Introduction: Cochlear implant (CI) surgery allows hearing reestablishment among individuals with severe to prof.und hearing loss. However, only f.w patients will need a surgical reassessment. Objectives: To verif. the incidence of.surgical reassessment among adult patients;to verif. the reasons that led the second surgery to be perf.rmed;to verif. the ef.icacy—and audiological outcomes—of.revisional surgery. Method: A longitudinal retrospective cohort study was carried out with the review of.medical records, of.adult patients, with bilateral severe to prof.und sensorineural hearing loss who underwent to revisional surgery, f.om 2004 to 2016 at a CI Center, in Brazil. Results: One hundred f.f.y-eight CI surgeries were perf.rmed among 137 adult patients. f.urteen revisional surgeries were perf.rmed among 10 patients: f.ve surgeries were due by displacement of.the internal unit;one because of.having excessive subcutaneous tissue;one due to non-progression of.the electrodes during the initial surgery, one late tympanic membrane perf.ration, one late f.cial palsy and, one due to a suture dehiscence in the surgical incision with exposure of.the internal unit. Conclusions: The incidence of.surgical reassessment among adult CI patients was 8.9%. All implanted patients that underwent a new surgical approach maintained an improved auditory threshold af.er revisional CI surgery.

The cochlear implant is a prosthesis that is capable to replace listening capability among patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Many studies suggest a negative relationship among duration of.sound deprivation and audiometric gain (by means of.speech perception test) af.er cochlear implantation. We evaluated surgical and audiologic results among post-lingual deaf.ned adults, in dif.erent times of.sound deprivation, and correlated with social isolation, presence of.vertigo or tinnitus, and the speech therapy yield, between pre- and post-operative stages. A retrospective study was conducted on patients with post-lingual hearing loss, aged over 18 years old who underwent cochlear implant surgery in a public hospital f.om 2004 to 2014. Audiological, socio-demographic questionnaire, and manif.stations of.vertigo and tinnitus, during pre- and post-operative stages, were compared and correlating to the dif.erent periods of.sound deprivation. Two groups were studied. The group A was composed of.38 participants (14 male and 24 f.male) with sound deprivation of.less than 10 years;and group B was composed of.17 participants (8 male and 9 f.male) with sound deprivation longer than 10 years. We f.und no dif.erences regarding age, sex, duration of.sound deprivation, mean pure-tone audiometric results (pre- and post-surgery), and speech perception tests (pre-operatively). Af.er one year of.the surgery, we observed a signif.cant dif.erence between both groups, with a better perf.rmance to group A. The results of.speech perception test, af.er cochlear implantation in group B, were worse than the results obtained in group A, although these correlations are not determinant whether to perf.rm cochlear implant surgery or not.

The regulation of.plant transpiration is a key f.ctor af.ecting transpiration ef.iciency, growth and adaptation of.Eucalyptus species to limited water availability in tropical and subtropical environments. However, f.w studies have related this trait to the perf.rmance of.Eucalyptus seedlings and none have investigated the inf.uence of.vapor pressure def.cit (VPD) on transpiration rates and growth. In this study, the transpiration and growth responses of.seedlings of.Eucalyptus urophylla (S.T. Blake) and Eucalyptus cloeziana (f. Muell.) to progressive soil water def.cits were evaluated under semi-controlled conditions using the f.action of.transpirable soil water (f.SW) method. In addition, the inf.uence of.VPD on seedling transpiration, development and growth was also investigated. The f.SW threshold ranged f.om 0.40 to 0.99 f.r the transpiration rate and f.om 0.32 to 0.97 f.r the development and growth variables. Little or no changes in the f.SW threshold were detected in response to changes in atmospheric VPD. Both Eucalyptus species presented a conservation strategy under drought stress. In addition, water-conserving mechanisms during the seedling phase were related to rapid stomatal closure, reduced leaf.area, and number of.leaves.

The purpose of.the current study was to evaluate the ef.ect of.a high-f.t （Hf. diet, energy restriction and exercise on the expression of.vascular endothelial growth f.ctor （VEGf., angiopoietin （Ang） I and 2, and their receptors in rat corpus cavernosum （CC）. Male Wistar rats were f.d adlibitum with an H f.diet f.r 8 or 16 weeks. Af.er 8 weeks of.the H f.diet, a group of.rats was subjected to energy restriction with or without exercise f.r 8 weeks. Control animals had f.ee access to standard diet f.r the same period. Af.er euthanasia, blood was collected and the penises removed f.r immunof.uorescence assays （VEGf. VEGf.receptor （VEGf.） I and 2, Angl, Ang2 and Tie2） and semiquantif.cation of.VEGf. VEGf. 1, VEGf.2, Angl, Ang2, Tie2, endothelial nitric oxide synthase （eNOS） and Aktlphospho-Akt by Western blotting. Hf.diet-f.d rats exhibited lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol （HDL-c） levels, higher systolic blood pressure and an increased atherogenic index. A signif.cant increase in Ang2 expression in the CC was verif.ed and coupled to a decrease in VEGf.and VEGf.s. The Akt pathway was activated by the Hf.diet. Energy restriction and exercise increased eNOS expression and restored most Hf.diet-induced modif.cations except f.r VEGf.2 expression. These results emphasize the role of.diet on vascular f.nction regulation, demonstrating that cavernous imbalance of.VEGf.VEGf.s and Angs/Tie2 systems occurs bef.re serum lipid changes and obesity onset, antedating structural atherosclerotic f.atures.

Background: Neurof.bromatosis type 2 (Nf.) is a rare syndrome and it is usually presented with bilateral vestibular schwannomas (VS), multiple meningiomas, and other types of.tumors associated to peripheral nerves. Hearing loss is one of.its leading manif.stations, and surgery f.r removal of.the tumor is of.en required. Cochlear implant (CI) surgery is an option f.r auditory rehabilitation and long latency auditory potentials (P300) are becoming a very usef.l tool to assess hearing outcomes. Objective: To verif. the presence of.P300 waves during auditory and cortical f.nction assessment in a patient submitted to VS removal and CI surgery. Design: Retrospective chart review. Case Report: A 62 years old male patient, presented at the clinic with a bilateral severe to prof.und hearing loss, worst at the right side. MRI scan revealed bilateral expansive tumor within the internal auditory canal expanding to cerebellopontine angle, suggestive of.VS. Tumor was removed at the right side, and CI surgery was indicated f.r the lef. ear. P300 tests were perf.rmed pre-operatively, at the moment of.activation, and 6 months post-operatively. Af.er CI activation, P300 waves appeared, and presented reduced latency and increased amplitude af.er 6 months of.CI use. Conclusion: P300 waves appear to be dependent on the auditory stimulus to be generated, showing that it can be a usef.l tool to estimate improvement in cortical cognitive f.nction af.er restoring hearing through CI surgery af.er VS removal.

Precipitation isotope ratios(O and H)record the history of.water phase transitions and f.actionation processes during moisture transport and rainf.ll ***,we evaluated the isotopic composition of.precipitation over the central-southeastern region of.Brazil at dif.erent *** isotopic compositions were associated with classical ef.ects(rainf.ll amount,seasonality,and continentality),demonstrating the importance of.vapor recirculation processes and dif.erent regional atmospheric systems(South American Convergence Zone-SACZ and Cold f.onts-Cf..While moisture recycling and regional atmospheric processes may also be observed on a daily timescale,classical ef.ects such as the amount ef.ect were not strongly correlated(δ^(18)O-precipitation rate r≤-0.37).Daily variability revealed specif.c climatic f.atures,such asδ^(18)O depleted values(~-6‰to-8‰)during the wet season were associated with strong convective activity and large moisture *** isotopic analysis revealed the role of.dif.erent moisture sources and transport *** ratios combined with d-excess explain how atmospheric recirculation processes interact with convective activity during rainf.ll f.rmation *** f.ndings provide a new understanding of.rainf.ll sampling timescales and highlight the importance of.water isotopes to decipher key hydrometeorological processes in a complex spatial and temporal context in central-southeastern Brazil.
