The seismic vulnerability index(Kg) is a parameter that depends on the dynamic properties of soil. With this parameter, it is possible to evaluate the vulnerability of a point-based site under strong ground motion. Since it is related to the natural vibration period and amplifi.a.ion factor, the parameter can be calculated for both soil and structure. in this study, HVSR microtremor measurements are recorded at more than 200 points in the Van region to generate a seismic vulnerability index map. After generating the map, it is determined that the hazard potential and seismic vulnerability index is high at the sites close to Van Lake and at the densely populated city center. Damage information of the buildings investi.a.ed after the 2011 Van earthquakes(Mw = 7.1) are placed on the seismic vulnerability index map and it is realized that there may be a correlation between the damage and the seismic vulnerability index. There is a high correlation, approxi.a.ely 80 percent, between the damage rate map based on the damaged building data and the K_g values. in addition, vulnerability indexes of buildings are calculated and the effect of local soil conditions and building properties on the damage levels are determined. From the results of this study and the site observations after the 2011 Van earthquakes, it is found that structural damage is not only structure-dependent but is also related to the dynamic behavior of soil layers and local soil conditions.

Artificial neural networks have been widely used over the past two decades to successfully develop empiri.a. models for a variety of geotechni.a. problems. in this paper, an empiri.a. model based on the product-unit neural network (PUNN) is developed to predict the load-deformation behaviour of piles based SPT values of the supporting soil. Other parameters used as inputs include particle grading, pile geometry, method of installation as well as the elastic modulus of the pile material. The model is trained using full-scale pile loading tests data retrieved from FHWA deep foundations database. From the results obtained, it is observed that the proposed model gives a better simulation of pile load-deformation curves compared to the Fleming’s hyperbolic model and t-z approach.

in this paper, an empiri.a. model based on self-evolving neural network is proposed for predicting the flexural behavior of ferrocement elements. The model is meant to serve as a simple but reliable tool for esti.a.ing the moment capacity of ferrocement members. The proposed model is trained and vali.a.ed using experimental data obtained from the literature. The data consists of information regarding flexural tests on ferrocement specimens which include moment capacity and cross-sectional dimensions of specimens, concrete cube compressive strength, tensile strength and volume fraction of wire mesh. Comparisons of predictions of the proposed models with experimental data indi.a.ed that the models are capable of accurately esti.a.ing the moment capacity of ferrocement members. The proposed models also make better predictions compared to methods such as the plastic analysis method and the mechanism approach. Further comparisons with other data mining techniques including the back-propagation network, the adaptive spline, and the Kriging regression models indi.a.ed that the proposed models are superior in terms prediction accuracy despite being much simpler models. The performance of the proposed models was also found to be comparable to the GEP-based surrogate model.

The Robogymnast is a triple link underactuated pendulum that mimics a human gymnast hanging from a horizontal *** this paper, two multi-objective optimi.a.ion methods are developed using invasive weed optimi.a.ion（iWO）. The first method is the weighted criteria method iWO（WCMiWO） and the second method is the fuzzy logic iWO hybrid（FLiWOH）. The two optimi.a.ion methods were used to investi.a.e the optimum diagonal values for the Q matrix of the linear quadratic regulator（LQR） controller that can balance the Robogymnast in an upright configuration. Two LQR controllers were first developed using the parameters obtained from the two optimi.a.ion methods. The same process was then repeated, but this time with disturbance applied to the Robogymnast states to develop another set of two LQR controllers. The response of the controllers was then tested in different scenarios using simulation and their performance evaluated. The results show that all four controllers are able to balance the Robogymnast with varying accuracies. it has also been observed that the controllers trained with disturbance achieve faster settling time.

The present paper deals with the multiple solutions and their stability analy- sis of non-Newtonian micropolar nanofluid slip flow past a shrinking sheet in the presence of a passively controlled nanoparticle boundary condition. The Lie group transformation is used to find the simi.a.ity transformations which transform the governing transport equations to a system of coupled ordi.a.y differential equations with boundary condi- tions. These coupled set of ordi.a.y differential equation is then solved using the Runge- Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth order （RKF45） method and the ode15s solver in MATLAB. For stability analysis, the eigenvalue problem is solved to check the physi.a.ly reali.a.le solution. The upper branch is found to be stable, whereas the lower branch is unsta- ble. The criti.a. values （turning points） for suction （0 〈 sc 〈 s） and the shrinking parameter （Xc 〈 X 〈 0） are also shown graphi.a.ly for both no-slip and multiple-slip conditions. Multiple regression analysis for the stable solution is carried out to inves- ti.a.e the impact of various pertinent parameters on heat transfer rates, The Nusselt number is found to be a decreasing function of the thermophoresis and Brownian motion parameters.

The PVT-air solar system simultaneously generates electri.a. and thermal ***,increasing the cost-effectiveness of the system requires an appropriate choice of key parameters such as mass flow rate and air channel *** this paper,a PVT-air kit of a single module with a 30°slope was used to measure photovoltaic electricity and air heating power in the city of Sfax,***,a computer method was implemented using the ANSYS Fluent 17.0 software and the MATLAB program to analyse the properties of the airflow and to characterise PVT-air yields under different mass flow rates and *** the comparison of numeri.a. and experimental data,the numeri.a. method was vali.a.ed with a good ***,we have found that increasing of the airflow rate improves the thermal efficiency with a slight change on electri.a. ***,the reduction in depth shows an improvement on thermal efficiency and a negligible effect on electri.a. ***,we have presented the thermal and electri.a. performance of PVT-air as a function of the key parameters with the Hottel-Whillier-Bliss formulation.

On 26 th October 2015, an Mw 7.5 earthquake struck northern Pakistan, with its epicenter located 45 km southwest of Jarm in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. The earthquake resulted from reverse faulting at a depth of 210 km, resulting in 280 fatalities and substantial damage to some 109,123 buildings. Regional seismicity, characteristics of recorded strong motions, damage statistics, and building performance observations are presented. Earthquake damage was mostly constrained to seismic-deficient unreinforced masonry(URM) buildings. Typi.a. failure modes included toppled mi.a.ets, partial or complete out of plane collapse of URM walls, diagonal shear cracking in piers, flexural cracking in spandrels, corner damage, pounding damage, and damage due to ground settlement. The majority of human loss resulted due to failure of URM walls and subsequent roof collapse. URM buildings located in rural hilly areas closer to the epicenter suffered more intense and frequent damage than urban URM buildings located farther away in larger cities.

Cosmic rays(CR)play an important role in space weather-related *** temporal variability,both of a quasi-periodic character as well as an irregular one,has been studied from ground-based direct measurements,as well as from cosmogenic nuclides,over a long *** attempt to describe the current knowledge of selected quasi-periodicities in CR flux in the energy range above the atmospheric threshold,from direct *** power spectrum density(PSD)of the CR time series as measured by neutron monitors(NMs)and by muon detectors has a rather compli.a.ed *** with the shape(slope)of the PSD,knowledge of the contribution of quasi-periodic variations(q-per)to the CR signal is of importance for the modulation,as well as for checking the links of CR to space weather,and/or to space cli.a.e *** rotation of the Earth and solar rotation cause two types of mechanisms behind the certain q-per observed in secondary CR on the Earth’s *** activity and solar magnetic field cyclicities contribute to the q-per signals in CR if studied over a longer *** complexity of the spatial structure of the interplanetary magnetic field(iMF)and its evolution within the heliosphere,in addition to the changes in the geomagnetic field,cause variability in contributions of the q-per in *** spectra are useful tools for checking the fine structure of q-per and their temporal *** a long time NMs and muon telescopes provide information about q-per in CR.

A mathemati.a. model is presented for forced convective slip flow of a nanofluid past a radiating stretching/shrinking *** boundary condition is taken into *** nanofluid model involves the Brownian motion and thermophoresis *** group transformation is used to the transport equations as well as the boundary conditions to develop the simi.a.ity equations,before being solved numeri.a.ly using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth order numeri.a. *** show the effects of the controlling parameters on the dimensionless velocity,temperature,nanoparticle volume fraction,skin friction factor,local Nusselt,and local Sherwood numbers,numeri.a. results are presented both in graphi.a. and tabular *** is found that the friction factor decreases with slip and melting parameters for both stretching/shrinking *** is also found that the Nusselt number decreases with the first order slip while it increases with melting and radiation parameters in both ***,the Sherwood number decreases with the melting parameter both for radiating and non-radiating stretching/shrinking *** excellent agreement is found between the present numeri.a. results and published results.
