Adjuvant chemotherapy in curatively resected rectal cancer: How valid are the data?

BACKGROUnD According to the result of the Cochrane review published in 2012,postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy(CTx)is associated with a survival benefit for rectal cancer patients operated for cure in comparison to patients who underwent only the surgical *** To analyze the quality of the data supporting the advantage of adjuvant CTx after surgery for rectal *** the times of increasing health care costs,it is imperative to offer the patient an evidence-based therapy that justifies potential side effects as well as *** Overall survival was selected as endpoint of *** the 21 included papers which analyzed this endpoint,we identified those three publications which have the highest weights to influence the final *** validity of these papers was analyzed using the COnSORT checklist for randomized controlled *** performed a second meta-analysis excluding the three analyzed studies(n=18)in order to assess their impact on the overall result of the original ***,we performed a third meta-analysis excluding all studies(n=16)which showed a statistically improved overall *** The detailed analysis of the three most relevant RCTs according to the items of the COnSORT checklist showed several *** up to 47%of the items,inappropriate answers were ***,a lack of information regarding therandomization procedure as well as the absence of allocation concealment,blinded set-up,of intention-to-treat analysis and omission of sample size calculation were common problems of the analyzed *** exclusion of these three studies from the meta-analysis did not affect the general result of the meta-analysis,still confirming a survival advantage after adjuvant *** exclusion of single studies with a statistically significant outcome improvement,the meta-analysis of the remaining 16 studies again shows a statistically significant result due in part to a large remaining sample size.C

natural killer T cells and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease:Fat chews on the immune system

natural killer T cells (nKT) are an important subset of T lymphocytes. They are unique in their ability to produce both T helper 1 and T helper 2 associated cytokines, thus being capable of steering the immune system into either inflammation or tolerance. Disruption of nKT cell numbers or function results in severe deficits in immune surveillance against pathogens and tumor cells. Growing experimental evidence suggests that hepatosteatosis may reduce resident hepatic as well as peripheral nKT cells. Those models of hepatosteatosis and the change in nKT cell numbers are associated with a disruption of cytokine homeostasis, resulting in a more pronounced release of proinflammatory cytokines which renders the steatotic liver highly susceptible to secondary insults. In this letter to the editor, we focus on recently published data in the World Journal of Gastroenterology by Xu and colleagues demonstrating reduced peripheral nKT cells in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, compare those findings with ours and others in different animal models of hepatosteatosis, and hypothesize about the potential underlying mechanism.

Species of the ciliate class Heterotrichea Stein,1859 are a cosmopolitan group of unicellular eukaryotic microorganisms,many of which have been widely used as models in various fields of research such as regenerative biology,functional ecol-ogy,environmental toxicology,and symbiotic ***,species identification in the heterotrich family Condylos-tomatidae,especially the most species-rich and type genus Condylostoma Bory de Saint-Vincent,1824,remains challenging due to incomplete original descriptions,few reliable distinguishing characters,and overlapping features between different *** study presents an updated revision of Condylostoma and its related genus Condylostomides da Silva neto,1994 based on descriptions of five species,including nine populations collected from China,using both morphological and molecular *** main findings are as follows:(1)43 nominal species and about 130 populations are reviewed,result-ing in the recognition of 30 valid species of Condylostoma and eight valid species of Condylostomides;(2)keys,synonyms,biogeographic distributions and amended/improved diagnoses of all valid species are provided;(3)based on the available data,four new Condylostoma species(*** ***.,*** ***.,*** ***.,and *** ***.),one new combination(Condylostomides minimus(Dragesco,1954)***.&***.),and two corrected names(Condylostoma ancestrale Villeneuve-Brachon,1940 *** Condylostomides nigrus(Dragesco,1960)***.)are suggested;(4)cryptic species are detected and proposed for the first time to form the Condylostoma curvum spe-cies complex;(5)three highly confusing Condylostoma species,***,***,and ***,are redefined for the first time based on modern taxonomic methods;(6)a‘flagship’species,Condylostomides coeruleus,is recorded for the first time from the continent of Asia,substantially expanding its biogeography;(7)ciliature adjacent to the distal end of the paroral mem

Ciliates in the subclass Hypotrichia have long been difficult to classify as they are one of the most polymorphic and highly differentiated groups,leading to their systematics remaining *** relationships within the hypotrich family Strongylidiidae have been ambiguous due to discordance between the morphological and genetic *** this study,a new strongylidiid genus Heterouroleptus is established,mainly based on the novel mode of origin of the ventral cirral rows:left ventral cirral row(LVR)originates from frontal-ventral-transverse cirral anlagen(FVTA)Ⅲ(anterior portion),IV(middle portion),and V(rear portion);right ventral cirral row comes from the entire FVTA VI.A new species,Hetero-uroleptus weishanensis ***.,***.,is investigated along with the morphometric and molecular data from a population of Strongylidium *** new sequences and nuclear gene markers(single-gene and multi-gene)are provided to analyze the phylogenetic relationships of strongylidiids,with the COI gene utilized to uncover further genetic information at species level and *** results reveal that:(1)Strongylidiidae is monophyletic and has a close relationship with Dorsomarginalia;(2)Heterouroleptus *** a clade that is sister to all the other strongylidiids;(3)Hemiamphisiella Foissner,1988 and Pseudouroleptus Hemberger,1985 should not be synonyms,and both genera should be subdivided due to their variable morphological characteristics;(4)LVR originating from three anlagen is a plesiomorphy of *** discovery of the origin of the LVR not only contributes to the establishment of the genus Heterouroleptus,but also helps to improve the diagnosis of the family Strongylidiidae.

The brain's extracellular matrix(ECM),which is comprised of protein and glycosaminoglycan(GAG)scaffolds,constitutes 20%-40% of the human brain and is considered one of the largest influencers on brain cell functioning(Soles et al.,2023).Synthesized by neural and glial cells,the brain's ECM regulates a myriad of homeostatic cellular processes,including neuronal plasticity and firing(Miyata et al.,2012),cation buffering(Moraws ki et al.,2015),and glia-neuron interactions(Anderson et al.,2016).Considering the diversity of functions,dynamic remodeling of the brain's ECM indicates that this understudied medium is an active participant in both normal physiology and neurological diseases.

Calix[n]arenes was utilized to detect PABA,the primary sunscreen *** study investigates the interaction of calix[4]arene(C4),calix[6]arene(C6),and PABA using the Langmuir method and first-principle density functional theory(DFT).Using the Langmuir-Schaefer(LS)technique,an ultrathin film composed of calix[n]arenes and their complexes with PABA was deposited on various *** on the Langmuir study,the PABA molecule was bonded to the lower rims of both C4 and C6 with the host-guest ratio of 1:*** of the LS films formed were then characterized by ultravioletvisible spectroscopy(UV-Vis),Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and carbon,hydrogen,nitrogen,sulfur elemental analyzer(CHnS).The band gap reduction obtained in the DFT study denotes the charge transfer interaction with promising reactivity between the calix[n]arenes and *** sensing of PABA by C4 and C6 is successful based on the formation of bonding between them due to the hosts’effective trapping *** outcomes of this study could be applied to drug delivery systems for future pharmaceutical and medical applications.

The task to estimate all the parameters of an unknown quantum state, also called quantum state tomography, is essential for characterizing and controlling quantum systems. In this paper, we utilize observable time traces to identify the initial quantum state of a closed quantum system, based on the state space approach in the control theory. In the informationally complete scenario, we show that with a linear regression estimation (LRE), the mean squared error (MSE) scales as , where n is the resource number. In the informationally incomplete scenario, we introduce regularization LRE to perform the state tomography task. We employ PBH test to demonstrate that closed quantum systems with only one observable are informationally incomplete and propose using observables, where d is the dimension of the quantum state, for informational completeness. numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

In today’s manufacturing industries,hard competition between rival firms makes it compulsory for researchers to design lighter and cheaper machine components due to the megatrends of cost-effectiveness and *** this point,aluminum syntactic foams(ASFs)are new-generation engineering composites and come into the upfront as a *** to their features like low density,sufficient elongation,and perfect energy absorption ability,these advanced foams have been considerably seductive for many industrial sectors *** this study,an industrial-oriented automatic die casting technology was used for the first time to manufacture the combination of AA7075/porous expanded clay(PEC).Micro evaluations(optical and FESEM)reveal that there is a homogenous particle distribution in the foam samples,and inspections are compatible with the other ASF ***,T6 aging heat treatment was operated on one half of the produced foams to explore the probable impact of aging on the compressive *** results show that PEC particles can be an alternative to expensive hollow spheres used in the previous ***,a favorable relationship is ascertained between the aging treatment and mechanical properties such as compression strength and plateau strength.

Predicting effects of tunnel throttling of annular freeway vehicular flow by a continuum model

Fluid flow throttling is common in industrial and building services *** tunnel throttling of vehicular flow is caused by the abrupt number reduction of roadway lane,as the tunnel has a lower lane number than in the roadway normal *** predict the effects of tunnel throttling of annular freeway vehicular flow,a three-lane continuum model is ***Ⅲof the tunnel is completely blocked due to the need of tunnel rehabilitation,*** exists mandatory net lane-changing rate from laneⅢto laneⅡjust upstream of the tunnel entrance,which is described by a model of random number generated through a golden section *** net-changing rate between adjacent lanes is modeled using a lane-changing time expressed explicitly in algebraic *** paper assumes that the annular freeway has a total length of 100 km,a two-lane tunnel of length 2 km with a speed limit of 80 km/*** free flow speeds on lanesⅠ,ⅡandⅢare assumed to be 110,100 and 90 km/h *** on the three-lane continuum model,numerical simulations of vehicular flows on the annular freeway with such a tunnel are conducted with a reliable numerical method of 3rd-order *** results reveal that the vehicular flow has a smaller threshold of traffic jam formation in comparison with the case without tunnel *** fuel consumption can be estimated by interpolation with time averaged grid traffic speed and an assumed curve of vehicle *** vehicle fuel consumption is lane number dependent,distributes with initial density concavely,ranging from 5.56 to 8.00 *** throttling leads to an earlier traffic jam formation in comparison with the case without tunnel throttling.
