An inside-out vein graft filled with platelet-rich plasma for repair of a short sciatic nerve defect in rats

Platelet-rich plasma containing various growth factors can promote nerve regeneration. An inside-out vein graft can substitute nerve autograft to repair short nerve defects. It is hypothesized that an inside-out vein graft filled with platelet-rich plasma shows better effects in the repair of short sciatic nerve defects. In this study, an inside-out vein autograft filled with platelet-rich plasma was used to bridge a 10 mm-long sciatic nerve defect in rats. The sciatic nerve function of rats with an inside-out vein autograft filled with platelet-rich plasma was better improved than that of rats with a simple inside-out vein autograft. At 6 and 8 weeks, the sciatic nerve function of rats with an inside-out vein autograft filled with platelet-rich plasma was better than that of rats undergoing nerve autografting. Compared with the sciatic nerve repaired with a simple inside-out vein autograft, the number of myelinated axons was higher, axon diameter and myelin sheath were greater in the sciatic nerve repaired with an inside-out vein autograft filled with plateletrich plasma and they were similar to those in the sciatic nerve repaired with nerve autograft. These findings suggest that an inside-out vein graft filled with platelet-rich plasma can substitute nerve autograft to repair short sciatic nerve defects.

Influences of diel and tidal cycles on fish assemblage in eelgrass(Zostera marina) bed of southern Korea during autumn

Short-term tidal and diel variations of autumn fish assemblage in a Zostera marina bed were investigated using 3 h interval samplings for 24 h in both spring and neap tide using a small beam trawl.A total of 1 346 fishes belonging to 19 species were collected at spring tide,whereas 1 115 fishes belonging to 17 species were at neap *** common fish species were Nuchequula nuchalis,Acanthogobius flavimanus,Takifugu niphobles,Acentrogobius pflaumii,and Pholis nebulosa with the former three species dominating at spring tide,while the latter two species being abundant at neap *** variation in abundance was significant with higher abundance at night than day,but there were no significant differences between spring and neap tides,and between ebb and flood tides（three-way ANOVAs）.Diel variation in the abundance of fishes may be influenced by tidal range and cycle,and day-night differences of food availability and behaviors of fishes ***-metric multidimensional scaling（n MDS） ordination and analysis of similarity（ANOSim） results revealed significant differences in species compositions both between day and night,and between spring and neap *** beds are highly productive marine ecosystem,and thus,our results will contribute to conservation of seagrass ecosystem in the study area.

Direct Synthesis of Molybdenum Phosphide Nanorods on Silicon Using Graphene at the Heterointerface for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Reduction

Transition metal phosphides(TMPs)and transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)have been widely investigated as photoelectrochemical(PEC)catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).Using high-temperature processes to get crystallized compounds with large-area uniformity,it is still challenging to directly synthesize these catalysts on silicon photocathodes due to chemical incompatibility at the ***,a graphene interlayer is applied between p-Si and MoP nanorods to enable fully engineered interfaces without forming a metallic secondary compound that absorbs a parasitic light and provides an inefficient electron path for hydrogen ***,the graphene facilitates the photogenerated electrons to rapidly transfer by creating Mo-O-C covalent bondings and energetically favorable band *** a bridging role of graphene,numerous active sites and anti-reflectance of MoP nanorods lead to significantly improved PEC-HER performance with a high photocurrent density of 21.8 mA cm−2 at 0 V versus RHE and high ***,low dependence on pH and temperature is observed with MoP nanorods incorporated photocathodes,which is desirable for practical use as a part of PEC *** results indicate that the direct synthesis of TMPs and TMDs enabled by graphene interlayer is a new promising way to fabricate Si-based photocathodes with high-quality interfaces and superior HER performance.

Pprimary breast lymphoma （PBL） is rare, accounting for 0.04%-0.50% of breast malignancies and 1.7% of extranodal lymphoma The originally descnibect diagnostic criteria for PBL2 remains the standard definition for this disease. These criteria are breast location as the clinical site of presentation, absence of history of previous lymphoma or evidence of widespread disease at diagnosis, close association of lymphoma with breast tissue in pathologic specimens, and involvement of ipsilateral lymph nodes if they develop simultaneously with PBL.

Increased end-stage renal disease risk in patients with inflammatory bowel disease:A nationwide populationbased study

Aim To estimate the risk of end-stage renal disease(ESRD)in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS From January 2010 to December 2013, patients with Crohn's disease(CD) and ulcerative colitis(UC) were identified, based on both the International Classification of Diseases, 10 th revision(ICD-10) and the rare,intractable disease registration program codes from the National Health Insurance(NHI) database in South Korea. We compared 38812 patients with IBD to ageand sex-matched non-IBD controls with a ratio of 1:*** newly diagnosed with ESRD were identified with the ICD-10 *** During a mean follow-up of 4.9 years, ESRD was detected in 79(0.2%) patients with IBD and 166(0.1%)controls. The incidence of ESRD in patients with IBD was0.42 per 1000 person-years. Patients with IBD had a significantly higher risk of ESRD than controls [adjusted hazard ratio(HR) = 3.03; 95% confidence interval(CI):1.77-5.20; P imilar between the UC and control groups(0.37 vs 0.37 per 1000 person-years; adjusted HR = 2.01;95%CI: 0.90-4.51; P = 0.089).CONCLUSION The risk of ESRD was elevated in patients with CD, but not UC. Patients with CD should be monitored carefully for signs of renal insufficiency.

Effect of composite yogurt enriched with acacia fiber and Bifidobacterium lactis

Aim: To investigate whether composite yogurt with acacia dietary fiber and Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) has additive effects in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: A total of 130 patients were randomly allocated to consume, twice daily for 8 wk, either the composite yogurt or the control product. The composite yogurt contained acacia dietary fiber and high-dose B. lactis together with two classic yogurt starter cultures. Patients were evaluated using the visual analogscale via a structured questionnaire administered at baseline and after treatment. RESULTS: improvements in bowel habit satisfaction and overall IBS symptoms from baseline were significantly higher in the test group than in the control group (27.16 vs 15.51, P = 0.010, 64.2 ± 17.0 vs 50.4 ± 20.5, P improvement in overall IBS symptoms was significantly higher in the test group than in the control group (72.4 ± 18.4 vs 50.0 ± 21.8, P improvement in bowel habit satisfaction from baseline was significantly higher in the test group than in the control group (32.90 vs 7.81, P = 0.006). CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that composite yogurt enriched with acacia fiber and B. lactis has greater therapeutic effects in patients with IBS than standard yogurt.

Effect of gastric acid suppressants and prokinetics on peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis

Aim: To investigate the effect of gastric acid suppressants and prokinetics on peritonitis development in peritoneal dialysis(PD) ***: This was a single-center, retrospective study. The medical records of 398 PD patients were collected from January 2000 to September 2012 and analyzed to compare patients with at least one episode of peritonitis(peritonitis group, group A) to patients who never had peritonitis(no peritonitis group, group B). All peritonitis episodes were analyzed to compare peritonitis caused by enteric organisms and peritonitis caused by non-enteric ***: Among the 120 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 61 patients had at least one episode ofperitonitis and 59 patients never experienced peritonitis. Twenty-four of 61 patients(39.3%) in group A and 15 of 59 patients(25.4%) in group B used gastric acid suppressants. Only the use of H2-blocker(H2B) was associated with an increased risk of PD-related peritonitis; the use of proton pump inhibitors, other antacids, and prokinetics was not found to be a significant risk factor for PD-related peritonitis. A total of 81 episodes of peritonitis were divided into enteric peritonitis(EP) or non-enteric peritonitis, depending on the causative organism, and gastric acid suppressants and prokinetics did not increase the risk of EP in PD ***: The use of H2B showed a trend for an increased risk of overall PD-related peritonitis, although further studies are required to clarify the effects of drugs on PD-related peritonitis.
