Hepatitis B in Senegalese Blood Donors: Low Prevalence after Five Blood Donations?

Background: Over the past two decades, blood transfusion safety has made significant advances in the fight against infectious diseases. However, hepatitis B is still a problem in blood banks due to its high endemicity in Senegal. In this context, we proposed to first determine the prevalence of HBs antigen (HBsAg) in regular and new blood donors. Second, to determine the influence of the number of blood donations on the prevalence of hepatitis B. Materials and Method: We conducted a retrospective transversal study using data from all blood donations received at the Principal Hospital of Dakar Blood bank from July 2007 to December 31, 2021. Hepatitis B testing was carried out with Automaton E411 (Roche Diagnostics). For all donors, information on age, sex, hepatitis B serology, and the number of donations was collected through the lab’s computer system. Data entry and statistical analysis were performed with Epi-info version 7. Results: HBsAg carriers were identified in 4311 primary donors, corresponding to a prevalence of 12.39% (IC 95% = 12.04 - 12.74). The prevalence of the HBsAg antigen was higher in men (12.9%) than in women (6.85%). Men are twice as likely to be infected with HBV as women (OR = 2.00 (IC 95% = 1.85 - 2.17)). The highest prevalence (12.4%) was found in young adults (23 - 29) years old. After 10 donations, the prevalence of the HBs antigen was stable at around 1%. Individuals with a single blood donation and individuals with 2 to 5 blood donations are 9 and 7 times more likely to carry the HBs antigen than regular donors (more than 10 blood donations), respectively. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the endemic nature of hepatitis B in Senegal. On the other hand, the non-negligible prevalence of the virus in first-time donors reminds us of the need for continuous improvement in donor selection. Management and Control of a DC Bus Powered by Renewable Energies

This article proposes a method of management and control of a continuous bus powered by renewable energies for autonomous applications. The DC bus is obtained from two systems of renewable sources (the solar system and the wind system) and storage battery (Lithium Ion). The continuous bus control and management procedure require efficiency in the control of the charge and discharge of the battery according to the load energy demand (DC Motor). The battery charging process is non-linear, varying over time with considerable delay, so it is difficult to achieve the best performance on control with energy management using traditional control approaches. A fuzzy control strategy is used in this article for battery control. To improve battery life, fuzzy control manages the desired state of charge (SOC). The entire system designed is modeled and simulated on MATLAB/Simulink Environment.

Study of the Variation in Total and Reducing Sugars Contents According to the Variety and According to the Position Where the Fruit (Mango) Was Harvested from Five Mango Varieties Exploited in Senegal

In this study, the results show that total sugar contents depend on the variety and the position where the fruit (mango) has been harvested. This variation in total sugar contents is observed according to the following varieties: the Bk (Boukodiekhal) variety (bottom position 45 mg/100 mL) then Bk (intermediate and bottom position 40 mg/100 mL) and with the Dr (Diourou) variety the content according to the intermediate position is 63 mg/100 mL while the content according to its bottom position is 56 mg/100 mL. The same is observed for variety Knt (Kent). For the variety factor, we see that the Dr and Sl (Sierra Leone) varieties are the richest in total sugars. Compared to the variation in reducing sugar content, the effect of position is less pronounced. Nevertheless, the statistical results show that the contents vary according to the varieties. There is a very significant variation in reducing sugar content between certain varieties. The variety Kt (Keitt) (45 mg/100 mL) is the richest in reducing sugars but compared to the lower position of the variety Bk, they are statistically identical. Variety Knt remains the poorest in reducing sugars 20 mg/ 100 mL.

Creutzfeldt Jacob’s Disease: A Senegalese Observation

Creuzfelt-Jakob Disease is a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disease that results in fatal, transmissible, subacute, spongiform encephalopathy characterized by rapidly progressive dementia and movement disorder. We present a 62-year-old male with no medical history who was admitted to our hospital because of gait and balance disturbance, language impairment and progressive motor deficit of the four limbs. A neurological examination found frontal lobe syndrome signs, myoclonic movements, pyramidal and extra-pyramidal signs. Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging detected high intensity areas in the basal ganglia. EEG showed generalized triphasic sharp-wave complexes. A Cerebro Spinal Fluid examination found protein 14-3-3. Death occurred six months after onset. This is the first known case of Creuzfelt-Jakob Disease documented in Senegal.

Quality of Well Water Used for Market Gardening from Lendeng Area Located in Common of Rufisque (Senegal)

This study analysis was conducted to know the quality of well water around the market gardening area of Lendeng located in the common of Rufisque Est (Senegal). In this study, six groundwater samples were taken near the Lendeng market gardening area. The physicochemical parameters of water such as pH, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), potassium (K+), iron (Fe2+), chloride (Cl-), sulfate (SO3-4) and phosphate (PO3-4) were measured. The analysis results obtained show sulphate and phosphate have the highest levels. These results were compared to drinking water standards from the World Health Organization (WHO). The correlation coefficient ANOVA was applied to the test result of the samples. The statistical study showed that the well water in the market gardening area of Lendeng is not polluted.

Comparative Study between the PID Regulator and the Fuzzy Regulator Applied to the Operation of a Brushless DC Motor

This paper presents the results of research on speed regulation of a brushless DC motor. This is mainly a comparative study between a PID regulator and a fuzzy regulator applied to the operation of this type of engine in order to find the best control. The BLDC engine must operate under various speed and load conditions with improved performance and robust and complex speed control. Because of this complexity, the traditional PID command encounters difficulties in controlling the speed of a BLDC. Another control technique is currently developing and is producing good results. This is the fuzzy controller that handles process control problems, that is, managing a process based on a given set point per action on the variables that describe the process. To achieve the desired results, the brushless DC machine model will be studied. With the model obtained, both types of regulator will be tested. A synthesis of the observed comparison results will enable a conclusion to be drawn on the performance of the two types of regulators driving a BLDC (Brushless DC).

Study of the Biochemical Composition of Senegalese Mango Varieties Intended for Export and Local Consumation

Biochemical characterization was carried out on five mango varieties grown in Senegal, two of which are intended for export (Kent and Keitt) and three to local consumption, on the one hand, and to national marketing, on the other. It can be seen that the flavanols composition is between “0.74 ± 0.03 mg/100 g” to “4.70 ± 0.33 mg/100 g” and the total polyphenols composition is “265.83 ± 33.70 mg gallic acid/100 g” to “834.29 ± 25.78 mg gallic acid/100 g”. This analysis shows that the variety Bk is richer in polyphenols followed by the variety Dr then Knt and finally the lowest proportions are noted with the varieties Kt and SL. The analysis of antioxidant activity shows us percentages ranging from “4.16% ± 2.68% inhibition” to “50.21% ± 3.91% inhibition”. It was noted that the SL and Knt varieties give the highest inhibition percentages of “50.21 ± 3.91” and “33.97 ± 0.36” respectively. Variety Bk gives the lowest percentage followed by variety Kt. The Dr variety is the richest in flavonoids “11.75 ± 0.27” followed by the SL variety “11.27 ± 0.10” and the lowest composition is noted in the Knt variety “1.91 ± 0.04”. For total sugars, the most important contents are found in the varieties: Bk “12.71 ± 0.32 mg/100 g” followed by Dr “11.5 ± 0.33 mg/100 g” and SL “9.86 ± 0.06 mg/100 g”. This time the variety Kt stands out with also important proportions. For quantification, there is a slight difference in the values obtained for the different varieties studied. However, the highest values are observed in local varieties: “0.36 ± 0.06 g/100 g” for Bk and Dr followed by SL “0.31 ± 0.01 g/100 g”. The study of the mineral composition shows that the local varieties are the richest and the Knt variety is the poorest. The difference in composition noted within the same variety can be explained by the fact that some varieties have an advanced maturity compared to others.

Performance of the Boost Chopper, Comparative Study between PI Control and Neural Control to Regulate Its Output Voltage

In this study, we investigate the performance of a boost converter regulating its output voltage using two control methods: Proportional-Integral (PI) control and neural control. Both methods are implemented on a simulation platform (Matlab/Simulink) and evaluated in terms of accuracy, response speed, and robustness to disturbances. Indeed, the output voltage of converters exhibits imperfections that require a control method to optimize efficiency when applying a variable load. Results show that neural control offers superior performance in terms of accuracy and response time, with faster and more precise regulation of the output voltage. On the other hand, PI control proves to be more robust against disturbances. These findings can help guide the selection of the appropriate control method for a boost converter based on the specific requirements of each application.

Factors Associated with Full Vaccination of Children Aged 12 to 23 Months in the Commune of Thiomby (Kaolack/Senegal)

Introduction: Data on the complete vaccination of children in rural areas and the factors associated with it are poorly known. Knowledge of these factors is necessary for the adoption of effective vaccination strategies. The aim of our study was to determine the proportion of children aged 12 to 23 months fully vaccinated before the age of 12 months in the commune of Thiomby and to identify associated factors. Methods: A descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from 15 January to 15 February 2020 in Thiomby among of children aged 12 to 23 months and their mothers/caregivers. The sampling was carried out in two-step clusters. Bivariate analysis was done with Epi-Info version 7.***.2.16. Results: The sample included 380 mothers/caregivers with children aged on average 24.7 years. Among them, 93.2% were housewives, 29.4% had attended school and 12.8% had a monthly income of more than 100,000 CFA francs. In total, 296 children were fully inoculated i.e. 77.9% of children aged 12 - 23 months had received all the appropriate vaccines by the age of 12 months. In addition, 42% of mothers and babysitters had a good level of knowledge about vaccination (benefits, side effects, etc.). The primary source of information for mothers about vaccination was the midwife, with 88 percent of women being informed through this channel. The age of mothers less than or equal to 30 years would significantly reduce (p Conclusion: Factors such as a good level of knowledge of mothers and access to information through midwives during prenatal and postnatal consultations contribute to an improvement in complete vaccination coverage among children aged 12 to 23 months.

Kohonen’s Algorithm Applied to the Scintigraphic Image for an Aid in the Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer Metastasis

To partition the scintigraphic image, several methods are used, among which is Kohonen’s self-organizing map algorithm. The objective of this study was to perform an ascending hierarchical classification (HAC) on the results of the Kohonen self-organizing map. This makes it possible to carry out the second phase necessary for the elaboration of the classifier by grouping the neurons as well as possible into 3 classes then by reconstituting the scintigraphic image from the 3 classes. This partition proceeds by successive groups, thus merging at each iteration two subsets of neurons using a measure of similarity which is Ward’s method. In this method, the algorithm aggregates the nearest neurons into classes. This allows us to obtain a dendrogram that looks like a tree. And this one needs to be cut. And to have an adequate cut-off level, we have established the variation of the Davies Bouldin index as a function of the number of classes. The minimum value of this index gave the optimal number of classes which corresponded to 3 in the study. These three groups A, B, C have a variable intensity. This intensity can be high, it can be medium or low. The high, medium and low intensities corresponded respectively to metastases for class A, to degenerative or inflammatory phenomena for class B and to normal radiopharmaceutical uptake for class C. To confirm this strong suspicion, we performed reconstructions using a filter. And after this reconstruction, we had images like at the entrance. And for the interpretation of these images, we used a visual metric. This enabled us to note that for the interval [0 - 50[, the image is not contrasted and no lesion could be detected. Over the interval [50 - 200[, we observed the distribution of the radiopharmaceutical over the entire skeletal whole body.
