Sessile plants have developed a very delicate system to sense diverse kinds of endogenous developmental cues and exogenous environmental stimuli by using a simple Ca^2＋ ion. Calmodulin （CAM） is the predominant Ca^2＋ sensor and plays a crucial role in decoding the Ca^2＋ signatures into proper cellular responses in various cellular compartments in eukaryotes. A growing body of evidence points to the importance of Ca^2＋ and CaM in the regulation of the transcriptional process during plant responses to endogenous and exogenous stimuli. Here, we review recent progress in the identification of transcriptional regulators modulated by Ca^2＋ and CaM and in the assessment of their functional significance during plant signal transduction in response to biotic and abiotic stresses and developmental cues.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely harmed every aspect of our daily lives,resulting in a slew of social ***,it is critical to accurately assess the current state of community functionality and resilience under this pandemic for successful *** this end,various types of social sensing tools,such as tweeting and publicly released news,have been employed to understand individuals’and communities’thoughts,behaviors,and attitudes during the COVID-19 ***,some portions of the released news are fake and can easily mislead the community to respond improperly to disasters like *** paper aims to assess the correlation between various news and tweets collected during the COVID-19 pandemic on community functionality and *** use fact-checking organizations to classify news as real,mixed,or fake,and machine learning algorithms to classify tweets as real or fake to measure and compare community resilience(CR).Based on the news articles and tweets collected,we quantify CR based on two key factors,community wellbeing and resource distribution,where resource distribution is assessed by the level of economic resilience and community *** on the estimates of these two factors,we quantify CR from both news articles and tweets and analyze the extent to which CR measured from the news articles can reflect the actual state of CR measured from *** improve the operationalization and sociological significance of this work,we use dimension reduction techniques to integrate the dimensions.

The effects of the combination of exercise and TRT on symptoms of late-onset hypogonadism （LOH） and the durability of response after cessation of TRT were investigated. A total of fifty patients with erectile dysfunction （ED） who had a sedentary lifestyle and low serum total testosterone （T） levels were enrolled and followed for 20 weeks. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; all of them received T gel for 12 weeks and it was discontinued for 8 weeks. Patients assigned to Group II were offered a supervised exercise program for 20 weeks. Measurement of serological testing was performed and self-assessment questionnaires and Global Assessment Question （GAQ） were asked. Baseline characteristics and the initial symptom scores showed no significant difference between the two groups. Serum total T levels and the symptom scores were increased at 12 weeks in both groups, and Group II showed better results with statistical significance. There was a decrease in T levels and worsening of symptom scores at week 20 compared to week 12 in both groups, and Group II showed better results with statistical significance. On the GAQ, Group II showed higher ratio of ＂yes＂ at week 12 and the same tendency was sustained at week 20 with significant difference between two groups. The combination of exercise and TRT showed significant improvements in serum T levels and LOH symptoms compared to TRT alone. In addition, these improvements were maintained in the combination group with continuous exercise, even after cessation of TRT.

The tumor suppressor p63 is one of p53 family members and plays a vital role as a regulator of neuronal apoptosis in the development of the nervous system. However, the role of p63 in mature neuronal death has not been addressed yet. In this study, we first compared ischemia-induced effects on p63 expression in the hippocampal regions （CA1-3） between the young and adult gerbils subjected to 5 minutes of transient global cerebral ischemia. Neuronal death in the hippocampal CA1 region of young gerbils was significantly slow compared with that in the adult gerbils after transient global cerebral ischemia, p63 immunoreactivity in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in the sham-operated young group was significantly low compared with that in the sham-operated adult group, p63 immunoreactivity was apparently changed in ischemic hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in both ischemia-operated young and adult groups. In the ischemia-operated adult groups, p63 immunoreactivity in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons was significantly decreased at 4 days post-ischemia; however, p63 immunoreactivity in the ischemia-operated young group was significantly higher than that in the ischemia-operated adult group. At 7 days post-ischemia, p63 immunoreactivity was decreased in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in both ischemia-operated young and adult groups. Change patterns of p63 level in the hippocampal CA1 region of adult and young gerbils after ischemic damage were similar to those observed in the immunohistochemical results. These findings indicate that higher and longer-term expression of p63 in the hippocampal CA1 region of the young gerbils after ischemia/reperfusion may be related to more delayed neuronal death compared to that in the adults.

In this study, we tried to verify the neuroprotective effect of Chrysanthemum indicum Linne（CIL） extract, which has been used as a botanical drug in East Asia, against ischemic damage and to explore the underlying mechanism involving the anti-inflammatory approach. A gerbil was given CIL extract for 7 consecutive days followed by bilateral carotid artery occlusion to make a cerebral ischemia/reperfusion model. Then, we found that CIL extracts protected pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal CA1 region（CA1） from ischemic damage using neuronal nucleus immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence. Accordingly, interleukin-13 immunoreactivities in the CA1 pyramidal neurons of CIL-pretreated animals were maintained or increased after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion. These findings indicate that the pre-treatment of CIL can attenuate neuronal damage/death in the brain after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion via an anti-inflammatory approach.

Actinomycosis is an uncommon chronic infectious disease. Common sites of involvement include the cervicofacial, thoracic and abdominopelvic regions. In abdominopelvic actinomycosis, the ileocecal region, including the appendix, is the most commonly involved site. In some reports, limited appendiceal actinomycosis has revealed a thickened appendiceal wall with peri-appendiceal inflammation as acute appendicitis or perforated appendicitis. We experienced pathologically confirmed intraluminal limited appendiceal actinomycosis without peri-appendiceal infiltration. Here, we report the computed tomography and ultrasound findings.

Background:cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure to treat symptomatic gallstones;however,the long-term outcomes after cholecystectomy are ***,we aimed to investigate whether incident metabolic syndrome(MetS)is associated with cholecystectomy through a large,population-based,longitudinal ***:Subjects aged≥20 years who underwent cholecystectomy from 2010 to 2014(n=76,485)and controls(n=76,485),matched for age and sex,were identified from the Korean National Health Insurance *** proportional hazards analyses were performed to evaluate the association between cases and incident MetS,and hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals(CIs)were ***:A total of 152,970 patients were *** age was 52.47±12.76 years,and 50.65% of participants were *** the follow-up period,there were 38,979(25.48%)newly diagnosed MetS cases in the study *** risk of MetS in the cholecystectomy group was approximately 20% higher than that in the control group[adjusted odds ratio(OR),1.20;95%CI:1.17-1.23].In the fully adjusted models,the corresponding ORs for new-onset high waist circumference(WC),low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)levels,high triglycerides(TG)levels,high blood pressure(BP),and high blood glucose levels were 1.16(1.13-1.19),1.19(1.16-1.22),1.25(1.22-1.28),1.27(1.23-1.31),and 1.21(1.18-1.24),*** was an independent risk factor of incident MetS,after adjusting for potential confounding *** the subgroup analyses,the cholecystectomy group had a higher risk of MetS than the control group in subjects without hypertension or dyslipidemia,***:In this large,population-based study,cholecystectomy was associated with an increased risk of developing MetS,independent of other confounding ***,careful monitoring of metabolic variables and long-term follow-up are required to evaluate MetS risk after cholecystectomy.

Beta-nerve growth factor(β-NGF) is known to be a major leading cause of neuronal plasticity. To identify the possible action mechanisms of β-NGF gene therapy for sciatic nerve recovery, experimental dogs were randomly divided into control, pyridoxine, and pyridoxine + β-NGF groups. We observed chronological changes of morphology in the dorsal root ganglia in response to pyridoxine toxicity based on cresyl violet staining. The number of large neurons positive for cresyl violet was dramatically decreased after pyridoxine intoxication for 7 days in the dorsal root ganglia and the neuron number was gradually increased after pyridoxine withdrawal. In addition, we also investigated the effects of β-NGF gene therapy on neuronal plasticity in pyridoxine-induced neuropathic dogs. To accomplish this, tyrosine kinase receptor A(TrkA), βIII-tubulin and doublecortin(DCX) immunohistochemical staining was performed at 3 days after the last pyridoxine treatment. TrkA-immunoreactive neurons were dramatically decreased in the pyridoxine group compared to the control group, but strong TrkA immunoreactivity was observed in the small-sized dorsal root ganglia in this group. TrkA immunoreactivity in the dorsal root ganglia was similar between β-NGF and control groups. The numbers of βIII-tubulin-and DCX-immunoreactive cells decreased significantly in the pyridoxine group compared to the control group. However, the reduction of βIII-tubulin-and DCX-immunoreactive cells in the dorsal root ganglia in the β-NGF group was significantly ameliorated than that in the pyridoxine group. These results indicate that β-NGF gene therapy is a powerful treatment of pyridoxine-induced neuropathic damage by increasing the TrkA and DCX levels in the dorsal root ganglia. The experimental protocol was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(IACUC) of Seoul National University, South Korea(approval No. SNU-060623-1, SNU-091009-1) on June 23, 2006 and October 9, 2009, respectively.

Research on applying a supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle （S-CO2） to concentrating solar power （CSP） instead of a steam Rankine cycle or an air Brayton cycle has been recently conducted. An S-CO2 system is suitable for CSP owing to its compactness, higher efficiency, and dry-cooling capability. At the Korea Institute of Energy Research （KIER）, to implement an S-CO2 system, a 10 kWe class test loop with a turbine- alternator-compressor （TAC） using gas foil bearings was developed. A basic sub-kWe class test loop with a high- speed radial type turbo-generator and a test loop with a capability of tens of kWe with an axial type turbo- generator were then developed. To solve the technical bottleneck of S-CO2 turbomachinery, a partial admission nozzle and oil-lubrication bearings were used in the turbo- generators. To experience the closed-power cycle and develop an operational strategy of S-CO2 operated at high pressure, an organic Rankine cycle （ORC） operating test using a refrigerant as the working fluid was conducted owing to its operational capability at relatively low- pressure conditions of approximately 30 to 40 bar. By operating the sub-kWe class test loop using R134a as the working fluid instead of CO2, an average turbine power of 400 W was obtained.
