Characteristics of patients with columnar-lined Barrett's esophagus and risk factors for progression to esophageal adenocarcinoma

AIM： To determine the risk factors for the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma in these patients with columnar-lined esophagus （CLE）. METHODS： Data collected retrospectively on 597 consecutive patients diagnosed at endoscopy and histology to have CLE at Leeds general Infirmary between 1984 and 1995 were analyzed. Factors evaluated included age, sex, length of columnar segment, smoking, and drinking habits, history of non-steroidal ingestion, presence of endoscopic esophagitis, ulceration or benign strictures and presence of Helicobacter pylori in esophageal biopsies. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for the development of adenocarcinoma. RESULTS： Forty-four patients presented or developed esophageal adenocarcinoma during follow-up. Independent risk factors for the development of adenocarcinoma in palJents with CLE were males （OR 5.12, 95%CI 2.04-12.84, P = 0.0005）, and benign esophageal stricture （OR 4.37, 95%CI 2.02-9.45, P = 0.0002）. Male subjects and patients who developed benign esophageal stricture constituted 86% （n = 38） of all patients who presented or developed esophageal adenocarcinoma. The presence of esophagitis was associated with a significant reduction in the development of esophageal carcinoma （OR 0.28, 95%CI 0.13-0.57, P = 0.0006）. No other clinical characteristics differentiate between the non-malignant and malignant group. CONCLUSION： In patients with CLE, endoscopic surveillance for the early detection of adenocarcinoma may be restricted to male subjects, as well as patients who develop benign esophageal strictures.

Emerging insights into the function of very long chain fatty acids at cerebellar synapses

Very long chain-saturated and-polyunsaturated fatty acids(VLC-SFA and VLC-PUFA, respectively) are a functionally important class of fatty acids containing 28 carbons or more in their acyl chain. They are synthesized by the elongation of very long fatty acids-4(ELOVL4) enzyme, expressed mainly in the brain, retina, skin, testes, and meibomian gland, where these fatty acids are found(Agbaga et al., 2008). Further, these organs exhibit tissuespecific VLC-PUFA and VLC-SFA biosynthesis and incorporation into complex lipids for specific functions. In the brain, skin, and Meibomian glands, the ELOVL4 mainly makes VLC-SFA, which are incorporated into complex sphingolipids. In the retina, the ELOVL4 makes VLC-PUFA that are incorporated into phosphatidylcholine, that are critical for visual function, while in testes and sperm, the VLC-PUFA are incorporated into sphingolipids that are critical for fertility(Yeboah et al., 2021).

The development of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells(LT-SOFCs)is of significant importance for realizing the widespread application of *** has stimulated a substantial materials research effort in developing high oxide-ion conductivity in the electrolyte layer of *** this context,for the first time,a dielectric material,CaCu_(3)Ti_(4)O_(12)(CCTO)is designed for LT-SOFCs electrolyte application in this *** individual CCTO and its heterostructure materials with a p-type Ni_(0.8)Co_(0.15)Al_(0.05)LiO_(2−δ)(NCAL)semiconductor are evaluated as alternative electrolytes in LT-SOFC at 450–550℃.The single cell with the individual CCTO electrolyte exhibits a power output of approximately 263 mW cm^(-2) and an open-circuit voltage(OCV)of 0.95 V at 550℃,while the cell with the CCTO–NCAL heterostructure electrolyte capably delivers an improved power output of approximately 605 mW cm^(-2) along with a higher OCV over 1.0 V,which indicates the introduction of high hole-conducting NCAL into the CCTO could enhance the cell performance rather than inducing any potential short-circuiting *** is found that these promising outcomes are due to the interplay of the dielectric material,its structure,and overall properties that led to improve electrochemical mechanism in CCTO–***,density functional theory calculations provide the detailed information about the electronic and structural properties of the CCTO and NCAL and their heterostructure CCTO–*** study thus provides a new approach for developing new advanced electrolytes for LT-SOFCs.

The benefits of regular physical activity are well ***,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary *** investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(MSK)anatomy course *** synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy *** fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously *** the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving MSK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental *** participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of MSK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).Many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce *** majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social ***,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement MSK course *** with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students.

Early Cretaceous dinosaur and other tetrapod tracks of southwestern China

In recent years the Lower Cretaceous red beds of southwestern China have yielded more than 20 significant dinosaur-dominated tracksites. More than half occur in the Jiaguan Formation with the remainder in the Feitianshan and Xiaoba formations. Collectively these sites provide evidence of at least 13 distinct dinosaurian trackmaker morphotypes, in addition to two avian theropod(bird)morphotypes and pterosaur and turtle tracks. Together these total 17 morphotypes provide a data base of 479 potential trackmakers, probably representing the same number of individuals. Such an ichnological database provides a useful proxy paleoecological census of tetrapod communities in the area during the Early Cretaceous, and is especially significant given the complete absence or scarcity of skeletal remains reported from these *** composition of ichnofaunas in all three formations is heavily saurischian(theropod and sauropod) dominated with a high diversity of distinctive theropod morphotypes,mostly assignable to known ichnogenera. Moreover, ichnofaunal data from multiple sites are generally consistent between sites and an indication of the reliability and repeatability of track census data. Such regionally-widespread data are rapidly superseding the information available from the skeletal record in the corresponding area, and must therefore be considered of high paleontological value.

In this article, we prove the following statement that is true for both unbounded and bounded Vilenkin systems： for any ε∈ （0, 1）, there exists a measurable set E C [0, 1） of measure bigger than 1 - s such that for any function f ∈ LI[0, 1）, it is possible to find a function g ∈ L^1 [0, 1） coinciding with f on E and the absolute values of non zero Fourier coefficients of g with respect to the Vilenkin system are monotonically decreasing.

Comparative population genomics reveals glacial cycles to drive diversifications in tropical montane birds(Aves,Timaliidae)

Many bird species are specialized to live in the broadleaved,evergreen forests in the mountain regions in Southeast *** mountain habitats are not continuously distributed as the different mountain areas are separated by lowlands,which has restricted gene flow and thus contributed to the high biological diversity in this *** degree of connectivity between mountain areas has fluctuated with the Pleistocene glacial cycles,being largest during the glaciations when the mountain forests spread to lower *** we study how the intermittent periods of restricted gene flow and connectivity between the populations of five montane species of babblers(Aves,Timaliidae)in Vietnam may be traced in their *** results suggest that the babbler species in the Central Highlands have been isolated from their sister-populations in northern Vietnam for between ca.585 and 380 *** two species with populations in both the Central Highlands and the Da Lat region,we found that these split at more or less the same time(440–340 kya).We also found a significant statistical correlation between the time of the splits of these populations and the lowest altitude at which they are known to occur(no similar correlation was found with the geographic distances between populations).The populations in northern Vietnam show higher genetic variation than their counterparts in South-Central Vietnam,supporting the postulate that smaller populations may have lower genetic variation than *** accordance with this,we found the lowest genetic variation in the two species with the smallest populations in the Central *** two populations also show low levels of genomic *** results show that the south-central populations of the studied babbler species are genetically distinct from their sister-populations in northern Vietnam,providing additional argument for the long-term protection of the evergreen mountain forests in Southeast Asia.
