Comparative quantitative analysis of fruit oil from Hippophae rhamnoides(seabuckthorn) by qNMR, FTIR and GC–MS

Objective: To develop a qNMR method for quantitative analysis of triacylglycerols in fruit oil of Hippophae rhamnoides(seabuckthorn, SBT) and analyze commercial samples of SBT oils using GC–MS and ***: SBT fruit oil(IPHRFH) was extracted with hexane and the triglyceride(TAG) was isolated by vacuum liquid chromatography. Six different branded SBT oils purchased from e-commerce suppliers(Amazon) and in-house prepared SBT oil was analyzed by qNMR and fatty acyl composition of TAGs determined by using NMR. In-house oil was also analysed by GC–MS and FTIR ***: The qNMR results showed that the oil contained 80.3% of triacylglycerol(TAG). The SBT oil TAGs comprised of linolenate 6.6%, palmitoleate/oleate 65.4%, and total saturated fatty acyl chain including palmitate 28% as determined by qNMR. GC–MS analysis revealed that the major acyl functionalities present in the TAG were palmitoleic acid 36.5%, oleic acid 12.9%, palmitic acid 21.2%, and linoleic acid 18%. Of the six commercial samples analyzed, samples from only one supplier(SW) were fruit oil;All others were the seed oils or mix of fruit oil and seed oil. The labels for samples except for the SW did not indicate whether it was fruit oil or seed ***: The results suggest that SBT oil should be analyzed by combination of GC–MS, FTIR and qNMR for factual content of free fatty acid or TAGs, which are chemically different in nature and affect the quality of oil. GC–MS showed the content of omega free fatty acids after hydrolysis, while qNMR and FTIR showed the content of TAGs. The major acyl functionalities found in SBT fruit oil TAGs are palmitoleate/palmitate/oleate, while linoleate and linonelate make up a minor fraction. Furthermore,analysis of commercial samples showed discrepancies between label claims and actual content.

Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna Using Air as Substrate for S-Band Communication

A Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna model is proposed using air as a substrate to study the characteristics of designed antenna. The dimensions of designed antenna are 17 mm × 16.66 mm with substrate at frequency 3.525 GHz. In this paper, the simulation is performed by using software Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave studio based on finite difference time domain technique. The characterization of the designed antenna was analyzed in terms of return loss, bandwidth, directivity, gain, radiation pattern, VSWR.

A Case of Esophageal Perforation Presenting as Cavitary Pneumonia: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges

Esophageal perforation, a rare condition, can arise from iatrogenic, traumatic, or spontaneous origins. Even when therapy is initiated within the first 24 hours, it is associated with a mortality rate of up to 25%. Due to the varied initial presentation, treatment may be delayed, leading to poorer outcomes. Here, we present a unique case of a 27-year-old schizophrenic patient who initially presented with acute respiratory failure and septic shock and was ultimately diagnosed with cavitary pneumonia secondary to esophageal perforation.

Evaluation of fully covered self-expanding metal stents in benign biliary strictures and bile leaks

AIM: To investigate the use of fully covered metal stents in benign biliary strictures (BBS) and bile leaks. METHODS: We studied 17 patients, at Harbor-UCLA Medical center (Los Angeles), with BBS (n=12) and bile leaks (n=5) from July 2007 to February 2012 that had received placement of fully covered self-expanding metal stents (FCSEMs). Fourteen patients had endoscopic placement of VIABIL (Conmed, Utica, New York, United States) stents and three had Wallflex (Boston Scientific, Mass) stents. FCSEMS were 8 mm or 10 mm in diameter and 4 cm to 10 cm in length. Patients were followed at regular intervals to evaluate for symptoms and liver function tests. FCSEMS were removed after 4 or more weeks. Resolution of BBS and leak was documented cholangiographically following stent removal. Stent patency can be defined as adequate bile and contrast flow from the stent and into the ampulla during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) without clinical signs and/or symptoms of biliary obstruction. Criterion for bile leak resolution at ERCP is defined as absence of contrast extravasation from the common bile duct, cystic duct remanent, or gall blad-der fossa. Rate of complications such as migration, and instent occlusion were recorded. Failure of endoscopic therapy was defined as persistent biliary stenosis or continuous biliary leakage after 12 mo of stent placement. RESULTS: All 17 patients underwent successful FC- SEMS placement and removal. Etiologies of BBS included: cholecystectomies (n=8), cholelithiasis (n=2), hepatic artery compression (n=1), pancreatitis (n=2), and Whipple procedure (n=1). All bile leaks occurred following cholecystectomy. The anatomic location of BBS varied: distal common bile duct (n=7), common hepatic duct (n=1), hepaticojejunal anastomosis (n=2), right intrahepatic duct (n=1), and choledochoduo-denal anastomatic junction (n=1). An Overview of the Control System for Dose Delivery at the UCSF Dedicated Ocular Proton Beam

Since 1978, the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Ocular Tumor Program has been using particle therapy for treating ocular patients with malignant as well as benign eye disease. Helium ion beams were used initially and were produced by two synchrotron-based systems: first by the 184-inch synchro-cyclotron and later by the Bevalac, at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Since 1994, protons, produced by a cyclotron-based system at the Crocker Nuclear Laboratory (CNL) Eye Treatment Facility (ETF), have been used for this purpose. The CNL cyclotron produces a 67.5 MeV beam, allowing for a uniquely homogeneous beam for eye treatment, without degradation of the beam or manipulation of the beam line. This paper describes, in detail, the control system for beam delivery, as implemented for measuring and delivering the radiation to ocular tumors at CNL. The control system allows for optimal delivery and rapid termination of the irradiation after the desired dose is achieved. In addition, several safeguard systems are discussed, as these are essential for such a system in the event of failure of software, electronics, or other hardware. The QA analysis shows that the total range of the proton beam is 30.7 ± 1.0 mm in water at iso-center. The beam distal penumbra (80% - 20%) is 1.1 mm for a range-modulated beam at a collimator to iso-center distance of 50 mm. Daily QA checks confirm that the range and modulation is within 0.1 mm. The beam flatness and symmetry in a 25 mm diameter beam are ±1% - 2%. Variation in the daily dosimetry system, as compared to standard dosimetry, is within ±3.5%, with a mean variation of 0.72(±1.9)% and 0.85(±2.3)% for segmented transmission ionization chambers IC1 (upstream) and IC2 (downstream), respectively. From May 1994 to the end of 2015, UCSF has treated 1838 proton ocular patients at the Davis ETF. During this period, no treatments were missed due to any cyclotron or control system failures. 背景：高密度脂蛋白胆固醇（hish-density lipoprotein cholesterol，HDL-C）是心血管疾病危险因素，作为治疗靶点受到越来越多的关注。目的：回顾现有的改善高密度脂蛋白（high—density lipoproteins，HDLs）的方法。资料来源：以HDL—C和载脂蛋白A—I为关键词，胆固醇逆向转运、心血管疾病（cardiovascular disease，CVD）预防、药物治疗和治疗作为副主题词，系统检索1965年至2007年5月MEDLINE和Cochrane数据库收录的英文文献，回顾2003至2007年重要心血管病会议大会报告、经Clinical ***注册的正在进行的临床试验以及目前主要心脏病学会公布的指南。研究选择与数据提取：优先选择随机对照试验，其次为汇总分析，再次为机制研究。验证研究和3项重要新药的1期研究亦包括在内。研究入选条件由本文两名作者决定，意见不同时由第三方协商一致解决。数据汇总：在754项研究中，31项随机对照研究符合入选标准。现有治疗方法及生活方式改善可使HDL-C水平增加20％-30％，基础性小规模探索研究已证实，HDL—C水平升高有利于减少主要心血管事件，且不依赖于低密度脂蛋白胆固醇或甘油三酯水平的变化，这种关系比较复杂。人体研究显示，一些新药可以有效升高HDL—C水平，另一些针对HDL代谢或功能的新方法可能收效甚微。结论：目前，有证据表明，在生活方式改善的基础上应积极提高HDL-C水平。正在进行的以HDL代谢途径为特异性靶点的临床研究可能有助于拓展心血管治疗观念。
