Metabolic rate and evaporative water loss in the silky starling （Sturnus sericeus）

To better understand the physiological characteristics of the silky starling（Sturnus sericeus）, its body temperature（Tb）, basal metabolic rate（BMR）, evaporative water loss（EWL） and thermal conductance（C） elicited by different ambient temperatures（Ta）（5-30 ℃） were determined in the present study. Our results showed that they have a high Tb（41.6±0.1 ℃）, a wide thermal neutral zone（TNZ）（20-27.5 ℃） and a relatively low BMR within the TNZ（3.37±0.17 mL O2/g·h）. The EWL was nearly stable below the TNZ（0.91±0.07 mg H2O/g·h） but increased remarkably within and above the TNZ. The C was constant below the TNZ, with a minimum value of 0.14±0.01 mL O2/g·h·℃. These findings indicate that the BMR, Tb and EWL of the silky starling were all affected by Ta, especially when Ta was below 20℃ and the EWL plays an important role in thermal regulation.

BACKGROUND Vascular injury during thoracoscopic surgery for esophageal cancer is a rare but life-threatening complication that can lead to severe hypotension and *** need to provide rapid and effective treatment to save patients'*** SUMMARY A 54-year-old male patient was scheduled to undergo a thoracoscopic-assisted radical resection of esophageal cancer through the upper abdomen and right *** dissociating the esophagus from the carina through the right chest,unexpected profuse bleeding occurred from a suspected pulmonary vascular *** the surgeon attempted to achieve hemostasis,the patient developed severe *** anesthesiologist implemented continuous positive airway pressure(CPAP)using a bronchial blocker(BB),which effectively improved the patient’s oxygenation and the operation was completed *** CPAP using a BB can resolve severe hypoxemia caused by accidental injury of the left inferior pulmonary vein during surgery.

Understanding the evolution of irradiation-induced defects is of critical importance for the performance estimation of nuclear materials under ***,we systematically investigate the influence of He on the evolution of Frenkel pairs and collision cascades in tungsten(W)via using the object kinetic Monte Carlo(OKMC)*** findings suggest that the presence of He has significant effect on the evolution of irradiation-induced *** the one hand,the presence of He can facilitate the recombination of vacancies and self-interstitial atoms(SIAs)in *** can be attributed to the formation of immobile He-SIA complexes,which increases the annihilation probability of vacancies and *** the other hand,due to the high stability and low mobility of He-vacancy complexes,the growth of large vacancy clusters in W is kinetically suppressed by He ***,in comparison with the injection of collision cascades and He in sequential way at 1223 K,the average sizes of surviving vacancy clusters in W via simultaneous way are smaller,which is in good agreement with previous experimental *** results advocate that the impurity with low concentration has significant effect on the evolution of irradiation-induced defects in materials,and contributes to our understanding of W performance under irradiation.

AIM：To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinases 1 and 3（MMP-1 and MMP-3） and their tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases 1 and 3（ TIMP-1 and TIMP-3） in the conjunctiva of eyes with conjunctivochalasis（CCh）.METHODS：The conjunctival tissue was obtained from the CCh patients and controls,the MMPs/TIMPs expression concentration was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay（ELISA） and immunofluorescence *** expression levels of MMPs/TIMPs in the CCh fibroblasts were determined by analyzing its concentration in the cellular supernatant that was abstracted from the in vitro cultured CCh ***：MMP-1 and MMP-3 levels determined by ELISA were both significantly higher in the CCh group than that in the control group（P= 0.042,0.022,respectively）,so was the levels of TIMP-1（P= 0.010）.No significant difference in the expression of TIMP-3 in conjunctiva was found between the two groups（P= 0.298）.The expression of MMP-1 and MMP-3 were both up-regulated significantly in the CCh group（P= 0.040,0.001,respectively） on immunofluorescence ***-1 and MMP-3 expression in the fibroblasts were both significantly higher in the CCh group than that in the control group（P= 0.027,0.001,respectively）,while neither the TIMP-1 nor TIMP-3 expression was significantly different between the two groups（P= 0.421,0.237,respectively）.CONCLUSION：The overexpression of MMP-1 and MMP-3 in conjunctival tissue and fibroblasts may play an important role in the pathogenesis and development of CCh.

Objective:Identifying novel strategies to prevent particulate matter(PM)-induced lung injury is crucial for the reduction of the morbidity of chronic respiratory *** combined intervention represented by herbal formulae for simultaneously targeting multiple pathological processes can provide a more beneficial effect than the single *** aim of this paper is therefore to design a safe and effective medicinal and edible Chinese herbs(MECHs)formula against PM-induced lung ***:PM-induced oxidative stress,inflammatory response and apoptosis A549 cell model were used to screen anti-oxidant,anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic MECHs,respectively.A network pharmacology method was utilized to rationally design a novel herbal *** performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer was utilized to assess the quality control of MECHs *** excretion of magnetic iron oxide nanospheres of the MECHs formula was estimated in *** MECH formula against PM-induced lung injury was investigated with mice ***:Five selected herbs were rationally designed to form a new MECH formula,including Citri Exocarpium Rubrum(Juhong),Lablab Semen Album(Baibiandou),Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma(Baizhu),Mori Folium(Sangye)and Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma(Yuzhu).The formula effectively promoted the magnetic iron oxide nanospheres excretion in *** mid/high dose formula significantly prevented PM-induced lung damage in mice by enhancing the activity of SOD and GSH-Px,reducing the MDA and ROS level and attenuating the upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine(IL-6,IL-8,IL-1βand TNFa),down regulating the protein expression of NF-κB,STAT3 and ***:Our findings suggest that the effective MECHs formula will become a novel strategy for preventing PM-induced lung injury and provide a paradigm for the development of functional foods using MECHs.

As one of important members of refractory materials,tungsten phosphide(WP)holds great potential for fundamental study and industrial applications in many fields of science and technology,due to its excellent properties such as superconductivity and as-predicted topological band ***,synthesis of high-quality WP crystals is still a challenge by using tradition synthetic methods,because the synthesis temperature for growing its large crystals is very stringently required to be as high as 3000℃,which is far beyond the temperature capability of most laboratory-based devices for crystal *** addition,high temperature often induces the decomposition of metal phosphides,leading to off-stoichiometric samples based on which the materials'intrinsic properties cannot be *** this work,we report a high-pressure synthesis of single-crystal WP through a direct crystallization from cooling the congruent W-P melts at 5 GPa and^3200℃.In combination of x-ray diffraction,electron microscope,and thermal analysis,the crystal structure,morphology,and stability of recovered sample are well *** final product is phase-pure and nearly stoichiometric WP in a single-crystal form with a large grain size,in excess of one millimeter,thus making it feasible to implement most experimental measurements,especially,for the case where a large crystal is *** in synthesis of high-quality WP crystals at high pressure can offer great opportunities for determining their intrinsic properties and also making more efforts to study the family of transition-metal phosphides.

Background Different diagnostic and grading systems of conjunctivochalasis have resulted in apparent disparity between the prevalence rates of recent population-based *** study aimed to investigate the disparity between 4-level system cited from Meller and Tseng in 1998 （abbreviated here as Meller＇s system） and 5-level system modified from Meller＇s system cited from Zhang and associates （abbreviated here as Zhang＇s system） regarding the diagnosis and the patients＇ preferences for the treatment of conjunctivochalasis in the general *** A total of 546 senile residents living in the Guiyangyuan community of Shanghai,China,participated in the *** diagnostic criteria for conjunctivochalasis were based on two diagnostic grading systems：Meller＇s system and Zhang＇s system,which was modified from Meller＇s *** participants＇ preference regarding medical treatment for conjunctivochalasis was determined according to the response to a *** year later,a follow-up interview determines whether the patient had undergone surgery for *** With Meller＇s system,398 participants were confirmed as having conjunctivochalasis,and the prevalence rate was 72.89％.According to Zhang＇s system,only 213 participants were diagnosed as having conjunctivochalasis,and the prevalence rate was 39.01％.A total of 109 eyes underwent medical treatment or surgery for conjunctivochalasis in the following year,including eight eyes that were diagnosed as grade Ⅱ and 101 eyes that were diagnosed as grade Ⅲ according to Meller＇s system and five eyes that were diagnosed as grade Ⅰ,55 eyes that were diagnosed as grade Ⅱ,31 eyes that were diagnosed as grade Ⅲ,and 18 eyes that were diagnosed as grade Ⅳ according to Zhang＇s *** Diagnoses of conjunctivochalasis using Zhang＇s system are more consistent with patient requests and the medical treatment strategies used than diagnoses made using Meller＇s system.

Objective To explore the imaging and related clinical characteristics of magnetic resonance （MR） delayed enhancement in patients with ischemic or nonischemic heart disease. Methods Thirty-two cases who underwent MR myocardial cine and delayed enhancement imaging from January 2004 to October 2006 were retrospectively analyzed. The cine sequence imaging included the four-chamber view and the left ventricular short axis view. The delayed enhancement imaging was taken 10 minutes after the infusion of gadolinium from the antecubital vein with a segmented inversion-recovery-prepared Tl-weighted fast gradient echo sequence. Patients underwent coronary computed tomography angiography （CTA） two weeks before or after the MR imaging examination. Combined with clinical history, the clinical and MR imaging characteristics of the patients who had delayed enhancement were analyzed. Results MR delayed enhancement could be found in 16 cases. Among them, 12 cases had ischemic heart disease. Their coronary CTA showed one to three vessel diseases. The delayed enhancement was transmural or subendocardium, and the area of delayed enhancement corresponded well with one or more coronary arteries which had severe stenosis or occlusion. Four cases had nonischemic heart diseases One case was dilated cardiomyopathy, with diffuse small midwall spots in delayed enhancemen and only 30% stenosis of the anterior descending coronary artery in coronary CTA. One case was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, with delayed enhancement of strip- and patch-shaped at midwall of the hypertrophic myocardiurn. One case was restrictive cardiomyopathy, and the delayed enhancement was located in the area of subendocardium of both the right and left ventricles. Coronary CTA of these two cases were normal The other case was a mass of the lateral wall of the left ventricle, and the delayed enhancement with a clumpy shape was located in the lateral wall of the left ventricle.
