Effect of angiotensin Ⅱ type 1 receptor blocker and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor on the intraocular growth factors and their receptors in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

AIM： To investigate the effect of angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker （ARB） and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor （ACEI） on intraocular growth factors and their receptors in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. METHODS： Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups： control, diabetes mellitus （DM）, candesartan- treated DM, and enalapril-treated DM （each group, n---10）. After the induction of DM by streptozotocin, candesartan [ARB, 5 mg/（kg · d）] and enalapril [ACEI, 10 mg/（kg · d）] were administered to rats orally for 4Wko Vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） and angiotensin II （Ang II） concentrations in the vitreous were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and VEGF receptor 2 and angiotensin II type 1 receptor （ATIR） levels were assessed at week 4 by Western blotting. RESULTS： Vitreous Ang II levels were significantly higher in the DM group and candesartan-treated DM group than in the control （P=0.04 and 0.005, respectively）. Vitreous ATIR increased significantly in DM compared to the other three groups （P〈0.007）. Candesartan-treated DM rats showed higher vitreal ATIR concentration than the enalapril-treated DM group and control （P〈0.001 and P=0.005, respectively）. No difference in vitreous Ang II and ATIR concentration was found between the enalapril- treated DM group and control. VEGF and its receptor were below the minimum detection limit in all 4 groups. CONCLUSION： Increased Ang II and ATIR in the hyperglycemic state indicate activated the intraocular renin-angiotensin system, which is inhibited more effectively by systemic ACEI than systemic ARB.

Background Community water fluoridation is an effective public health strategy for preventing dental caries,*** exist about potential health *** study explores associations between tap water fluoride levels and pediatric disease burden,as well as neurodevelopmental outcomes at 6 years of *** This nationwide population-based cohort study included children born in Korean cities with and without tap water fluoridation projects,between 2006 and 2012,aiming for a fluoride concentration of 0.8±0.2 mg/L in treated tap *** from the National Health Insurance Service were used,spanning from birth to *** relationship between exposure to fluoridated tap water and incidence of 16 childhood diseases that were previously identified as potentially linked to fluoride exposure were ***,we evaluated the neurodevelopmental outcomes across various domains,including gross motor,fine motor,cognition,language,social skills,and self-help *** assessments were performed using data from a comprehensive national health screening program for children aged six *** A fluoride-unexposed group included 22,881 children,whereas a fluoride-exposed group comprised 29,991 children(52%males).Children in the fluoride-exposed group had a decreased risk of dental caries and bone fractures[hazard ratio(95%confidence interval,CI),0.76(0.63–0.93)and 0.89(0.82–0.93),respectively]and increased risk of hepatic failures[1.85,(1.14–2.98)]compared to those in the unexposed ***,the risk ratio of abnormal neurodevelopmental screening outcomes increased by 9%,but this was statistically uncertain(95%CI,0.95–1.26).Conclusions Fluoridated tap water was associated with an increased risk of hepatic failure but a decreased risk of bone fractures in *** association between fluoridated tap water and neurodevelopmental screening outcomes at 6 years remains unclear,highlighting the need for further studies to clarify this associ

Comparison of postoperative optical quality according to the degree of decentering of V4c implantable collamer lens

Clinical implications of fatty pancreas:Correlations between fatty pancreas and metabolic syndrome

AIM:To investigate the clinical implications of lipid deposition in the pancreas(fatty pancreas). METHODS:The subjects of this study were 293 patients who had undergone abdominal computed tomography(CT)and *** pancreas was diagnosed by sonographic findings and subdivided into mild,moderate,and severe fatty pancreas groups comparing to the retroperitoneal fat echogenicity. RESULTS:Fatty pancreas was associated with higher levels for visceral fat,waist circumference,aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alanine aminotransferase (ALT),total cholesterol,triglyceride,high density lipoprotein,free fatty acid,γ-GTP,insulin,and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)than the control group(P<0.05).HOMAIR,visceral fat,triglyceride,and ALT also tended to increase with the degree of fat deposition in the pancreas on *** a multivariate logistic regression analysis,HOMA-IR,visceral fat,and ALT level were independently related to fatty pancreas after adjustment for age,body mass index,and lipid *** incidence of metabolic syndrome in the fatty pancreas group was significantly higher than in the control group,and the numbers of metabolic syndrome parameters were significantly higher in the fatty pancreas group(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Sonographic fatty pancrease showed higher insulin resistance,visceral fat area,triglyceride, and ALT levels than normal *** pancreas also showed a strong correlation with metabolic syndrome.

Long-term radiofrequency electromagnetic fields exposure attenuates cognitive dysfunction in 5×FAD mice by regulating microglial function

Effects of Flower Buds Extract of Tussilago farfara on Focal Cerebral Ischemia in Rats and Inflammatory Response in BV2 Microglia

Objective： To investigate the effects of the flower buds extract of Tussilago farfara Linné（Farfarae Flos; FF） on focal cerebral ischemia through regulation of inflammatory responses in activated microglia. Methods： Brain ischemia was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion（t MCAO） for 90 min and reperfusion for 24 h. Twenty rats were randomly divided into 4 groups（n=5 per group）： normal, t MCAO-induced ischemic control, t MCAO plus FF extract 300 mg/kg-treated, and t MCAO plus MK-801 1 mg/kg-treated as reference drug. FF extract（300 mg/kg, p.o.） or MK-801（1 mg/kg, i.p.） was administered after reperfusion. Brain infarction was measured by 2,3,5,-triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining. Neuronal damage was observed by haematoxylin eosin, Nissl staining and immunohistochemistry using anti-neuronal nuclei（Neu N）, anti-glial fibril ary acidic protein（GFAP）, and antiCD11 b/c（OX42） antibodies in ischemic brain. The expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase（i NOS）, tumor necrosis factor（TNF-α）, and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 a（HIF-1α） were determined by Western blot. BV2 microglial cel s were treated with FF extract or its main bioactive compound, tussilagone with or without lipopolysaccharide（LPS）. Nitric oxide（NO） production was measured in culture medium by Griess assay. The expressions of i NOS, COX-2 and pro-inflammatory cytokines mRNA were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The expression of i NOS, and COX-2 proteins, the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, JNK, and p38 MAPK and the nuclear expression of NF-κB p65 in BV2 cells were determined by Western blot. Results： FF extract significantly decreased brain infarctions in ischemic rats（P〈0.01）. The neuronal death and the microglia/astrocytes activation in ischemic brains were inhibited by FF extract. What is the real practice of exercise echocardiographic testing in asymptomatic patients with severe aortic stenosis？

Background Although exercise testing has been suggested to help predict clinical outcome, limited data are available to guide how exercise Doppler echocardiography （ECG） can be used clinically in asymptomatic patients with aortic stenosis （AS）. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical value of exercise echocardiographic testing in asymptomatic patients with severe AS. Methods Symptom-limited treadmill exercise testing using the modified Bruce protocol was performed in 31 asymptomatic patients （mean age （62＋11） years） with severe AS （aortic valve area 〈1 cm2, peak aortic velocity （AV Vmax）〉4 m/sec, or a mean transaortic pressure gradient （AV mean PG）〉40 mmHg （1 mmHg=0.133 kPa）） with normal left ventricular （LV） systolic function （LV ejection fraction （EF）〉50%）. Clinical symptoms, vital signs, ECG, and Doppler hemodynamics were obtained during and/or immediately after exercise. Results Aortic valve replacement （AVR） was performed in 18 patients during follow-up. The patients who had AVR exhibited higher baseline AV mean PG （51 （35-84） vs. 44 （25.2-57.0） mmHg; P=0.031）. There were no significant differences between the AVR group and non-AVR group including exercise duration （7.47 （2.32-11.59） vs. 7.25 （4.06- 10.52） minutes, P=0.917）, exercise capacity （10.1 （4.6-12.8） vs. 10.1 （7.0-12.8） metabolic equivalents, P=0.675）, and an increment in AV mean PG by exercise （18.5 （3.2-48.0） vs. 12.6 （4.4-32.1） mmHg, P=0.366）. Univariate regression analysis revealed that independent determinant of AVR was the baseline AV mean PG （P=-0.031）. Conclusions Although additional value of exercise ECG was demonstrated, baseline transaortic mean pressure gradient is the major determinant of AVR. Further large-scale prospective studies are required to determine whether surgery should be recommended in the presence of an abnormal exercise ECG in asymptomatic severe AS.

Skin whitening and anti-corrugation activities of glycoprotein fractions from liquid extracts of boiled sea cucumber

Objective: To determine skin whitening and wrinkle improvement efficacy, glycoprotein fractions were extracted from liquid extracts of boiled sea cucumber and their effects on tyrosine and elastase inhibitory activities were assayed. Methods: Fractions above and below 50 k Da(>50 kD a and 50 kDa enhanced tyrosinase and elastase inhibitory activities by 50.84% and 28.78%, respectively. Correlations of the >50 kD a concentration with tyrosinase inhibitory(R^2=0.968) and elastase inhibitory(R2=0.983) efficacy were significant. Conclusions: >50 kD a glycoprotein fraction isolated from liquid extracts of boiled sea cucumber, which can serve as a functional cosmetic ingredient for whitening and wrinkle improvement of skin.
