Comparison of litterfall production in three forest types in Jeju Island, South Korea

Litterfall, which is influenced by physical and biological factors, is a major pathway for carbon and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to investigate monthly litterfall production in three forests in Jeju Island differentiated by forest composition and precipitation: Cheongsu(Quercus glauca as the dominant species;low precipitation), Seonheulb(Q. glauca as the dominant species;high precipitation), and Seonheulm(Q. glauca and Pinus thunbergii as the dominant species;high precipitation). Litterfall was collected monthly from April to December 2015 and divided into leaf litter, twig, bark, seeds, and unidentified *** patterns of litterfall production varied across stands according to their species composition. However,the amount of leaf litterfall and total litterfall were comparable among stands, ranging from 362 to 375 g m-2 for leaf litter and 524 g m-2 to 580 g m-2 for total *** leaf litter in May was the highest in all stands, while needle litter was the highest in December in *** twig litterfall in July may be attributable to high rainfall with strong winds and storms during the rainy season. Although forest type and climate factor had no influence on litterfall amounts in this study, the pattern of litterfall production was species dependent, suggesting diverse effects on carbon and nutrient cycling in these forests.

Therapeutic potential of exercise-hormone irisin in Alzheimer's disease

Irisin is a myokine that is generated by cleavage of the membrane protein fibronectin type Ⅲ domain-containing protein 5(FNDC5) in response to physical exercise. Studies reveal that irisin/FNDC5 has neuroprotective functions against Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia in the elderly, by improving cognitive function and reducing amyloid-β and tau pathologies as well as neuroinflammation in cell culture or animal models of Alzheimer's disease. Although current and ongoing studies on irisin/FNDC5 show promising results, further mechanistic studies are required to clarify its potential as a meaningful therapeutic target for alleviating Alzheimer's disease. We recently found that irisin treatment reduces amyloid-β pathology by increasing the activity/levels of amyloid-β-degrading enzyme neprilysin secreted from astrocytes. Herein, we present an overview of irisin/FNDC5's protective roles and mechanisms against Alzheimer's disease.

Probabilistic seismic performance assessment of lap-spliced RC columns retrofitted by steel wrapping jackets

In this study, the seismic fragility curves of two reinforced concrete（RC） columns that were lap-spliced at the bottom and retrofitted with steel wrapping jackets were generated. Their seismic performance was probabilistically assessed in comparison to that of lap-spliced or continuous reinforcement RC columns. This study used two types of steel wrapping jackets, a full jacket and a split jacket. Analytical models of the four types of columns were developed based on the experimental results of the columns using Open SEES, which is effective in conducting nonlinear time history analyses. A suite of ten artificial ground motions, modified from recorded ground motions, was used to perform nonlinear time history analyses of the analytical models with scaling of the peak ground acceleration from 0.1 g to 1.0 g in increments of 0.1 g. The steel wrapping jackets did not increase the medians for yield（slight damage state） of the lap-spiced column and did not exceed the corresponding median of the continuous reinforcement column. However, the two steel jackets increased the medians for failure by 1.872 and 2.017 times, respectively, and exceeded the corresponding median of the continuous reinforcement column by 11.8% and 20.5%, respectively.

Evaluation of anti-tubercular activity of linolenic acid and conjugatedlinoleic acid as effective inhibitors against Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Objective: To evaluate a new pharmacological activity/effect of linolenic acid(α- and γ-form) and conjugated-linoleic acid(CLA) causing antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis(Mtb). Methods: The anti-Mtb activity/effect of linolenic acid and CLA were determined using different anti-Mtb indicator methods such as resazurin microtiter assay(REMA) and MGIT 960 system assay. The Mtb was incubated with various concentrations(12.5–200) μg/m L of the compounds and anti-Mtb first-line drugs for 5 d in the REMA, and for 3 wk in MGIT 960 system assay. Results: Linolenic acid and CLA obviously indicated their anti-Mtb activity/effect by strongly inhibiting the growth/proliferation of Mtb in a dosedependent manner in the REMA and the MGIT 960 system assay. Interestingly, linolenic acid and CLA consistently induced anti-Mtb activity/effect by effectively inhibiting the growth/proliferation of Mtb in MGIT 960 system for 21 d with a single-treatment, and their minimum inhibitory concentrations were measured as 200 μg/m L respectively. Conclusions: These results demonstrate that linolenic acid and CLA not only have effective anti-Mtb activity/properties, but also induce the selective-anti-Mtb effects by strongly inhibiting and blocking the growth/proliferation of Mtb through a new pharmacological activity/action. Therefore, this study provides novel perspectives for the effective use of them and the potential that can be used as potent anti-Mtb candidate drugs, as well as suggests the advantage of reducing the cost and/or time for developing a new/substantive drug by effectively repurposing the existing drugs or compounds as one of new strategies for the global challenge of tuberculosis.

Time-domain channel estimator based on cyclic correlationfor OFDM systems with guard interval

Channel impulse response （CIR） can be estimated on the basis of cyclic correlation in time-domain for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing （OFDM） systems, This article proposes a generalized channel estimation method to reduce the estimation error by taking the average of different CIRs. Channel impulse responses are derived according to the different starting points of cyclic correlation. In addition, an effective CIR length estimation algorithm is also presented. The whole proposed methods are more effective to OFDM systems, especialiy to those with longer cyclic prefix. The analysis and the simulation results verify that the mean square error performance is 4-5 dB better than the conventional schemes under the same conditions.

The anti-tubercular activity of Melia azedarach L. and Lobelia chinensis Lour. and their potential as effective anti-Mycobacterium tuberculosis candidate agents

Objective: To evaluate the anti-mycobacterial activity of Melia azedarach L.(M. azedarach) and Lobelia chinensis Lour.(L. chinensis) extracts against the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis(M. tuberculosis).Methods: The anti-M. tuberculosis activity of M. azedarach and L. chinensis extracts were evaluated using different indicator methods such as resazurin microtiter assay(REMA) and mycobacteria growth indicator tube(MGIT) 960 system assay. The M. tuberculosis was incubated with various concentrations(50–800 mg/m L) of the extracts for 5 days in the REMA, and for 4 weeks in MGIT 960 system ***: M. azedarach and L. chinensis extracts showed their anti-M. tuberculosis activity by strongly inhibiting the growth of M. tuberculosis in a concentration-dependent manner in the REMA and the MGIT 960 system assay. Particularly, the methanol extract of M. azedarach and n-hexane extract of L. chinensis consistently exhibited their effects by effectively inhibiting the growth of M. tuberculosis in MGIT 960 system for 4 weeks with a single-treatment, indicating higher anti-M. tuberculosis activity than other extracts,and their minimum inhibitory concentrations were measured as 400 mg/m L and 800 mg/m L, ***: These results demonstrate that M. azedarach and L. chinensis extracts not only have unique anti-M. tuberculosis activity, but also induce the selective antiM. tuberculosis effects by consistently inhibiting or blocking the growth of M. tuberculosis through a new pharmacological action. Therefore, this study suggests the potential of them as effective candidate agents of next-generation for developing a new anti-tuberculosis drug, as well as the advantage for utilizing traditional medicinal plants as one of effective strategies against tuberculosis.

Real-time Volume Preserving Constraints for Volumetric Model on GPU

This paper presents a parallel method for simulating real-time 3D deformable objects using the volume preservation mass-spring system method on tetrahedron *** general,the conventional mass-spring system is manipulated as a force-driven method because it is fast,simple to implement,and the parameters can be ***,the springs in traditional mass-spring system can be excessively elongated which cause severe stability and robustness issues that lead to shape restoring,simulation blow-up,and huge volume loss of the deformable *** addition,traditional method that uses a serial process of the central processing unit(CPU)to solve the system in every frame cannot handle the complex structure of deformable object in ***,the first order implicit constraint enforcement for a mass-spring model is utilized to achieve accurate visual realism of deformable objects with tough constraint *** this paper,we applied the distance constraint and volume conservation constraints for each tetrahedron element to improve the stability of deformable object simulation using the mass-spring system and behave the same as its real-world *** reduce the computational complexity while ensuring stable simulation,we applied a method that utilizes OpenGL compute shader,a part of OpenGL Shading Language(GLSL)that executes on the graphic processing unit(GPU)to solve the numerical problems *** applied the proposed methods to experimental volumetric models,and volume percentages of all objects are *** average volume percentages of all models during the simulation using the mass-spring system,distance constraint,and the volume constraint method were 68.21%,89.64%,and 98.70%,*** proposed approaches are successfully applied to improve the stability of mass-spring system and the performance comparison from our experimental tests also shows that the GPU-based method is faster than CPU-based implementation for all cases.

Parallel Cloth Simulation Using OpenGL Shading Language

The primary goal of cloth simulation is to express object behavior in a realistic manner and achieve real-time performance by following the fundamental concept of *** general,the mass–spring system is applied to real-time cloth simulation with three types of ***,hard spring cloth simulation using the mass–spring system requires a small integration time-step in order to use a large stiffness ***,to obtain stable behavior,constraint enforcement is used instead of maintenance of the force of each *** force computation involves a large sparse linear solving *** to the large computation,we implement a cloth simulation using adaptive constraint activation and deactivation techniques that involve the mass-spring system and constraint enforcement method to prevent excessive elongation of *** the same time,when the length of the spring is stretched or compressed over a defined threshold,adaptive constraint activation and deactivation method deactivates the spring and generate the implicit *** method that uses a serial process of the Central Processing Unit(CPU)to solve the system in every frame cannot handle the complex structure of cloth model in *** simulation utilizes the Graphic Processing Unit(GPU)parallel processing with compute shader in OpenGL Shading Language(GLSL)to solve the system *** this paper,we design and implement parallel method for cloth simulation,and experiment on the performance and behavior comparison of the mass-spring system,constraint enforcement,and adaptive constraint activation and deactivation techniques the using GPU-based parallel method.
