Exaggerated male pheromones in rats may increase predation cost

Male animals with more conspicuous visual and acoustic signals increase their mating success, but also increase the risk of being attacked by eavesdropping predators. In rodents, males with richer sex pheromones often have higher attractiveness to females, but whether or not the males are also at higher predation risk is poorly known. Here, we used 2 laboratory inbred strains of the rat Rattus norvegicus, Brown Norway （BN） and Lewis （LEW）, and wild-captured rats as odor donors to assess the relationship between the pheromone levels in male rats and attractiveness to domes- tic cats Felis catus. LEW rats had significantly higher levels of male pheromones （e.g., 4-heptanone, 2-heptanone, and 9-hydroxy-2-nonanone） than BN rats. Simultaneously, wild-captured male rats were selectively assigned to 2 groups （HIGH or LOW） based on pheromone content as determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry （GC-MS）. Binary choice tests were carried out during the night in the test room. We found that cats spent more time investigating male bedding and urine of LEW rats than the counterpart of BN rats. Likewise, cats also preferred bedding and urine odor of the HIGH wild rats compared with the counterparts of LOW wild rats. Adding synthetic ana- logs of the 3 pheromone ketones into the urine of either BN rats or LOW wild rats significantly increased their attractiveness to cats. Our data suggest that the rats with exaggerated male phero- mones more strongly attracted predators and thus as a consequence may suffer from elevated pre- dation risk.

Background The increasing population of diabetes mellitus in adolescent girls and women of childbearing age contributes to a large number of pregnancies with maternal pregestational diabetes *** heart diseases are a common adverse outcome in mothers with pregestational diabetes ***,there is little systematic information between maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus and congenital heart diseases in the *** sources Literature selection was performed in *** hundred and seven papers were cited in our review,includ-ing 36 clinical studies,26 experimental studies,31 reviews,eight meta-analysis articles,and six of other *** Maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus poses a high risk of congenital heart diseases in the offspring and causes variety of phenotypes of congenital heart *** such as persistent maternal hyperglycemia,oxidative stress,polymorphism of uncoupling protein 2,polymorphism of adiponectin gene,Notch 1 pathway,Nkx2.5 disorders,dysregula-tion of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1,and viral etiologies are associated with the occurrence of congenital heart diseases in the offspring of mothers with pregestational diabetes *** options including blood sugar-reducing,anti-oxidative stress drug supplements and exercise can help to prevent maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus from inducing congenital heart *** Our review contributes to a better understanding of the association between maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus and congenital heart diseases in the offspring and to a profound thought of the mechanism,preventive and therapeutic measurements of congenital heart diseases caused by maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus.

Al_(1-x)Sc_(x)Sb_(y)N_(1-y):An opportunity for ferroelectric semiconductor field effect transistor

For the in-memory computation architecture,a ferroelectric semiconductor field-effect transistor(FeSFET)incorporates ferroelectric material into the FET channel to realize logic and memory in a single *** emerging groupⅢnitride material Al_(1-x)Sc_(x)N provides an excellent platform to explore FeSFET,as this material has significant electric polarization,ferroelectric switching,and high carrier ***,steps need to be taken to reduce the large band gap of~5 eV of Al_(1-x)Sc_(x)N to improve its transport property for in-memory logic *** state-of-the-art first principles analysis,here we predict that alloying a relatively small amount(less than~5%)of Sb impurities into Al_(1-x)Sc_(x)N very effectively reduces the band gap while maintaining excellent *** show that the co-doped Sb and Sc act cooperatively to give a significant band bowing leading to a small band gap of~1.76 eV and a large polarization parameter~0.87 C/m^(2),in the quaternary Al_(1-x)Sc_(x)Sb_(y)N_(1-y)*** Sb impurity states become more continuous as a result of interactions with Sc and can be used for impurity-mediated *** on the Landau-Khalatnikov model,the Landau parameters and the corresponding ferroelectric hysteresis loops are obtained for the quaternary *** findings indicate that Al_(1-x)Sc_(x)Sb_(y)N_(1-y)is an excellent candidate as the channel material of FeSFET.

Density functional theory study of B- and Si-doped carbons and their adsorption interactions with sulfur compounds

Understanding the adsorption interactions between carbon materials and sulfur compounds has far-reaching impacts,in addition to their well-known important role in energy storage and conversion,such as lithium-ion *** this paper,properties of intrinsic B or Si single-atom doped,and B-Si codoped graphene(GR)and graphdiyne(GDY)were investigated by using density functional theory-based calculations,in which the optimal doping configurations were explored for potential applications in adsorbing sulfur *** showed that both B or Si single-atom doping and B-Si codoping could substantially enhance the electron transport properties of GR and GDY,improving their surface ***,B and Si atoms displayed synergistic effects for the codoped configurations,where B-Si codoped GR/GDY exhibited much better performance in the adsorption of sulfurcontaining chemicals than single-atom doped *** addition,results demonstrated that,after B-Si codoping,the adsorption energy and charge transfer amounts of GDY with sulfur compounds were much larger than those of GR,indicating that B-Si codoped GDY might be a favorable material for more effectively interacting with sulfur reagents.

Heat transfer and temperature evolution in underground mininginduced overburden fracture and ground fissures: Optimal time window of UAV infrared monitoring

Heat transfer and temperature evolution in overburden fracture and ground fissures are one of the essential topics for the identification of ground fissures via unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) infrared imager. In this study, discrete element software UDEC was employed to investigate the overburden fracture field under different mining conditions. Multiphysics software COMSOL were employed to investigate heat transfer and temperature evolution of overburden fracture and ground fissures under the influence of mining condition, fissure depth, fissure width, and month alternation. The UAV infrared field measurements also provided a calibration for numerical simulation. The results showed that for ground fissures connected to underground goaf(Fissure Ⅰ), the temperature difference increased with larger mining height and shallow buried depth. In addition, Fissure Ⅰ located in the boundary of the goaf have a greater temperature difference and is easier to be identified than fissures located above the mining goaf. For ground fissures having no connection to underground goaf(Fissure Ⅱ), the heat transfer is affected by the internal resistance of the overlying strata fracture when the depth of Fissure Ⅱ is greater than10 m, the temperature of Fissure Ⅱ gradually equals to the ground temperature as the fissures’ depth increases, and the fissures are difficult to be identified. The identification effect is most obvious for fissures larger than 16 cm under the same depth. In spring and summer, UAV infrared identification of mining fissures should be carried out during nighttime. This study provides the basis for the optimal time and season for the UAV infrared identification of different types of mining ground fissures.

Metal-free carbon,as the most representative heterogeneous metal-free catalysts,have received considerable interests in electro-and thermo-catalytic reac-tions due to their impressive performance and *** the past decade,well-designed carbon catalysts with tunable structures and heteroatom groups coupled with various characterization techniques have proposed numerous reaction ***,active sites,key intermediate species,precise structure-activity relationships and dynamic evolution processes of carbon catalysts are still rife with controversies due to the monotony and limitation of used experimental *** this Review,we sum-marize the extensive efforts on model catalysts since the 2000s,particularly in the past decade,to overcome the influences of material and structure limitations in metal-free carbon *** both nanomolecule model and bulk model,the real contribution of each alien species,defect and edge configuration to a series of fundamentally important reactions,such as thermocatalytic reactions,electrocatalytic reactions,were systematically *** with in situ techniques,isotope labeling and size control,the detailed reaction mechanisms,the precise 2D structure-activity relationships and the rate-determining steps were revealed at a molecular ***,the outlook of model carbon catalysis has also been proposed in this work.

Enhanced corrosion resistance of epoxy resin coating via addition of CeO_(2) and benzotriazole

The use of fillers to enhance the corrosion protection of epoxy resins has been widely *** this work,cerium dioxide(CeO_(2))and benzotriazole(BTA)were introduced into an epoxy resin to enhance the corrosion resistance of Q235 carbon *** electron microscopy results indicated that the CeO_(2) grains were rod-like and ellipsoidal in shape,and the distribution pattern of BTA was analyzed by energy dispersive *** dynamic potential polarization curve proved the excellent corrosion resistance of the composite epoxy resin with CeO_(2) and BTA co-addition,and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test analysis indicated the significantly enhanced long-term corrosion protection performance of the composite *** the optimal protective performance was provided by the coating containing 0.3%(mass)CeO_(2) and 20%(mass)BTA,which was attributed to the barrier performance of CeO_(2) particles and the chemical barrier effect of *** formation of corrosion products was analyzed using X-ray *** addition,the corrosion resistance mechanism of the coating was also discussed in detail.

GPU-accelerated OCT imaging: Real-time data processing and artifact suppression for enhanced monitoring of 3D bioprinted tissues and vascular-like networks

Optical coherence tomography(OCT)imaging technology has significant advantages in in situ and noninvasive monitoring of biological ***,it still faces the following challenges:including data processing speed,image quality,and improvements in three-dimensional(3D)visualization *** technology,especially functional imaging techniques like optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA),requires a long acquisition time and a large data *** the substantial increase in the acquisition speed of swept source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT),it still poses significant challenges for data ***,during in situ acquisition,image artifacts resulting from interface reflections or strong reflections from biological tissues and culturing containers present obstacles to data visualization and further ***,a customized frequency domainfilter with anti-banding suppression parameters was designed to suppress artifact ***,this study proposed a graphics processing unit(GPU)-based real-time data processing pipeline for SS-OCT,achieving a measured line-process rate of 800 kHz for 3D fast and high-quality data ***,a GPU-based realtime data processing for CC-OCTA was integrated to acquire dynamic ***,a vascular-like network chip was prepared using extrusion-based 3D printing and sacrificial materials,with sacrificial material being printed at the desired vascular network locations and then removed to form the vascular-like *** imaging technology was used to monitor the progression of sacrificial material removal and vascular-like network ***,GPU-based OCT enables real-time processing and visualization with artifact suppression,making it particularly suitable for in situ noninvasive longitudinal monitoring of 3D bioprinting tissue and vascular-like networks in microfluidic chips.
