanic crust beneath the Alxa block. High-pressure metamorphism, which occurred during the subduction, progressed through three stages: the initial stage of medium T-high P,the main stage of temperature decrease and pressure increase, and the lag stage of pressure decrease and temperature increase. Finally the paper presents a retrotrench subduction dynamic model indicative of northward subduction of the central Qilian block and southward accretion of the Alxa block during the period of 450-500 Ma.

An almost complete juvenile dinosaur skull with lower jaw was discovered fromthe Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation in Beipiao, Liaoning province, china. Here, the specimen isdescribed and a cladistic analysis is performed in order to find its phylogenetic relationships. Theresult shows that this specimen represents a new genus of Psittacosauridae, Hongshanosaurus houi,gen. et sp. nov., and confirms the monophyletic status for Ceratopsia and Marginocephalia. However,Heterodontosaurus is found to be the sister taxon to Marginocephalia, rather than a basalOrnithopoda.

Unconformity-like Reflection Pattern under the Moho in the Sulu Area

When seismic exploration is carried out for finding oil/gas traps in a sedimentary basin, angular unconformity-like reflectors often appear in a seismic profile, indicating some promising structures such as pinchout. People usually think that the angular unconformity-like reflection pattern could occur only in a sedimentary basin within the upper crust because the pattern corresponds to a combination of a flat layer and some dipping layers, and they belong to different sedimentary sequences. In order to find optimal site for continental scientific drilling in the Dabie-Sulu ultra-high pressure metamorphic belt containing minerals such as coesite and micro-diamond, I have been in charge of geophysical investigations in these Proterozoic metamorphic ter- ranes of crystalline rocks. The investigation includes deep seismic reflection, magnetotelluric survey, gravity and magnetic studies, together with large-scale geological mapping on the surface. In the Shimen site located in southeast Shandong province, East china, I have found a very clear angular reflection pattern, similar to those obtained by petroleum seismic exploration in sedimentary basins, appearing from 10.3 s to 13 s, right under the Moho discontinuity. This unusual and strange event from the uppermost mantle seems significant and might provide some clues for understanding the interaction between the crust and the mantle. Therefore I present the result here for further studies and worldwide comparison. I shall start with the basic geological settings of this area, then deal with the data acquisition and processing parameters as well as the deep seismic reflection sections to identify the deep angular unconformity-like pattern (see Fig. 4), finally, a brief discussion on interpretation of this type of reflection events.

Restudy on morphology of Oryctocephalus indicus (Reed, 1910), based on specimens from Guizhou, china and Nevada USA, suggests that the subspecies regarded previously as Oryctocephalus indicus indicus (Reed, 1910), O. indicus latus Zhao et Yuan 2002, and O. indicus kobayashi Saito, 1934, are synonymous, and Oryctocephalus americanus Sundberg et McCollum, 2003 is a similar form of O. indicus. Oryctocephalus indicus is rediagnosed as having a glabella that is subconical in outline and tapering forward slightly; a thorax that comprises 12 segments, and a small pygidium that bears 2—3 axial rings with a terminal piece and a postaxial ridge. Oryctocephalus indicus is widely distributed in eastern Guizhou and ranges through a great interval of Kaili Formation. Its first appearance is almost identical with these events of trilobite extinction-recovery occurring at the end of the Early Cambrian, the alternation of acritach assemblages, the change of trace elements (REE) and stable isotopes (carbon) at the Wuliu-Zengjiaya section. As one of the key forms for defining the traditional Lower-Middle Cambrian boundary (the base of Cambrian Series 3 and Stage 5 in the new Cambrian chronstratigraphic standard), O. indicus has received detailed study and has more advantages than other species such as Ovatoryctocara granulata Tchernysheva, 1962 or Arthricocephalus chauveaui Bergeron, 1899.

A new genus, Eocene Philolimnias （Ephemeroptera, Insecta）, has been collected in amber on the main coal beds of the Guchengzi formation （E21 g） from Fushun Coalfield, Liaoning province. This is a complete specimen with the body and wings well preserved. The characteristics of this new genus are fairly close to the living form of Ephemerella, but the anterior cubitus （CuA1） has five branches, with narrow costal area, intercalary vein well developed between the regions of MP1 and MP2, and slender antennae. The structure of the genitalia is different from that of the modern *** present paper describes new results of the stratigraphic subdivisions of Fushun Coalfield.
