Human immunodeficiency virus-associated dementia complex with positive 14-3-3 protein in cerebrospinal fluid:A case report

BACKGROUND Human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-associated dementia(HAD)is a subcortical form of dementia characterized by memory deficits and psychomotor ***,HAD often presents with symptoms similar to those of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease(CJD),particularly in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS).CASE SUMMARY We report the case of a 54-year-old male who exhibited cognitive dysfunction and secondary behavioral changes following HIV infection and suspected prion *** patient was diagnosed with HIV during hospitalization and his cerebrospinal fluid tested positive for 14-3-3 *** electroencephalogram showed a borderline-abnormal periodic triphasic wave ***-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed moderate encephalatrophy and ***,symptomatic treatment and administration of amantadine were pursued for presumed CJD,but the patient’s condition continued to *** contrast,the patient’s condition improved following anti-HIV *** individual is also the only patient with this prognosis to have survived over 4 ***,the diagnosis was revised to *** In the diagnostic process of rapidly progressive dementia,it is crucial to rule out as many potential causes as possible and to consider an autopsy to diminish diagnostic *** 14-3-3 protein should not be regarded as the definitive marker for *** laboratory screening for infectious diseases is essential to enhance diagnostic precision,especially in AIDS patients with potential ***,a trial of diagnostic treatment may be considered when additional testing is not feasible.

Tuning the membrane rejection behavior by surface wettability engineering for an effective water-in-oil emulsion separation

Membrane-based separation is a promising technology to eliminate water impurities from the oil ***,it remains a great challenge to separate water from highly emulsified viscous oil owing to the high stability of the water droplets in *** we report a surface wettability engineering on an alumina ceramic membrane to achieve an efficient separation of a water-in-oil(W/O)*** with different carbon chain lengths and fluorinated status were introduced to endow the alumina membrane with different surface *** all the modified membranes exhibited excellent separation of the W/O without Span 80(surfactant),the one with amphiphobic wettability and lowest surface energy failed to separate the Span 80 stabilized W/*** presence of Span 80 reduced the interfacial tension of water droplets,making them easier to deform and penetrate the modified membrane with the lowest surface *** reveals that engineering proper surface wettability is the key to separating the oil and water ***,the modified membranes maintained decent separation performance and stability under long-term run separation of the emulsified W/O.

Determining the effect of relative size of sensor on calibration accuracy of TEM cells

The time-domain calibration coefficient of a D-Dot sensor should be identical across various transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cells to comply with the IEEE Std 1309. However, in our previous calibration experiments, poor consistency was observed. The size of D-Dot sensors relative to TEM cells is considered the main reason for this poor consistency. Therefore, this study aims at determining the calibration coefficient of a D-Dot sensor. We calculate the theoretical coefficient as a reference. Practical calibration experiments involve the processing of TEM cells with three different sizes. To observe the response more clearly, corresponding models are constructed and numerical simulations are performed. The numerical simulations and experimental calibration are in good agreement. To determine the calibration accuracy, we quantify the accuracy using the relative error of the calibration coefficient. By comparing the coefficients obtained, it can be concluded that the perturbation error is about 15% when the relative size is over 1/3. Further, the relative size should be less than 1/5 to obtain a relative error below 10%.

Significance of Survivin and PTEN expression in full lymph node-examined gastric cancer

AIM： To study the relationship between Survivin and PTEN expression and lymph node metastasis, depth of invasion and prognosis of gastric cancer patients in China.METHODS： Specimens of gastric cancer tissue were collected from the Affiliated Hospital of jianghan University. All the 140 patients had complete examination data. All lymph nodes were found by the fat-clearing method. The interrupted serial 4-micron sections, routine hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemical methods were used to detect the lymph node metastases. Gastric cancer tissue microarray was performed to test the expression of Survivin and PTEN （17A） in gastric cancer by immunohistochemical method. All data were processed using X^2 test, Fisher＇s exact test, Kaplan-Meyer Log-rank method and Cox multivariate analysis （SPSS 12.0 software）.RESULTS： One hundred and eighteen specimens were used in our tissue microarray （utilization rate was 82.4%）. A total of 7580 lymph nodes were found. Metastases were found in 90 specimens and 1618 lymph nodes were detected. The positive rate of Survivin and PTEN expression was 52.5% （62/118） and 76.2% （90/118）, respectively. A highly positive correlation was found between Survivin and PTEN expression （X^2=4.17, P=0.04）. Survivin expression was positively correlated with UICC N stage （X^2=8.69, P=0.03） and histological classification （X^2=4.41, P=0.04） by X^2 tests. PTEN expression was positively correlated with depth of invasion （P=0.02） and histological classification （X^2=5.47, P=0.02）. But Survivin and PTEN expressions were not related with prognosis of gastric cancer patients. A significant correlation between lymph node metastasis and prognosis was demonstrated by Cox multivariate analysis （X^2=4.85, P=0.028）.CONCLUSION： Survivin is positively correlated with PTEN expression in gastric cancer and is a molecular marker of lymph node metastasis while PTEN expression is a molecular marker of advanced gastric cancer. We report the discovery of a peculiar X-ray transient,EP240408a,by Einstein Probe （EP） and follow-up studies made with EP,Swift,NICER,GROND,ATCA and other ground-based multiwavelength *** new transient was first detected with Wide-field X-ray Telescope （WXT） on board EP on April 8th,2024,manifested in an intense yet brief X-ray flare lasting for *** flare reached a peak flux of 3.9×10-9erg cm-2s-1in 0.5-4 ke V,～300 times brighter than the underlying X-ray emission detected throughout the *** and more precise follow-up observations by EP/FXT,Swift and NICER confirmed the finding of this new *** X-ray spectrum is non-thermal in 0.5-10 ke V,with a power-law photon index varying *** X-ray light curve shows a plateau lasting for ～4 d,followed by a steep decay till becoming undetectable ～10 d after the initial *** on its temporal property and constraints from previous EP observations,an unusual timescale in the range of 7-23 d is found for EP240408a,which is intermediate between the commonly found fast and long-term *** counterparts have been found in optical and near-infrared,with the earliest observation at 17 h after the initial X-ray detection,suggestive of intrinsically weak emission in these *** demonstrate that the remarkable properties of EP240408a are inconsistent with any of the transient types known so far,by comparison with,in particular,jetted tidal disruption events,gamma-ray bursts,X-ray binaries and fast blue optical *** nature of EP240408a thus remains an *** suggest that EP240408a may represent a new type of transients with intermediate timescales of the order of～10 *** detection and follow-ups of more of such objects are essential for revealing their origin.

Molecular characterization and expression profiles of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the rice striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis （Lepidoptera： Crambidae）

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors （nAChRs） are members of the cys-loop ligand- gated ion channel （cysLGIC） superfamily, mediating fast synaptic cholinergic transmission in the central nervous system in insects. Insect nAChRs are the molecular targets of economically important insecticides, such as neonicotinoids and spinosad. Identification and characterization of the nAChR gene family in the rice striped stem borer, Chilo suppressa[is, could provide beneficial information about this important receptor gene family and contribute to the investigation of the molecular modes of insecticide action and resistance for current and future chemical control strategies. We searched our C. suppressalis transcriptome database using bombyx mori nAChR sequences in local BLAST searches and obtained the putative nAChR subunit complementary DNAs （cDNAs） via reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR） and rapid amplification of cDNA ends methods. Similar to B. mori, C. suppressalis possesses 12 nAChR subunits, including nine c^-type and three/%type subunits. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed the expression profiles of the nAChR subunits in various tissues, including the brain, subesophageal ganglion, thoracic ganglion, abdominal ganglion, hemocytes, fat body, foregut, midgut, hindgut and Malpighian tubules. Developmental expression analyses showed clear differential expression of nAChR subunits throughout the C. suppressalis life cycle. The identification of nAChR subunits in this study will provide a foundation for investigating the diverse roles played by nAChRs in C. suppressalis and for exploring specific target sites for chemicals that control agricultural pests while sparing beneficial species

Our world is composed of various materials with different structures,where spin structures have been playing a pivotal role in spintronic devices of the contemporary information *** from conventional collinear spin materials such as collinear ferromagnets and collinear antiferromagnetic ally coupled materials,noncollinear spintronic materials have emerged as hot spots of research attention due to exotic physical *** this review,we first introduce two types of noncollinear spin structures,i.e.,the chiral spin structure that yields real-space Berry phases and the coplanar noncollinear spin structure that could generate momentum-space Berry phases,and then move to relevant novel physical phenomena including topological Hall effect,anomalous Hall effect,multiferroic,Weyl fermions,spin-polarized current and spin Hall effect without spin-orbit coupling in these noncollinear spin ***,we summarize and elaborate the electric-field control of the noncollinear spin structure and related physical effects,which could enable ultralow power spintronic devices in *** the final outlook part,we emphasize the importance and possible routes for experimentally detecting the intriguing theoretically predicted spin-polarized current,verifying the spin Hall effect in the absence of spin-orbit coupling and exploring the anisotropic magnetoresistance and domain-wall-related magnetoresistance effects for noncollinear antiferromagnetic materials.

Parkinson’s disease(PD)is a neurodegenerative condition that results in dyskinesia,with oxidative stress playing a pivotal role in its *** peptides may thus present therapeutic potential for *** this study,a novel cathelicidin peptide(Cath-KP;GCSGRFCNLF NNRRPGRLTLIHRPGGDKRTSTGLIYV)was identified from the skin of the Asiatic painted frog(Kaloula pulchra).Structural analysis using circular dichroism and homology modeling revealed a uniqueαββconformation for *** vitro experiments,including free radical scavenging and ferric-reducing antioxidant analyses,confirmed its antioxidant *** the 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion(MPP^(+))-induced dopamine cell line and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine(MPTP)-induced PD mice,Cath-KP was found to penetrate cells and reach deep brain tissues,resulting in improved MPP^(+)-induced cell viability and reduced oxidative stress-induced damage by promoting antioxidant enzyme expression and alleviating mitochondrial and intracellular reactive oxygen species accumulation through Sirtuin-1(Sirt1)/Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2)pathway *** focal adhesion kinase(FAK)and p38 were also identified as regulatory *** the MPTP-induced PD mice,Cath-KP administration increased the number of tyrosine hydroxylase(TH)-positive neurons,restored TH content,and ameliorated *** the best of our knowledge,this study is the first to report on a cathelicidin peptide demonstrating potent antioxidant and neuroprotective properties in a PD model by targeting oxidative *** findings expand the known functions of cathelicidins,and hold promise for the development of therapeutic agents for PD.

Objective Several techniques based on circumferential pulmonary vein isolation(CPVI) have been successfully used in persistent atrial fibrillation(AF),but have not been adequately compared. Methods and Results This study included 315 patients registered in the Atrial Fibrillation Clinical Trial(AFCT) in *** patients had persistent AF and received CPVI,CPVI plus linear lesion(LL), or CPVI combined with ablation of complex fragmented atrial electrograms(CFAEs).Follow-up was conducted at 3,6 and 12 months after *** three protocols did not differ in efficacy at 3 months. At the 1-year follow-up,however,CPVI was inferior to CPVI + LL or CPVI + CFAEs(62.5%sinus rhythm vs.75.6%and 73.8%).CPVI + LL and CPVI + CFAEs were comparable to each *** three treatments increased left ventricle ejection fraction(EF),but did not affect left atrial diameter(LAD) or left ventricular end diastolic diameter(LVEDD).LL and ablation of CFAEs increased the total time of the procedure and the time of radiofrequency applications,but did not increase the time of *** patient in the CPVI arm had cardiac tamponade after ablation;there were no severe complications in any of the other groups. Conclusions CPVI combined with LL or CFAEs is superior to CPVI alone in maintaining sinus rhythm and is comparable in safety profile,but the benefits taked more than 6 months to *** significant difference can be detected between CPVI + LL and CPVI + CFAEs for at least 1 year after follow-up.

DEAR EDITOR, The distribution of the capped langur （Trachypithecus pileatus） in China has become controversial since Shortridge＇s langur （Trachypithecus shortridgei） was upgraded to a full species. The capped langur is considered to be distributed in northeast India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and northwest Myanmar only （Brandon-Jones et al., 2004; Choudhury, 2008, 2014; Das et al., 2008; Groves, 2001）.
