An Unusual Acceleration of Amination Reactivity by the Proximal Ester Groups in Catechol Diesters: An Efficient Way for Peptide Synthesis

To clarify the characteristics of gas flow in high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray gun, aerodynamic research is performed using a special gun. The gun has rectangular cross-sectional area and sidewalls of optical glass to visualize the internal flow. The gun consists of a supersonic nozzle with the design Mach number of 2.0 followed by a straight passage called barrel. Compressed dry air up to 0.78 MPa is used as a process gas instead of combustion gas which is used in a commercial HVOF gun. The high-speed gas flows with shock waves in the gun and jets are visualized by schlieren technique. Complicated internal and external flow-fields containing various types of shock wave as well as expansion wave are visualized.

Development of high stability hot mix asphalt concrete with hybrid binder

Cost reduction of public works projects has been desired due to severe financial circumstances. Therefore, asphalt pavement has been requested to extend its life. Semi-flexible pavement or epoxy asphalt pavement, which has high rutting resistance and oil resistance, may be applied to the place where these performances are demanded. However, special technique is required in manufacturing and construction. In addition, these materials have also raised a problem that they cannot be recycled. Meanwhile, conventional asphalt pavement has several drawbacks. It is vulnerable to rutting caused by traffic load and damage caused by petroleum oils such as gasoline or motor oil. The materials used in asphalt mixtures were studied for improving the durability of asphalt mixture. A high stability asphalt concrete was developed which has equal or superior performance to semi-flexible pavement and epoxy asphalt pavement. In this paper, the process of selecting the substance and the characteristics evaluation of the developed mixtures are described. Furthermore, an inspection result as well as follow- up survey of the performance of the developed mixtures obtained from trial and actual construction is shown.

A Cyborg Insect Reveals a Function of a Muscle in Free Flight

While engineers put lots of effort,resources,and time in building insect scale micro aerial vehicles(MAVs)that fly like insects,insects themselves are the real masters of *** if we would use living insect as platform for MAV instead?Here,we reported a flight control via electrical stimulation of a flight musde of an insect-computer hybrid robot,which is the interface of a mountable wireless backpack controller and a living *** beetle uses indirect flight muscles to drive wing flapping and three major direct flight muscles(basalar,subalar,and third axilliary(3Ax)muscles)to control the kinematics of the wings for flight *** turning control was already achieved by stimulating basalar and 3Ax muscles,electrical stimu lation of subalar musdes resulted in braking and elevation control in *** also demonstrated around 20 degrees of contralateral yaw and roll by stimulating individual subalar *** both subalar muscles lead to an increase of 20 degrees in pitch and decelerate the flight by 1.5 m/s2 as well as an induce in elevation of 2m/s.

Low haze transparent electrodes and highly conducting air dried films with ultra-long silver nanowires synthesized by one-step polyol method

Transparent electrodes made of silver nanowires （AgNWs） exhibit higher flexibility when compared to those made of tin doped indium oxide （ITO） and are expected to be applied in plastic electronics. However, these transparent electrodes composed of AgNWs show high haze because the wires cause strong light scattering in the visible range. Reduction of the wire diameter has been proposed as a way to weaken light scattering, although there have seldom been any studies focusing on the haze because of the difficulty involved in controlling the wire diameter. In this report, we show that the haze can be easily reduced by increasing the length of AgNWs with a large diameter. Ultra-long （u-long） AgNWs with lengths in the range of 20-100 μm and a maximum length of 230 μm have been successfully synthesized by adjusting the reaction temperature and the stirring speed of a one-step polyol process. Compared to typical AgNWs （with diameter and length of 70 nm and 10 μm, respectively） and ITO, a transparent electrode consisting of u-long AgNWs 91 nm in diameter demonstrated a low haze of 3.4%-1.6% and a low sheet resistance of 24-109 Ω/sq. at a transmittance of 94%-97%. Even when fabricated at room temperature without any post-treatment, the electrodes composed of u-long AgNWs achieved a sheet resistance of 19 Ω/sq, at a transmittance of 80%, which is six orders of magnitude lower than that of typical AgNWs.

Liquid biopsy of gastric cancer patients:Circulating tumor cells and cell-free nucleic acids

To improve the clinical outcomes of cancer patients, early detection and accurate monitoring of diseases are necessary. Numerous genetic and epigenetic alterations contribute to oncogenesis and cancer progression, and analyses of these changes have been increasingly utilized for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic purposes in malignant diseases including gastric cancer (GC). Surgical and/or biopsy specimens are generally used to understand the tumor-associated alterations; however, those approaches cannot always be performed because of their invasive characteristics and may fail to reflect current tumor dynamics and drug sensitivities, which may change during the therapeutic process. Therefore, the importance of developing a non-invasive biomarker with the ability to monitor real-time tumor dynamics should be emphasized. This concept, so called “liquid biopsy”, would provide an ideal therapeutic strategy for an individual cancer patient and would facilitate the development of “tailor-made” cancer management programs. In the blood of cancer patients, the presence and potent utilities of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and cell-free nucleic acids (cfNAs) such as DNA, mRNA and microRNA have been recognized, and their clinical relevance is attracting considerable attention. In this review, we discuss recent developments in this research field as well as the relevance and future perspectives of CTCs and cfNAs in cancer patients, especially focusing on GC.

Polyvinyl alcohol–potassium iodide gel probe to monitor the distribution of reactive species generation around atmospheric-pressure plasma jet

This study proposes polyvinyl alcohol–potassium iodide(PVA–KI)as a novel gel chemical *** probe uses the reactions among PVA,KI,water,borax,and oxidative species to visualize the distribution of reactive *** method provides information regarding the distribution of reactive species by coloration on the gel *** effects of the surrounding gas phase on the distribution and diffusion of the reactive species are also investigated using the PVA–KI gel ***,the relationship between the irradiation distance and reactive species diffusion is determined on the surface of the PVA–KI probe with and without plastic *** the irradiation distance appropriately leads to an increase in the modified area as detected by the PVA–KI gel probe *** relative concentration distributions of the reactive species are also obtained from visualized color distributions measured using a ***,reactive species generation by long-scale line plasma is confirmed by the color reaction on the PVA–KI gel surface,with a greater area being covered by an atmospheric-pressure pulsed microwave line plasma source.

Investigation on Effect of Composition on the Drying of Castables with Cement Binder

Monolithic refractory castables comprising a hydraulic bond are still used in a vast majority of cases because of their flexibility and robustness,despite many developments for chemical as well as non-cement castable *** drying can however be a challenge,in particular for deflocculated dense castables of the low cement castable *** publications have been released on this topic for the last ten years,but they often focused on the drying mechanisms or on the addition of drying *** paper presents some experimental results on the effect of the composition on the drying properties,especially on the effect of silicon carbide,used for its high thermal conductivity,and on the matrix *** also introduces two laboratory tests to study and iteratively improve the drying schedule of a given castable *** results show that the spalling resistance and the vapor pressure build-up are significantly influenced by the *** is also shown that the castable properties after drying can be altered if the heating rate is very high.
