Impact of lateral force-resisting system and design/construction practices on seismic performance and cost of tall buildings in Dubai, UAE

The local design and construction practices in the United Arab Emirates （UAE）, together with Dubai＇s unique rate of development, warrant special attention to the selection of Lateral Force-Resisting Systems （LFRS）. This research proposes four different feasible solutions for the selection of the LFRS for tall buildings and quantifies the impact of these selections on seismic performance and cost. The systems considered are： Steel Special Moment-Resisting Frame （SMRF）, Concrete SMRF, Steel Dual System （SMRF with Special Steel Plates Shear Wall, SPSW）, and Concrete Dual System （SMRF with Special Concrete Shear Wall, SCSW）. The LFRS selection is driven by seismic setup as well as the adopted design and construction practices in Dubai. It is found that the concrete design alternatives are consistently less expensive than their steel counterparts. The steel dual system is expected to have the least damage based on its relatively lesser interstory drifts. However, this preferred performance comes at a higher initial construction cost. Conversely, the steel SMRF system is expected to have the most damage and associated repair cost due to its excessive flexibility. The two concrete alternatives are expected to have relatively moderate damage and repair costs in addition to their lesser initial construction cost.

Objective:To determine the prevalent pathogens responsible for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(SBP) and their sensitivity pattern,to test the efficiency of different culture techniques in microbial isolation,and to study the diagnostic predictors of such ***:One hundred eight SBP episodes from 92 adult patients were compared to 88 cirrhotic ascites patients cross - matched with age and sex without *** fluid was subjected to cytological,biochemical examination and culture on both conventional and blood culture bottles at the bedside for bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility ***:The prevalence of SBP was 25.02%.Logistic regression analysis revealed that;previous SBP episode,low ascitic fluid protein levels, high serum creatinine and low serum albumin levels were the independent significant predictors of *** forty - five per cent of SBP episodes were detected by conventional culture compared to 73.15%by modified technique with a significant *** - negative bacteria were the cause of SBP in 46(58.23%) culture positive *** coli and Staphylococcus aureus were the most commonly detected organisms. Resistance to different antibiotics was ***:Culture of ascitic fluid in blood culture bottles at bedside increases the sensitivity of SBP *** is a recent increase in Gram - positive pathogen with emergence of multidrug *** recent changes may have an impact on guidelines for management and treatment of SBP in our locality.

The offshore part of the Nile Delta is considered one of the most prolific provinces for gas production andfor future petroleum exploration. Amplitude Variation with Offset (AVO) analysis supported by composite logs considered as one of the best-advanced techniques enables the interpreter to understand theseismic data. It is used to generate a new view of the output results, especially for the identification of gaszones as gas channels by using pre-stack AVO attributes that based on the intercept product gradient(A*B) and the Scaled Poisson’s Ratio Change. Free gas, regardless of the percentage show obvious AVOanomaly. Well log data, including gamma-ray, resistivity, and Vp sonic logs are used in the seismic data towell tie and in the generation of the synthetic seismogram. Seismic data conditioning processes withcheck-shot correction is performed to improve the resolution of the reflection events and signal to noiseratio. AVO attributes technique, as a direct hydrocarbon indicator, including AVO gradient analysis andAVO crossplot separate the gas levels in the sand-shale sequences. The identified gas-bearing zonesconsistent with well log data responses. As the main conclusion, we show the visual evidence for the gasbearing zones by interpreting different AVO responses due to the changes in fluid and rock types.

Seismic attributes supported by composite logs are the best way that can enable the interpreter to understand seismic data very well and generate a new view of the output *** of the reservoir zone can be enhanced by analyzing wells log data based on Gamma-ray,Resistivity,and Vp sonic logs *** logs of Scarab-1,Scarab-De,Scarab-Da,Scarab-Dd,and Scarab-2 wells indicate the lateral and vertical variation of the gas reservoir in elWastani ***,there are several seismic attributes that can be used to support reservoirs *** enhancement the detection of the hydrocarbon reservoirs,it is important to carefully analyze the 2D seismic data,which in this study will be primarily prepared to enhance seismic attributes results for the identification of gas chimneys,gas zones as channels,enhance stratigraphic and structural *** this article,we have performed data conditioning,quality control and seismic well ties including the preliminary wavelet extractions to get accurate ***,we have extracted of several classes of physical,geometrical and complex attributes as a direct hydrocarbon indicator to identify the gas zones,channels and chimneys and to identify the faults and *** main contribution of this work is to provide a more detailed seismic reflection image supported by several seismic attributes classes and well logs to show a visual and quantitative evidence to identify the gas channels and gas chimneys with improving the detection of the faults and discontinuities.

Restrictive versus Liberal Blood Transfusion Strategies in Egyptian Patients with Esophageal Variceal Bleeding

Background and Study Aim: Esophageal variceal bleeding is a major medical emergency and one of the most important indications for hospital admission and for blood transfusion. However, the safest and the effective blood transfusion strategy is controversial. Here, we studied the safety and the effectiveness of the restrictive versus liberal transfusion strategies in patients with esophageal variceal bleeding. Patients and Methods: The study included 342 patients with esophageal variceal bleeding. Patients were divided into 2 groups: group I (Restrictive strategy) transfusion when the hemoglobin level is ≤7 g/dl and group II (Liberal strategy): transfusion when the hemoglobin level is ≤9 g/dl. All patients were subjected to complete blood counts, liver and kidney profiles, coagulation profile, pelvi-abdominal ultrasonography and upper GI endoscopy. Clinical outcome measures include rebleeding, infection, allergic transfusion reactions thromboembolic events, and mortality. Results: Of all patients admitted to hospital with esophageal variceal bleeding, the number of transfused RBCs units and hospital stay were more in the liberal transfusion strategy. Also, the overall rate of complications was higher in the liberal transfusion strategy (49.7% versus 38.5% in the restrictive transfusion strategy). The most common complications were rebleeding (26.9%) and infection (21.6%). As regard the death rate, 13 cases (7.6%) died in the restrictive transfusion strategy versus 25 cases (14.6%) in the liberal transfusion one. Conclusions: For esophageal variceal bleeding, restrictive transfusion strategy is better than the liberal one as regard cost-effectiveness, risk of complications and hospital stay with no harm and less mortality as compared to liberal strategy.

Ankylosing spondylitis(AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects 1% of the general population. As one of the most severe types of spondyloarthropathy, AS affects the spinal vertebrae and sacroiliac joints, causing debilitating pain and loss of mobility. The goal of this review is to provide an overview of AS, from the pathophysiological changes that occur as the disease progresses, to genetic factors that are involved with its onset. Considering the high prevalence in the population, and the debilitating life changes that occur as a result of the disease, a strong emphasis is placed on the diagnostic imaging methods that are used to detect this condition, as well as several treatment methods that could improve the health of individuals diagnosed with AS.
