The olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae is a major olive pest in Algeriaand other Mediterranean countries. Its attacks, in some cases, seriously compromised production. Bacillus thuringiensis is a spore-forming soil bacterium which produces a protein crystal toxic to some insects. The objective of this study was to search for isolates toxic to larvae and adults of B. oleae. Four doses test were performed on neonate larvae, second instar larvae and third instar larvae. Seven Bt strains examined, showed highest toxicity levels against adults. 86% mortality was observed against neonate larvae after 7 days of application by Bt toxin isolate. The mortality of the second instar larvae was 65% mortality at dose of 108 UFC/mL. The third instar larvae was very susceptible to Bt strain with 70% of mortality. This study demonstrated that some local Algerian B. thuringiensis isolates exhibit toxic potential that could be used to control B. oleae.

Statistical analyses and descriptive characterizations are sometimes assumed to be offering information on time series *** the scientific interest suggested by such assumptions,the relationships between descriptive time series features(e.g.,temporal dependence,entropy,seasonality,trend and linearity features)and actual time series forecastability(quantified by issuing and assessing forecasts for the past)are scarcely studied and quantified in the *** this work,we aim to fill in this gap by investigating such relationships,and the way that they can be exploited for understanding hydroclimatic forecastability and its *** this end,we follow a systematic framework bringing together a variety of–mostly new for hydrology–concepts and methods,including 57 descriptive features and nine seasonal time series forecasting methods(i.e.,one simple,five exponential smoothing,two state space and one automated autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average methods).We apply this framework to three global datasets originating from the larger Global Historical Climatology Network(GHCN)and Global Streamflow Indices and Metadata(GSIM)*** these datasets comprise over 13,000 monthly temperature,precipitation and river flow time series from several continents and hydroclimatic regimes,they allow us to provide trustable characterizations and interpretations of 12-month ahead hydroclimatic forecastability at the global *** first find that the exponential smoothing and state space methods for time series forecasting are rather equally efficient in identifying an upper limit of this forecastability in terms of Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency,while the simple method is shown to be mostly useful in identifying its lower *** then demonstrate that the assessed forecastability is strongly related to several descriptive features,including seasonality,entropy,(partial)autocorrelation,stability,(non)linearity,spikiness and heterogeneity features

This paper discusses the integration between GIS and hydrological models and presents a case study relating to the upper section of Moulouya River Basin (UMRB) situated in the east of Morocco. The Basin is an inland water-shed with a total area of approximately 10,000 km2, stretching in the junction between the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas Mountain and the Middle Moulouya basin. From ArcGIS ArcHydro framework data models, different parameters of the Moulouya River and its catchment area have been defined. DEM based ArcHydro model was run on Aster-GDEM V2 data at a horizontal spatial resolution of 30 meters. Several raster and vector products of the Upper Moulouya River and its catchment area have been defined at the end of the model. Final results of the models were discussed and compared with the reality. These results can be used in baseline for advanced hydrology and geomorphology research on the catchment area. They can support for decision-making on ground and surface water resource, distribution and management.

BACKGROUND Liver transplantation is the most important therapeutic intervention for end-stage liver disease(ELD).The prioritization of these patients is based on the model for end-stage liver disease(MELD),which can successfully predict short-term ***,despite its great validity and value,it cannot fully incorporate several comorbidities of liver disease,such as sarcopenia and physical frailty,variables that can sufficiently influence the survival of such ***,there is growing interest in the importance of physical frailty in regard to mortality in liver transplant candidates and recipients,as well as its role in improving their survival *** To evaluate the effects of an active lifestyle on physical frailty on liver transplant *** An observational study was performed within the facilities of the Department of Transplant Surgery of Aristotle University of *** liver transplant candidate patients from the waiting list of the department were included in the *** that were bedridden,had recent cardiovascular incidents,or had required inpatient treatment for more than 5 d in the last 6 mo were excluded from the *** following variables were evaluated:Activity level via the International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ);functional capacity via the 6-min walking test(6MWT)and cardiopulmonary exercise testing;and physical frailty via the Liver Frailty Index(LFI).RESULTS According to their responses in the IPAQ,patients were divided into the following two groups based on their activity level:Active group(A,10 patients);and sedentary group(S,10 patients).Comparing mean values of the recorded variables showed the following results:MELD(A:12.05±5.63 vs S:13.99±3.60;P>0.05);peak oxygen uptake(A:29.78±6.07 mL/kg/min vs S:18.11±3.39 mL/kg/min;P<0.001);anaerobic threshold(A:16.71±2.17 mL/kg/min vs S:13.96±1.45 mL/kg/min;P<0.01);6MWT(A:458.2±57.5 m vs S:324.7±55.8 m;P<0.001);and LFI(A:3.75±0.31 vs

Acute complicated diverticulitis, particularly with colon perforation, is a rare but serious condition in transplant recipients with high morbidity and mortality. Neither acute diverticulitis nor colon perforation has been reported in young heart-lung grafted patients. A case of subclinical peritonitis due to perforated acute sigmoid diverticulitis 14 years after heart-lung transplantation is reported. A 26-year-old woman, who received heart-lung transplantation 14 years ago, presented with vague abdominal pain. Physical examination was normal. Blood tests revealed leukocytosis. Abdominal X-ray showed air-fluid levels while CT demonstrated peritonitis due to perforated sigmoid diverticulitis. Sigmoidectomy and end-colostomy (Hartmann's procedure) were performed. Histopathology confirmed perforated acute sigmoid diverticulitis. The patient was discharged on the 8th postoperative day after an uneventful postoperative course. This is the first report of acute diverticulitis resulting in colon perforation in a young heart-lung transplanted patient. Clinical presentation, even in peritonitis, may be atypical due to the masking effects of immunosuppression. A high index of suspicion, urgent aggressive diagnostic investigationof even vague abdominal symptoms, adjustment of immunosuppression, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and immediate surgical treatment are critical. Moreover, strategies to reduce the risk of this complication should be implemented. Pretransplantation colon screening, prophylactic pretransplantation sigmoid resection in patients with diverticulosis, and elective surgical intervention in patients with nonoperatively treated acute diverticulitis after transplantation deserve consideration and further studies.

Schwannomas are rare tumors derived from the cells of Schwann that form the neural sheath. When located in the gastrointestinal tract, they constitute together with leiomyoma, leiomyoblastoma, and leiomyosarcoma, the gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Peripheral nerve sheath tumors represent 2-6% GIST with most common location, the stomach and the small intestine. Schwannomas of the colon and rectum are extremely rare and radical excision with wide margins is mandatory, due to their tendency to recur locally and become malignant, if left untreated. In the present study, we report a rare case of a sigmoid schwannoma, which was successfully treated in our department and reviewed the literature.

AIM： To investigate the prognostic significance of PECAM-1, ICAM-3 and HLA-DR antigens in patients with primary non-Hodgkin＇s gastric lymphoma. METHODS： We immunohistochemically studied PECAM-1, ICAM-3 and HLA-DR antigen expression in 36 B-cell MALT-type primary gastric lymphoma patients. Ten non-malignant and ten healthy gastric tissue specimens were used as controls. Clinicopathological and survival data were correlated with the staining results. RESULTS： HLA-DR antigen expression was detected in 33 gastric lymphoma patients （91.7%） and 6 nonmalignant patients （54.5%）. PECAM-1 stained tumor cells of 10 patients （27.8%）, endothelial cells of 9 patients （25%） and inflammatory infiltrate of 4 patients （40%） with benign gastric disease. ICAM-3 expression was observed on the tumor cells of 17 patients （47.2%）, while 5 non-malignant patients （50%） were stained positive as well. None of the healthy controls was stained for any of the genes studied. In the multivariate analysis, HLA-DR antigen and PECAM-1 were proved to be statistically significant independent prognostic factors associated with a favourable and an unfavourable prognosis respectively （P= 0.009 and P= 0.003）. In the univariate analysis, PECAM-1（＋）/ICAM-3（-） and HLA-DR（-）/ICAM-3（-） patients exhibited a significantly decreased overall survival compared to those with the exactly opposite gene expression patterns （P=0.0041 and P= 0.0091, respectively）. Those patients who were HLA-DR（＋）/ICAM-3（＋）/PECAM-I（-）（n = 8） had a significantly higher survival rate compared to the rest of the group （n = 24）（P= 0.0289）. CONCLUSION： PECAM-1, ICAM-3 and HLA-DR are representative markers of tumor expansion potential and host immune surveillance respectively. Their combined use may help us to identify high-risk patients who could benefit from more aggressive therapeutic protocols.

The palm, Elaeis guineensis, has its origins in Africa but is planted on a commercial basis in several countries. Statistics for 2002 showed that in the lead for land mass under oil palm cultivation is Indonesia, at 3,769,000. ha, followed by Malaysia at 3,376,000. ha; however, the world’s leading producer of palm oil is still Malaysia, since the 1970’s. Both countries are predicted to produce 82.4% of the world’s palm oil production by the year 2005. However, the palm is susceptible to basal stem rot, a devastating disease which results in direct loss of field stands and to which no effective chemical control is yet available. Caused by Ganoderma boninense, infected palms appear symptomless, at the first sign of disease, at least 50% of the internal trunk tissue stem would have actually rotted. This study investigated the efficacy of Trichoderma harzianum (isolate FA 1132) as a biological control agent, using 6-month old oil palm seedlings as models and the experiment performed in a greenhouse at 29- 30 ℃. ambient conditions. The plants were artificially infected with G. boninense and a conidial suspension of 1×109-9×109 spores/mL was applied as a soil drench at 1L/plant every 2 weeks for 20 weeks. The parameters examined were efficacy of the biocontrol agent and the effect of Trichoderma- incorporated mulch in addition to the soil drench. Efficacy was assessed in terms disease severity index (DSI) where a higher percentage indicates a higher severity. Results showed that infection first sets in on untreated plants at week 12 and got worse progressively. The completely untreated plants were all infected and the DSI at 20 weeks after infection (wa.i.) was 92.5%. Plants given only a Trichoderma -infused food base supplement without conidial suspension gave a DSI of 70% whereas those given a conidial soil drench without supplemental food base gave a DSI of 85% at 20 w.a.i. Infected plants given a conidial treatment together with a food base supplement gave a DSI of 5%

The European Union, in an effort to boost the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in power generation, applies supportive tools consisting in financial motivation either as grants or as subsidies. According to welfare economics, a subsidy should reflect the external benefits;otherwise a distortion of competition takes place. The most widespread method to calculate externalities is the avoided cost approach, despite the fact that it encounters equally all the RES units leading to technological neutrality. In the present article, the avoided cost approach with the objective social justification of RES subsidies/feed in tariffs (FITs) in the case of Greece, for the year 2014, is applied. The results show a high gap between the current FITs and the suggested ones amounting to approximately 40%. This uncomfortable outcome indicates that, at least in the case of Greece, either the level of the current guaranteed tariffs is not socially justified, or the CO2 value derived from the European carbon market does not reflect the real social cost, or that the avoided cost method, alone, is not adequate to explain the level of subsidies. In light of the foregoing, the need for the development of a concrete and integrated methodology for calculating all RES externalities emerges.
