Recent Progress in Plasma Control Studies on the Improvement of Plasma Performance in Heliotron J

Recent progress in plasma control studies on the improvement of plasma performance in Heliotron J is reviewed. The supersonic molecular beam injection （SMBI） fueling is successfully applied to Heliotron J plasma. A supersonic H2-beam is effectively injected to increase fueling efficiency and generate a peaked density profile. Local fueling with a short-pulsed SMBI can increase the core plasma density and avoid the degradation arising from edge cooling. Second harmonic electron cyclotron current drive （ECCD） experiments were conducted by launching a focused Gaussian beam with a parallel refractive index of -0.05 ≤ Nil 〈 0.6. Results show that the electron cyclotron （EC） driven current is determined not only by Nil but also by local magnetic field （B） structure where the EC power is deposited. Detailed analysis of the observed NI and B dependences is in progress with a ray-tracing simulation using the TRAVIS code. Fast ion velocity distribution was investigated using fast protons generated by ion cyclotron resonant frequency （ICRF） minority heating. For the standard configuration in Heliotron J, charge ex- change neutral particle analysis （CX-NPA） measurements show higher effective temperature of fast minority protons in the on-axis resonance case compared to that in the HFS （high field side） off-axis resonance case. However, the increase in bulk ion temperature in the HFS resonance case is larger than that in the on-axis resonance.

Effects of Neuroticism on Partial and Whole Body Reactions under Stress

Effects of neuroticism on partial and whole body reaction times were investigated under stress, or choking conditions in student participants （N = 127）. We measured simple and choice reaction times of parts of the body and choice reaction times of the whole body in the participants with high and low neuroticism such as depression, cyclic tendency, inferiority feelings, and nervousness under the controlled stress scenario of being in front of people. Results indicated significant differences in reaction times of partial body, discriminative decisions and choice reaction times of participants in the high neuroticism group. Results of whole body reaction times were opposite to that of partial body reactions. However, a two-way factorial analysis of variance indicated neither a significant main effect, nor interactions between reaction times and personality traits. Whole body reactions suggest that the effects of stimulus transduction process from motor commands to motor outputs via motor neurons has a greater effect in the central nervous system than recognition and decision-making. However, it is possible that changes in the intracortical mechanisms related to cognitions and emotions could be correlated in partial body movements with nearly no muscular activity. Our findings suggested that delays indiscrimination, decision-making, and choice times could affect the performance of individuals.

Clinical study of metachronous multiple oral cancers.

Purpose:To clinically study the background of metachronous multiple oral cancers encountered at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Hirosaki University Hospital. Methods: A total of 9 patients with metachronous multiple oral cancers treated between 1996 and 2007 were included. Results: There were 3 males and 6 females, ranging from 66 to 79 years old with an average age of 71.2 years. The location of primary cancers were as follow: tongue, 2 cases (22.2%); mesopharyngeal, 3 cases (33.3%); and buccalmucosa, hard palate, upper and lower gingival, 1 case (11.1%) respectively. Eight cases were categorized as T1NOM0 and 1 case was termed as T2NOM0 in TNM classification. Four patients consumed alcohol while 3 were smokers. The average time elapsed between the detection of the first cancer and the appearance of the second was 63 months. Histologically, 6 were diagnosed as well differentiated squamous cell carcinomas, 1 was diagnosed as verrucous carcinoma and 2 were unknown. Conclusion:

Concurrent chemoradiation with intra-arterial docetaxel-nedaplatin for advanced oral cancers

Purpose: To evaluate the effect and complication of concurrent chemoradiation with intra-arterial docetaxel-nedaplatin infusion。Methods: Fourteen patients with advanced oral cancers were treated between 2003 and 2007 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Hirosaki University Hospital。A total of 66Gy of external beam was irradiated for a period of seven weeks concurrent with two or three courses of intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy using a combination of docetaxel (40mg/mm2) and nedaplatin (80mg/mm2)。Treatment effect was evaluated by computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography-CT (PET-CT)。Results: Thirteen out of fourteen patients (93%) were evaluated as complete response。The rate of gradeⅢtoⅣchemotoxicity was 93%。All patients developed reversible mucositis and dermatitis but the major adverse effects were leucopenia and alopecia。There has been no central nervous system complication related to the infusion technique。Two years survival rate was 72.9% with a median follow-up duration of 11 months。Conclusions: Intra-arterial docetaxel-nedaplatin infusion concurrent with radiotherapy is an effective treatment for advanced oral cancers but severe。complication is a problem that needs to be solved。
