Clinical usefulness of ankle brachial index and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity in patients with ischemic stroke

Ankle brachial index （ABI） and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity （baPWV） are widely used noninvasive modalities to evaluate atherosclerosis. Recently, evidence has increased supporting the use of ABI and baPWV as markers of cerebrovascular disease. This study sought to examine the relationship between ABI and baPWV with ischemic stroke. This study also aimed to determine which pathogenic mechanism, large artery disease （LAD） or small vessel disease （SVD）, is related to ABI or baPWV. Retrospectively, 121 patients with ischemic stroke and 38 subjects with no obvious ischemic stroke history were recruited. First, ABI and baPWV were compared between the groups. Then, within the stroke group, the relevance of ABI and baPWV with regard to SVD and LAD, which were classified by brain magnetic resonance image （MRI） and magnetic resonance angiography （MRA） or computed tomography angiography （CTA） findings, was assessed. The baPWV was higher in the stroke group than non-stroke group （1,944.18±416.6 cm/s vs. 1,749.76±669.6 crn/s, P 〈 0.01）. Regarding LAD, we found that mean ABI value was lower in the group with extracranial large artery stenosis （P 〈 0.01）, and there was an inverse linear correlation between ABI and the grade of extracranial large artery stenosis （P〈 0.01）. For SVD, there was a significant correlation between SVD and baPWV （2,057.6±456.57 cm/s in the SVD （＋） group vs. 1,491±271.62 cm/s in the SVD （-） group; P 〈 0.01）. However, the grade of abnormalities detected in SVD did not correlate linearly with baPWV. These findings show that baPWV is a reliable surrogate marker ofischemic stroke. Furthermore, baPWVand ABI can be used to indicate the presence of small vessel disease and large arterial disease, respectively.

The Influx of the Tsushima Current into the Central Ulleung Basin of East Sea (Sea of Japan), Korea

A total of 85 samples, collected from the UBGH1-9 core taken from the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, Korea, were analyzed using diatom assemblages. 111 diatom species belonging to 46 genera were identified, and three diatom assemblage zones were established on the basis of occurrence and distribution pattern of diatoms. Diatom assemblage zone I（134.10–174 m） is characterized by a relatively high abundance of marine species, while the increased number of the brackish species is recorded in diatom assemblage zone II（75–125 m）. The assemblage zones IIIa became drastic drop of valve abundances and brackish planktons, whereas it became increase during the IIIb. High Td values which indicate an influence of warm current are recorded both in diatom assemblage zone I and III, and low Td values in diatom assemblage zone II. Analysis of diatom assemblages indicating that the depositional condition moved from oceanic to littoral-neritic environments and that paleotemperature underwent a shift from warm to cold condition at the middle interval, and from cold to warm condition in the upper interval of the UBGH1-9 core. This suggests that the lower（130–162 m） and upper intervals（0–20 m） of the UBGH1-9 core were deposited in the warm current condition（Tsushima Warm Current）.

Geometrical and Geotechnical Characteristics of Landslides in Korea under Various Geological Conditions

The goal of this study is to determine the geometrical and geotechnical characteristics of landslides under various geological conditions using detailed field surveys, laboratory soil tests and precipitation records. Three study areas are selected to consider different rocks, including gneiss in Jangheung, granite in Sangju and sedimentary rocks in Pohang, South Korea. Many landslides have occurred in these three areas during the rainy *** records indicate that landslides occurring in the gneiss area of Jangheung and granite area of Sangju may be influenced by the hourly rainfall intensity rather than cumulative ***, landslides occurring in the sedimentary rock area of Pohang may be influenced by hourly rainfall intensity and cumulative rainfall. To investigate the factors that influence these types of landslides, a detailed landslide survey was performed and a series of laboratory soil tests were *** to the detailed field survey, most landslides occurred on the flanks of mountain slopes, and the slope inclination where they occurred mostly ranged from 26 to 30 degrees, regardless of the geological conditions. The landslide in the gneiss area of Jangheung is larger than the landslides in the granite area of Sangju and sedimentary rock area of ***, the landslide in the sedimentary rock area is shorter and shallower than the landslides in the gneiss and granite areas. Thus, the shape and size of the landslide are clearly related to the geological conditions. According to the integrated soil property and landslide occurrence analyses results, the average dry unit weight of the soils from the landslide sites is smaller than that of the soils obtained from the nonlandslide site. The average coefficient of permeability of soils obtained from the landslide sites is greater than that of soils obtained from the non-landslide sites with the same geology. Impact of Spectral Nudging on the Downscaling of Tropical Cyclones in Regional Climate Simulations

This study investigated the simulations of three months of seasonal tropical cyclone （TC） activity over the western North Pacific using the Advanced Research WRF Model. In the control experiment （CTL）, the TC frequency was considerably overestimated. Additionally, the tracks of some TCs tended to have larger radii of curvature and were shifted eastward. The large-scale environments of westerly monsoon flows and subtropical Pacific highs were unreasonably simulated. The overestimated frequency of TC formation was attributed to a strengthened westerly wind field in the southern quadrants of the TC center. In comparison with the experiment with the spectral nudging method, the strengthened wind speed was mainly modulated by large-scale flow that was greater than approximately 1000 km in the model domain. The spurious formation and undesirable tracks of TCs in the CTL were considerably improved by reproducing realistic large-scale atmospheric monsoon circulation with substantial adjustment between large-scale flow in the model domain and large-scale boundary forcing modified by the spectral nudging method. The realistic monsoon circulation took a vital role in simulating realistic TCs. It revealed that, in the downscaling from large-scale fields for regional climate simulations, scale interaction between model-generated regional features and forced large-scale fields should be considered, and spectral nudging is a desirable method in the downscaling method.

Latitudinal gradients of associations between beta and gamma diversity of trees in forest communities in the New World

Aims We analyze two continental data sets of forest communities from across the New World to examine the latitudinal gradients of beta diversity after accounting for gamma diversity and the latitudinal gradient of gamma diversity after accounting for beta *** Correlation and regression analyses were used to relate beta and gamma diversity to latitude along two latitudinal gradients in the New World(one including 72 forest sites located south of the equator and the other including 79 forest sites located north of the equator).Important Findings Beta diversity and gamma diversity were negatively correlated with *** diversity was strongly and positively correlated with gamma diversity(Pearson’s correlation coefficient:0.783 for New World North and 0.848 for New World South).When beta diversity was regressed on latitude and gamma diversity,69.8 and 85.7%of the variation in beta diversity were explained,respectively,for New World North and New World *** gamma diversity was regressed on latitude and beta diversity,81.8 and 84.3%of the variation in gamma diversity were explained,respectively,for New World North and New World *** statistically removing the relationship between beta and gamma diversity,latitude has weak or no relationships with beta and gamma ***,strong positive correlations between beta and gamma diversity may not be considered as evidence of one driving the other along a latitudinal gradient.

Prediction of forming limit curve for pure titanium sheet

Commercially pure titanium（CP Ti） has been actively used in the plate heat exchanger due to its light weight, high specific strength, and excellent corrosion resistance. However, researches for the plastic deformation characteristics and press formability of the CP Ti sheet are not much in comparison with automotive steels and aluminum alloys. The mechanical properties and hardening behavior evaluated in stress-strain relation of the CP Ti sheet are clarified in relation with press formability. The flow curve denoting true stress-true strain relation for CP Ti sheet is fitted well by the Kim-Tuan hardening equation rather than Voce and Swift models. The forming limit curve（FLC） of CP Ti sheet as a criterion for press formability was experimentally evaluated by punch stretching test and analytically predicted via Hora＇s modified maximum force criterion. The predicted FLC by adopting Kim-Tuan hardening model and appropriate yield function shows good correlation with the experimental results of punch stretching test.

A case of gouty arthritis following percutaneous radiofrequency ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma

Percutaneous radiofrequency thermal ablation(RFA) is considered an effective technique for providing local control in the majority of Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) *** RFA is generally well tolerated,recent studies have reported complications associated with *** describe a case of acute gouty arthritis in a 71-year-old man with chronic renal failure who was treated with RFA for a HCC lesion and who had hepatitis B-associated cirrhosis and mild renal *** surveillance of the patient detected a 3.5 cm HCC *** the patient had declined surgery,RFA was chosen for *** the third post-procedural day,the laboratory results showed increases in his uric acid and potassium levels,which were compatible with a tumor lysis syndrome. On the 6th post-procedural day,the patient complained of new right knee *** joint aspiration revealed monosodium urate monohydrate *** made the diagnosis of acute gouty arthritis arising from tumor lysis and liver infarction caused by HCC ablation,which was aggravated by acute renal insufficiency. After adequate hydration and administration of oral colchicines,the patient's right knee pain subsided andthe uric acid serum level returned to *** is the first described case of acute gouty arthritis after RFA for a HCC lesion in a patient with underlying chronic renal *** avoid hyperuricemia and an acute attack of gout after RFA therapy for HCC,early identification of patients at risk is warranted,such as those with a large tumor,rapid tumor growth,and renal insufficiency,and preventative measures should be considered.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis（NASH） is one of the most common liver diseases and a major cause of liver fibrosis worldwide.r-Aminobutyric acid（GABA） is one of the most abundant inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central nervous ***,it has been reported that GABAergic signaling pathways are found in various non-neuronal tissues including the immune system and play a functional *** the present study,we investigated whether administration of GABA has effects on NASH through its immunomodulatory *** test this hypothesis,C57BL/6 mice were fed a methionine-choline-deficient（MCD） diet for 8 *** four weeks into MCD feeding,mice were provided with plain water（control） or water containing 2 mg/mL of GABA for the subsequent 4 *** this MCD diet-induced NASH model,we found that mice receiving GABA showed more severe steatohepatitis and liver fibrosis than control *** increased liver damage was confirmed by higher levels of serum alanine transaminase（ALT） and aspartate aminotransferase（AST） compared to the control *** accordance with increased liver steatohepatitis,NASH-related and inflammatory gene expression（collagen al,tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1,TNF-α） in the liver was markedly increased in GABA-treated ***,GABA directly enhanced production of inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and TNF-α in LPS activated RAW macrophage cells and increased TIB-73 hepatocyte *** effects were abolished when GABA was treated with bicuculline,a competitive antagonist of GABA *** results suggest that oral administration of GABA may be involved in changes of the liver immune milieu and conferred detrimental effects on NASH progression.

Pin1 overexpression in colorectal cancer and its correlation with aberrant β-catenin expression

AIM： To investigate clinical significance of Pin1 and β-catenin expression in colorectal cancers and to demonstrate the relationship of their expression. METHODS： The role of Pin1 and β-catenin protein in colorectal tumorigenesis and their clinicopathologic significance were analyzed by immunohistochemistry, and correlation between Pin1 and β-catenin protein expressions was also studied in 124 patients with colorectal cancer who were surgically treated. RESULTS： Normal colonic epithelium either failed to express or showed focal and weak expression of Pin1 and β-catenin. Overexpression of Pin1 and β-catenin protein was found in 23 （18.54%） and 50 （40.3%） of 124 colorectal cancers, respectively. Overexpression of both proteins was not related to the lymph node metastasis, tumor stage and survival period after excision. Survival analysis results indicated that tumor stage was a valuable predictor of survival. Interestingly, a significant correlation was found between Pin1 and β-catenin protein expression. CONCLUSION： Overexpression of Pin1 and β-catenin may be closely related with the development and/or progression of colorectal carcinoma and further supports that Pin1 overexpression might contribute to the upregulation of β-catenin.
