Ameliorative Effect of Shade on Seedling Growth—Evidence from Field Experiment of <i>Vachellia farnesiana</i>(L.) Willd

The presence of species diversity in the ecosystem is an important aspect. Simply put, the loss of biodiversity and the formation of ecosystems into monocultures would reduce the productivity of the forest ecosystem than it has abundant diversity. This study conducted with a purpose to get the basic information regarding the effect of shade on the seedling growth. Understanding these relationships in the early years may reveal the important information, which will be helpful for managing and evaluating the silviculture practices. The study was conducted at Dirab Experiments and Agricultural Research Station, South of Riyadh. The experimental plot was managed under the corridor of Eucalyptus camaldulensis stands. Twenty seedlings of Vachellia farnesiana with relative similar height and diameter were planted in each block at a 5 × 5 m2 spacing in march 2017. Three different treatments were established and relatively categorized into Line 1 (without shade), Line 2 (shade until 09:00 a.m.), and Line 3 (shade until 11:00 a.m.). Eight months after planting, several morphological parameters were monthly assessed from November 2017 until April 2018. Also, the number of fruits was observed following the fruit’s season. Seedling growth variation as an effect of shading occurred between the lines of planting in this experiment. The seedling growth was significantly increased by shading treatment, even though target plant species (V. farnesiana) is categorized as intolerant species. Basically, shade helps to generate the favorable local environment for supporting plant growth. This treatment with an appropriate consideration might become an alternative practice for increasing plant productivity.

Background and objectives: Surgery is the primary therapy for localized gastric cancer, but even with the best results only 40% 5-year survival can be achieved with the use of postoperative adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Preoperative therapy might help increase the R0 resection rate, which is an independent predictor of 5-year OS. Our study hypothesized that the concurrent combination of carboplatin-paclitaxel with radiation therapy would result in a pathological CR rate, which will be in turn associated with OAS and DFS benefits. Patients and methods: prospective phase II study included 32 patients with locally advanced gastric adenocarcinoma including gastroesophageal junction who received a combination of neoadjuvant conformal radiotherapy concurrently with carboplatin-paclitaxel followed by surgery. Results: Pathological CR and R0 resection rates were 18.8% and 75% respectively. With a median follow up of 24 months, 2 years disease-free survival was 28.1% and overall survival was 51.3%. The regimen was tolerated with neither grade 4 toxicities nor deaths. Conclusion: Neoadjuvant radiotherapy concomitant with carboplatin-paclitaxel chemotherapy is a well-tolerated approach for patients with locally advanced gastric adenocarcinoma resulting in significant pathological CR and R0 resection margins as reflected by the good DFS and OS.

Objective:To describe the prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies in coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)and to find potential associations between antiphospholipid antibody positivity and clinical ***:From September to November 2020,clinical and laboratory data were collected from 50 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Saiful Anwar General Hospital in malang,*** antibodies were measured by finding Ig m anti-β2 glycoprotein,lupus anticoagulant,and Ig m/Ig G *** characteristics,thrombotic events,ICU admission,and mortality during hospitalization were *** severity was defined by the Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of COVID-19,***:Among 50 patients,5 patients(10.0%)were positive for antiphospholipid antibodies:4 patients(80.0%)had Ig m anti-β2 glycoprotein and 1 patient had Ig G anti-cardiolipin(20.0%)and Ig m anti-cardiolipin(20.0%),none of lupus anticoagulant was *** antibodies were associated with anosmia(OR 8.1;95%CI 1.1-57.9;P=0.018),nausea and vomiting(OR 12.4;95%CI 1.2-122.6;P=0.010),diarrhea(OR 9.8;95%CI 1.3-70.9;P=0.010),cardiovascular disease(OR 1.4;95%CI 1.0-1.9;P=0.001),chronic kidney disease(OR 12.0;95%CI 1.6-90.1;P=0.05),acute coronary syndrome(OR 29.3;95%CI 2.0-423.7;P=0.001),moderate(OR 0.11;95%CI 0.01-1.10;P=0.031)and severe(OR 18.5;95%CI 1.8-188.4;P=0.002)disease severity,and in-hospital mortality(OR 8.1;95%CI 1.1-57.9;P=0.018).However,there is no correlation between the presence of antiphospholipid antibody and ICU ***:In summary,the prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies in COVID-19 patients is low,mainly against Ig m anticardiolipin,and is associated with an acute coronary syndrome,gastrointestinal manifestations,moderate and severe disease severity,and increased risk of mortality.

Gamma Irradiation Effect on the Thermal Stability, Optical and Electrical Properties of Acrylic Acid/ methyl methacrylate Copolymer Films

Copolymer films of Acrylic acid/ methyl methacrylate AAc/mmA with comonomer composition of 60/40 was prepared and then irradiated by gamma irradiation. The effect of irradiation on some of the physical properties of the copolymer films was investigated. The dose level ranged from 5 to 200 kGy. The thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the thermal stability of the films increased with irradiation dose up to 100 kGy then it started to decrease. The results of the UV-Visible spectroscopy of the films showed a decrease in the values of optical band gap and band tail width with doses starting from 100 kGy. The DC conductivity (?DC) of the films was found to decrease to about three orders of magnitude from its original value with irradiation dose up to 100 kGy then it started to increase with higher doses. moreover, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss values were found to increase with dose up to 100 kGy which may be attributed to the increase in the number of dipoles in the films due to the irradiation of the copolymer films in air. The results indicated that crosslinking dominated over chain scission in the copolymer films with irradiation dose up to 100 kGy then at higher doses, chain scission dominated.

Objective： To study the timing of Bevacizumab （BVC） in the overall treatment strategy of advanced metastatic colorectal cancer - early use （first-line） or later use. methods： 41 patients with progressive metastatic colorectal carcinoma were included. Patients were randomized to receive chemotherapy with or without BVC. Primary end point was objective response. Secondary end points were median survival, time to tumor progression, and toxicity. Results： Partial response with second-line BVC group constituted 25% and 18.8% in patients with first-line chemotherapy and BVC-based regimen respectively, compared to 11.8% and 5.9% with second-line chemotherapy. median time to progression was 3.1 vs. 2.3 months for cases with first-line chemotherapy and BVC-based regimens respectively. median survival was 8.2 vs. 4 months in both groups respectively （P = 0.019）. Conclusion： Second-line chemotherapy combined BVC had higher disease control rate （partial response and stable disease）, median time to progression and median survival in BVC-naive patients compared to patients with first-line BVC-based therapy. BVC should be maintained in the second- and third-line settings, as cases with BVC discontinuation had significantly lower median time to disease progression and median survival. Selection of patients for use of BVC was recommended with taking into consideration the cost-benefit value and that the discontinuation of BVC would increase tumor progression.

A simple, low-cost, and home-built electrostatic spray deposition （ESD） system with the stable cone-jet mode was used to deposit nickel oxide （NiO） thin films on glass substrates kept at temperature of 400 ℃ as the primary precursor solution of 0.1 m concentration hydrated nickel chloride was dissolved in isopropyl alcohol. Electrical measurements showed that these films were of n-type conductivity while their resistance response to hydrogen flow in air ambient was varied by 2.81% with the rise and recovery time of 48 s and 40 s, respectively.

Background: The optimal TRT dose/fraction for LD-SCLC remains debatable, and due to increasing number of population in Egypt and number of patients as well, so reducing the duration of radiation therapy is favored. This study was conducted using etoposide and cisplatin (EP) concurrently with accelerated hypofractionated TRT to evaluate the response and toxicity of this protocol in the treatment of patients with limited-disease small cell lung cancer (LD-SCLC). Patients and Methods: Thirty patients with previously untreated LD-SCLC were enrolled into this study between June 2012 and February 2015. All patients received etoposide 100 mg/m2 days 1 to 3 and cisplatin 25 mg/m2 days 1 to 3 with start of accelerated hypofractionated thoracic radiation therapy on first day of the second cycle of chemotherapy of 55 Gy, 2.5 Gy/fraction over 30 days. The idea of application from DNA information organization for providing the next generation super-computers has been proposed by lessons learned from nature. Thus, molecular environment of reserving information was considered as succeeding generation of a mother-board project containing some subcategories with various applications. mERI, constructed based on the binary coding system using DNA synthesizer machine, enables retrievable reading of molecular structures using DNA sequencer machine. It has high capacity for reservation of information about 1.212 × 1011 Kb/cm2 with long-term stability. It can be used in various fields of science and technology regarding its high capacity, small size and safety measures.
