SDG space: Revealing the structure and complementarities among sustainable development goals in China

To achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, it is essential to understand the interlinkages between the goals. Previous research has investigated these interactions by focusing on their correlations. However, few studies have systematically prioritized them from a structural perspective through the complementarity measurements and empirically validated their policy effectiveness, such as which goals and indicators impact other SDGs most, especially in China. This study introduces a new concept known as the ‘SDG space’ by employing the “Product Space” approach in network science and economics. It measures the complementarities between SDGs and indicators through their network structures in investigating effective policy design. Using the most recent available but unpublished data for 31 Chinese provinces, the SDG space was constructed at the 17 SDG and 118 indicator levels by analyzing the probability of comparative advantage between each SDG or indicator pair co-occurring in the same place. Historical data confirm that in the ‘SDG Space’ network, a goal connected to other well-developed goals would enjoy better future growth and vice versa. The structure reveals that SDG 4 (quality Education), 15 (Life on Land), and 1 (No Poverty) are critical goals with transformative synergies to other SDGs. Furthermore, we identified strong complementarities between land-based ecosystems and clean water and climate actions using the finer-grained indicator-level space. These findings help pave the way for China toward a sustainable future by providing science-based policy recommendations for decision-makers. They can be generally applied to other countries and regions to assist in navigating toward sustainable development. © 2024

Insights into the 3D thermal structure of interplate earthquakes in the Colombia–Ecuador subduction zone

Throughout the 20th century, several large megathrust earthquakes were observed in the Colombia–Ecuador subduction zone which widely ruptured plate interfaces, causing considerable damage and loss of life. The occurrence of earthquakes in subduction zones is thought to be closely related to the thermal structure of the incoming plate. However, in the case of the subducting Nazca Plate beneath the Colombia–Ecuador zone, the thermal structure remains unclear, especially its hydraulic distribution. On the basis of 3D thermal models, we present new insights into the plate interface conditions of Colombia–Ecuador interplate and megathrust earthquakes. We show that the plate geometry strongly affects the along-strike thermal structure of the slab beneath Colombia and Ecuador, with the subduction of the Carnegie Ridge playing an important role. Our results further reveal that the unique geometry of the Nazca Plate is the primary reason for the relatively high temperatures of the slab beneath Colombia. We suggest that the positions of the100–200 °C and 350–450 °C isotherms on the plate interface determine the updip and downdip limits of the seismogenic zone. For Colombia–Ecuador interplate earthquakes, the released fluids control the distribution of shallow-depth earthquakes, whereas the age and geometry of the slab control the distribution of intermediate-depth earthquakes. The average temperature of the plate interface at the upper limit of large megathrust earthquakes is hotter than previously thought, which is more consistent with our understanding of the Colombia–Ecuador subduction zone. We predict that the potential location of future large seismic events could be in the rupture zone of past seismic events or offshore of northern Colombia.

Rapid assessment of avoidable blindness in Yueqing,an economically developed area in eastern China

AIM:To evaluate the prevalence and the causes of blindness,severe visual impairment(SVI),and visual impairment(VI)and to investigate the frequency of cataract surgery in people aged≥50y in Yueqing,Zhejiang Province,***:A population-based,cross-sectional study was performed using the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness ***-seven clusters,each consisting of 50 people aged≥50y,were selected by probabilityproportionate-to-size *** outreach teams conducted door-to-door *** acuity(VA)was measured using a tumbling E *** status and causes of VI were assessed by ophthalmologists for individuals with a VA ofquestionnaire was used to collect information about cataract ***:Of 4350 eligible individuals,4120 were examined with a 94.7%response ***-and genderadjusted prevalence of blindness,SVI,and VI were 0.5%(95%CI,0.3%–0.7%),0.7%(95%CI,0.4%–1.0%),and 4.8%(95%CI,4.2%–5.5%),*** was associated with an increased prevalence of VI,and the most common cause of VI was untreated cataracts,with the main barriers to cataract surgery being a lack of knowledge or awareness about *** the 415 eyes operated on for cataracts,68(16.4%)eyes had a poor outcomes(VA6/18).CONCLUSION:Prevalence rates of blindness,SVI,and VI in Yueqing are lower than other reported Chinese population-based *** remain the most common cause of blindness and VI.

服务器无感知计算是新兴的云计算模式,它基于“函数即服务(FaaS)”的范式,以函数为部署和调度的基本单位,为用户提供大规模并行和自动伸缩的函数执行服务,且无需用户管理底层资源.对于用户,服务器无感知计算能够帮助他们摆脱集群底层基础设施管理的负担,专注于业务层的开发和创新;对于服务提供商,服务器无感知计算将应用分解为细粒度的函数,极大地提高了调度效率和资源利用率.显著的优势让服务器无感知计算迅速吸引了业界的注意,然而,服务器无感知计算与传统云计算迥然不同的计算模式以及对任务各方面的严格限制给应用的迁移带来了诸多障碍,各种越来越复杂的任务也对服务器无感知计算的性能提出了越来越高的要求,服务器无感知计算的性能优化成为一个重要的研究课题.从4个方面对服务器无感知计算系统性能优化技术的相关研究工作进行梳理和综述,并介绍现有的系统实现.(1)介绍面向典型任务的优化技术,包括任务适配和针对特定任务的系统优化;(2)综述沙箱环境的优化工作,包括沙箱方案和冷启动优化技术,它们是决定函数运行速度的核心;(3)概括I/O和通信技术的优化,它们是服务器无感知计算应用程序的主要性能瓶颈;(4)简述相关的资源调度技术,包括面向平台和面向用户的调度策略,它们决定着系统的资源利用率和任务的执行效率.最后,总结当前服务器无感知计算性能优化技术所面临的问题和挑战,并展望未来可能的发展方向.

Unlocking the stable interface in aqueous zinc-ion battery with multifunctional xylose-based electrolyte additives

The growth of dendrites and the side reactions occurring at the Zn anode pose significant challenges to the commercialization of aqueous Zn-ion batteries(AZIBs). These challenges arise from the inherent conflict between mass transfer and electrochemical kinetics. In this study, we propose the use of a multifunctional electrolyte additive based on the xylose(Xylo) molecule to address these issues by modulating the solvation structure and electrode/electrolyte interface, thereby stabilizing the Zn anode. The introduction of the additive alters the solvation structure, creating steric hindrance that impedes charge transfer and then reduces electrochemical kinetics. Furthermore, in-situ analyses demonstrate that the reconstructed electrode/electrolyte interface facilitates stable and rapid Zn^(2+)ion migration and suppresses corrosion and hydrogen evolution reactions. As a result, symmetric cells incorporating the Xylo additive exhibit significantly enhanced reversibility during the Zn plating/stripping process, with an impressively long lifespan of up to 1986 h, compared to cells using pure ZnSO4electrolyte. When combined with a polyaniline cathode, the full cells demonstrate improved capacity and long-term cyclic stability. This work offers an effective direction for improving the stability of Zn anode via electrolyte design, as well as highperformance AZIBs.

A seaweed-inspired separator for high performance Zn metal batteries:Boosting kinetics and confining side-reactions

Uncontrolled dendrite growth,sluggish reaction kinetics,and drastic side reactions on the anodeelectrolyte interface are the main obstacles that restrict the application prospect of aqueous zinc-ion *** glass fiber（GF） separator with chemical inertness is almost ineffective in restricting these ***,inspired by the ionic enrichment behavior of seaweed plants,a facile biomass species,anionic sodium alginate（SA）,is purposely decorated on the commercial GF separator to tackle these issues towards Zn *** from the abundant zincophilic functional groups and superior mechanical strength properties,the as-obtained SA@GF separator could act as ion pump to boost the Zn2+transference number（0.68）,reduce the de-solvation energy barrier of hydrated Zn2+,and eliminate the undesired concentration polarization effect,which are verified by experimental tests,theoretical calculations,and finite element simulation,*** on these efficient modulation mechanisms,the SA@GF separator can synchronously achieve well-aligned Zn deposition and the suppression of parasitic ***,the Zn‖Zn coin cell integrated with SA@GF separator could yield a prolonged calendar lifespan over 1230 h(1 mA cm-2and 1 mAh cm-2),exhibiting favorable competitiveness with previously reported separator modification ***,the Zn-MnO2full and pouch cell assembled with the SA@GF separator also delivered superior cycling stability and rate performance,further verifying its practical application *** work provides a new design philosophy to stabilize the Zn anode from the aspect of separator.
