Meiofaunal Community Spatial Distribution and Diversity as Indicators of Ecological Quality in the Bohai Sea, China

The Bohai Sea is a semi-enclosed marginal sea in the North West Pacific. Meiofauna samples were collected from 22 stations in the Bohai Sea to document the spatial distribution, structure, and diversity of the meiofaunal community and investigate the major factors influencing the community features. A total of 20 higher taxa of meiofauna were identified. The dominant group was Nematoda, accounting for 90.8% of the total meiofaunal abundance on average, followed by Copepoda, Bivalvia, Polychaeta, Kinorhyncha, and Ostracoda. Meiofaunal abundance ranged from 121 ± 89 ind(10 cm2)-1 to 3042 ± 1054 ind(10 cm2)-1. Diversity indices also varied among different stations, with a Margalef's richness index(d) of 1.1–3.1, Shannon-Wiener diversity index(H′) of 0.7–1.8, and Pielou's evenness index(J′) of 0.4– 0.8. Meiofaunal abundance and diversity indices were significantly lower in the areas of Bohai Bay and adjacent to Laizhou Bay. The correlation analysis showed that meiofaunal abundance and diversity indices are closely linked to variations in sediment silt-clay content, medium grain size(MDΦ), and chlorophyll-a concentrations. The ecological quality status of most stations can be ranked from poor to moderate based on meiofaunal richness. According to the value of nematode to copepod ratio(Ne:Co ratio), most stations are uncontaminated, except seven stations are slightly or moderately contaminated. Both meiofaunal richness and Ne:Co ratio indicate the poor ecological quality of three stations adjacent to Laizhou Bay. The efficiency of the meiofauna communities as environmental indicators will be tested in a greater area in the future studies.

A quantitative study on meiofauna was carried out along a transect throughout the Changjiang Estuary＇ s oxygen minimum zone （OMZ） in the East China Sea. There exist two distinct station groups in the OMZ： the fine-grained hypoxic area and the more fine-grained anoxie area. Meiofauna abundance ranged from （ 101.5±31.0） ind./cm^2 （ hypoxie area） to （369.9±123.9） ind./cm^2（ anoxic area） along the transect. Free-living marine nematodes were the numerically dominant meiofauna at every station. The anoxic area differed significantly in meiofauna abundance and vertical distribution pattern from the hypoxic area. Within the anoxic area, nematodes abundance increased and amounted to over 90% of the total meiofauna; about 50% of nematodes were found in the 2-5 and 5-8 cm layers. At hypoxie stations, about over 85 % were restricted to the top 2 cm. Benthic eopepod abundance and dominance decreased consistently with the oxygen gradient. The pattern of meiofauna biomass was similar to that of abundance. The correlation analysis of the meiofauna numbers and environmental parameters indicated that abundance and biomass of total meiofauna and nematodes had significant or highly significant （ P 〈 0.05 or P 〈 0.01 ） correlations with Chl a and Pha a, but no significant （ P 〉 0.05 ） correlations with bottom-water oxygen （ BWO2 ）. On the other hand, there was a highly significant positive correlation between benthic eopepod abundance and bottom-water oxygen （P 〈 0.05 ）. The investigation on the nematode community structure indicated that two different nematode communities existed in hypoxic and anoxic areas. In certain way, the shift in nematode species composition distinguishes the anoxia to hypoxia. Nematode diversity was generally lower within the anoxic stations than the hypoxic ones, but the difference was not significant. Free living marine nematodes were sampled from two sandy beaches in Dalian City,in December of 2015,and April,July,and October of *** spatial and seasonal variations of marine nematode species diversity(based on species abundance dataset)and functional diversity(based on functional traits dataset:feeding types and life history strategies)were investigated to understand the environmental drivers and how they respond to specific environmental *** granularity was revealed to be the main environmental factor causing spatial differences in nematode diversity indices between the two *** diversity indices,namely species number,Margalef index,Shannon-Wiener diversity index(H’),were higher in fine-grained sediments,while the functional diversity indices,including functional evenness,functional dispersion,and Rao’s quadratic entropy index(RaoQ),were higher in coarse-grained *** species diversity indices also fluctuated with seasonal variations of temperature,dissolved oxygen,pH,salinity,and sediment chlorophyll-a within the study ***,functional diversity indices did not show significant seasonal variations and exhibited weak correlation with the studied environmental ***,the functional diversity indices were negatively correlated with the species diversity indices,suggesting an inconsistent response to environmental changes.A decrease in nematode species diversity in coarse sands,accompanied by an increase in functional diversity,can be regarded as an early warning signal of environment *** more biological traits are involved in calculating functional diversity indices,it will be helpful for the future study of the internal connections of species diversity and functional diversity.

Four Newly Recorded Free-living Marine Nematodes(Comesomatidae) from the East China Sea

Three species in genus Sabatieria and one in genus Cervonema from the East China Sea were recorded. S. breviseta is characterized by uniformly punctuated coarse dots, large amphids of 5.5 turns (♂) and prominent gubernaculum median piece. The characters of S. breviseta agree quite well with the European original descriptions and only differ in the male amphid turns (5.5 vs. 4.0 turns) and unmodified preanal supplements (5-7 vs. 6). S. pulchra can be recognized by amphid 2.75 turns, irregularly arranged lateral dots, and the first three supplements anterior to the anus, which are more widely spaced than the following ones. The excretory system of S. breviseta and S. pulchra shows sexual dimorphism. S. celtica is defined by amphids 2.00-2.25 turns, weakly developed pharyngeal bulb, curved apophyses and 12-13 conspicuous supplements. C. deltensis is characterized by amphids 4.75 turns, ovate pharyngeal posterior bulb, sperm dimorphism, 7 thin preanal supplements, and long tail cylindrical portion (50%-53% of tail length). All the three Sabatieria species are for the first time recorded in Chinese waters. C. deltensis was originally isolated from the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea and newly recorded in the East China Sea.

Biodiversity pattems of free-living marine nematodes were studied using specific, taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity measures in the southern Yellow Sea, China. The results showed that the average of Shannon-Wiener diversity index （H＇） in the study area was 3.17. The higher values were distributed in the east part of Shandong coastal waters and north part of Jiangsu coastal waters, while the lower values were distributed in the southern Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass （YSCWM）. The average of taxonomic diversity （A） was 62.09 in the study region. The higher values were distributed in the transitional areas between the coastal areas and the southem YSCWM, while the lower values were distributed near the north part of Jiangsu coastal waters and the YSCWM. Results of correlation analysis of species diversity and taxonomic diversity showed that some of the two kinds of diversity index were inde- pendent, which suggested that combining the two kinds of diversity indices can reflect the ecological characteristics better. A test for 95% probability funnels of average taxonomic distinctness and variation in taxonomic distinctness suggested that Station 8794 （in the YSCWM） was outside of the 95% probability funnels, which may be due to the environmental stress. Results of correlation analysis between marine nematodes biodiversity and environmental variables showed that the sediment characteristics （Mdo and Silt-clay fraction） and phaeophorbide a （Pha-a） were the most important factors to determine the biodiversity patterns of marine nematodes.

Nematode assemblage composition, trophic structure and biodiversity were followed over an annual cycle in a sandy beach of the Taiping Bay of Qingdao, China. Nematode assemblage in the sandy beach maintained a high genus diversity （75 genera）. Mlero- laimus and Bathylaimus were the dominant genus of the nematode assemblage, accounting for 66% of the total nematode abundance. The nematodes＇ dominant trophic structure changed seasonally as a response to the seasonal changes in food quality. Epigrowth-feeder nematodes （2A） were the dominant trophic groups in the trophic structure with the highest abundance in spring because of phytoplankton bloom, while the feeding type （ 1 B） showed higher abundance in summer that was due to the increasing of sediment detritus after spring bloom. Furthermore, species diversity and evenness calculated on nematodes identified to the genus level displayed significant temporal changes, which was also reflected by the index of trophic diversity. According to the cluster analysis, the nematode community structure of the whole year was clearly separated into two periods （A and B）. Biota-Envlron- ment matching （BIOENV） results showed that seawater temperature, sediment Chl a and grain size were responsible for the nema- tode community structure variation in spring and summer period （Period A）. However, seawater/interstitial water temperature, interstitial water dissolved oxygen concentration,interstitial water salinity, and sediment Ph a a were more important in constructing the autumn and winter period （Period B） nematode community structure.

Meiofauna are fundamental components in mangrove ecosystem which play important roles in the energy flow and mat-ter *** order to reveal the spatio-temporal distribution of meiofaunal assemblages in mangrove habitats,sediment samples were collected in July(summer)and October(autumn)of 2013,January(winter)and April(spring)of 2014 in the mangrove tidal flat of Futian,Shenzhen,China.A total of 14 meiofaunal taxa were identified,including free-living marine nematodes,benthic copepods,polychaetes,oligochaetes,ostracods,isopods,***,there were also undetermined *** showed that the abun-dance range of meiofauna was(488.35±71.29)-(5136.36±623.38)ind(10 cm)−*** nematodes were the most dominant group,with an average abundance of(1869.56±227.92)ind(10 cm)−2,accounting for 98.35%of the total abundance of *** sea-sonal distribution of meiofauna showed that the abundance was the highest in summer,followed by those in spring,winter,and *** distribution showed that meiofauna were mainly distributed in the upper sediment layer(0-5 cm),with a proportion of 89.56%.Correlation analysis between meiofauna and environmental factors showed that meiofaunal abundance and biomass had significantly negative correlation with *** analysis between meiofaunal assemblages and environmental factors show-ed that meiofaunal assemblages were affected by the combined effects of temperature,salinity,sediment median grain size,water content,and chlorophyll a content.

In this paper, we assessed the ecological and biodiversity status in the Bohai Sea through a quantitative survey on mac-rofaunal community at 25 stations in Laizhou Bay and adjacent waters in the autumn of *** tested the robustness and effectiveness of taxonomic distinctness as an ecological indictor by analyzing its correlation with species richness and natural environmental variables and by analyzing other ecological indicators (Shannon-Wiener H' and W statistics from Abundance Biomass Comparison curve).Results so obtained indicated that the benthic environment of the study waters in general is not under major impact of anthropogenic disturbance, but some stations in Laizhou Bay and along the coast of the Shandong Peninsula and even in the central Bohai Sea might be moderately disturbed and showed signs of ecological *** taxonomic distinctness measures △+ and Λ+ were independent of sampling effort and natural environment factors and were compliant to other ecological *** application of the taxonomic distinctness indicator to assess marine biodiversity and ecosystem health on a larger regional scale with historical data seems promising.

We investigated the diversity and structure of free-living marine nematode communities at three sandy beaches representing typical intertidal environments of a temperate zone in Qingdao,Shandong Province,*** nematode abundance ranged from 1006 to 2170 ind.10 cm-2,and a total of 34 nematode genera were recorded,of which only 8 were common in all the studied ***'s evenness and Shannon-Wiener diversity index were the lowest at the second beach where nematode abundance was the *** highest species diversity index coincided with the lowest nematode abundance at Shilaoren *** median grain size,sorting coefficient,and chlorophyll-a content were essential for differentiation in nematode abundance and species diversity,whereas taxonomic diversity of nematode was homogeneous across the three *** 0–20 cm sediment profile,nematode abundance declined abruptly with depth,whereas nematode diversity changed gently with obvious difference in 16–20 cm *** granulometry and chlorophyll-a content were the two foremost factors which influenced the vertical distribution pattern of nematode generic ***-selective deposit feeders constituted the most dominant trophic group,followed by epistratum ***(family:Tripyloididae) dominated at the second and Yangkou beach,while Theristus(family:Xyalidae) prevailed at Shilaoren *** and predators became important at Shilaoren beach because of the high proportion of *** though,nematode community of the studied beaches did not differ significantly from each other.
