This study demonstrates the importance of conversion of tea farms in marginal land to fuelwood plantation by analyzing the current biophysical, economic and institutional pros and cons of each land uses for marginal small tea plantation holders (MSTH). The study is based on household survey and field investigation conducted in Matara and Badulla Districts of Sri Lanka. Both qualitative and quantitative data on important biophysical, economic and institutional factors was collected from a total of 81 MSTH, 50 from Matara and 31 from Badulla, and fuelwood consuming industries within 20 km of the study area. The result showed that MSTH are facing biophysical and economic problems that are forcing them to leave portion of their tea planation land uncultivated. With ongoing demand increase for fuelwood, presence of tree species already adaptable to the area and favorable property right condition, conversion of the existing marginal land to fuelwood plantation is a viable way to sustainably manage the MSTH farmland. This will also contribute to tackle environmental disasters the area is frequently facing due to abandoning of the marginal tea plantation land.

Exploring the Relationship between Spatiotemporal Variations in Air Quality and Meteorological Parameters before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Xi’an

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the air pollution of the world. The present study investigated the temporal and spatial variability in air quality in Xi’an, China, and its relationship with meteorological parameters during and before the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of this study indicated that air pollutants, PM2.5, NO2, PM10, CO, and SO2 are likely to decrease during winter (25%, 50%, 30%, 40%, and 35%) to spring (30%, 55%, 38%, 50%, and 40%) and summer (40%, 58%, 60%, 55%, and 47%), respectively. However, the concentration of O3-8h increased by 40%, 55%, and 65% during winter, spring, and summer, respectively. The values of the air quality index decreased during the COVID-19 period. Furthermore, significant positive trends were reported in PM2.5, NO2, PM10, O3, and SO2, and no notable trends in CO during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both during and before the COVID-19 period, PM10, NO2, PM2.5, CO, and SO2 showed a negative correlation with the temperature and a moderately positive significant correlation between O3-8h and temperature. The findings of this study would help understand the air pollution circumstances in Xi’an before and during the COVID-19 period and offer helpful information regarding the implications of different air pollution control strategies.

The challenging conditions prevalent in indoor environments have rendered many traditional positioning methods inept to yield satisfactory results. Our work tackles the challenging problem of accurate indoor positioning in hazardous multipath environments through three versatile super resolution techniques: time domain Multiple Signal Classification (TD-MUSIC), frequency domain MUSIC (FD-MUSIC) algorithms, and frequency domain Eigen value (FD-EV) method. The advantage of using these super resolution techniques is twofold. First for Line-of-Sight (LoS) conditions this provides the most accurate means of determining the time delay estimate from transmitter to receiver for any wireless sensor network. The high noise immunity and resolvability of these methods makes them ideal for cost-effective wireless sensor networks operating in indoor channels. Second for non-LoS conditions the resultant pseudo-spectrum generated by these methods provides the means to construct the ideal location based fingerprint. We provide an in depth analysis of limitation as well as advantages inherent in all of these methods through a detailed behavioral analysis under constrained environments. Hence, the bandwidth versatility, higher resolution capability and higher noise immunity of the TD-MUSIC algorithm and the FD-EV method’s ability to resurface submerged signal peaks when the signal subspace dimensions are underestimated are all presented in detail.

Data mining is the powerful technique, which can be widely used for discovering the customers’ behaviors as well as customer’s preferences. As a result, it has been widely used in top level companies for evaluating their Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system today. In this study, a new K-means clustering method proposed to evaluate the cluster customers’ profitability in telecommunication industry in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, RFM model mainly used as an input variable for K-means clustering and distortion curve used to identify optimal number of initial clusters. Based on the results, telecommunication customers’ profitability in Sri Lanka mainly categorized into three levels.
