Short-term microbial responses to soluble inorganic P input in a tropical lowland rain forest in Amazonia

The effectiveness of different wear indicators in quantifying wear on railway wheels of freight wagons

Railway infrastructure relies on the dynamic interaction between wheels and rails;thus,assessing wheel wear is a critical aspect of maintenance and *** paper focuses on the wheel-rail wear indicator T-gamma(Tγ).Amidst its use,it becomes apparent that Tγ,while valuable,fails to provide a comprehensive reflection of the actual material removal and actual contact format,which means that using only Tγas a target for optimization of profiles is not *** this work,three different freight wagons are evaluated:a meter-gauge and a broad-gauge heavy haul vehicles from South American railways,and a standard-gauge freight vehicle operated in europe,with different axle loads and dissimilar new wheel/rail *** vehicles are subjected to comprehensive multibody simulations on various *** simulations aimed to elucidate the intricate relationship between different wear indicators:Tγ,wear index,material removal,and maximum wear depth,under diverse curves,non-compensated lateral accelerations(A_(nc)),and *** findings showed a correlation of 0.96 between Tγand wear depth and 0.82 between wear index and material removed for the outer *** the results,the Tγis better than the wear index to be used when analyzing wear depth while the wear index is more suited to foresee the material *** results also show the low influence of A_(nc)on wear index and Tγ.By considering these factors together,the study aims to improve the understanding of wheel-rail wear by selecting the best wear analysis approaches based on the effectiveness of each parameter.

Five Year Follow up after Surgical Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes with Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Associated with a Duodenal Ileal Interposition

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is a chronic disease, primarily caused by a combination of defective insulin secretion and the inability of insulin-sensitive tissues to respond to insulin. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy associated with duodenal ileal interposition (SGDII) has been shown to be a feasible treatment option for patients with T2D, as it provides improvement and control of glycemia, dyslipidemia and arterial hypertension. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mid and long-term results of SGDII for the treatment of diabetic patients, considering diabetic remission, weight loss and postoperative complications. materials and methods: Retrospective study with 96 patients with T2D submitted to SGDII, between 2010 and 2016. The glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) value Results: Sixty-one patients (62.8%) were male, and 36 patients (37.2%) were female. The average age was 50.9 years. median BmI was 33.43 kg/m2. The incidence of major postoperative complications in the first 30 days was 2.1%, with no mortality. Dyslipidemia control was sustained, after five years, in 62% of the patients. The five years follow-up demonstrated that 80% of patients had T2D remission at one year, 74.5% at three years and 61.8% at five years. Univariate analysis demonstrated that preoperative values of HbA1c and BmI, preoperative use of insulin, gender, and 30-day complication were not predictors of remission at all study intervals. The average duration of the disease was nine years and the mean glycated hemoglobin before surgery was 8.95%. Conclusion: SGDII resulted in good glycemic control at 5-years follow-up and represents a valid alternative for the treatment of T2D.

Feasibility of performing the 3-minute step test with remote supervision in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis: A comparative study

Importance:The 3-min step test is a simple option to monitor submaximal exercise capacity,although its use via remote video monitoring has not been investigated in children with cystic fibrosis(CF).Objective:This study aimed to assess the feasibility and reproducibility of performing the 3-min step test with remote ***:A cross-sectional study including CF patients(6-18 years)from two CF services were ***,anthropometric,clinical,and lung function data were collected and two 3-min step tests were performed:(i)in-person supervision,and(ii)remotely supervised by video *** and after the tests,heart rate(HR),oxygen saturation(SpO_(2)),and the Borg score for dyspnea and lower limb fatigue were ***:Twenty-three patients(10.7±3.7 years)with a mean FeV1 of 89.5%±23.2%were *** were no significant differences between tests,with mean differences(95%confidence intervals)in final HR of-3.3(-8.9,2.4),change in HR of-1.9(-6.1,2.1),final SpO_(2) of 0.3(-0.4,1.0),and final dyspnea of 0.1(-0.8,0.9).The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.852(final HR),0.762(final SpO_(2)),and 0.775(final lower limb fatigue).Significant and moderate correlations were found between tests for final HR(r=0.75),change in HR(r=0.61),and final SpO_(2)(r=0.61).The Bland-Altman analysis showed a mean difference in final SpO_(2) between tests of 0.3%(limit of agreement-3.0%,3.5%).Interpretation:Physiological responses between tests were similar,indicating it was feasible to perform the 3-min step test with remote supervision in CF children.

In-Hospital Outcomes in minimally Invasive mitral Valve Surgery: First Results in a Brazilian Single Center

Introduction: Treatments for cardiovascular diseases have increasingly evolved with the tendency to offer minimally invasive or transcatheter procedures instead of conventional sternotomy surgery. In this context, we highlight minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (mImVS), which has been shown to be an increasingly solid option with some superior results when compared to the conventional technique: better pain control, shorter hospital stays, shorter recovery time, shorter readmission rate in the first postoperative year, better aesthetic results, and lower overall cost. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the stages of mImVS, by primary mitral valve consultation, in our service and compare these results with data from the literature. methods: All electronic medical records of patients who underwent mImVS for primary mitral valve injury in the encore Hospital from January 2020 to February 2023 were analyzed. Tabulation and statistical analysis were performed using the microsoft excel® program. Quantitative variables were presented as means, standard deviations. Results: 46 patients were enrolled in our study (Age: 59.1 ± 12.4 years old;60.8% Female, BmI: 26 ± 4.4 Kg/m2, Low risk STS score: 82.6%). The observed 30-day mortality was 2.1%, plastic rate of 23.9%, blood transfusion rate of 41.3%, length of stay in an intensive care bed (ICB) of 3.3 ± 3.3 days and hospital stay of 6.4 ± 5.1 days. Conclusions: We noticed that the mImVS results carried out in our service agree with data from national and international literature with approximately 1.3 days more hospitalization in ICB.

Objective: To evaluate the structural and chemical composition of plant and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities promoted by hexanic, ethanolic and ethyl acetate fractions obtained from leaves of Conocarpus ***: Organic fractions were characterized through UPLC-mS and *** potential was performed through DPPH and molybdenum phosphate *** and antifungal assays were performed in accordance with Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute ***: The obtained biomass of Conocarpus erectus leaves showed the high presence of glucose(0.45 g/L), cellulose(28.69%), Na(55.126 μg/L) and K(31.163 μg/L).We identified seven compounds in the hexanic and ethyl acetate fractions, and eight compounds in ethanolic ***, phenolic compounds are prevalent in all organic fractions with values of(10.04 ± 0.24),(221.26 ± 1.84),(340.53 ± 0.84) mg/g GAe to hexanic, ethyl acetate and ethanolic fraction, *** results showed a high potential in ethyl acetate fraction(71.82 ± 6.87)% and(10.89 ± 0.05)% in DPPH and molybdenum phosphate techniques, *** ethanolic fraction showed moderate bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and presented a high fungistatic potential for all Candida species ***: Organic fractions obtained from leaves of Conocarpus erectus present antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and these findings contribute to scientific information for the effectiveness on use of this plant in the development of a phytotherapic compound.
