Retrospective survey of avian influenza H5N1 infection in Northern Vietnam by using a combinational serologic assay

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus have occurred in Vietnam since 2003. However, how people got avian H5N1 infection in Northern Vietnam is still unclear. We therefore performed a combination of the serologic assays H5N1 ELISA and H5 western blot to detect anti-H5N1 specific antibodies. Sera samples of 149 subjects with suspected H5N1 infection from three provinces of Northern Vietnam were collected from September 2006 to March 2007. Our results indicated that this combinational assay showed high sensitivity (100%) and specificity (95%) when compared with hemagglutinin inhibition (HI) assay. Fifty-one sera samples (34.2%) contained specific antibodies against H5N1 viruses. Poultry raisers (32/77;41.6%) showed higher H5N1 infection rates than slaughterers (12/41;29.3%) and health care workers (7/31;22.6%). Contact history with sick or dead poultry in household or slaughter-house (p < 0.05) and lack of protective equipment use when in contact with dead poultry (p < 0.05) were risk factors found to be associated with H5N1 infection. In this study, we established an alternative serologic assay for H5N1 diagnosis, and we hereby present seroepidemiologic data of H5N1 infection in Northern Vietnam.

Formulation Optimization Utilizing D-Optimal Experimental Design of Oral Capsules Containing Enteric-Coated Pellets of Lansoprazole andin vivo Bioequivalence

An optimized formulation of capsules containing Lansoprazole enteric-coated pellets using D-Optimal design with a polynomial statistical model were prepared by using Eudragit?L100 as an enteric coated polymer to provide resistance to simulated gastric acid dissolution in buffer media. D-Optimal experimental design was used to determine the optimal level for three coating layers that were applied to formulate the enteric-coated pellets including a drug loading layer, a sub-coating, and an outer enteric coating. Dissolution studies were performed on the prepared Lansoprazole capsules. Less than 5 percent of Lansoprazole was released in 60 minutes in an acidic dissolution medium (pH 1.2) and greater than 90 percent of active ingredient was released in the next 60 minutes in a buffer dissolution medium (pH 6.8). The Lansoprazole capsules were stable with no observable change in physico-chemical properties in accelerated and normal storage conditions for 6 and 18 months, respectively. The pharmacokinetic parameters Cmax, Tmax, AUC0-t, and AUC0-∞ were determined after administration of the D-Optimal design optimized capsules of LPZ to healthy beagle dogs and were statistically compared to Gastevin? capsules as a reference (KRKA, Slovenia) using the non-compartmental method with the aid of WinNonlin 5.2 software. The analysis of variance showed that the two formulations did not demonstrate bioequivalence using a 90% confidence interval range (80% - 120%) of Cmax, AUC0-t, and AUC0-∞. No significant difference in Tmax was found at the 0.95 significance level using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. D-Optimal Experimental Design provided definitive direction for an optimal formulation of capsules containing enteric-coated pellets of lansoprazole loaded within the coating of pellets that provided similar bioequivalence to Gastevin.

Background In Viet Nam,tuberculosis(TB)represents a devastating life-event with an exorbitant price tag,partly due to lost income from daily directly observed therapy in public sector ***,persons with TB may seek care in the private sector for its flexibility,convenience,and *** study aimed to measure income changes,costs and catastrophic cost incurrence among TB-affected households in the public and private *** Between October 2020 and March 2022,we conducted 110 longitudinal patient cost interviews,among 50 patients privately treated for TB and 60 TB patients treated by the National TB Program(NTP)in Ha Noi,Hai Phong and Ho Chi minh City,Viet *** a local adaptation of the WHO TB patient cost survey tool,participants were interviewed during the intensive phase,continuation phase and *** compared income levels,direct and indirect treatment costs,catastrophic costs using Wilcoxon rank-sum and chi-squared tests and associated risk factors between the two cohorts using multivariate *** The pre-treatment median monthly household income was significantly higher in the private sector versus NTP cohort(USD 868 vs USD 578;P=0.010).However,private sector treatment was also significantly costlier(USD 2075 vs USD 1313;P=0.005),driven by direct medical costs which were 4.6 times higher than costs reported by NTP participants(USD 754 vs USD 164;P<0.001).This resulted in no significant difference in catastrophic costs between the two cohorts(Private:55%vs NTP:52%;P=0.675).Factors associated with catastrophic cost included being a single-person household[adjusted odds ratio[(a OR=13.71;95%confidence interval(CI):1.36-138.14;P=0.026)],unemployment during treatment(a OR=10.86;95%CI:2.64-44.60;P<0.001)and experiencing TB-related stigma(a OR=37.90;95%CI:1.72-831.73;P=0.021)].Conclusions Persons with TB in Viet Nam face similarly high risk of catastrophic costs whether treated in the public or private *** costs coul

A New Approach for Heavy N-Doping Process in Ge Epilayers Using Specific Solid Source

As an indirect band gap material, Germanium (Ge) has low efficiency of radiative recombination in the wavelength area of about 1550 nm. However, the difference between the direct and indirect band gap is very small (~140 meV) and photoluminescence emission ability of Ge could be greatly enhanced by heavy n-doping process. In this work, Ge growth directly on Si (001) substrate by molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) technique and a high n-doping level in Ge was obtained owning to using GaP decomposition source. The GaP solid source produces P2 molecules instead of P4 molecules, which have higher sticking coefficient than that of P4 comparing to the traditional doping method from PH3 gas precursor molecules. The dependence of optical property on Ge film thickness is also studied. The out-diffusion phenomenon of phosphorus dopant has been observed through SIMS profile analysis. An activated phosphorus concentration can be achieved up to more than 2 × 1019 atoms?cm&minus3 confirmed by Hall effect measurement. This result contributes to realization of Ge-on-Si devices for optoelectronic applications.

This study was conducted to provide a comprehensive database of shoot density and biomass characteristics of seagrass beds in several coastal waters in Central *** survey process of the characteristics related to shoot density and biomass of seagrass beds was carried out mainly in the dry season(from April to September)during the period from *** data were collected at six sampling locations in Lang Co lagoon,Thua Thien Hue Province;five sampling locations at Cua Dai estuary in Quang Nam Province and Van Phong bay,Khanh hoa Province;and finally in Ly Son MPA(Marine Protected Area)with nine sampling *** characteristics of shoot density collected through the field surveys obtained the difference in the Central Coast ***(Dry Weight)biomass of seagrass in Lang Co lagoon and Cua Dai estuary reached 76.56±52.38(g DW)/m2 and 53.21±57.66(g DW/m2),respectively dominated by Thalassia hemprichii and Halodule pinifolia in Lang Co lagoon and Cua Dai Estuary,*** rate of above-and below-ground biomass was *** species tended to grow below-ground part compared to above-ground *** study results would be a significant database on environmental informatics to promote the sustainable management of seagrass resources in the central coastal areas of Vietnam.

Nexus between CO₂ Emissions and Economic Growth, Industrial Production, and Foreign Direct Investment in Vietnam: Symmetric ARDL Approach

Vietnam’s economy has been developing strongly in recent years;however, it is necessary to examine the impact of its economic activities on environmental quality. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic growth, industrial production, and foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam. The ARDL estimation was used to process the dataset from World Bank. Results showed that economic growth, industrial production, and FDI have an impact on CO2 emissions in the long run in Vietnam. Granger Causality test also indicated that there is a causal relationship between economic growth, industrial production, and CO2 emissions in Vietnam from 1990 to 2018, at 5% statistical significance level. Proposed solutions to reduce CO2 emissions but still promote economic growth toward the green growth orientation and zero carbon target attainment are as follows: 1) reduce the use of fossil energy in industrial manufacturing and replace it by renewable energy sources;2) use modern technology for all production sectors in economy;and 3) develop a legal framework for FDI projects selection and choose foreign investors with modern and low carbon emission technology.

In this paper, compounds identified in the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of the leaves of Cinnamomum glaucescens (Nees) Hand.-Mazz and Cinnamomum verum J.S. Presl (Lauraceae family) of Vietnam origin are reported. The chemical analyses were performed using gas chromatography-flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The significant compounds of C. glaucescens were geraniol (36.2%) and terpinen-4-ol (19.7%). On the other hand, C. verum comprised of linalool (22.0%) and bicyclogermacrene (11.2%). The present results may represent new chemotypes of the essential oils of C. verum and C. glaucescens.
