Human and animal alcohol-induced hangovers are caused by adverse effects of acetaldehyde formed in vivo by the enzymatic oxidation of ethyl alcohol to acetaldehyde. This study aims to determine the effect of the combination of a bioprocessed black rice bran (BRB-F) and glutathione-enriched yeast extract (GEYE) on hangovers as tested in rats and mice. Because analysis by HPLC showed that the content of the biologically active rice bran compound γ-oryzanol as well as of the antioxidant reduced glutathione were unaffected during the preparation of tablets containing 100 mg/kg of the bran formulation, the tablets were then administered orally to rats. The results showed decreased blood concentrations of both alcohol and acetaldehyde compared to the control group. Additional behavior experiments using the Rota-rod and wire tests in mice confirmed that the food formulation relieved hangover behavior caused by alcohol. It seems that the combination of BRB-F and GEYE can effectively control hangovers in rodents caused by alcohol intake. Mechanistic aspects of the hangover and anti-hangover effects of alcohol-derived acetaldehyde are similar to browning-type reactions between the aldehyde group of glucose and proteins, the antibiotic effects of cinnamaldehyde against pathogenic bacteria, the adverse effects of the heat-induced food toxin acrylamide, and the alkali-induced formation of the unnatural amino acid lysinoalanine.

Hydrogen is receiving considerable interest as clean and high efficiency energy. During the past decades, hydrogen was mainly produced by petroleum resources（i.e. Naphtha, CH4）. However, because of the recent increasing of the oil cost and the lack of the resources, alternative technologies are required for mass production hydrogen. In the present work, we consider iron making exhausted gases as hydrogen resources because they contain much carbon monoxide and hydrogen. To increase hydrogen content in the exhausted gases, hydrogen reforming process such as a water gas shift reactor is needed. In the present work, considerations are focused on the performance analysis of the water gas shift reaction with the iron making exhausted gases in various operation conditions. And, we discuss the reactor design concepts to achieve better reactor performance.

Processes involved in regulating intracellular Mg2+ concentration （[Mg 2+ ]i） include permeability of the plasma membrane, Mg2+ transporters in the membrane, intracellular buffering by proteins and transport across organelles. Ultimately, steady-state [Mg2+]i is controlled by the first two mechanisms, although [Mg2+]i can be altered by buffering or transport by intracellular proteins and organelles, respectively. However, the pathway of Mg2+ efflux remains unclear in guinea-pig heart. Our objective was to investigate the existence of Na+-dependent Mg2+ efflux in perfused heart of guinea-pig. The rate of total magnesium efflux （[Mg]e） in high Mg 2+-loaded hearts was faster than that in low Mg2+-loaded those. The rate of [Mg]e reversibly decreased with the low extracellular Na+ concentrations （[Na+]o） in a concentration-dependent manner, blocked by the pretreatment of imipramine. Therefore, the Mg2+ efflux could be coupled with the Na+ influx in guinea-pig heart, which might involve activation of Na+ /Mg2+ exchange.

AIM: To evaluate the long-term efficacy adefovir(ADV)-based combination therapies in entecavir(ETV)-resistant chronic hepatitis B(CHB) patients. METHODS: F i fty CHB pat ient s wi t h genotypic resistance to ETV at 13 medical centers in South Korea were included for the analysis. All the patients received rescue therapy with the combination of ADV plus ETV(ADV/ETV,n = 23) or ADV plus lamivudine(LMV)(ADV/LMV,n = 27) for more than 12 mo. Patients were monitored at least every 3-4 mo during ADV-based combination therapy by clinical examination as well as biochemical and virological assessments. Hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA levels were measured by realtime PCR and logarithmically transformed for analysis. Cumulative rates of virologic response(VR; HBV DNA < 20 IU/m L) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method,and the difference was determined by a logrank test. Multivariate logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models were used to identify independent risk factors significantly associated with short-term and long-term VR,***: Baseline median HBV DNA levels were 5.53(2.81-7.63) log10 IU/m L. The most commonly observed ETV genotypic mutation sites were rt184 and rt202. Patients were treated for a median of 27(12-45) mo. Overall,cumulative VR rates at 6,12,24,and 36 mo were 26%,36%,45%,and 68%,respectively. Patients treated with the ADV/ETV combination showed higher cumulative VR rates(35%,43%,65%,and 76%,respectively) than those with the ADV/LAM combination(18%,30%,30%,and 62%,respectively; P = 0.048). In the multivariate analysis,low baseline HBV DNA levels(< 5.2 log10 IU/m L) and initial virologic response at 3 mo(IVR-3; HBV DNA < 3.3 log10 IU/m L after 3 mo) were independent predictive factors for VR. Patients with favorable predictors achieved cumulative VR rates up to 90% at 36 mo. Background: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a major cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality in the United States (US) and globally. CHB disproportionately affects Asian Americans and many other immigrant minority populations, primarily owing to the high prevalence of CHB in their countries of origin. India is a country with a medium-to-high prevalence of hepatitis B (HB) (>2%) and has over 40 million people infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV), with more than 115,000 deaths annually from HBV-related complications. Indian Americans are one of the largest immigrant populations in the US but remain underdiagnosed and poorly linked to clinical care. We, therefore, assessed the HBV prevalence and evaluated the linkage-to-care (LTC) among Indian Americans to develop strategic plans to reduce the impact of HBV in the US. Methods: Between April 2022 and January 2024, serologic screening and surveys were provided to 328 Indian American adults (age 20 - 80) in New York City. All participants were tested for a triple panel consisting of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs), and hepatitis B core IgG antibody (anti-HBc). A survey was conducted on the subjects chronically infected with HBV regarding their histories of infection. Self-administered questionnaires were employed to evaluate demographic and epidemiologic characteristics. Results: Of 328 screened and evaluated (246 males and 82 females), 10 (3.0%) were HBV-infected, 222 (67.7%) were susceptible to HBV, and 96 (29.3%) were immune. The prevalence of chronic HBV varied between the age groups: 4.6% (age 20 - 40), 3.4% (age 41 - 60), and 1.7% (age 61 - 80). Of 10 chronically infected, only two subjects had been previously diagnosed but were not engaged in care. Conclusion: HBV disproportionately affects Asian Americans, primarily owing to immigration from parts of the world where the disease is endemic.
