We congratulate *** and colleagues for their recently published study entitled“Prognosis Associated With CA19-9 Response Dynamics and Normalization During Neoadjuvant Therapy in Resected Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma”in Annals of Surgery(1).Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)remains the most lethal type of human cancer due to its high chemoresistance and invasiveness(2).In resected PDAC,the median overall survival(OS)has increased from 22.1 to 35 months during the past 10 years,largely owing to improvements in adjuvant therapies(3,4).On the other hand,surgical resection offers the only chance of cure,but surgery can be associated with significant morbidity and decreased activities of daily living(ADL),especially in the Whipple procedure(pancreaticoduodenectomy).Recently,the importance of preoperative chemotherapy even in operable PDAC has been increasingly recognized(5).

Er was doped into porous Si by immersing the porous Si sample in a saturated ErCl3,ethanol solution. Sharp and intense 1.54 μm photoluminescence caused by intra-4f-shefl transitions in Er3+ ions was observed up to room temperature. It is shown that the immersing process is valid to dope Er in high concentration in porous Si. Time resolved study of the Er-doped porous Si revealed that the doped Er3+ ions are excited by energy transfer from photo-generated electron-hole pairs in the host. The energy back transfer process from the excited 4f electrons in the Er3+ion to the host is not a dominant factor to quench the Er-related emission in porous Si. Ourresults are well explained by a proposed model in which an intermediate state was introduced.

A large number of towns along the Sanriku coastal line were swept away by tsunami attacks on March 11,2011. Although some heritage buildings survived, the damage condition was too severe to carry on repair and restore them to the owners. As the municipal cultural heritage division and local cultural society in Kesennuma City were looking for possibility to save these damaged heritage buildings, the author gave them full assistance. To apply for fund for the repair and restoration work to related foundations, the author made an investigation of the damage conditions, prepared measured drawings, fundamental restoration plans and cost estimates. Domestic and international foundations granted funds to our projects for three years in May 2012, and we formed a restoration body to take responsibility of repair and restoration work. But soon, we were faced with several difficulties. The first is that we had to wait for a long time until the authority fixed the town redevelopment plan, meeting the National Guideline of Tsunami-Free Redevelopment. The second is that the building cost continued to increase during rapid-development periods. Although the author expected to complete the whole work within three years, the progress is really slow, and has not amounted to a quarter.

To improve several agronomic traits in crisphead lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.)under high-temperature growth conditions,we investigated the correlation among those traits in multiple cultivars and performed genetic mapping of their causal *** a field cultivation test of Empire type(serrated leaf)and Salinas type(wavy leaf)cultivars,Empire type cultivars showed increased tipburn susceptibility and late bolting compared with Salinas type *** attempted genetic mapping of leaf shape and bolting time by ddRAD-seq using the F2 population derived from a cross between‘VI185’(Empire type)and‘ShinanoGreen’(Salinas type).These analyses suggested that both traits are controlled by a single locus in *** of 51 commercial lettuce cultivars with a tightly linked marker(LG5_v8_252.743Mbp)at this locus showed an association between its genotype and the serrated leaf *** further fine mapping and transcriptome analysis,a gene encoding putative CIN-like TCP transcription factor was determined to be a candidate gene at this locus and was designated as *** insertion of retrotransposable element was found in the allele of‘VI185’,and its transcript level in the leaves was lower than that in‘ShinanoGreen’.Because shapes of leaf epidermal cells in‘VI185’were similar to those in the TCP family mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana,the leaf shape phenotype was likely caused by reduced expression of ***,because it is known that the TCP family protein also controls flowering time via interaction with FT in ***,it was highly possible that LsTCP4 gave pleiotropic effects on both leaf shape and bolting time in lettuce.

AIM: To investigate the safety and efficacy of the Cyberknife treatment for patients with advanced or terminal stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Patients with HCC with extrahepatic metastasis or vascular or bile duct invasion were enrolled between May 2011 and June 2015. The Cyberknife was used to treat each lesion. Treatment response scores were based on Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors v1.1. The trends of tumor markers,including alpha fetoprotein(AFP) and proteins induced by vitamin K absence Ⅱ(PIVKA Ⅱ) were assessed. Prognostic factors for tumor response and tumor markers were evaluated with Fisher's exact test and a logistic regression model. Survival was evaluated with the Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards ***: Sixty-five patients with 95 lesions were enrolled. Based on the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer classification,all patients were either in the advanced or terminal stage of the disease. The target lesions were as follows: 52 were bone metastasis; 9,lung metastasis; 7,brain metastasis; 9,portal vein invasion;4,hepatic vein invasion; 4,bile duct invasion; and 10 other lesion types. The response rate and disease control rate were 34% and 53%,respectively. None of the clinical factors correlated significantly with tumor response. Fiducial marker implantation was associated with better control of both AFP(HR = 0.152; 95%CI: 0.026-0.887; P = 0.036) and PIVKA Ⅱ(HR = 0.035; 95%CI: 0.003-0.342; P = 0.004). The median survival time was 9 mo(95%CI: 5-15 mo). Terminal stage disease(HR = 9.809; 95%CI: 2.589-37.17,P < 0.001) and an AFP of more than 400 ng/m L(HR = 2.548; 95%CI: 1.070-6.068,P = 0.035) were associated with worse survival. A radiation dose higher than 30 Gy(HR = 0.274; 95%CI: 0.093-0.7541,P = 0.012) was associated with better survival. In the 52 cases of bone metastasis,36 patients(69%) achieved pain relief. Toward the lattice QCD calculation at finite density, we propose “matter-antimatter coexistence method”, where matter and anti-matter systems are prepared on two parallel R4-sheets in five-dimensional Euclidean space-time. We put a matter system M with a chemical potential μ∈C on a R4-sheet, and also put an anti-matter system withon the other R4-sheet shifted in the fifth direction. Between the gauge variables? in M and in, we introduce a correlation termwith a real parameter λ. In one limit of , a strong constraint is realized, and therefore the total fermionic determinant becomes real and non-negative, due to the cancellation of the phase factors in M and , although this system resembles QCD with an isospin chemical potential. In another limit of , this system goes to two separated ordinary QCD systems with the chemical potential of μand . For a given finite-volume lattice, if one takes an enough large value of λ, is realized and phase cancellation approximately occurs between two fermionic determinants in M and, which suppresses the sign problem and is expected to make the lattice calculation possible. For the obtained gauge configurations of the coexistence system, matter-side quantities are evaluated through their measurement only for the matter part M. The physical quantities in finite density QCD are expected to be estimated by the calculations with gradually decreasing λand the extrapolation to λ=0. We also consider more sophisticated improvement of this method using an irrelevant-type correlation.

Mechanical, Thermal and Electrical Properties of Lotus-Type Porous Metals

Lotus-type porous metals are fabricated by directional solidification of molten metals dissolving hydrogen. Unidirectional pores cause various anisotropic features of mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Tensile, compressive and fatigue strength parallel to the pore direction are higher than those perpendicular to the pore direction. Besides, thermal and electrical conductivities parallel to the pore direction are higher than those perpendicular to the pore direction. Such anisotropy is attributed to the difference in the pinning cross-sectional area due to the dislocations and the scattering cross-sectional area due to electrons. The pore cross-sectional area perpendicular to the pore direction is much larger than that parallel to the pore direction. It is surmised that such difference in pore cross-section results in the anisotropy in mechanical, thermal and electrical properties.
