Since 2015, community forests have been promoted in Togo as an alternative to protect areas from degradation and as a means of contributing to forest landscape restoration. The study focuses on the Nakpadjouak Community Forest (NCF) in Tami (Togo, West Africa) which contributes to community forests sustainable management. It aims in (i) mapping forest ecosystems and analysing their dynamic and (ii) characterizing the floristic diversity of the NCF. The ecosystems were mapped and their dynamic was evaluated based on Google Earth images of 2014 and 2020. Floristic and forestry inventories were carried out using the transect technique in a sample of 20 plots of 50 m × 20 m. The NCF was made up mainly by wooded/shrub savannahs (95.37%) and croplands/fallow (4.63%) in 2014. These two land use types undergone changes over the 6 years prior to 2020. By 2020, the NCF had 3 land use types: wooded/shrub savannahs (77.59%), open forest/wooded savannahs (22.23%), and croplands/fallows (0.18%). A total of 89 plant species belonging to 70 genera and 28 families were recorded within the NCF. The dominant species are: Heteropogon contortus (L.) ***. and Combretum collinum Fresen. followed by Pteleopsissuberosa Engl. & Diels, Annona senegalensis Pers. The most common species are: Lannea acida ***. s.l., A. senegalensis, Vitellaria paradoxa *** subsp. paradoxa, C. collinum and Acacia dudgeonii Craib ex Holland. Due to its small area of just 40 hectares and its diverse plant life, this community forest of Savannahs Region is a significant biodiversity hotspot and warrants conservation efforts.

This study focuses on the landscape dynamics of the savannahs’ region in the far north of Togo. Based on a literature review and satellite images analysis using GIS and remote sensing, the study aims to ascertain the effects of anthropogenic threats on the forest coverage of the Savannahs’ Region between 1984 to 2020. The objective is to clarify the dynamics of land use in the region from 1984 to 2000 and from 2000 to 2020. The findings indicate a significant decline in forest coverage within the region from 1984 to 2020, a trend attributed to land use patterns. Dry forests in the Savannah region are largely converted to farmlands, housing, dry savannahs or agroforestry parks, leading to a steady reduction in forest areas.

Zinc deficiency in patients with chronic pancreatitis

BACKGROUND Zinc is a key element in numerous proteins and plays an important role in essential cell functions such as defense against free radicals and DNA damage repair. Chronic pancreatitis(CP) is a chronic inflammation with progressive fibrosis of pancreas ultimately resulting in pancreatic exocrine insufficiency(PEI),which is associated with malnutrition. Studies analyzing zinc levels in patients with CP are sparse and lead to conflicting *** To investigate serum zinc levels in patients with CP of various *** Between October 2015 and March 2018, patients with a diagnosis of CP were identified and recruited from the Pancreatic Outpatient Clinic at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were analyzed. Etiology of CP was determined according to the MANNHEIM classification system into the following etiological subcategories:alcohol consumption, nicotine consumption, hereditary factors, efferent pancreatic duct factors and immunological factors. Pancreatic exocrine function was defined as normal(fecal elastase 1 > 200 μg/g), mildly reduced(100-200μg/g) and severely reduced(fecal elastase 1 0.002]. Smoking and number of packyears were additionally associated with low zinc levels. Cultural landscapes all over the world harbor species communities that are taxonomically and functionally *** Eastern Europe,but also in many other regions of the world,the conservation of this farmland biodiversity is threatened by land use intensification and *** order to counteract the negative effects of land use change in such landscapes,a thorough understanding of the functional relationships between species and their environment is *** this study,we investigated the relationship of functional traits of butterfly and bird communities and environmental conditions in 120 sites in traditional farmlands of southern Transylvania,***,we compared taxonomic diversity(i.e.,Shannon diversity)with functional diversity(i.e.,functional dispersion),and second,we linked species traits to environmental variables by performing RLQ *** traits indicating reproduction,movement,and feeding behavior related with environmental variables describing heterogeneity,amount of woody vegetation,and topography at three different spatial *** found positive relationships between taxonomic and functional diversity,as well as strong linkages between species traits and environmental conditions for both ***,butterfly composition was most strongly influenced by land use type and life-history *** composition was most strongly related to the amount of woody vegetation and nesting and foraging *** conclude that maintaining the typical features of traditional farming landscapes,especially a small-scale heterogeneity in arable land and gradients of woody vegetation cover,would be desirable in order to sustain a high functional diversity in southern Transylvania in the future.

Diffractive optical elements(DOEs)have a wide range of applications in optics and photonics,thanks to their capability to perform complex wavefront shaping in a compact ***,widespread applicability of DOEs is still limited,because existing fabrication methods are cumbersome and ***,we present a simple and cost-effective fabrication approach for solid,high-performance *** method is based on conjugating two nearly refractive index-matched solidifiable transparent *** index matching allows for extreme scaling up of the elements in the axial dimension,which enables simple fabrication of a template using commercially available 3D printing at tens-of-micrometer *** demonstrated the approach by fabricating and using DOEs serving as microlens arrays,vortex plates,including for highly sensitive applications such as vector beam generation and super-resolution microscopy using MINSTED,and phase-masks for three-dimensional single-molecule localization *** the advantage of making DOEs widely accessible by drastically simplifying their production,the method also overcomes difficulties faced by existing methods in fabricating highly complex elements,such as high-order vortex plates,and spectrum-encoding phase masks for microscopy.
