Inhibitory Mechanisms of Water Extract of Oplopanax elatus on Lipopolysaccharide-lnduced Inflammatory Responses in RAW 264.7 Murine Macrophage Cells

Objective:To study the anti-inflammatory action and cellular mechanism of Oplopanax ***:A hot water extract of OE(WOE)was prepared and a major constituent,syringin,was successfully *** content in WOE was found to be 214.0 p.g/g dried plant(w/w).Their anti-inflammatory activities were examined using RAW 264.7 macrophages and a mouse model of croton oil-induced ear ***:In lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-treated RAW 264.7 cells,a mouse macrophage cell line,WOE was found to significantly and strongly inhibit cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)-induced prostaglandin E2(PGE2)production[half maximal inhibitory concentration(IC50)=135.2μg/mL]and inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)-induced NO production(IC50=242.9μg/mL).In the same condition,WOE was revealed to inhibit NO production by downregulating iNOS expression,mainly by interrupting mitogen activated protein kinases(MAPKs)/activator protein-1(AP-1)*** activation of all three major MAPKs,p38 MAPK,extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK),and c-Jun N-terminal kinase,was inhibited by WOE(50-300μg/mL).On the other hand,WOE reduced PGE2 production by inhibiting COX-2 enzyme activity,but did not affect COX-2 expression *** addition,WOE inhibited the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α.In croton oil-induced ear edema in mice,oral administration of WOE(50-300 mg/kg)dose-dependently inhibited edematic ***:Water extract of OE exhibited multiple anti-inflammatory action mechanisms and may have potential for treating inflammatory disorders.

In combination with theoretical calculations,experiments were conducted to investigate the evolution behavior of nonmetallic inclusions(NMIs)during the manufacture of large-scale heat-resistant steel ingots using 9CrMoCoB heat-resistant steel and CaF_(2)–CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–B_(2)O_(3)electroslag remelting(ESR)-type slag in an 80-t industrial ESR *** main types of NMI in the consumable electrode comprised pure alumina,a multiphase oxide consisting of an Al_(2)O_(3)core and liquid CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–MnO shell,and M_(23)C_(6)carbides with an MnS *** Al_(2)O_(3)and MnS inclusions had higher precipitation temperatures than the M_(23)C_(6)-type carbide under equilibrium and nonequilibrium solidification ***,inclusions can act as nucleation sites for carbide layer *** ESR process completely removed the liquid CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–MnO oxide and MnS inclusion with a carbide shell,and only the Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions and Al_(2)O_(3)core with a carbide shell occupied the remelted *** M_(23)C_(6)-type carbides in steel were determined as Cr_(23)C_(6)based on the analysis of transmission electron microscopy *** substitution of Cr with W,Fe,or/and Mo in the Cr_(23)C_(6)lattice caused slight changes in the lattice parameter of the Cr_(23)C_(6)***,Cr_(21.34)Fe_(1.66)C_(6),(Cr_(19)W_(4)C_(6),Cr_(18.4)Mo_(4.6)C_(6),and Cr_(16)Fe_(5)Mo_(2)C_(6)can match the fraction pattern of Cr_(23)C_(6)*** Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions in the remelted ingot formed due to the reduction of CaO,SiO_(2),and MnO components in the liquid *** increased Al content in liquid steel or the higher supersaturation degree of Al_(2)O_(3)precipitation in the remelted ingot than that in the electrode can be attributed to the evaporation of CaF_(2)and the increase in CaO content in the ESR-type slag.

This paper presents an experimental study investigating factors influencing the effective width of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) column-steel beam joints of building in order to calculate its resisting *** 1/2 scaled interior SRC column-steel beam joint specimens were made with considering parameters such as beam flange width,beam depth and SRC column *** directional increasing moment was applied to the joint by acting forces to each ends of beam and the structural behavior of joint was *** previous design method suggested by Deierlein was reviewed and a modified equation was proposed from the analysis of test *** result indicated that the equation to calculate the effective width in Deierlein’s design method didn’t consider effectively the influence caused by the variation of beam depth so that a modified equation was suggested and the validation of it was confirmed in this paper.

Is there correlation between pancreatic enzyme and radiological severity in acute pancreatitis?

AIM: To investigate the correlation between the changes of pancreatic enzyme, the biochemical markers and the clinical results according to the Balthazar computer tomography (CT) grade. METHODS: Between July 2004 and July 2005, we reviewed the charts of 119 patients who were admitted to our hospital with acute pancreatitis. RESULTS: Eighty-three patients (69.7%) were male, and the mean age of the patients was 57 ± 15.7 years. The biliary pancreatitis patients had an older mean age. Forty-nine patients (41.1%) had biliary pancreatitis and forty-six (38.6%) had alcoholic pancreatitis. Group 3 patients had a longer duration of pain (2.51 ± 1.16 vs 3.17 ± 1.30 vs 6.56 ± 6.13, P < 0.001), a longer period of fasting (7.49 ± 4.65 vs 10.65 ± 5.54 vs 21.88 ± 13.81, P < 0.001) and a longer hospital stay (9.17 ± 5.34 vs 14.63 ± 8.65 vs 24.47 ± 15.52, P < 0.001) than the other groups. On the univariate analysis, the factors that affected the radiological grade were the leukocyte count at admission (P = 0.048), the hemoglobin (P = 0.016) and total bilirubin concentrations (P = 0.023), serum lipase (P = 0.009), the APACH Ⅱ scores at admission (P = 0.017), the APACH Ⅱ scores after 24 h (P = 0.031), the C-reactive protein (CRP) titer (P = 0.0001) and the follow up CRP titer (P = 0.003). But the CRP level (P = 0.001) and follow up CRP titer (P = 0.004) were only correlated with the radiological grade on multivariate analysis. According to the ROC curve, when we set the CRP cut off value at 83 mg/L, the likelihoodratio for a positive test was 3.84 and the likelihood ratio for a negative test was 0.26 in group 3. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our study suggests that the CRP with the radiological severity may be used to estimate the severity of acute pancreatitis.

Stabilizing a frequency comb to an ultra-stable optical frequency reference requires a multitude of optoelectronic peripherals that have to operate under strict ambient ***,the frequency comb-to-comb stabilization aims to synchronize a slave comb to a well-established master comb with a substantial saving in required equipment and ***,we report an utmost case of frequency comb-to-comb stabilization made through a 1.3 km free-space optical(FSO)link by coherent transfer of two separate comb lines along with a feedback suppression control of atmospheric phase *** FSO link offers a transfer stability of 1.7×10-15 at 0.1 s averaging,while transporting the master comb,s stability of 1.2×10-15 at 1.0 s over the entire spectrum of the slave *** remote comb-to-comb stabilization is intended to expedite diverse long-distance ground-to-ground or ground-to-satellite applications;as demonstrated here for broadband molecular spectroscopy over a 6THz bandwidth as well as ultra-stable microwaves generation with phase noise of-80dBc Hz-1 at 1 Hz.

Prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma expressing cytokeratin 19:Comparison with other liver cancers

AIM:To investigate whether expressing biliary phenotype predicted poor outcome after the surgical treatment in primary liver cancers. METHODS:Out of 204 patients that underwent liver resection due to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), liver specimens of 70 patients with HCC were evaluated for biliary components by cytokeratin (CK) 19 immunostain (CK19 - HCC and CK19 + HCC). CK19 positivity was defined as membranous and/or cytoplasmic expression in ≥ 5% of tumor cells with moderate or strong intensity. Patients with other primary liver cancers, such as com- bined HCC and cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC), intrahe- patic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) who received curative liver resection, were also included in the study. Clinical characteristics of CK19-HCC and CK19 + HCC patients, including survival outcome after curative liver resection, were compared with that of cHCC-CC and ICC patients. RESULTS: The overall survival (OS) rate of CK19 - HCC(n = 49) after the curative surgical treatment was 90.7%, and 80.4% at 1 and 5 years after the resection. OS rate of CK19 + HCC (n = 21) was 74.3%, 28.9% and OS rate of cHCC-CC (n = 22) was 66.7%, 32.2% at 1 and 5 years after the surgery. For ICC (n = 19), 1 and 5-year-OS rate was 50.2% and 14.3% after the cura-tive resection. The OS rates of CK19 + HCC and cHCC-CC were significantly lower than that of CK19-HCC, but higher than the OS rate of ICC (P = 0.000). There was no statistically significant difference in OS rate between CK19 + HCC and cHCC-CC. The disease free survival (DFS) rate of CK19-HCC was 72.0% and 54.5% at 1 and 3 years after the surgical treatment. DFS rate of CK19 + HCC was 53.3%, 34.3% and DFS rate of cHCC- CC was 51.5%, 39.2% at 1 and 3 years after the resection. For ICC, 1 and 3-year-DFS rate was 28.0% and 14.0% after the curative resection. DFS rate of CK19-HCC was significantly higher than that of ICC (P = 0.017), but marginally higher than DFS rate of either CK19 + HCC or cHCC-CC (P = 0.097, P = 0.089, respec-tively).

Computational approaches for fast generation of digital 3D video holograms(Invited Paper)

Several approaches for fast generation of digital holograms of a three-dimensional （3D） object have been discussed. Among them, the novel look-up table （N-LUT） method is analyzed to dramatically reduce the number of pre-calculated fringe patterns required for computation of digital holograms of a 3D object by employing a new concept of principal fringe patterns, so that problems of computational complexity and huge memory size of the conventional ray-tracing and look-up table methods have been considerably alleviated. Meanwhile, as the 3D video images have a lot of temporally or spatially redundant data in their inter- and intra-frames, computation time of the 3D video holograms could be also reduced just by removing these redundant data. Thus, a couple of computational methods for generation of 3D video holograms by combined use of the N-LUT method and data compression algorithms are also presented and discussed. Some experimental results finally reveal that by using this approach a great reduction of computation time of 3D video holograms could be achieved.

Formation of intermetallic compound at interface between rare earth elements and ferritic-martensitic steel by fuel cladding chemical interaction

The intermetallic compounds formation at interface between rare earth elements and clad material were investigated to demonstrate the effects of rare earth elements on fuel-cladding chemical interaction （FCCI） behavior. Mischmetal （70Ce-30La） and Nd were prepared as rare earth elements. Diffusion couple testing was performed on the rare earth elements and cladding （9Cr2W steel） near the operation temperature of （sodium-cooled fast reactor） SFR fuel. The performance of a diffusion barrier consisting of Zr and V metallic foil against the rare earth elements was also evaluated. Our results showed that Ce and Nd in the rare earth elements and Fe in the clad material interdiffused and reacted to form intermetallic species according to the parabolic rate law, describing the migration of the rare earth element. The diffusion of Fe limited the reaction progress such that the entire process was governed by the cubic rate law. Rare earth materials could be used as a surrogate for high burnup metallic fuels, and the performance of the barrier material was demonstrated to be effective.

Changes and development plans in the mountain villages of South Korea:Comparison of the first and second national surveys

Owing to the geographic disadvantages of mountain villages, the social, cultural, and economic conditions of mountain villagers are inferior to those of urban dwellers in South Korea. Thus, in 1995, the The government of South Korea launched a mountain village development support program to promote agriculture and forestry, balance national land development, and preserve cultural heritage. The program was effectively implemented, improving the income, population size, and living conditions of villagers in addition to setting up a system for stable project implementation. However, concerns were raised about long-term development planning, the creation and marketing of specialty brands, facility management/operation, and follow-up support. The government conducted surveys of mountain villagers in 2003 and 2014, obtaining basic data to address these issues. This study evaluates the outcomes of these two surveys, suggesting areas requiring focusedaction, concentrating on village development projects, forest resource distribution and use, demographic trends, the economy, exchange with urban areas, green tourism, and master planning. We find that despite growth in the forest labor force, forest ownership is diminishing in terms of the number and scale of holdings. Consequently, it is necessary to commercialize forest resources, establish favorable settlement conditions, and expand government support for village-run projects. In addition, systematic forest management for older tree age classes would benefit the public and provide assets for future mountain village development. Our results are expected to provide baseline information for the establishment and efficient implementation of mountain village development policy.

Comparative outcomes of the pathogen in cultured Jones tubes used in lacrimal bypass surgery according to follow up periods

AIM:To evaluate the pathogens in cultured Jones tubes used in lacrimal bypass surgery according to the postoperative periods and to obtain data for the prevention of infection of functional lacrimal stent ***:Totally 71 patients(81 eyes)who underwent the removal of Jones tubes were enrolled in *** the removed Jones tubes were cultured for bacterial and fungal identification and tested for bacterial antibiotic *** results were analyzed according to the duration of the inserted Jones tube after lacrimal bypass ***:Of the 81 eyes,bacteria were isolated from 69 eyes(85.2%)and fungi from 6 eyes(7.4%).Among 69 eyes,40.6% showed Staphylococcus aureus(***),11.6% were Pseudomonas aeruginosa(***).Gram-positive bacteria were isolated more than Gramnegative bacteria,but Gram-negative bacteria showed a higher incidence in the Jones tube implanted for over 10y(P=0.035).The antibiotic sensitivity test showed that 46.4% of *** were resistant to *** terms of antibiotics commonly used in ocular clinical practice,vancomycin was sensitive to *** and Streptococcus pneumoniae(***),amikacin responded to *** and Proteus mirabilis(***).Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole(TMP/SMX)was all sensitive to ***,*** and *** except ***:*** is the most commonly found organism in the Jones tube after lacrimal bypass surgery,and 46.4% of them are methicillin-resistant ***(MRSA),sensitive to ***,*** responded with amikacin is dominantly detected in the Jones tubes implanted for more than 10y.
