The substantial benefits of ramipril over conventional therapy in high-risk.patients are not always associated with clinically significant differences in brachial arterial pressure, and largely remain unexplained. We undertook.this acute study to establish the magnitude of and reason for different acute effects of ramipril and atenolol on arterial pressure. Methods: We enrolled 30 patients, who took.10 mg ramipril, 100 mg atenolol, and placebo at intervals of ≥ 7 days, in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. After baseline, measurements were tak.n at 30- 60 min intervals for 5 h, and comprised cuff brachial pressure, radial artery tonometry with generation of central aortic pressure, and pulse wave velocity for aorta, upper limb and lower limb arteries. Results: Both ramipril and atenolol reduced arterial pressure, and the diastolic pressure fall was similar in the aorta and brachial artery, but the systolic pressure fall for ramipril was greater than for atenolol(by 5.2 mmHg, P< 0.0001) in the aorta compared with the brachial artery. The aortic systolic pressure difference with ramipril in comparison with atenolol was accompanied by an absolute difference of 10.7% (P< 0.0001) in the augmentation index, denoting a reduction in peripheral wave reflection by ramipril. The aortic pulse wave velocity fell to a similar degree with ramipril in comparison with atenolol, but fell to a greater degree(1.35 and 0.44 m/s, respectively, P< 0.0001 for both) in muscular arteries of the lower and upper limbs. Conclusion: A greater(average, 5.2 mmHg) decrease in aortic systolic pressure caused by ramipril may explain the greater benefit of ramipril over atenolol. The difference is attributable to decreased stiffness of peripheral arteries and a reduction in wave reflection.

The authors reviewed clinical profiles and laboratory findings for 100 cases of abducens nerve paresis without impairment of the other cranial nerves, limb weak.ess, and ataxia throughout the clinical course. Review of the medical records of 9300 patients referred to our neuoroimmunological laboratory for serum anti-ganglioside antibody testing. Information was obtained from each primary physician on symptoms of preceding infection; initial symptoms; neurological signs during the illness; the clinical course; treatment provided; and outcome. Isolated abducens nerve paresis was present in 100 patients and bilateral paresis in 29. Tentative diagnoses made by the primary physicians on request of anti-ganglioside antibody testing were abducens nerve palsy (n=68), Fisher syndrome (n=14), acute ophthalmoparesis without ataxia (n=14). Symptoms of infection anteceded in 63. Tendon reflexes were absent or decreased in 27. Distal paresthesias were experienced by seven. Serum anti-GQ1b antibody was positive in 25. These findings suggest that some cases of isolated abducens nerve palsy can be categorized as a regional variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome or mild form of Fisher syndrome.

Magnetic Pair-Break.ng in Y1-xHoxNi2B2C （x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75） Single Crystals

Temperature-dependent resistivity and magnetic susceptibility were studied for quaternary borocarbide intermetallic compounds Y1-xHoxNi2B2C （x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0. 75）, which show coexistence of superconductivity with magnetism. In a normal state, the compounds exhibit conventional metallic behaviour. The Debye temperature θD is derived by fitting the temperature dependence of resistivity to the Bloch-Gruneisen expression, i.e. θD scales with M^-0.5 （M is the averaged atomic mass on the Y^3＋ site）, which means that the acoustic mode of the lattice vibrating spectrum is influenced by the Y^3＋ site atoms. Fitting the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility above TN to the Curie-Weiss law, effective magnetic moment μeff is deduced, and then de Gennes factor dG is calculated. It is found that as Ho content increases, μeff as well as dG increases and Tc decreases. Moreover, the decrease of Tc scales with dG, i.e., △Te ∝ -nI^2 N （EF ）dG, which is consistent with the prediction of the Abrik.sov-Gor＇k.v theory. We suggest that pair-break.ng effect of magnetic Ho^3＋ ions. The significant impact on To. the depression of Tc could be mainly ascribed to the magnetic change of Debye temperature with Ho content may not have significant impact on Tc.

Physicochemical properties of Li_(3)Ba_(2)La_(3)(MoO_(4))_(8):Eu,Tb red-emitting phosphor for solid state white lamps

In this work.combustion synthesis was used for the first time to fabricate a phosphor material with red emission for applications in solid-state white-light *** synthesized a material with emission wavelength at λ_(em)=617 nm,excited under long UV-blue wavelength based on Eu^(3+),Tb^(3+)-activated molybdates Li_(3)Ba_(2)(La_(1-x-y)Eu_(x)Tb_(y))_(3)(MoO_(4))_(8) with 0 ≤ x ≤1 and 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.A series of powder samples were produced by the combustion method and post-annealed at 800℃ in *** crystalline phase formation was investigated by X-ray diffraction,which reveals the monoclinic C2/c(15) space *** is observed that crystalline structure and morphology are preserved when the host lattice is doped with Eu^(3+) or Tb^(3+) single ions and co-doped with both ions at different doping concentrations.A detailed characterization by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)shows a similar morphology in all samples:rather large(1-7 μm) agglomerate particles with irregular shapes and surrounded by smaller nanoparticles of 50 nm in ***-visible absorption spectra confirm the presence of Eu^(3+) and Tb^(3+) *** luminescent properties of the obtained phosphors were studied in *** measurements indicate that the best emission intensity is for Eu^(3+):Tb^(3+)doping ratios of 80:0,90:0 and 20:*** the other hand,samples with 80:0,60:40,and 20:80 doping ratios show the highest intensity in a detailed photoluminescence analysis and they exhibit the highest quantum yield values.A complete and efficient energy transfer from the sensitizer Tb^(3+) to the activator Eu^(3+) is observed in all co-doped phosphors post-annealed at 800℃ for 4 ***,the Li_(3)Ba_(2)La_(3)(MaO_(4))_(8):Eu^(3+),Tb^(3+) materials fabricated by combustion synthesis are excellent phosphors for being applied as red-emitting component in solid-state white-light lamps due to an improved color rendering index(CRI) that can be obtained under lo

Characteristics and predictors of gastric cancer after Helicobacter pylori eradication

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) eradication can reduce gastric cancer. However, gastric cancer still develops after eradication, and cases who received eradication therapy are increasing. In this study, we have reviewed the characteristics and predictors of primary gastric cancer developing after H. pylori eradication. In terms of the characteristics, endoscopic, histologic, and molecular characteristics are reported. Endoscopically, gastric cancer after eradication is often depressedtype and shows a gastritis-lik. appearance, which sometimes mak.s the diagnosis difficult. Histologically, most gastric cancer after eradication is intestinal type, and non-neoplastic epithelium, also called epithelium with low-grade atypia, is frequently seen over the tumor, which is presumably the cause of the endoscopic gastritis-lik. appearance. As for molecular characteristics, some mark.rs, such as k.67, MUC2, and Wnt5a expression, are lower in cancer from patients in whom H. pylori has been eradicated. In terms of predictors, several Japanese studies have reported that severe endoscopic atrophy at eradication is a risk.factor for gastric cancer development. Histologic intestinal metaplasia, especially in the corpus, and long-term use of proton pump inhibitors, are also reported as risk.factors for gastric cancer after H. pylori eradication. These studies on the characteristics and predictors of gastric cancer development will become the cornerstone for establishing a novel surveillance program based on the gastric cancer risk.stratification specific to H. pylori-eradicated patients.

Two-degree-of-freedom H-infinity control of combustion in diesel engine using a discrete dynamics model

This paper proposes an H-infinity combustion control method for diesel engines. The plant model is the discrete dynamics model developed by Yasuda et al., which is implementable on a real engine control unit. We introduce a two-degree-of-freedom control scheme with a feedback.controller and a feedforward controller. This scheme achieves both good feedback.properties, such as disturbance suppression and robust stability, and a good transient response. The feedforward controller is designed by tak.ng the inverse of the static plant model, and the feedback.controller is designed by the H-infinity control method, which reduces the effect of the trubocharger lag. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated in simulations using the nonlinear discrete dynamics model.

Decolorization of Orange Ⅱ using an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor with and without co-substrates

We investigated the decolorization of Orange Ⅱ with and without the addition of co-substrates and nutrients under an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor（ASBR）.The increase in COD concentrations from 900 to 1750 to 3730 mg/L in the system treating 100 mg/L of Orange Ⅱ-containing wastewater enhanced color removal from 27% to 81% to 89%,*** the absence of co-substrates and nutrients,more than 95% of decolorization was achieved by the acclimatized anaerobic microbes in the bioreactor treating 600 mg/L of Orange Ⅱ.The decrease in mixed liquor suspended solids concentration by endogenous lysis of biomass preserved a high reducing environment in the ASBR,which was important for the reduction of the Orange Ⅱ azo bond that caused *** maximum decolorization rate in the ASBR was approximately 0.17 g/hr in the absence of co-substrates and nutrients.
