A four-component combination derived from huang-qin Decoction significantly enhances anticancer activity of irinotecan

huang-qin Decoction(HQD)is a classic prescription for diarrhea in Chinese medicine *** studies have demonstrated that HQD and its modified formulation PHY906 could ameliorate irinotecan(CPT-11)induced gastrointestinal(GI)toxicity and enhance its anticancer therapeutic ***,which constituents in HQD are effective is still unclear so *** study aims to screen out the key bioactive components combination from HQD that could enhance the anticancer effect of ***,the potential bioactive constituents were obtained through system pharmacology *** the bioactivity of each constituent was investigated synthetically from the aspects of NCM460 cell migration,TNF-αrelease of THP-1-derived macrophage and MTT assay in HCT116 *** contribution of each constituent in HQD was evaluated using the bioactive index Ei,which taken the content and bioactivity into comprehensive *** then,the most contributing constituents were selected out to form a keycomponent *** last,the bioefficacy of the key-component combination was validated in vitro and in *** a result,a key-component combination(HB4)consisting of four compounds baicalin,baicalein,glycyrrhizic acid and wogonin was screened *** vitro assessment indicated that HB4 could enhance the effect of CPT-11 on inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis in ***,the in vivo study confirmed that HB4 and HQD have similar pharmacological activity and could both enhance the antitumor effect of CPT-11 in HCT116 xenograft ***,HB4 could also reduce the CPT-11 induced GI toxicity.

Common blackbirds Turdus merula use anthropogenic structures as nesting sites in an urbanized landscape

The common blackbird Turdus merula is one of the most highly urbanized bird species. However, to date, the use of anthropogenic structures as nesting sites in the common blackbird is rarely documented, and the factors influencing its use of the anthropogenic structures as nesting sites remain unclear. In this study, we systematically quantified and determined the factors in- fluencing the use of anthropogenie structures as nesting sites in common blackbirds in a highly urbanized city of Hangzhou, Chi- na. We searched for nests of common blackbirds during four breeding seasons from 2010 to 2013. Among the 60 nests found, 34 nests were in anthropogenic structures such as wall ledges, air condition mounts, window canopies, cable poles, guardrails, eaves, balcony frames, flowerpots and flower shelves on balconies. We found that the available anthropogenic nest sites and the availa- ble nesting trees were main factors determining the use of anthropogenic structures as nesting sites in common blackbirds. In ur- ban environments, the amount of available anthropogenic nesting sites increased significantly, whereas the number of natural nesting sites reduced greatly. Our results suggest that common blackbirds can adjust their nest sites in response to urbanization and such nesting behavior shifts may aid them to colonize urban environments. From a management viewpoint, our results indi- cate that behavioral flexibility should be taken into account for effective urban wildlife management and conservation

Relationship between the orientation of texture and heteroepitaxy of diamond and related materials films on silicon single crystal and the valence electron structure of the interface

Diamond and cubic boron nitride films have already been applied practically be- cause of their excellent properties. The specific orientations of the films have spe- cial meaning on their application in optics and microelectronics fields. In this paper, the relative electron density differences of the interface between the different crystal planes of silicon substrate and those of diamond and cubic boron films are calculated with the empirical electron theory in solids and molecules. Analyses on the calculation results show that in the range of the researched films, the smaller the relative electron density difference between the film and the substrate is, the stabler the film is in thermodynamics. Therefore, the electron density difference is the essential factor of determining the orientation of the texture and heteroepitaxy of the films. The deductions accord well with the experimental facts. The calcula- tion methods and the theory not only provide a new angle of view for the research of the growth mechanism of diamond film and cubic boron nitride film on the sili- con substrate, but also provide a possible direction for the prediction of the orien- tation of other films.

Copper-comprising nanocrystals as well-defined electrocatalysts to advance electrochemical CO_(2) reduction

In the continuous development of electrochemical CO_(2) reduction (ECR), Cu-based electrocatalysts have received great attention, due to their unique ability to produce high value-added multicarbon products. Of particular interest are various Cu-comprising nanocrystals, not only because they usually show better catalytic properties than bulk materials, but also because their well-defined structures and highly tunable compositions facilitate in-depth mechanistic studies. This review aims to summarize the latest developments of electrocatalysts for ECR, with a focus on systems using Cu-comprising nanocrystals. We first give a general introduction to the field of ECR, covering the significance of this process, reaction mechanisms, catalyst evaluation criteria, and electrolytic cell configurations. Next, we discuss Cu-comprising nanocrystals developed for ECR by categorizing them into four groups: monometallic copper, copper-containing bimetals/multimetals, copper compounds, and copper–metal oxide hybrids;among these groups, we choose representative examples for detailed discussion on the synthetic methods, structural and compositional reaction sensitivities, and catalyst evolution during ECR. In the last section, we outline the challenges in this field from the fundamental and applicative aspects, and give perspectives on the expansion of catalyst varieties, the identification and preservation of active sites, and the exploration of industrially relevant operations for these nanocrystals. We hope the insights provided in this review will inspire the design and development of next-generation catalysts for ECR.

Mechanical Design with Experimental Verification of a Lightweight Exoskeleton Chair

In this study,a human-chair model was developed as the basis for a wearable-chair design.A prototype chair,HUST-EC,based on the model was fabricated and *** the optimization under the golden divisional method,an optimized simulation of the operating mode with the lowest chair height was implemented.A novel multi-link support structure has been established with parameters optimized using Matlab *** stress analysis of the solid models was conducted to ensure the adequate support from the designed chair for the *** subjects participated in the evaluation experiment,who performed both static tasks and dynamic *** experimental results consisted of subjective evaluation and objective *** experimental data demonstrate that(1)the HUST-EC can effectively reduce the activation level of related muscles at a variety of tasks;(2)the plantar pressure was reduced by 54%–67%;(3)the angle between the upper body and the vertical axis was reduced by 59%–77%;(4)the subjective scores for chair comfortability,portability,and stability were all higher than *** results further revealed that the designed chair can reduce the musculoskeletal burden and may improve work efficiency.

Selective excitation of resonances in gammadion metamaterials for terahertz wave manipulation

A gammadion terahertz(THz) metamaterial embedded with a pair of splits is experimentally investigated. By introducing the pair of splits at different arms, the transmitted amplitude at the resonance frequency can be manipulated from 61% to 24%. Broadband static resonance tunability from 1.11 to 1.51 THz is also demonstrated via varying the relative split positions at certain arms. The amplitude change and static resonance tunability are attributed to the introduced split pairs, which enable selective excitation of different resonance modes in the gammadion metamaterials. This work promises a new approach to design THz functional devices.

FEC design for remote control and data transmission of aeronautic and astronautic vehicles

This paper focuses on the advanced Forward Error Correction(FEC) based on LowDensity Parity-Check(LDPC) codes for remote control and data transmission of Aeronautic and Astronautic Vehicles(AAV). It shows that the nontransparent LDPC codes with odd row weights are able to resist phase inversion with a small computational overhead. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to use FEC to resist phase inversion. Then, a high hardware-efficient FEC design for AAV, which is capable of correcting random errors as well as phase inversion, is proposed based on circulant decomposition with circulant size of 2s. Such a(4096, 2048) LDPC code has been adopted in a data transmission system due to its excellent error performance and hardware efficiency.

Variation in reproductive life-history traits of Chinese Bulbuls(Pycnonotus sinensis)along the urbanization gradient in Hangzhou,China

Urbanization brings new selection pressures to wildlife living in cities,and changes in the life-history traits of urban species can reflect their responses to such *** date,most of the studies investigating the impacts of urbanization on avian life-history traits are conducted in Europe and North America,while such studies are often lacking in quickly developing countries in Asia(e.g.,China).In this study,we examined the variations in reproductive life-history traits of Chinese Bulbuls(Pycnonotus sinensis)along the urbanization gradient in Hangzhou,*** detected 234 natural nests of Chinese Bulbuls and continuously monitored them in two continuous breeding seasons from 2012 to *** collected data on seven life-history traits(laying date,incubation period,nestling period,clutch size,egg volume,hatching success rate,and fledging success rate).We used infrared cameras to record the number of feedings per hour as the measure of food resources for the *** measured nest predation pressure by monitoring 148 natural breeding nests during breeding seasons and 54 artificial nests immediately after breeding *** then calculated the urbanization synthetic index(USI)as a measure of the level of urbanization and examined its relationship with the seven life-history *** found that Chinese Bulbuls laid eggs significantly earlier with increasing ***,the other six life-history traits did not vary significantly with the ***,the feeding frequency of chicks increased significantly with the USI,but the nest predation pressure of Chinese Bulbuls decreased significantly with the *** food resources and reduced nest predation pressure in cities may lead to earlier laying date of Chinese *** study should test whether the earlier laying date of Chinese Bulbuls is the result of phenotypic plasticity or genetic change.

Bluetooth-based authentication system for ambient intelligence

According to the requirement of natural human-computer interaction for Ambient Intelligence （Aml）, a Bluetoothbased authentication technique is provided. An authentication network combining advantages of Bluetooth ad hoc network with the Ethernet is introduced first in detail. Then we propose a Bluetooth badge for storing the user＇s identification information. Finally, the authentication system based on Bluetooth badge and authentication network is introduced. It is demonstrated experimentally that the Bluetooth-based authentication technique can authenticate the user automatically.
