Irisin is a myokine that is generated by cleavage of the membrane protein fibronectin type Ⅲ domain-containing protein 5(FNDC5) in response to physical exercise. Studies reveal that irisin/FNDC5 has neuroprotective functions against Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia in the elderly, by improving cognitive function and reducing amyloid-β and tau pathologies as well as neuroinflammation in cell culture or animal models of Alzheimer's disease. Although current and ongoing studies on irisin/FNDC5 show promising results, further mechanistic studies are required to clarify its potential as a meaningful therapeutic target for alleviating Alzheimer's disease. We recently found that irisin treatment reduces amyloid-β pathology by increasing the activity/levels of amyloid-β-degrading enzyme neprilysin secreted from astrocytes. Herein, we present an overview of irisin/FNDC5's protective roles and mechanisms against Alzheimer's disease.

This paper provides a review of methods of assessing a fragmentation weapon’s effectiveness against a point target or an area target with keeping the focus on the necessity of using the Carleton damage function with the correct shape ***,cookie-cutter damage functions are redefined to preserve the shape factor of and to have the same lethal area as the corresponding Carleton damage ***,closed-form solutions of the effectiveness methods are obtained by using those cookie-cutter damage functions and the Carleton damage ***,the closed-form solutions are applied to calculate the probability of damaging a point target and the expected fractional damage to an area target for several attack scenarios by using cookie-cutter damage functions and the Carleton damage functions with different shape *** comparison of the calculation results shows that using cookie-cutter damage functions or the Carleton damage function with a wrong shape factor results in quite significant differences from using the original Carleton damage function with a correct shape factor when weapon’s delivery error deviations are less than or comparable to the lengths of the lethal area and the aim point is far from a *** effectiveness methods improved in this paper will be useful for mission planning utilizing the precision-guided munitions in circumstances where the collateral damage should be reduced.

Next High Performance and Low Power Flash Memory Package Structure

In general, NAND flash memory has advantages in low power consumption, storage capacity, and fast erase/write performance in contrast to NOR flash. But, main drawback of the NAND flash memory is the slow access time for random read operations. Therefore, we proposed the new NAND flash memory package for overcoming this major drawback. We present a high performance and low power NAND flash memory system with a dual cache memory. The proposed NAND flash package consists of two parts, i.e., an NAND flash memory module, and a dual cache module. The new NAND flash memory system can achieve dramatically higher performance and lower power consumption compared with any conventionM NAND-type flash memory module. Our results show that the proposed system can reduce about 78% of write operations into the flash memory cell and about 70% of read operations from the flash memory cell by using only additional 3KB cache space. This value represents high potential to achieve low power consumption and high performance gain.

This paper is concerned with evaluation of various ductile fracture criteria in a general three-dimensional stress state of stress triaxiality, the Lode parameter and the equiva- lent plastic strain to fracture. Evaluation is carried out by comparing fracture loci constructed by fracture criteria to experimental results of A12024-T351. Comparison demonstrates that the Modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion and a newly proposed criterion provide sufficient predictabil- ity of fracture strain. Moreover, evaluation is emphasized on the predicted cut-off value for stress triaxiality. The evaluation demonstrates that the Cockcroft-Latham, Brozzo, Oh, Ko-Huh and the new criteria coupled a reasonable cut-off value for ductile materials.

The Climate Variabilities of Air Temperature Around the Korean Peninsula

In this study, changes in climatological conditions around the KoreanPeninsula are estimated quantitatively using various types of high order statistical analyses. Thetemperature data collected from Incheon station have been analyzed for the assessment of the climatevariation. According to our analysis, the climate changes observed over the Korean Peninsula forthe last century are similar to the global observational data in many respects. First of all, thewarming trend [+1.5℃ (100 yr)^(-1)] and the overall evolving pattern throughout the century axequite similar to each other. The temperature change in the Korean Peninsula is about two to threetimes larger than that of the global scale which may partially be ascribed to the influence ofurbanization at mid and high latitudes. In this work, a new Winter Monsoon Index (WMI) is suggestedbased on the European continental scale circulation index (EU1) pattern. Our WMI is defined as thenormalized sea level pressure (SLP) difference in the winter period between the centers of the EastSea and west of Lake Baikal in Siberia, the two eastern centers of the EU1 action patterns. A strongsimilarity is found between the time series of the WMI and surface air temperature at Incheon. TheWMI has decreased gradually since the 1920s but has shifted to a rapid increasing trend in the lasttwo decades; it was in fact accompanied by a weakening of the Siberian High and a decreasing of thenortherly during winter. Our findings of the close correlations between the surface air temperatureat Incheon and the WMI strongly indicate that our newly suggested index is unique and can be used asan efficient tool to predict climate variability in Korea.

The objective of this study was to verify the effect of fiber grid reinforcement on the longterm performance of asphalt overlay pavements by performing field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis. Crack, rutting, roughness, and other miscellaneous distresses of fiber-grid-reinforced overlay sections and ordinary overlay sections were compared. Pavement conditions of fiber grid overlay sections before and after the overlay were also compared. Cores were obtained from the fiber-grid-reinforced and ordinary sections to measure bonding shear strength between the intermediate and overlay *** energy, displacement after yield, and shear stiffness of the cores were also obtained by analyzing the test results. Finite element analysis was performed by using the test results to validate the effect of the fiber grid reinforcement on the long-term performance of asphalt overlay pavements. Rutting and fatigue cracking were predicted for three cases: 1) fiber grid was not used;2) glass fiber grid was used;and 3) carbon fiber grid was used. The cracking ratio of fiber-grid-reinforced sections was much smaller than that of ordinary sections. The results of field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis showed that the fiber grid reinforcement improved the long-term performance of asphalt overlay pavements.

We consider the problem of complex root classification,i.e.,finding the conditions on the coefficients of a univariate polynomial for all possible multiplicity structures on its complex *** is well known that such conditions can be written as conjunctions of several polynomial equalities and one inequality in the *** polynomials in the coefficients are called discriminants for *** is also known that discriminants can be obtained using repeated parametric greatest common *** resulting discriminants are usually nested determinants,i.e.,determinants of matrices whose entries are determinants,and so *** this paper,we give a new type of discriminant that is not based on repeated greatest common *** new discriminants are simpler in the sense that they are non-nested determinants and have smaller maximum degrees.
