Glucose metabolism and neurogenesis in the gerbil hippocampus after transient forebrain ischemia

Recent evidence exists that glucose transporter 3（GLUT3） plays an important role in the energy metabolism in the *** previous studies have been conducted using focal or hypoxic ischemia models and have focused on changes in GLUT3 expression based on protein and m RNA levels rather than tissue *** the present study,we observed change in GLUT3 immunoreactivity in the adult gerbil hippocampus at various time points after 5 minutes of transient forebrain *** the sham-operated group,GLUT3 immunoreactivity in the hippocampal CA1 region was weak,in the pyramidal cells of the CA1 region increased in a time-dependent fashion 24 hours after ischemia,and in the hippocampal CA1 region decreased significantly between 2 and 5 days after ischemia,with high level of GLUT3 immunoreactivity observed in the CA1 region 10 days after *** a double immunofluorescence study using GLUT3 and glial-fibrillary acidic protein（GFAP）,we observed strong GLUT3 immunoreactivity in the ***3 immunoreactivity increased after ischemia and peaked 7 days in the dentate gyrus after ischemia/*** a double immunofluorescence study using GLUT3 and doublecortin（DCX）,we observed low level of GLUT3 immunoreactivity in the differentiated neuroblasts of the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus after ***3 immunoreactivity in the sham-operated group was mainly detected in the subgranular zone of the dentate *** results suggest that the increase in GLUT3 immunoreactivity may be a compensatory mechanism to modulate glucose level in the hippocampal CA1 region and to promote adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus.

Gouty tenosynovitis with compartment syndrome in the hand: A case report

BACKGROUND Gout is a common type of inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joints and surrounding *** typically appears with abrupt and intense pain,redness,and swelling in the affected *** frequently targets the lower extremities,such as the big ***,rarely,gout can manifest in atypical locations,including the hands,leading to an uncommon presentation known as gouty ***,it can result in significant morbidity owing to the potential for severe complications,such as myonecrosis and compartment *** SUMMARY An 82-year-old male patient with a history of hypertension,cerebral infarction,Parkinson's disease,and recurrent gout attacks sought medical attention because of progressive pain and swelling in the right *** findings revealed forearm swelling,raising concerns of possible tenosynovitis,bursitis,septic arthritis,and compartment syndrome.A fasciotomy was performed to decompress the patient’s hands and *** procedure revealed diffuse tenosynovitis,tophi with a pus-like discharge surrounding the carpal tunnel,and involvement of the flexor and extensor tendon ***,microbiological investigations,including Gram staining,acid-fast bacilli,tuberculosis,and nontuberculous mycobacteria,yielded negative *** patient was ultimately diagnosed with a severe gouty attack with compartment syndrome and *** arthritis and infectious flexor tenosynovitis were ruled *** debridement and inflammation control were initiated,followed by staged closure with a skin *** Septic-like complications can occur in the absence of infection in severe gout attacks with pus-like discharges due to compartment syndrome and *** can be used to differentiate between gouty attacks,septic arthritis,and infectious *** of the flexor and extensor muscles,as in this case,is *** study contributes to the literature

The solid-solution reaction between an alkali cation and an active host material is known as a singlephase redox mechanism,and it is typically accompanied by a continuous voltage *** is distinct from the typical alkali cation intercalation reaction at an equivalent site of the active host material,which exhibits a voltage ***,we report an unusual solid-solution potassium-ion intercalation mechanism with a low-voltage plateau capacity on multilayered turbostratic graphene nanosheets(T-GNSs).Despite the disordered graphitic structure with a broad range of d-spacings(3.65–4.18À),the T-GNSs showed a reversible plateau capacity of~200 m A h g^(-1),which is higher than that of a well-ordered graphite nanoplate(~120 m A h g^(-1)).In addition,a sloping capacity of~220 m A h g^(-1)was delivered with the plateau capacity,and higher rate capabilities,better reversibility,and a more stable cycling performance were confirmed on the turbostratic ***-principles calculations suggest that the multitudinous lattice domains of the T-GNSs contain diverse intercalation sites with strong binding energies,which could be the origin of the high-performance solid-solution potassium-ion intercalation behavior when the turbostratic graphene stacks have a d-spacing smaller than that of equilibrium potassium–graphite intercalation compounds(5.35À).

Successful reconstruction of an ankle defect with free tissue transfer in a hemophilia A patient with repetitive hemoarthrosis:A case report

BACKGROUND Hemophilia, an uncommon yet consequential hereditary bleeding disorder, manifests as two clinically indistinguishable forms that hinder the normal functioning of the coagulation cascade. This impairment renders individuals more susceptible to excessive bleeding during significant surgical interventions. Moreover, individuals with severe hemophilia frequently encounter recurring hemarthrosis, resulting in progressive joint destruction and, subsequently, the need for hip and knee replacement *** SUMMARY The patient was a 53-year-old man with hemophilia A as the underlying disease and had self-injected factor Ⅷ twice weekly for several decades. He had undergone ankle fusion surgery for recurrent hemarthrosis at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery 1 mo prior and was referred to our department because of skin necrosis after a hematoma at the surgical site. An anterolateral thigh perforator free flap was created after three cycles of factor Ⅷ administration in addition to the concomitant administration of tranexamic acid(TXA)(Transamin 250 mg cap, 1 cap tid, q8h). After the operation, from postoperative days(PODs) 1-5, the factor Ⅷ dose and interval were maintained, and q12h administration was tapered to q24h administration after POD 6. Because the patient’s flap was stable 12 d after the operation, factor Ⅷ administration was tapered to twice a week. At 6 mo follow-up, the patient recovered well without any *** To the best of our knowledge, there are very few reports of successful free flaps in patients with hemophilia, and none have been reported in patients with hemophilia A. Moreover, there are several reports on the efficacy of TXA in free flaps in general patients;however, there are no case reports of combining factor Ⅷ and TXA in patients with hemophilia. Therefore, we report this case to contribute to future academic research.

Comparative analyses of the venom components in the salivary gland transcriptomes and saliva proteomes of some heteropteran insects

Salivary gland-specific transcriptomes of nine heteropteran insects with distinct feeding strategies (predaceous, hematophagous, and phytophagous) were analyzed and annotated to compare and identify the venom components as well as their expression profiles. The transcriptional abundance of venom genes was verified via quantitative real-time PCR. Hierarchical clustering of 30 representative differentially expressed venom genes from the nine heteropteran species revealed unique groups of salivary gland-specific genes depending on their feeding strategy. The commonly transcribed genes included a paralytic neurotoxin (arginine kinase), digestive enzymes (cathepsin and serine protease), an anti-inflammatory protein (cystatin), hexamerin, and an odorant binding protein. Both predaceous and hematophagous (bed bug) heteropteran species showed relatively higher transcription levels of genes encoding proteins involved in proteolysis and cytolysis, whereas phytophagous heteropterans exhibited little or no expression of these genes, but had a high expression of vitellogenin, a multifunctional allergen. Saliva proteomes from four representative species were also analyzed. All venom proteins identified via saliva proteome analysis were annotated using salivary gland transcriptome data. The proteomic expression profiles of venom proteins were in good agreement with the salivary gland-specific transcriptomic profiles. Our results indicate that profiling of the salivary gland transcriptome provides important information on the composition and evolutionary features of venoms depending on their feeding strategy.

The role of emergency incident type in identifying first responders' health exposure risks

Entacapone,a catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitor,can strengthen the therapeutic effects of levodopa on the treatment of Parkinson’s ***,few studies are reported on whether entacapone can affect hippocampal neurogenesis in *** investigate the effects of entacapone,a modulator of dopamine,on proliferating cells and immature neurons in the mouse hippocampal dentate gyrus,60 mice(7 weeks old)were randomly divided into a vehicle-treated group and the groups treated with 10,50,or 200 mg/kg *** results showed that 50 and 200 mg/kg entacapone increased the exploration time for novel object *** staining results revealed that after entacapone treatment,the numbers of Ki67-positive proliferating cells,doublecortin-positive immature neurons,and phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein(pCREB)-positive cells were significantly *** blot analysis results revealed that treatment with tyrosine kinase receptor B(TrkB)receptor antagonist significantly decreased the exploration time for novel object recognition and inhibited the expression of phosphorylated TrkB and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).Entacapone treatment antagonized the effects of TrkB receptor *** results suggest that entacapone treatment promoted hippocampal neurogenesis and improved memory function through activating the BDNF-TrkB-pCREB *** study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Seoul National University(approval ***-130730-1)on February 24,2014.

Optic perineuritis as an initial presentation of ocular toxoplasmosis:a case report

Dear Editor,Ocular toxoplasmosis,caused by Toxoplasma gondii infection,is one of the most common causes of posterior uveitis worldwide[1].It typically manifests as white focal retinitis with overlying vitreous inflammation that results in a chorioretinal scar and associated scotoma[2].However,the diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis can be challenging when it presents as an isolated papillitis without other typical signs of retinochoroiditis or vitritis[2].Although optic nerve involvement in ocular toxoplasmosis was present in 5.3%of cases,isolated papillitis was extremely rare(3 eyes out of 926 patients)and was only considered a presumed diagnosis in such cases given the presence of old toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis lesions[3].Few reports have described optic nerve involvement preceding toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis,while perineuritis,an uncommon form of orbital inflammatory disease involving the optic nerve sheath,has not been reported at all[4-5].Herein,we describe a case of ocular toxoplasmosis that initially presented with optic perineuritis followed by typical retinochoroidal *** our knowledge,this is the first case report of ocular toxoplasmosis with perineuritis in an immunocompetent individual.

Intra-arterial lipo-prostaglandin E1 infusion for arterial spasm in liver transplantation:A case report

BACKGROUND Hepatic artery obstruction is a critical consideration in graft outcomes after living donor liver *** report a case of diffuse arterial vasospasm that developed immediately after anastomosis and was managed with an intra-arterial infusion of lipo-prostaglandin E1(PGE1).CASE SUMMARY A 57-year-old male with hepatitis B virus-related liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma underwent ABO-incompatible living donor liver *** grafted hepatic artery was first anastomosed to the recipient’s right hepatic artery ***,the arterial pulse immediately *** a new anastomosis was performed using the right gastroepiploic artery,the patient’s arterial pulse rate remained *** attempted angiographic intervention immediately after the operation;it showed diffuse arterial vasospasms like‘beads on a string’.We attempted continuous infusion of lipo-PGE1 overnight via an intra-arterial *** next day,arterial flow improved without any spasms or *** patient had no additional arterial complications or related sequelae at the time of writing,1-year post-liver *** Angiographic evaluation is helpful in cases of repetitive arterial obstruction,and intra-arterial infusion of lipo-PGE1 may be effective in treating diffuse arterial spasms.
