Statistical Analyses and Geotechnical Evaluation of Nubia Sandstone, Golden Triangle Area, Egypt

Great efforts had been made to use indirect non-destructive tests in the geotechnical evaluation of rocks, especially sandstones, employing different empirical equations. However, most of these equations have been derived from hard and compacted sandstones data;therefore, the focus of this research is on weak and weakly compacted sandstones, aiming firstly to obtain empirical equations for estimating their characteristics, secondly to demonstrate and visualize the correlations between the studied variables, and finally to cluster the studied samples based on their characteristics. To attain these aims, twenty oriented block samples were collected from Nubia sandstone, central Eastern Desert, Golden Triangle area, Egypt. These samples were prepared and tested according to standard test methods, including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), Schmidt rebound number (SRN), porosity (n), bulk density (ρ), and ultrasonic P-wave velocity (UPV). The loss on ignition (LOI) was also employed as a physicochemical test for classifying the studied samples and indicating pores filling materials. The results revealed that these sandstones are characterized mainly by high n, low ρ, and low UPV values and these give an indication of weakly compacted and weakly cemented sandstone with shallow burial diagenetic conditions. Based on UCS and elastic modulus values, these sandstones are mainly classified as very low strength and highly yielding rocks. The results of regression analysis show satisfactory correlations between physical and mechanical characteristics, indicating the suitability of obtained empirical equations to deduce these properties. Enhancing the explosive characteristics of a Semtex explosive by involving admixtures of BCHMX and HMX

A well-known ternary plastic explosive,Czech Semtex 1H,contains a mixture of PETN and RDX softened by *** this work,BCHMX was used to replace PETN in Semtex 1H to form Sem-BC+*** addition,another mixture based on BCHMX and HMX as energetic fillers bonded by the polymeric matrix of Semtex 1H(Sem-BC+HMX)was *** particle size distribution of each individual explosive was determined to obtain the optimum mixing *** and impact sensitivities were *** velocity of detonation was reported practically and the detonation properties were calculated by EXPLO5 *** explosive strength of each sample was measured by the ballistic mortar *** conclusion confirms that the velocity of detonation of Sem-BC+HMX was the highest in comparison with the prepared ***-BC+RDX has the least impact and frictions ***-BC+RDX has higher detonation velocity,detonation properties and explosive strength than Semtex *** of BCHMX in Semtex 1H as a replacement for PETN is the candidate to produce a high performance advanced Czech plastic explosive.

Minimally Invasive 360 Degrees Decompression for Ligamentous, Bony and Discogenic Lumbar Canal Stenosis

Background: For decades, traditional open surgical techniques were used to treat lumbar disc herniation and lumbar canal stenosis (LCS). However, seeking for better outcomes for patients and avoiding extensive bony loss with its sequences had raised minimally invasive technique for treating these disorders as an alternative surgery. Methods: This is a retrospective study in which 54 patients of LCS were operated upon via unilateral minimally invasive technique to decompress the canal in a 360 degrees fashion through laminotomy, deroofing of opposite laminar side, sublaminar ligamintectomy, bilateral foraminotomies and discectomy. We used VAS scores and ODI to assess clinical outcomes with a period of one year follow-up. Results: Our results demonstrated that minimally invasive techniques for treating these disorders are effective procedures. Minimally invasive 360 degrees decompression for treating LCS had better outcomes regarding postoperative back pain, smaller incisions, less bony loss and early ambulation. Conclusion: Minimally invasive techniques for treating lumbar canal stenosis of different causes could be considered a better option instead of traditional full laminectomy with better outcomes as regards respecting the anatomical layers such as posterior spinal integrity and musculature, postoperative pain, accompanied with less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and shorter recovery periods.

Thoracoscopic internal mammary lymph nodes dissection: a staging tool for internal mammary lymph nodes in breast cancer

Objective： The aim of our study was to investigate the feasibility and safety of thoracoscopic internal mammary lymphadenectomy as a method to refine and thereby improve nodal staging in breast cancer. Methods： During the period from June 2004 to May 2007, 50 patients with operable breast cancer underwent modified radical mastectomy （MRM） or breast conserving surgery （BCS）, followed by thoracoscopic internal mammary lymphadenectomy, using 3 ports through the skin incision of the MRM or the BCS. Metal clips were used to mark precise site of lymphadenectomy. Results： of total number of 50 patients, the mean age of patients was 44 years （range, 27-60 years）. 40 （80%） had medio-central tumor, 10 （20%） had lateral tumor. 35 （70%） had clinically involved axillary nodes. 16 out of 50 patients received neo-adjuvant CTH. 44 patients underwent MRM and 6 patients underwent BCS. No intra-operative complications occurred. Atelectasis was the only postoperative complication that was encountered, which occurred in 12 cases, and was treated conservatively. The average chest drainage period was 1.2 day （range, 1-2 days）. The total number of IMN metastasis was 18 patients （36%）. The risk of IMN metastasis was higher; in younger patients （P = 0.03）, in medio-central tumors （P = 0.03）, in bigger tumors （P = 0.05）, with heavier metastasis of axillary LNs （P = 0.001）. But a correlation with the histological pattern of the lry tumor didn＇t exist （P = 1）. Knowing the IMN status helped in proper staging of patients, 7 patients showed evident stage migration after adding the IMN analysis to that of primary tumor and axillary LN. During the follow up period （the median, 22 months; range, 7 to 42 months）, no patient had pleural dissemination or port-site metastasis. Conclusion： Thoracoscopic IMN lymphadenectomy is a safe procedure, which can be done serious additional complications or cosmetic compromise. And allow proper nodal staging, which allow proper treatment planning.
