Responses of Picoplankton to Nutrient Perturbation in the South China Sea, with Special Reference to the Coast-wards Distribution of Prochlorococcus

Responses of Prochlorococcus (Pro), Synechococcus (Syn), pico-eukaryotes (Euk) and heterotrophic bacteria (Bact) in pelagic marine ecosystems to external nutrient perturbations were examined using nitrogen- (N), phosphorus- (P), iron- (Fe), and cobalt- (Co) enriched incubations in the South China Sea in November 1997. Variations in abundance of the 4 groups of microorganism and cellular pigment content of the autotrophs during incubation were followed by flow-cytometric measurements for seven days. During the incubation, Syn and Euk showed a relatively higher demand on Fe and N, while Pro required higher levels of Co and P. The Fe was inadequate for all the organisms in the deep euphotic zone (75 m) of the study area. The experimental results also implied that biological interaction among the organisms played a role in the community structure shift during the incubation. It seemed that besides the effects of temperature, there are some other physical and chemical limitations as well as impacts from biological interactions on Pro distribution in coast waters.

Diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI) of the liver can be performed using most commercially available machines and is currently accepted in routine sequence. This sequence has some potential as an imaging biomarker for fibrosis, tumor detection/characterization, and following/predicting therapy. To improve reliability including accuracy and reproducibility, researchers have validated this new technique in terms of image acquisition, data sampling, and analysis. The added value of DWI in contrastenhanced magnetic resonance imaging was established in the detection of malignant liver lesions. However, some limitations remain in terms of lesion characterization and fibrosis detection. Furthermore, the methodologies of image acquisition and data analysis have been inconsistent. Therefore, researchers should make every effort to not only improve accuracy and reproducibility but also standardize imaging parameters.

AIM: To develop a new sensitive and inexpensive hepatitis C virus (HCV) combination test (HCV Guideline test) that enables the determination of HCV genotypes 1, 2 and 3, and simultaneous determination of HCV viral load using commercial Amplicor GT HOV MONITOR test v2.0 (microwell version). METHODS: The HCV Guideline test used the PCR product generated in commercial Amplicor GT HCV Monitor test v2.0 for viral load measurement using microwell plate version of Amplicor HCV Monitor and also captured on separate plates containing capture probes and competitive oligonucleotide probes specific for HCV genotypes 1, 2 and 3, The HCV genotype was subsequently determined using the biotin-labeled PCR product and five biotin-labeled HCV-specific probes. RESULTS: The sensitivity of the HCV Guideline test was 0.5 KIU/mL. Specificity of the HCV Guideline test was confirmed by direct sequencing of HCV core region and molecular evolutionary analyses based on a panel of 31 samples. The comparison of the HCV Guideline test and an in-house HCV core genotyping assay using 252 samples from chronic hepatitis C patients indicated concordant results for 97.2% of samples (59.5% genotype 1, 33.7% genotype 2, 6.0% genotype 3, and 0.8% mixed genotypes). Similarly, the HCV Guideline test showed concordance with a serological test, and the serological test failed to assign any serotype in 12.7% of the samples, indicating a better sensitivity of the HCV Guideline test. CONCLUSION: Clinically, both viral load and genotypes (1, 2 and 3) have been found to be major predictors of antiviral therapy outcome regarding chronic hepatitis C based on guidelines and they are, in normal circumstances, performed as separate stand-alone assays. The HCV Guideline test is a useful method for screening large cohorts in a routine clinical setting for determining the treatment regimen and for predicting the outcome of antiviral therapy of chronic hepatitis C.

Growth rate has a direct impact on the productivity of nitride LED production. Atmospheric pressure growth of GaN with a growth rate as high as 10/zm/h and also *** growth of 1μm/h by using 4 inch by 11 production scale MOVPE are described. XRD of （002） and （102） direction was 200 arcsec and 250 arcsec, respectively. Impact of the growth rate on productivity is discussed.

Dislocation configurations in two single-crystal superalloys during high-temperature low-stress creep(1100 ° C,137 MP) were illustrated schematically with the use of transmission electron microscope(TEM).For an alloy with a small lattice misfit,the dislocations move in the combination of climbing and gliding *** the primary stage,the dislocations first move by slip in the γ-matrix *** they reach the γ’ cuboids,they move by climb along the γ’ *** the secondary creep stage,dislocation reorientation in the(001) interfacial planes happens slowly,deviating from the deposition orientation of to the misfit orientation of .For an alloy with a large lattice misfit,the dislocations are able to move smoothly by cross slip in the horizontal γ *** dislocation reorientation from the deposition orientation of to the misfit orientation of in the(001) interfacial planes can be completed in the primary creep stage.

＜正＞This paper presents the resistance model by the hydraulic experiment to understand the dynamic and unsteady behavior of a tsunami passing through a green-belt （mangrove） forest and the effectiveness of such a tsunami control forest in reducing its impact. A mangrove with a complex system consisting leaves, trunks and roots is simplified to the artificial model in the hydraulic experiment and put in an open channel. The water level, current and pressure at front and rear of the model are measured to clarify change of tsunami propagation due to the existence of a mangrove forest. Furthermore, the force act on the model was calculated by using the measured pressure. The drag coefficient, CD, and the inertia coefficient, CM, averaged over the model are estimated by using the Morison’s equation and separating the experimental data to the quasi-steady and the un-steady flow section. We find that the drag coefficient is proportional to essentially the volume occupied ratio. In the other experimental case, the results of numerical model for the tsunami propagation with the resistance model show good agreement with the measured wave profile at front and rear of the mangrove model, which shows that the effect on Tsunami of mangrove forest could be evaluated quantitatively by the resistance model depending on volume occupation ratio. It can make possible to calculate a tsunami inundation area in consideration of the mangrove green belt, which provides information on the mitigation plan and land-use management for reducing tsunami disaster without artificial constructions.

To grow high-quality and large-size monocrystalline silicon at low cost, we proposed a single-seed casting technique. To realize this technique, two challenges—polycrystalline nucleation on the crucible wall and dislocation multiplication inside the crystal—needed to be addressed. Numerical analysis was used to develop solutions for these challenges. Based on an optimized furnace structure and operating conditions from numerical analysis, experiments were performed to grow monocrystalline silicon using the single-seed casting technique. The results revealed that this technique is highly superior to the popular high-performance multicrystalline and multiseed casting mono-like techniques.
