We investigated the effects of the multilayer polymer-clay nanohybrid passivation films on the stability of pentacene organic thin-film transistors （OTFTs） exposed to air and UV irradiation. Well-ordered multilayer films were deposited by the spin-assisted layer-by-layer assembly method using photocrosslinkable poly（vinyl alcohol） with the N-methyl-4（4＇-formylstyryl）pyridinium methosulfate acetal group （SbQ-PVA） and Na＋-montmorillonite in a water-based solution process. When photocrosslinked, these SbQ-PVA/clay multilayers were found to serve as excellent barriers to 02 and UV-light. Moreover, when used as passivation layers, they enhanced the stability of pen- tacene OTFT devices exposed to air and UV radiation.

Prediction of nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin combination chemotherapy in gastric cancer patients

AIM:To evaluate the treatment options for nephrotoxicity due to cisplatin combination ***:We retrospectively reviewed patients who had received cisplatin combination chemotherapy for gastric cancer between January 2002 and December *** investigated patients who had shown acute renal failure(ARF),and examined their clinical characteristics,laboratory data,use of preventive measures,treatment cycles,the amount of cisplatin administered,recovery period,subsequent treatments,and renal status between the recovered and unrecovered ***:Forty-one of the 552 patients had serum creatinine(SCR)levels greater than 1.5 mg/*** found that pre-ARF SCR,ARF SCR,and ARF glomerular filtration rates were significantly associated with renal status postARF between the two groups(P=0.008,0.026,0.026,respectively).On the receiver operating characteristic curve of these values,a 1.75 mg/dL ARF SCR value had 87.5%sensitivity and 84.8%specificity(P=0.011).CONCLUSION:Cessation or reduction of chemotherapy should be considered for patients who have an elevation of SCR levels during cisplatin combination chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND： Thyroid hormones modulate proliferation of astrocytes and microglia depending on maturation stage and localization. Studies have demonstrated that triiodothyronine treatment or thyroidectomy during developmental stages results in morphological alterations and changes in the number of astrocytes and microglia. Little is known about the effects of hypothyroidism on astrocytes and microglia in adults. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the effects of hypothyroidism on morphology and number of astrocytes and microglia in the adult rat hippocampus. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, neuroendocrinological, animal study was performed at the College of Medicine, Hallym University, South Korea between May 2008 and April 2009. MATERIALS： Methimazole, rabbit anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） antiserum, and rabbit anti-lba-1 antiserum were purchased from Sigma, USA. Rabbit anti-GFAP polyclonal antibody was provided by Chemicon, USA. Rabbit anti-lba-1 polyclonal antibody was purchased from Wako, Japan. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP-biotin nick-end-labeling （TUNEL） kit was provided by Roche Molecular Biochemicals, Mannheim, Germany. METHODS： Hypothyroidism was induced in Wistar rats via methimazole administration （0.025%） in drinking water for 5 weeks, starting at 6 months of age. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Following methimazole treatment, hippocampai neuronal death was determined using TUNEL staining. The morphology and number of GFAP and lba-1 immunoreactive cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. Hippocampal GFAP and lba-1 protein levels were detected by Western blot analysis. Serum-free triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels were quantified. RESULTS： TUNEL-positive neurons were not observed in the hippocampus of euthyroid and hypothyroid rats. AIM: To study the anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous extract from Dichroafebrifuga root (AEDF) for suppression in the process of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis in the rat liver. METHODS: The inhibitory effect of AEDF on the alteration of inflammatory proteins was investigated by Western blot and immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: Western blot analysis showed that the level of nuclear factor (NF)-κBp65 was markedly up-regulated and (Ⅰ)κBα was down-regulated by LPS (8 mg/kg) challenge. However, AEDF 100 mg/kg inhibited induction of NF-κBp65 and degradation of Ⅰ-κBα in the liver of LPS-challenged rats. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that while the expression of the NF-κBp65, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS) tended to increase, that of Ⅰ-κBα was decreased in the hepatocytes of rats challenged with LPS. A slight decline of NF-κBp65, TNF-α, and iNOS, but an increase of Ⅰ-κBα were observed in the hepatocytes of the rats pretreated with AEDF. CONCLUSION: AEDF may act as a therapeutic agent for inflammatory disease through a regulation of inflammation-related proteins.

AIM: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of Gamichunggantang (GCT) on hyperlipidemia through high cholesterol diet model. GCT is an Oriental herbal medication, which has been used for-the treatment of fatty liver, hyperlipidemia or alcoholic liver disease in Daejeon University Oriental Hospital, Korea since 1999. METHODS: Rats were fed with high cholesterol diet for 4 weeks and GCT was administrated for 2 weeks from 2 weeks later in expermental days. The levels of serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride were analyzed every week. Absolute and relative liver weight to body, and histophathological changes were determined at last day. And, lipid metabolism-related gene expressions (ACAT and DGAT) in liver tissue were analyzed by using RT-PCR. RESULTS:In GCT group, TG levels were reduced at 3 and 4 weeks after GCT administration (39.4%, Pmulation was decreased in histological finding. ACAT gene expression was suppressed compared with hyperlipidemia-induced group but not DGAT. CONCLUSION: GCT possesses preventive or therapeutic effects on diet-induced hypedipidemia by inhibiting the intestinal absorption and storage of exogenous and endogenous cholesterol.

BACKGROUND Untreated neonatal cholestasis can progress to liver cirrhosis and end stage liver disease in infancy due to prolonged hepatocyte and biliary tree injury and may require liver ***,non-invasive evaluation of hepatic fibrosis is important in infants with *** To investigate the usefulness of periportal thickening(PT)measured on liver magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)for the assessment of hepatic fibrosis in infants with cholestasis including biliary atresia(BA).METHODS This retrospective study included infants less than 6 mo who underwent liver MRI and biopsy for the evaluation of infantile *** and spleen size were measured on *** assessment was based on aspartate transaminase to platelet ratio index(APRI).The grade of histopathologic fibrosis was assessed by the METAVIR grading *** and diagnostic performance of PT,normalized spleen size ratio(SR,using the upper normal size limit),and APRI for diagnosing hepatic fibrosis were obtained by receiveroperating characteristic(ROC)curve *** A total of 155 patients were included,110 of which were diagnosed with *** age at the time of MRI was 57.6±34.4 *** were positive correlations between fibrosis grade and PT and SR,even after adjusting age(all,P<0.001).For the diagnosis of significant fibrosis(METAVIR grade F2-F4),the area under the ROC curve was 0.899(95%CI:0.840–0.941)for PT(cutoff,4.2 mm),which was higher than 0.741(95%CI:0.664–0.808)for SR and 0.712(95%CI:0.634–0.782)for APRI(both,P<0.001).For the diagnosis of cirrhosis(F4),the area under the ROC curve was the highest with SR as 0.790(95%CI:0.718–0.852).CONCLUSION Liver MRI findings of PT and SR are useful to assess clinically significant hepatic fibrosis(F2 and higher)in infants with cholestasis including BA.

BACKGROUND Breast cancer in young women has been shown to have an aggressive behavior and poor *** To evaluate the outcomes of young hormone receptor(HR)-positive patients with breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC),and the oncologic efficacy of gonadotropin-releasing hormone(GnRH)*** This retrospective study involved a prospectively enrolled *** included patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer who were treated with NAC followed by curative surgery at the Samsung Medical Center and Samsung Changwon Hospital between January 2006 and December *** patients with HR-positive and human epidermal grow factor 2(HER2)-negative breast cancer,we analyzed the characteristics and oncology outcomes between the patients equal to or younger than 35 years and the patients older than 35 *** Among 431 patients with NAC and HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer,78 were 35 years old or younger,and 353 patients were older than 35 *** median follow-up was 71.0 *** was no statistically significant difference in disease free survival(DFS,P=0.565)and overall survival(P=0.820)between the patients equal to or younger than 35 years and the patients older than 35 *** two groups differed in that the GnRH agonist was used more frequently in the group of patients equal to or younger than 35 years than in the other group(52.4%vs 11.2%,P<0.001).Interestingly,for the DFS according to the GnRH agonist in the group of patients equal to or younger than 35 years,patients treated with the GnRH agonist had better DFS(P=0.037).CONCLUSION Administration of GnRH agonists might improve the DFS rate of HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer in the equal to or younger than 35 years group of patients with NAC.

Biochemical outcomes after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy in patients with follow-up more than 5-years

In this study, we assessed biochemical outcomes after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy （RARP）. Between July 2005 and November 2007, one hundred and seventy-six consecutive patients treated by RARP without neoadjuvant treatment were included in this study. All procedures were performed by a single surgeon and the median follow-up period was 60 months （interquartile range （IQR）： 59-69）. The median prostate specific antigen was 7.50 ng ml-1 （IQR： 5.14-11.45） and 39.2% of the patients were classified as intermediate risk and 15.3% were classified as high risk; on final pathological examination, 35.2% of the patients had non-organ confined disease and 37.5% and 14.2% had Gleason scores of 7 and 8-10, respectively. The biochemical recurrence （BCR）-free survival rates at 3 and 5 years were 85.6% and 81.2%, respectively. The 5-year BCR-free survival rates stratified by pathologic Gleason scores were 93.1% in Gleason scores of 6 or less, 74.5% in a Gleason score of 7, and 58.1% in Gleason scores of 8 or greater, respectively （P〈0.001）. When stratified by pathologic stage, the BCR-free survival rates were 89.8% in pT2 patients, 66.2% in pT3a patients, and 39.3% in pT3b patients at 5 years following RARP, respectively （P〈0.001）. Preoperative prostate-specific antigen （PSA）, pathologic stage, postoperative Gleason score and surgical margin status were independently associated with BCR in multivariate analysis. In this study, we report biochemical outcomes after RARP with the longest follow-up periods to date in Asian men. We found that robotic surgery provided satisfactory biochemical outcomes, and that RARP is a safe and effective procedure in terms of oncologic outcomes.

Sorption enhanced catalytic CF4 hydrolysis with a three-stage catalyst-adsorbent reactor

In this study, we developed a three-stage catalyst-adsorbent reactor for the catalytic hydrolysis of CF4. Each stage is composed of a catalyst bed followed by an adsorbent bed using Ca（OH）2 to remove HF. The three stages are connected in series to enhance the hydrolysis of CF4 and eliminate a scrubber to dissolve HF in water at the same time. With a 10 wt-% Ce/AlaO3 catalyst prepared by the incipient wetness method using boehmite and a granular calcium hydroxide as an adsorbent, the CF4 conversion in our proposed reactor was 7%-23% higher than that in a conventional single-bed catalytic reactor in the temperature range of 923-1023 K. In addition, experimental and numerical simulation （Aspen HYSYS） results showed a reasonable trend of increased CF4 conversion with the adsorbent added and these results can be used as a useful design guideline for our newly proposed multistage reactor system.
