Relationship between body surface area and ALT normalization after long-term lamivudine treatment

AIM： To further evaluate the relationship between BSA and the effects of lamivudine in a greater number of cases and over a longer period of observation than in our previous evaluation. METHODS： We evaluated 249 patients with chronic hepatitis B. The effects of treatment for one year （n = 249）, two years （n = 147）, and three years （n = 72） were evaluated from the levels of serum ALT and HBVoDNA, as biological and virological effects （undetectable levels by PCR）, respectively. Moreover, several variables that could influence the response to treatment, including ALT, albumin, bilirubin, platelet counts, BSA, HBVoDNA, and HBeAg were analyzed. RESULTS： For 1-year treatment, multivariate analysis revealed that BSA （P = 0.0002） was the only factor for the biological effect, and that ALT （P = 0.0017）, HBV- DNA （P = 0.0004）, and HBeAg （P = 0.0021） were independent factors for the virological effect. For 2-year treatment, multivariate analysis again showed that BSA （P = 0.0147） was the only factor for the biological effect, and that ALT （P = 0.0192） and HBeAg （P = 0.0428） were independent factors for the virological effect. For 3-year treatment, multivariate analysis, however, could not reveal BSA （P = 0.0730） as a factor for the normalization of ALT levels. CONCLUSION： BSA is a significant predictor for the normalizing the effect of lamivudine therapy on ALT for an initial 2-year period, suggesting that lamivudine dosage should be based on the individual BSA.

Alcohol drinking rates of male between 7th and 11th graders in Japan decreased gradually based on nationwide repeated cross-sectional surveys from 1996 to 2008

Early drinking is considered to result in making tolerant of alcohol consumption and a higher prevalence of alcohol related disorders in the later. We focused generational impacts on drinking rate among high school students based on multiple nationwide data. The surveys were nationwide, cross-sectional random sampling surveys given every 4 years from the Japanese Youth Tobacco and Alcohol Surveys, 1996 to 2008. Participants were male 53,925 high school students from 7th grade to 11th grade. We divided to the three follow-up groups every 4 years from 1996 to 2004 for male junior high school students in 7th grades and the end periods were 4 years later in 11th grades. Outcome measures in this study were life time drinking, current drinking within 30 days and weekly drinking. All drinking rates decreased each at 7th and at 11th grade. The increments in these drinking rates from 7th grade to 11th grade in males decreased gradually in recent follow-up groups. Generational impacts should be considered by using follow-up groups to study drinking behaviors among students.

Intravesical Infusion of Budesonide Foam Improves Symptoms in a Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis Rat Model

Purpose: Since intravesically administered steroid therapy may treat bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) with fewer side effects than the current treatment of orally administered steroids, we investigated whether the intravesical infusion of budesonide foam can effectively treat BPS/IC symptoms in a rat model of tranilast-induced BPS/IC. Methods: There were 6 rat treatment groups (n = 8 per group): control + single or daily saline infusion, tranilast + single or daily saline infusion, and tranilast + single or daily budesonide infusion. All groups except for the controls were fed a tranilast supplemented diet for 5 weeks. Budesonide and saline were infused intravesically. After the BPS/IC rat model underwent single infusion treatments, we measured the paw pain threshold using the von Frey test and continuous cystometry was taken. After two weeks of daily intravesical infusions, we measured locomotor activity and serum cortisol levels;harvested bladders underwent histological analysis. Results: Both pain threshold and locomotor activity were significantly lower in the saline-infused groups receiving the tranilast diet, but there were no differences between the budesonide-infused groups and the controls. The interval between bladder contractions was significantly shorter in the tranilast group than the control or tranilast + budesonide infusion groups. The serum cortisol levels did not change. Hematoxylin-Eosin stainings of the bladder showed thickening of the bladder muscle layer and mucosal edema in the tranilast group, while the tranilast + budesonide infusion group showed only mild changes. Conclusion: Intravesical infusion of budesonide effectively treated BPS/IC symptoms in a rat model of BPS/IC.

UV-Vis Spectrophotometry and AFM Observation of Diethyl Dithiophosphate Adsorption on Chalcopyrite at Varied pHs

Adsorption of diehtyl dithiophosphate on chalcopyrite has been studied using UV-visible spectroscopy at pH values of 4, 6, and 9. It was found that the adsorption of diethyl dithiophosphate decreased with the increasing pH treatments. The inhibition of diethyl dithiophosphate adsorption was found prominent in higher pH as a result of metal hydroxide species formation onto chalcopyrite surface. First order kinetic has been proposed and represented the adsorption mechanism. Flotation test using Hallimond tube has also been conducted and the results were consistent with the proposed mechanism. Furthermore, the morphological changes of the treated chalcopyrite were observed using Atomic Force Microscopy （AFM） showing the propensity of growth of islands, the new surfaces as products of the reaction. The hydrophobicity was measured in the form of force of adhesion. The results resembled with the approached mechanism.

Hexagonal Nano-Crystalline BCN Films Grown on Si (100) Substrate Studied by X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Hexagonal nano-crystalline boron carbonitride (h-BCN) films grown on Si (100) substrate have been precisely investigated. The films were synthesized by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using tris-dimethylamino borane as a single-source molecular precursor. The deposition was performed by setting RF power at 400 - 800 W. The reaction pressure was at 2.6 Pa and the substrate temperature was recorded at 700°C - 800°C. Formation of the nano-crystalline h-BCN compound has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The diffraction peaks at 26.3° together with a small unknown peak at 29.2° were elucidated due to the formation of an h-BCN structure. The films composed of B, C, and N atoms with different B-N, B-C, C-N chemical bonds in forming the sp2-BCN atomic configuration studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Orientation and local structures of the h-BCN hybrid were studied by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements. The dominant presence of p* and s* resonance peaks of the sp2-hybrid orbitals in the B K-edge NEXAFS spectra revealed the formation of the sp2-BCN configuration around B atoms like-BN3 in h-BN. The orientation was suggested on the basis of the polarization dependence of B K-edge and N K-edge of the NEXAFS spectra.

A Case of Simultaneous Total Knee Arthroplasty in Congenital Dislocation of the Patella

The gonarthrosis with congenital dislocation of the patella is rare condition. This paper will report about total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for the valgus knee with bilateral congenital dislocation of the patella. A 52-year-old woman presented to our hospital with progressive pain in bilateral knees. Both knee showed severe valgus deformity and lateral dislocation of the patella. Anteroposterior weight-bearing radiographs showed osteoarthritic changes in the lateral compartment with 7 valgus deformity at the right and 15 at the left. A bilateral TKA with cruciate retained components (NAKASHIMA FINE) was performed. Good tracking of the patella was achieved by using a lateral parapatellar approach and vastus medialis plication. There are no normative guidelines of operative procedure about TKA for osteoarthritis of valgus knee with congenital dislocation of the patella. With some referencing to current literature, strategies to good patella tracking are discussed.

Dextran coating on and among fibers of polymer sponge scaffold for osteogenesis by bone marrow cells in vivo

Although hydroxyapatite is commonly used as a scaffold for bone regeneration, sponges may be suitable because of the adaptability to the defect. To use as a scaffold, the fiber of sponge would be coated with any adhesive to storage stem cells in the sponges. Fiber in the structure of commercially available sponges was coated by immersion in dextran solution and air dried. After seeding of rat bone marrow cells (rBMCs), the sponges were implanted subcutis of rats for estimate osteogenesis in vivo. The level of osteocalcin was 25.28 ±5.71 ng/scaffold and that of Ca was 129.20 ±19.69 μg/scaffold. These values were significantly high- er than those in sponges without dextran coating (p <0.01). It was thought that rBMCs could be stored on the shelf by dextran deposition in the fiber of the sponge. In vivo examination, dextran induced osteogenesis by rBMCs in many spaces in the inner structure of the sponge.

Miniature integrated solar cells for power sources of micromachines, such as sensors and actuators were fabricated. For the power supply of autonomous operation, such as free-moving micro robotic systems and space-based systems, a self-contained on-board or remote power supply is desirable. The systems of power supply must consume as small an area as possible to minimize the overall size of the system and output high voltage. In this work, The miniature integrated solar cells based on amorphous Si (a-Si) with the area of 2.5 mm consisted of 2 unit cells series connected were fabricated using a photolithography technique. The current-voltage characteristic of the solar cell under He-Ne laser (λ=632.8 nm) with the power of 1.6-6.4 mW were measured. With the laser power 6.4 mW, the solar cell produced a highest output voltage of 1.88 V and the power of 0.74 mW. In contrast to the output power, a highest efficiency of 18%, which is more than twice greater than that operated under sunlight, was obtained with the laser power of 1.6 mW. These results showed the usefulness of miniature amorphous silicon solar cells activated by laser for power sources of micromachines.

In Japan,viral hepatitis is the main cause of chronic liver diseases,including liver *** to the availability of highly effective antiviral drugs in combination with antihepatitis measures,Japan has become one of the most successful countries in the world with regard to hepatitis virus *** Japan,there are many elderly patients who have been infected with hepatitis C virus for a long time,and antihepatitis measures have been in place since the ***,the medical situation in Japan is expected to reflect the future situation in other countries where hepatitis countermeasures have been recently initiated and the infected population is *** nationwide survey clarified the changes in the etiologies of liver cirrhosis in *** viral hepatitis remains a major cause of liver cirrhosis in Japan,nonviral cirrhosis is suggested to increasingly contribute to the etiologies of liver cirrhosis,as opposed to viral hepatitis‐related liver *** changing etiology of liver cirrhosis in Japan may help to predict future global trends in chronic liver diseases.
