Analysis of stress fractures in athletes based on our clinical experience

AIM:To analyze stress fractures in athletes based on experience from our sports medicine ***:We investigated the association between stress fractures and age,sex,sports level,sports activity,and skeletal site in athletes seen at our sports medicine clinic between September 1991 and April *** fractures of the pars interarticularis were excluded from this ***:During this period(18 years and 8 mo),14276 patients(9215 males and 5061 females)consulted our clinic because of sports-related injuries,and 263 patients(1.8%)[171 males(1.9%)and 92 females(1.8%)]sustained stress *** average age of the patients with stress fractures was 20.2 years(range 10-46 years);112 patients(42.6%)were 15-19 years of age and 90(34.2%)were 20-24 years of ***,90 patients(34.2%)were active at a high recreational level and 173(65.8%)at a competitive *** highest proportion of stress fractures was seen in basketball athletes(21.3%),followed by baseball(13.7%),track and field(11.4%),rowing(9.5%),soccer(8.4%),aerobics(5.3%),and classical ballet(4.9%).The most common sites of stress fractures in these patients were the tibia(44.1%),followed by the rib(14.1%),metatarsal bone(12.9%),ulnar olecranon(8.7%)and pelvis(8.4%).The sites of the stress fractures varied from sport to *** ulnar olecranon was the most common stress fracture site in baseball players,and the rib was the most common in *** and classical ballet athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the tibia and metatarsal *** and field and soccer athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the tibia and pubic *** athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the *** and long distance female runners who sustained multiple stress fractures had the female athlete ***:The results of this analysis showed that stress fractures were seen in high-level young athletes,with similar proportions for males and females

AIM: To examine the effects of treatment with risedronate for 1 year on speed of sound(SOS) of the calcaneus and bone turnover markers in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. METHODS: Thirty-eight postmenopausal women with osteoporosis who had been treated with risedronate for > 1 year were enrolled in the study. The SOS and bone turnover markers were monitored during treatment with risedronate for 1 year. RESULTS: The urinary levels of cross-linked N-terminal telopeptides of type Ⅰ collagen and serum levels of alkaline phosphatase were significantly decreased at 3 mo(-34.7%) and 12 mo(-21.2%), respectively, compared with the baseline values. The SOS increased modestly, but significantly by 0.65% at 12 mo compared with the baseline value. Treatment with risedronate elicited an increase in the SOS of the calcaneus exceeding the coefficient of variation in vivo(0.27%). CONCLUSION: The present study confirmed that risedronate suppressed bone turnover and elicited a clinically significant increase in the SOS of the calcaneus in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND Angioedema is a disorder characterized by edema of the face,lips,tongue,and extremities due to increased vascular *** of the tongue usually occurs bilaterally,and the incidence of unilateral angioedema of the tongue is *** study reports a rare case of unilateral angioedema of the tongue with no identifiable cause and repeated recurrence even after discontinuation of an angiotensin-converting enzyme *** SUMMARY The patient was a 65-year-old woman with pre-existing hypertension and hyperlipidemia and had been receiving 20 mg/d of *** was diagnosed with angioedema due to unilateral swelling of the *** airway obstruction was observed,and the symptoms improved following the administration of 0.3 mg of epinephrine intramuscularly and 125 mg of methylprednisolone *** lisinopril was discontinued,unilateral angioedema of the tongue continued to recur every 2-5 mo,with the symptoms improving following the administration of prednisolone and an *** oral administration of 500 mg of tranexamic acid after dinner prevented the recurrence of *** Careful monitoring and identification of the underlying mechanism play a crucial role in the treatment of angioedema.

As a next-generation photovoltaic device,perovskite solar cells are rapidly ***,both solution and device stability pose challenges for commercialization due to chemical degradation caused by internal and external ***,the decomposition of iodoplumbate in a perovskite solution hinders the long-term use of perovskite ***,the synthesis of stable perovskites at low temperature is important for stable devices and wide applications(flexible devices and high reproducibility).Herein,the critical composition of perovskite is found to obtain high stabilities of both iodoplumbate and perovskite crystals by utilizing CsPbBr_(3) and FAPbI_(3),exhibiting high device performance and long-term solution *** novel composition of CsPbBr_(3)-alloyed FAPbI_(3) not only crystallizes under annealing-free conditions but also demonstrates excellent iodoplumbate stability for 100 days(∼3000 h)without any ***,high device stabilities are achieved over 2000 and 3000 h under extreme conditions of A.M.1.5 and 85℃/85%relative humidity,***,the device exhibited a high power conversion efficiency of 23.4%,and furthermore,CsPbBr_(3)-alloyed FAPbI_(3) was devoted to widen the applications in both flexible and carbon-electrode devices,thereby addressing both scientific depths and potential commercial materials.

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is often diagnosed during the peak reprodu-ctive years of young *** with active IBD around conception are at a significantly increased risk of disease relapse during pregnancy,which is associated with poor pregnancy and neonatal *** these substantial risks,it is prudent that disease remission should ideally be achieved before ***,some patients may experience a disease flare-up even if they are in a state of remission before *** must continue their IBD medications to reduce the risk of disease flare and subsequent poor outcomes during the gestational and postpartum *** treating IBD flare-ups during pregnancy,the management is quite similar to the therapeutic approach for non-pregnant patients with IBD,including 5-aminosalicylate,steroids,calcineurin inhibitors(CNIs),and biologic *** the data regarding the safety of CNIs in pregnant women with IBD is limited,the findings in our recent meta-analysis suggest that CNIs may be safer to use in those with IBD than in solid organ transplant *** are several types of biologics and small-molecule therapies currently approved for IBD,and physicians should thoroughly understand their clinical benefits and safety profiles when utilizing these treatments in the context of *** review highlights recent studies,including our systematic review and meta-analysis,and discusses the clinical advantages and safety considerations of biologics and small molecules for pregnant women with IBD.

We congratulate *** and colleagues for their recently published study entitled“Prognosis Associated With CA19-9 Response Dynamics and Normalization During Neoadjuvant Therapy in Resected Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma”in Annals of Surgery(1).Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)remains the most lethal type of human cancer due to its high chemoresistance and invasiveness(2).In resected PDAC,the median overall survival(OS)has increased from 22.1 to 35 months during the past 10 years,largely owing to improvements in adjuvant therapies(3,4).On the other hand,surgical resection offers the only chance of cure,but surgery can be associated with significant morbidity and decreased activities of daily living(ADL),especially in the Whipple procedure(pancreaticoduodenectomy).Recently,the importance of preoperative chemotherapy even in operable PDAC has been increasingly recognized(5).

A study on the effect of the solar ultra-violet radiation on the human skin fibroblast cells revealed that the production of matrix metalloproteinase-2 was inhibited by the radiation.A CO2 incubator connected by optical fibers to a reflector telescope for collecting the solar light was built at Syowa station by the 49th Japanese Antarctica Research *** direction of the telescope was continuously controlled by a sun-tracker to follow the movement of the Sun *** intensity of the collected light was monitored by a portable spectrophotometer housed *** human skin fibroblast cells were incubated in the CO2 chamber to investigate the effect of the solar radiation at Syowa station and were compared with those reference experiments at a laboratory in *** results showed cell damage by strong UV *** production of matrix metalloproteinase-2 was prompted by the moderate UV-B,but was inhibited by the strong UV-B radiation,as studied under laboratory conditions in *** effect of strong solar radiation at Syowa station involving the radiation of UV-B region was estimated to be of the same extent of the radiation caused by an artificial UV-B light with the intensity more than 50 mJ/cm2.
