Global hypomethylation in hepatocellular carcinoma and its relationship to aflatoxin B_1 exposure

AIM:To determine global DNA methylation in paired hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) samples using several different assays and explore the correlations between hypomethylation and clinical parameters and biomarkers,including that of aflatoxin B 1 ***:Using the radio labeled methyl acceptance assay as a measure of global hypomethylation,as well as two repetitive elements,including satellite 2(Sat2) by MethyLight and long interspersed nucleotide elements(LINE1),by ***:By all three assays,mean methylation levels in tumor tissues were significantly lower than that in adjacent *** acceptance assay log(mean ± SD) disintegrations/min/ng DNA are 70.0 ± 54.8 and 32.4 ± 15.6,respectively,P = 0.040;percent methylation of Sat2 42.2 ± 55.1 and 117.9 ± 88.8,respectively,P < 0.0001 and percent methylation LINE1 48.6 ± 14.8 and 71.7 ± 1.4,respectively,P < *** B 1 albumin(AFB 1-Alb) adducts,a measure of exposure to this dietary carcinogen,were inversely correlated with LINE1 methylation(r =-0.36,P = 0.034).CONCLUSION:Consistent hypomethylation in tumor compared to adjacent tissue was found by the three different *** 1 exposure is associated with DNA global hypomethylation,suggesting that chemical carcinogens may influence epigenetic changes in humans.

Effect of a cervical collar on optic nerve sheath diameter in trauma patients

BACKGROUND:As advocated in advanced trauma life support and prehospital trauma life support protocols,cervical immobilization is applied until cervical spine injury is *** study aimed to show the difference in optic nerve sheath diameter(ONSD)between patients with and without a cervical collar using computed tomography(CT).METHODS:This was a single-center,retrospective study examining trauma patients who presented to the emergency department between January 1,2021,and December 31,*** ONSD on brain CT of the trauma patients was measured and analyzed to determine whether there was a difference between the ONSD with and without the cervical ***:The study population consisted of 169 *** CT imaging of patients with(n=66)and without(n=103)cervical collars,the mean ONSD in the axial plane were 5.43±0.50 mm and 5.04±0.46 mm respectively for the right eye and 5.50±0.52 mm and 5.11±0.46 mm respectively for the left *** results revealed an association between the presence of a cervical collar and the mean ONSD,which was statistically significant(P<0.001)for both the right and left ***:A cervical collar may be associated with increased *** effect of this increase in the ONSD on clinical outcomes needs to be investigated,and the actual need for cervical collar in the emergency department should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Degradation of refractory organics in concentrated leachate by the Fenton process: Central composite design for process optimization

The primary aim of this study is inert COD removal from leachate nanofiltration concentrate because of its high concentration of resistant organic *** this framework,this study focuses on the treatability of leachate nanofiltration concentrate through Fenton oxidation and optimization of process parameters to reach the maximum pollutant removal by using response surface methodology(RSM).Initial pH,Fe2+concentration,H_(2)O_(2)/Fe^(2+)molar ratio and oxidation time are selected as the independent variables,whereas total COD,color,inert COD and UV254 removal are selected as the *** to the ANOVA results,the R^(2) values of all responses are found to be over 95%.Under the optimum conditions determined by the model(pH:3.99,Fe^(2+):150 mmol/L,H_(2)O_(2)/Fe^(2+):3.27 and oxidation time:84.8 min),the maximum COD removal efficiency is determined as 91.4%by the *** color,inert COD and UV254 removal efficiencies are determined to be 99.9%,97.2%and 99.5%,respectively,by the model,whereas the total COD,color,inert COD and UV254 removal efficiencies are found respectively to be 90%,96.5%,95.3%and 97.2%,experimentally under the optimum operating *** Fenton process improves the biodegradability of the leachate NF concentrate,increasing the BOD5/COD ratio from the value of 0.04 to the value of *** operational cost of the process is calculated to be 0.238€/g COD_(removed).The results indicate that the Fenton oxidation process is an efficient and economical technology in improvement of the biological degradability of leachate nanofiltration concentrate and in removal of resistant organic pollutants.

Wear Resistance and Non-Magnetic Layer Formation on 316L Implant Material with Plasma Nitriding

In this study, the applicability of plasma nitriding treatment in the production of non-magnetic and corrosion resistant layer on 316L stainless steel implant material was investigated. 316L stainless steel substrates were plasma nitrided at temperatures of 350 ℃, 375 ℃, 400 ℃, 425 ℃ and 450 ℃ for 2 h in a gas mixture of 50% N2-50% H2, respectively. It was determined that the treatment temperature is the most important factor on the properties of the corrosion resistant layer of 316L stainless steel. The results show that s-phase formed at the temperatures under 400 ℃, and at the temperatures above 400 ℃, instead of s-phase, CrN and y＇-Fe4N phases were observed in the modified layer. The electrical resistivity and surface roughness of the modified layer increase with treatment temperature. Under 400 ℃ the corrosion resistance increased with the temperature, above 400 ℃ it decreased with the increase in treatment temperature. It was analyzed that the electrical resistivity and the soft （ideal） ferro- magnetic properties of 316L stainless steel increased with treatment temperature during nitriding treatment. Also, plasma ni- triding at low temperatures provided magnetic behavior close to the ideal untreated 316L stainless steel.

Effects of Annealing on Thermoluminescence Peak Positions and Trap Depths of Synthetic and Natural Quartz by Means of the Various Heating Rate Method

Some environmental and experimental variables such as annealing process alter the structure of glow curves of some thermoluminescence *** investigate the effects of annnealing on thermoluminescence peaks of synthetic and natural quartz at different heating *** experimental results show that the peak temperatures of glow peaks in annealed samples shift to higher temperature *** amount of shifting is higher for low temperature peaks than high temperature *** trap depths of annealed and unannealed samples of both synthetic and natural quartz are also obtained by various heating rate *** is noted that the annealing process affects the trap depth of all glow peaks and the trap depth increases after the annealing process.

Ultra fine grinding of silver plant tailings of refractory ore using vertical stirred media mill

Ultra fine grinding of the plant tailings of a refractory silver ore was studied using a laboratory type vertical stirred media mill. Preliminary tests confirmed that ultra fine grinding substantially improves the extraction of silver from the tailings in cyanide leaching （i.e. 36% Ag extraction rate from the as-received tailings with d80 of 100 μm, c.f. 84% extraction rate after ultra fine grinding of the tailings with ds0 of 1.2 pro）. In the ultra fine grinding tests, the effects of ball diameter （2-4.5 mm）, stirring speed （200-800 r/m/n） and ball charge ratio （50%-80%） on the fineness of grind （ds0, ~tm） were investigated through a Box-Behnken design. Increasing stirrer speed and ball charge ratio decreased fineness of grind while larger balls resulted in the coarser products. The tests demonstrated that a fineness of grind less than 5 μm can be achieved under suitable conditions. Analysis of stress intensity indicated an optimum range of stress intensity of （0.8-2）× 10^- 3 μm for all power inputs.

Thermoluminescence Kinetic Parameters of TLD-600 and TLD-700 after 252Cf Neutron+Gamma and 90Sr-90Y Beta Radiations

The thermoluminescent(TL) properties such as glow curve structure, relative thermoluminescence sensitivity,dose response linearity of lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosimeters 6 LiF:Ti,Mg(TLD-600) and 7 LiF:Ti,Mg(TLD-700) are investigated after irradiationCf neutron+gamma andSr-Y beta sources at room temperature and then the obtained results are compared. The kinetic parameters, namely the order of kinetics b,activation energy Ea and the frequency factor s,are calculated using the computerized glow curve deconvolution(CGCD) program. The effect of heating rate on the glow curves of dosimeters is also investigated. The maximum TL peak intensities and the total area under the glow curves decrease with the increasing heating rate. There is no agreement with the kinetic parameters calculated by the CGCD program for both radiation sources.

Evolving role of the endoscopist in management of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors

Neuroendocrine tumors(NETs) are uncommon gastrointestinal neoplasms but have been increasingly recognized over the past few decades. Luminal NETs originate from the submucosa of the gastrointestinal tract and careful endoscopic exam is a key for accurate diagnosis. Despite their reputation as indolent tumors with a good prognosis,some NETs may have aggressive features with associated poor long-term survival. Management of NETs requires full understanding of tumor size,depth of invasion,local lymphadenopathy status,and location within the gastrointestinal tract. Staging with endoscopic ultrasound or cross-sectional imaging is important for determining whether endoscopic treatment is feasible. In general,small superficial NETs can be managed by endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD). In contrast,NETs larger than 2 cm are almost universally treated with surgical resection with lymphadenectomy. For those tumors between 11-20 mm in size,careful evaluation can identify which NETs may be managed with endoscopic resection. The increasing adoption of ESD may improve the results of endoscopic resection for luminal NETs. However,enthusiasm for endoscopic resection must be tempered with respect for the more definitive curative results afforded by surgical treatment with more advanced lesions.
