Artificial thermoremanent magnetization imposed on natural basalt samples was used to check the reliability of Shaw’s palaeointensity method[Shaw,1974;Kono,1978;Rolph and Shaw,1985] and to give an indication of the accuracy of ***,thermal remanence was induced in all samples(50 in total) in a known field(50±0.1 mT).This remanence was regarded as the"original"natural remanent magnetization("NRM").The samples were divided in to three subsets(A, B,and C) and intensity experiments were *** subset of samples used different thermal remanent magnetization(TRM) acquisition ***-magnetic properties on 14 representative subsamples were also measured both before and after the TRM acquisition steps to monitor possible magnetochemical *** has been demonstrated that intensity estimates by the Shaw method give values close to the expected value(50±5mT) in all three sets of basalt *** modified method with Rolph and Shaw[1985]correction,i.e.,using ratios of anhysteretic remanent magnetization given before the TRM step(ARM1) and after(ARM2),is proved to be a powerful approach to correct the TRM capacity changes that result from agnetochemical *** is especially so for sample set C, where the samples were heated up to 700 and then were held at this temperature for 40 min during TRM *** correction,45%of set C samples gave acceptable ***,some samples with strong magnetochemical alteration sometimes invalidated the ARM1/ARM2 ratio correction and gave wrong intensity *** rock magnetic properties is therefore very important when applying the Shaw method.

We report new absolute palaeointensity estimates using basalts from northeastern China(K/Ar age,125-120 Ma) using the modified Shaw method in conj.nction with the microwave technique. Samples for the palaeointensity experiments were selected mainly based on their good reversibility of thermomagnetic curves and single primary magnetization *** the modified Shaw method,28 out of 45 measured samples from 10 cooling units give a virtual dipole moment of(3.1±1.0)×10 Am,and the microwave technique using 14 acceptable determinations(out of 20 measured) give an average value of(2.9±0.9)×10 Am. Results using both the modified Shaw method and the microwave technique demonstrate that the geomagnetic field strength recorded by these lavas was *** is in agreement with previous results of the same time interval obtained by the Thellier method with partial thermal remanence(p-TRM) *** fact that different techniques give qualitatively compatible low palaeointensity results provides greater confidence that the weak field features seen j.st prior to the Cretaceous normal superchron(CNS) are the result of the actual field recorded by the basalts as opposed to artefacts of the method/*** study also demonstrates that the microwave technique can be used for very old basalts.

Axially heterostructured nanowires are a promising platform for next generation electronic and optoelectronic *** based on theoretical modeling have predicted more complex strain distributions and increased critical layer thicknesses than in thin films,due to lateral strain relaxation at the surface,but the understanding of the growth and strain distributions in these complex structures is hampered by the lack of high-resolution characterization ***,we demonstrate strain mapping of an axially segmented GalnP-lnP 190 nm diameter nanowire heterostructure using scanning X-ray *** systematically investigate the strain distribution and lattice tilt in three different segment lengths from 45 to 170 nm,obtaining strain maps with about 10^-4 relative strain *** experiments were performed using the 90 nm diameter nanofocus at the NanoMAX beamline,taking advantage of the high coherent flux from the first diffraction limited storage ring MAX *** experimental results are in good agreement with a full simulation of the experiment based on a three-dimensional(3D)finite element *** largest segments show a complex profile,where the lateral strain relaxation at the surface leads to a dome-shaped strain distribution from the mismatched interfaces,and a change from tensile to compressive strain within a single *** lattice tilt maps show a cross-shaped profile with excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement with the *** contrast,the shortest measured InP segment is almost fully adapted to the surrounding GalnP segments.

Bone wound healing is a highly dynamic and precisely controlled process through which damaged bone undergoes repair and complete regeneration. External factors can alter this process, leading to delayed or failed bone wound healing. The findings of recent studies suggest that the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs) can reduce bone mass, precipitate osteoporotic fractures and increase the rate of dental implant failure. With 10% of Americans prescribed antidepressants, the potential of SSRIs to impair bone healing may adversely affect millions of patients’ ability to heal after sustaining trauma. Here, we investigate the effect of the SSRI sertraline on bone healing through pre-treatment with(10 mg·kg-1sertraline in drinking water, n = 26) or without(control, n = 30) SSRI followed by the creation of a 5-mm calvarial defect. Animals were randomized into three surgical groups:(a) empty/sham,(b) implanted with a DermaMatrix scaffold soak-loaded with sterile PBS or(c) DermaMatrix soak-loaded with542.5 ng BMP2. SSRI exposure continued until sacrifice in the exposed groups at 4 weeks after surgery. Sertraline exposure resulted in decreased bone healing with significant decreases in trabecular thickness, trabecular number and osteoclast dysfunction while significantly increasing mature collagen fiber formation. These findings indicate that sertraline exposure can impair bone wound healing through disruption of bone repair and regeneration while promoting or defaulting to scar formation within the defect site.

This paper looks at student's view of the usefulness of a problem solving and programming module in the first year of a 3-year undergraduate *** School of Science and Technology,University of Northampton,UK has been investigating,over the last seven years the teaching of problem *** looking at whether a more visual approach has any benefits(the visual programming includes both 2-d and graphical user interfaces).Whilst the authors have discussed the subj.ct problem solving and programming in the past [1] this paper considers the students perspective from research collected/collated by a student researcher under a new initiative within the *** students interviewed either had completed the module within the two years of the survey or were completing the problem-solving module in their first year.
