Balloon-occluded transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization(TACE) is widely accepted as a treatment for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) in the intermediate stage according to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer(BCLC) guidelines. Recently, balloon-occluded TACE(B-TACE) was developed in Japan. Despite the lack of a clear definition, B-TACE is generally defined as the infusion of emulsion of chemotherapeutic agents with lipiodol followed by gelatin particles under the occlusion of feeding arteries by a microballoon catheter, which leads to the dense lipiodol emulsion(LE) accumulation in HCC nodules. This phenomenon cannot be explained only by the prevention of proximal migration and leakage of embolization materials; it further involves causing local changes in the hemodynamics of the surrounding occlusion artery and targeted HCC nodules. Balloon-occluded arterial stump pressure plays an important role in the dense LE accumulation in targeted HCC nodules. Although randomized controlled trials comparing the therapeutic effect and the prognosis of B-TACE to those of the other TACE procedures, such as conventional-TACE and drug-eluting beads TACE, are still lacking, B-TACE is thought to be a promising treatment. The purpose of this review is to summarize the mechanism, therapeutic effect, indication, prognosis and complications of BTACE.

It is necessary to take measures against infectious diseases in the Southeast Asian prawn farming industry. In giant tiger prawn （Penaeus monodon） aquaculture, diseases caused by viruses such as white spot syndrome virus （WSSV） and bacteria such as Vibrio have become a menace. Appropriate treatments of prawn culture pond＇s waters are advocated for preventing and controlling pathogens. The purpose of this study was to conduct an antimicrobial water treatment using a low-voltage pulsed electric field sterilization. Here we prepared a mechanical low-voltage pulsed electric field system with copper wire coiling around a titanium ring. The viability of WSSV in seawater was examined by prawn infectivity experiments. We inoculated healthy prawns （approximately 10-15 g） with the WSSV master sample that passed 0-3 times through the system. WSSV infection in prawns decreased according to the number of passes through the system. Healthy prawns survived for〉 10 days without feeding, where as prawns inoculated with the WSSV master sample showed symptoms of white spot and died in about 4 days. Two-thirds of the prawns inoculated with the WSSV master sample that was passed once through the system developed WSSV symptoms and were polymerase chain reaction （PCR） positive. However, no symptoms were observed and prawns were PCR negative when the WSSV master sample was passed three times through the system. Based on these results, we purpose that a low-voltage pulsed electric field system will serve as an efficient pond drainage sterilization system and will replace conventional treatments using chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite.

A Transparent Polyimide Film as a Biological Cell Culture Sheet with Microstructures

The research on stem cell cultures has attracted much attention due to the recent development of regenerative medicine. Therefore, higher functionalities for devices used for culturing cells are strongly demanded. In this study, we fabricated cell culture sheets using transparent polyimide (PI), parylene (PA), and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to make polymer materials that had microstructures. We then cultured stromal marrow cells (OP9) on them and investigated the cell alignment within the microstructures. Hot embossing was used to fabricate the microstructures with a width and depth of 5 μm on the polymer substrates. Cultivation of the cells was confirmed on the transparent PI and PA sheets, however, it was not observed on the PEEK sheet. Slight alignment of the cells was also observed along with the microstructures.

New materials for combating bacteria-caused infection and promoting the formation of microvascular networks during wound healing are of vital *** antibiotics can be used to prevent infection,treatments that can disinfect and accelerate wound healing are ***,we engineer a coating that is both highly compatible with current wound dressing substrates and capable of simultaneously disinfecting and revascularizing wounds using a metal-phenolic nanoplatform containing an alloyed nanostructured architecture(Ag@Cu-MPNNC).The alloyed nanostructure is formed by the spontaneous co-reduction and catalytic disproportionation reaction of multiple metal ions on a foundation metal-phenolic supramolecular *** synergistic presence of metals greatly improves the antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria,while demonstrating negligible cytotoxicity to normal *** infected rat models,the Ag@Cu-MPNNC could kill bacteria efficiently,promoting revascularization and accelerate wound closure with no adverse side effects in infected in vivo *** other words,this material acts as a combination therapy by inhibiting bacterial invasion and modulating bio-nano interactions in the wound.

Comparison of Chromatographic Performance for L-Phenylalanine-Derived Organic Phases on Silica by “Grafting from” and “Grafting to” Strategies

L-phenylalanine-derived polymerizable organogel, N’-octadecyl-Nα-(4-vinyl)-benzoyl-L-phenylalanineami- de (4) has been prepared according to the procedure described elsewhere. Compound 4 was successfully polymerized by surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from the initiator grafted silica particles (sil-poly4). It was also telomerized with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) and the telomer (T4) was grafted on to silica (sil-T4). TGA and elemental analysis measurement revealed that higher amount of polymer can graft by ATRP process than that of “grafting to” strategy. The results of 13C CP/MAS NMR measurement showed that the N-alkyl chain of the grafted polymers for both sil-poly4 and sil-T4 remained as less ordered gauche conformational form on silica surface and no inversion to trans form was occurred until temperature is increased up to 50?C. The retention of alkylbenzene samples showed that sil-poly4 prepared by “grafting from” method yielded extremely higher retention than conventional C18 phase however, sil-T4 prepared by conventional “grafting to” method showed lower retention than C18 phase. Aspects of molecular recognition were evaluated by the retention studies of a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aromatic positional isomers. We have observed sil-T4 yielded slightly higher selectivity for PAHs than sil-poly4 regardless the fact that it has low surface coverage and lower hydrophobic interactions. The enhanced selectivity observed for sil-T4 than C18 phases and sil-poly4 can be explained by the π - π interactions between the guest PAHs and carbonyl groups present in the polymer chain. In addition the aromatic moieties of compound 4 that aggregates through π - π interactions also contribute to the separation of PAHs for both sil-poly4 and sil-T4. Previously, we reported that changes induced in autonomic neurotransmission in rats by Lactobacillus brevis SBC8803 may be mediated by serotonin 3 (5-HT3) receptors. In this study, we evaluated the effects of heat-killed L. brevis SBC8803 on serotonin (5-HT) releasing from intestinal cells. In the in vitro study, L. brevis SBC8803 stimulated 5-HT release from cultured rat endocrine RIN-14B cells (SBC8803 vs. sterile water;P in vivo study, 2 mg of heat-killed L. brevis SBC8803 was administered using a stomach sonde (feeding needle) to C57BL/6J mice. Analysis of plasma by ELISA showed gradually increase in 5-HT concentrations (0 min vs. 60 min;P ex vivo cultured intestinal loops composed of duodenum and part of the jejunum, from C3H/HeN and C57BL/6J male mice indicated that L. brevis SBC8803 effectively induced 5-HT release (SBC8803 vs. sterile water;P L. brevis SBC8803 may stimulate 5-HT release from mouse intestinal cells such as enterochromaffin cells.

The threat of biological and chemical terror acts remains a growing worldwide *** is therefore a need to develop appropriate technology for the detection of chemical and biological warfare agents,with early identification intended for use by first ***,we disclose the developed autonomous air sampling and detection system for evaluation of the presence of chemical and biological warfare agents that can be harmful to the *** current device utilizes the designed mist generator-assisted air collection system(338 l min^(−1))and biosensing chip technologies,such as electrochemical measurement,Au nanoparticle-based localized surface plasmon resonance,and rapid microfluidic chip PCR for detection of minute concentrations lower than the mean lethal dose(LD_(50))of nerve gases(sarin and VX),toxic proteins(BTX/A/Hc and ricin),and pathogens(anthrax simulant).An operation time of only 5–15 min is needed for the collection and detection;sample preparation is already integrated into the system without the need for direct human *** addition to the system’s sensitivity and ease of use,its portability makes it highly beneficial for first responders,which could aid in immediate risk assessment and mitigation of on-site events.
