Objective: To investigate the effect of Gymnema sylvestre extract(GS) on initial anti-obesity, liver injury, and glucose homeostasis induced by a high-fat diet(HFD). Methods: The dry powder of GS was extracted with methanol, and gymnemic acid was identified by high performance liquid chromatography as deacyl gymnemic acid. Male C57BL/6J mice that fed on either a normal diet, normal diet containing 1 g/kg GS(CON+GS) HFD, or HFD containing 1.0 g/kg GS(HFD+GS) for 4 weeks were used to test the initial anti-obesity effect of GS. Body weight gain and food intake, and serum levels about lipid and liver injury markers were measured. Histopathology of adipose tissue and liver stained with hematoxylin and eosin(H&E) and oil-red O were analyzed. After 4 weeks of GS extract feeding, intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test(IPGTT) was performed. Results: The methanol extracts of GS exerted significant anti-obesity effects in HFD+GS group. They decreased body weight gain, a lower food and energy efficiency ratio, and showed lower serum levels of total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), low-density lipoprotein(LDL)-cholesterol, very-low density lipoprotein(VLDL)-cholesterol and leptin compared with the HFD group. The decreases of abdominal as well as epididymal fat weight and adipocyte hypertrophy, lipid droplets in liver, and serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and alanine transaminase(ALT) were also observed. The CON+GS group showed an effect of glucose homeostasis compared to the CON group. Conclusions: This study shows that GS provide the possibility as a key role in an initial anti-obesity effects feeding with a HFD.

Information on habitat use is critical in sizing protected areas for endangered reptile species. To investigate habitat use, home range, and hibernaculum of the endangered Mongolian Racerunner(Eremias argus), we radio-tracked 40 specimens in a coastal sand dune in South Korea. Of the 163 locations recorded during the breeding season, 150(92.0%) were in grass sand dunes, and the rest(8.0%), all associated with the same lizard, were in shrub sand dunes. All of the 123 locations recorded during the non-breeding season were in grass sand dunes. No lizards were found in the grasslands abutting the dunes. The four lizards with identifiable hibernation sites were found under an average of 17.8 cm of sand and were all located in grass sand dunes. The lizards moved approximately 5 m daily and used 162 m2of home range(computed by minimum convex polygon, MCP) during the breeding season, and they moved approximately 2 m and used 68 m2of home range during the non-breeding season. However, the mean daily moved distances and MCP home ranges were not statistically significantly different between the seasons or between males and females. Our results suggest that in coastal sand dunes, E. argus uses grass sand dunes as its main habitat throughout the year. This finding could be used to determine the appropriate habitat size and to designate for the conservation of this endangered species.

Sex-specific effects of social networks on the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension among older Korean adults

Background Hypertension is a common chronic disease among older adults, and is associated with medical complications and mor- tality. This study aimed to examine the effects of social network characteristics on the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension among older adults. Methods The Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project （KSHAP） interviewed 814 〉 60-year-old residents and their spouses from a rural township between December 2011 and March 2012 （response rate： 95%）. We evaluated the data from 595 partici- pants. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the effects of network characteristics on hypertension. Results We ob- served strong sex-specific network effects on the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension. Among older women, network density was associated with hypertension awareness [odds ratio （OR）： 2.63, 95% confidence interval （CI）： 1.03 5.37J and control （OR： 1.72; 95% CI 0.94-3.13）. Among older men, large networks were associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension （OR： 0.75; 95% CI： 0.58-0.96）. Compared to older women, older men with coarse networks exhibited better hypertension awareness （OR： 0.37; 95% CI： 0.14-0.95） and control （OR： 0.42; 95% CI： 0.19-0.91 ）. Network size interacted with density for hypertension control （P = 0.051）, with controlled hyperten- sion being associated with large and course networks. Conclusions A large network was associated with a lower risk for hypertension, and a coarse network was associated with hypertension awareness and control among older men. Older women with dense networks were most likely to exhibit hypertension awareness and control.

Bone diseases such as osteoporosis and periodontitis are induced by excessive osteoclastic activity,which is closely associated with ***(BA)has been used as a cytokine-suppressive or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines or ***,its role in osteoclast differentiation and function remains ***,we explored the role of BA in regulating osteoclast differentiation and elucidated the underlying *** inhibited osteoclast differentiation and strongly suppressed interleukin-1β(IL-1β)*** inhibited osteoclast formation and bone resorption when added to bone marrowderived macrophages and differentiated osteoclasts,and the inhibitory effect was reversed by IL-1β*** reporter assay and the inhibitor study of IL-1βtranscription suggested that BA inhibited nuclear factor-κB and activator protein-1 by regulating IκB kinase,extracellular signal regulated kinase and P38,resulting in the down-regulation of IL-1β*** also promoted osteoblast ***,BA protected lipopolysaccharide-and ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice,suggesting therapeutic potential against inflammation-induced bone diseases and postmenopausal osteoporosis.

This study investigates the interannual variation of summer surface air temperature over Northeast Asia（NEA） and its associated circulation *** leading modes for the temperature variability over NEA are obtained by EOF *** first EOF mode is characterized by a homogeneous temperature anomaly over NEA and therefore is called the NEA *** anomaly extends from southeast of Lake Baikal to Japan,with a central area in Northeast *** second EOF mode is characterized by a seesaw pattern,showing a contrasting distribution between East Asia（specifically including the Changbai Mountains in Northeast China,Korea,and Japan） and north of this *** mode is named the East Asia（EA） *** modes contribute equivalently to the temperature variability in *** two leading modes are associated with different circulation anomalies.A warm NEA mode is associated with a positive geopotential height anomaly over NEA and thus a weakened upper-tropospheric westerly *** the other hand,a warm EA mode is related to a positive height anomaly over EA and a northward displaced *** addition,the NEA mode tends to be related to the Eurasian teleconnection pattern,while the EA mode is associated with the East Asia-Pacific/PacificJapan pattern.

Nanoscaled spin-dependent tunnelling lines were patterned on doped Si and studied for tunnelling from the SDT ferromagnetic layer through an insulating barrier into Si. The injection contacts have the form of long strips with width and separation, ranging from 100 nm to 2 μm, and are patterned using e-beam lithography. The measured I-V characteristics versus temperature （80 to 300K） on the 100 nm scaled devices between the layered-magnetic metals and the semiconductor clearly showed ballistic tunnelling, with weak dependence on the temperature. This is qualitatively different, at elevated temperatures, from 2-μm-wide scaled-up spin-dependent tunnelling structures, where thermal-ionic emission was observed to dominate carrier transport.

Applications of a novel curve-fitting technique are presented to efficiently predict the motion of the vortex filament, which is trailed from a rigid body such as wings and rotors. The gov- erning equations of the motion, when a Lagrangian approach with the present curve-fitting method is applied, can be transformed into an easily solvable form of the system of nonlinear ordinary dif- ferential equations. The applicability of Bezier curves, B-spline, and Lagrange interpolating polyno- mials is investigated. Local Lagrange interpolating polynomials with a shift operator are proposed as the best selection for applications, since it provides superior system characteristics with minimum computing time, compared to other methods. In addition, the Gauss quadrature formula with local refinement strategy has been developed for an accurate prediction of the induced velocity computed with the line integration of the Biot-Savart law. Rotary-wing problems including a vortex ring problem are analyzed to show the efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility in the applications of the pro- posed method.

Building performance simulation has been adopted to support decision making in the building life *** essential issue is to ensure a building energy simulation model can capture the reality and complexity of buildings and their systems in both the static characteristics and dynamic *** energy model calibration is a technique that takes various types of measured performance data(e.g.,energy use)and tunes key model parameters to match the simulated results with the actual *** study performed an application and evaluation of an automated pattern-based calibration method on commercial building models that were generated based on characteristics of real buildings.A public building dataset that includes high-level building attributes(e.g.,building type,vintage,total floor area,number of stories,zip code)of 111 buildings in San Francisco,California,USA,was used to generate building models in *** level energy use calibrations were then conducted by comparing building model results against the actual buildings’monthly electricity and natural gas *** results showed 57 out of 111 buildings were successfully calibrated against actual buildings,while the remaining buildings showed opportunities for future calibration *** to the pattern-based model calibration method are identified to expand its use for:(1)central heating,ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC)systems with chillers,(2)space heating and hot water heating with electricity sources,(3)mixed-use building types,and(4)partially occupied buildings.

The cement dispersion performance of a polycarboxylate(PCE)-based superplasticizer is highly related to their adsorption behaviors as a function of *** study evaluated effects of PCEs on rheological properties of cementitious ***,characteristics of PCEs were characterized via permeation chromatography(GPC)and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry(FT-IR).The adsorption behavior of single and blended PCEs on cementitious composites was identified using total organic carbon analyzer(TOC).Based on the measurement of PCE adsorption,the changes of rheological properties of cementitious materials as well as the number of dispersed cement particles were characterized using a rheometer and laser spectroscopy,*** experimental results support the systematic mechanism of PCE adsorption,cement dispersion,and the decrease in viscosity of cementitious materials.
