Public＇s knowledge of the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists：a critical issue in eye care service utilisation

AIM：To assess the public＇s knowledge of the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists and identify the factors associated with ***：The study was a population-based random survey of adults aged 18 years or older conducted in Enugu,south eastern Nigeria,between March and June,*** on respondents＇ socio-demographics,clinical profile,and knowledge of the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists were collected using a 28-item *** were analysed using descriptive and analytical *** of P〈0.05 were considered statistically ***：The respondents（P=394） comprised 198 males and 196 females（sex ratio =1.01：1）,aged 18-70（30.9 ±10.8） *** majority of respondents were single（57.4%）,possessed secondary education（96.9%）,employed（65.2%） and had no health insurance（77.4%）.Their clinical profile showed previous eye exam 54.1%,spectacle wear 41.6%and contact lens wear 5.6%.In the multivariate analysis,participants＇ good knowledge of the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists was significantly associated with educational status（OR：0.32,95%cI：0.23-0.44,P〈0.0001,β =-0.988）,employment status（OR：1.8,95%cI：1.45-2.25,P〈0.0001,β=0.124）and previous eye examination（OR：1.63,95%cI：1.29-2.07,P〈0.0001,β =0.549）.cONcLUSION：Participants＇ socio-demographic and clinical characteristics are important predictors of good *** findings may have implications for all stakeholders in eye care *** is need for knowledge enhancement,by the government and eye care providers,through population-based eye health literacy campaigns.

Effect of diminazene aceturate,levamisole and vitamin c combination therapy in rats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei

Objective:To investigate the effect of diminazene aceturale(DA) alone or in combination with either levamisole and/or Vitamin c in albino rats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei ***:Thirty adult male albino rats,randomly assigned into 6 groups(A—F) of 5rats each were *** were either infected with 1×10~a trypanosomes intraperitoneally(groups A-E) or uninfected(group F).The different groups were treated respectively as follows:group A-with 3.5 mg/kg DA;group B-3.5 mg/kg DA and 7.5 mg/kg levamisole;group c-3.S mg/kg DA and 100 mg/kg vitamin c;and group D-3.S mg/kg DA and 7.S mg/kg levamisole and 100 mg/kg vitamin *** E was left *** assessed include:rectal temperature,body weight changes,packed cell volume(PcV),Haemoglobin concentration(Hb),total leucocyte count(TLc) differential leucocyte count(DLc),parasitaemia,clinical signs and ***:Average pre-patent period of 5 days was *** in the blood were cleared in all treated groups(A-D) within 48 hours post treatment(PT).Untreated rats in group E died between25 and 32 days post infection(PI).Relapse was not recorded in all the treated groups(A-D).The initial reduction in PcV,Hb,TLc and increases in rectal temperature following infection were reversed by the *** rats that received drug combinations(groups B,c and D)showed faster and higher recovery rates than the uninfected control and group ***:Levamisole and/or Vitamin c combination with DA were more effective in the treatment of rats infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei.

Enhanced asphalt dynamic modulus prediction: A detailed analysis of artificial hummingbird algorithm-optimised boosted trees

This study introduces and evaluates a novel artificial hummingbird algorithm-optimised boosted tree(AHAboosted)model for predicting the dynamic modulus(E*)of hot mix asphalt *** a substantial dataset from NcHRP Report-547,the model was trained and rigorously *** metrics,specifically RMSE,MAE,and R2,were employed to assess the model's predictive accuracy,robustness,and *** benchmarked against well-established models like support vector machines(SVM)and gaussian process regression(GPR),the AHA-boosted model demonstrated enhanced *** achieved R2 values of 0.997 in training and 0.974 in testing,using the traditional Witczak NcHRP 1-40D model *** features such as test temperature,frequency,and asphalt content led to a 1.23%increase in the test R2,signifying an improvement in the model's *** study also explored feature importance and sensitivity through SHAP and permutation importance plots,highlighting binder complex modulus|G*|as a key *** the AHA-boosted model shows promise,a slight decrease in R2 from training to testing indicates a need for further ***,this study confirms the AHA-boosted model as a highly accurate and robust tool for predicting the dynamic modulus of hot mix asphalt concrete,making it a valuable asset for pavement engineering.

The clinical Burden and Spectrum of Ophthalmic Disorders in Stone Industry Employees from Nigeria

Background: Workers in the stone industry are exposed to many ocular health hazards. There is a paucity of data on the profile of ophthalmic disorders in this vulnerable group, especially in developing countries. Aim: We aimed to determine the burden and spectrum of ophthalmic disorders in stone workers in Abakiliki, Nigeria. Methods: In a population-based cross-sectional survey of stone industry workers conducted in Nigeria, between February and April 2012, relevant data from participants were collected. Descriptive and comparative statistics were performed and statistical significance was indicated by p Results: Participants (n = 384;males, 158;females, 226) were aged 32 ± 11.8 SD years (range, 14 - 68 years) and comprised 105 (27.3%) stone quarry workers and 226 (72.7%) stone processing workers. Of these, 298 (77.6%) had some form of ophthalmic disorder, which frequently involved the ocular anterior segment (69.9%) or posterior segment (4.9%). Work-related eye injuries were reported by 36.5% of employees. Leading disorders were anterior segment: pterygium-associated (37.9%). Visual impairment (2.9%) and monocular blindness (1.3%) were reported. The prevalence of eye disorders was not significantly associated with participant socio-demographic or work characteristics. Male gender (p = 0.001) and engagement in stone processing (p = 0.001) were significant predictors of work-related eye injury. conclusions: Among stone industry workers in Abakaliki, Nigeria, there is a high prevalence of ophthalmic disorders, frequently of the ocular anterior segment, and work-related eye injuries are commonly reported. Occupational eye health education, provision of protective eye devices and appropriate ophthalmic care are suggested.

Swamp Forest Use and Loss in the Niger Delta: contextual and Underlying Issues

Forest ecosystems are vital not only for the ecosystem and biogeochemical processes, but also for the livelihood of forest dependent communities for which its continual existence is a necessity. This study explored the pattern of forest use in the hinterlands of the Niger Delta and sought to elucidate the drivers of forest loss and how the ownership and management of the forest plots influenced the changes in the forest ecosystem. Ecosystem services reduction and forest loss/degradation were found to be increasing over the years due to crude oil activities, urbanization/developments, population increase, agricultural activities and natural causes like flood. While each factor contributed to forest loss directly and indirectly, and varied from community to community, agricultural activities and population growth were responsible for most of the losses across the landscape. Even though agricultural activities were essential and thrived in the region, sustainable forest (land) uses could have reduced the associated implications of such land uses;but this was however hampered by the farming practises (shifting cultivation) across most of the communities. Lack of proper, effective and sustainable forest management structures, poor individual commitment and monitoring of forest activities were found to encourage forest loss at different spatial scales. Provision of alternative sources of livelihood and ensuring that suitable guidelines on forest abstraction and harvest are enforced across the region, are steps to promoting biodiversity conservation and resource management.

Species Distribution and Patterns in a Forest-savannah Ecotone: Environmental change and conservation concerns

Understanding the dynamics and patterns of biodiversity in transition forests is vital in promoting conservation and addressing environmental change *** work focused on elucidating the diversity,structure,and carbon potentials of a forest-savannah *** achieve this,8 forest plots that measured 50 m×50 m each was set up in a forest-savannah landscape and used to identify and measure tree species≥10 cm diameter at breast height(DBH measured at 130 cm).Species importance value was used to summarize the biodiversity patterns and the aboveground carbon estimates were elicited with the allometric equation.43 species within 22 families were enumerated and the diversity was generally low(ranging from 1.82-2.5).Species such as Daniellia oliveri(Rolfe)Hutch.&Dalziel,Py-rostria guinnensis *** ***,Dialium guineense *** Margariteria discoidea(Baill.)G.L Webster were the dominant species,and had the highest importance values of 113.06,55.13,28.16 and 16.95,respectively,while Allophlus africanus ***.,Annona senegalensis Pers.,Anthonatha macrophylla ***.,Ficus capensis *** Lecaniodiscus cupanioides Planch had the least importance values of 0.16 *** estimates ranged from 16.43172-42.9298 t/*** frequent species with higher basal areas no doubt contributed much to the carbon esti-mates,but did not have higher capacities in storing *** the ecosystem with more carbon-dense species was seen as a suitable strategy for addressing environmental change in the ecosystem and region.

Energy consumption is increasing yearly all over the world due to the increase in population and demand of energy. The world largely depends on a hydroelectric energy supply, thermal electric energy supply which is all non-renewable energy resources. Nevertheless, non-renewable energy resources are rapidly decreasing per year due to increasing rate of energy consumption. The quest for the discovery of another abundant resource of energy has attracted many scientists into development of renewable energy technologies like photovoltaic energy which are the technology that convert solar radiation into electricity. For the past several years, different photovoltaic devices like inorganic, organic, and hybrid solar cells have been invented using different methods for different application purposes. Moreover, high conversion efficiency of silicon solar cells, the high cost of module and complicated production processes involved in the production restricted commercialization of photovoltaic solar cells as a means of electricity supply. Among all organic solar cells, Dye-Sensitized Solar cells (DSScs) are the most efficient, low cost and easily implemented technology. This review paper focuses on clarifying the technological meaning of the structure of DSScs, Various types of DSScs materials, working electrode and working mechanism of DSSc, transparent and conductive substrate, nanocrystalline semiconductor film electrode, photosensisitizer (dye), electrolyte, carbon layer electrode, zinc oxide (ZnO) layer, zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) layer, benefits of DSScs and application, the efficiency and challenges for research and development of DSScs to upgrade the current efficiency.
