No plant functional diversity effects on foliar fungal pathogens in experimental tree communities

Foliar fungal pathogens affect forest ecosystem processes by exerting highly species-specific impacts on growth and survival of *** many ecosystem processes in forests depend on functional diversity of specific tree species,a close relationship is expected between this and foliar fungal pathogen *** for such a relationship in the German tree diversity experiment bIOTREE(bechstedt),we hypothesized that pathogen richness and pathogen load decline with increasing functional diversity of tree *** macro-and microscopic analyses,we assessed pathogen richness and load on 16 tree species in plots that,although differing in functional diversity,had the same tree species *** found no effects of functional diversity on pathogen richness or ***,we encountered strong species identity effects in plot species composition,as susceptible tree species contributed positively to each community’s pathogen richness and ***,testing for effects of particular leaf traits and geographical range size of host species revealed a significant effect of total leaf phenolics,which was unexpected as pathogen richness increased with increasing content in *** study showed that at the community level,host species’identity was more important for foliar fungal pathogen richness and load than the functional diversity of host *** positive relationship between pathogen richness and phenolics in leaves,along with the finding that pathogen richness is very much conserved in tree species,point to an evolutionary arms race between hosts and fungi resulting from fungi increasing their capacity to infect tree leaves and trees boosting their defences.

AID expression increased by TNF-α is associated with class switch recombination of Igα gene in cancers

Recently, immunoglobulins （Igs） were unexpectedly found to be expressed in epithelial cancers. Immunoglobulin class switching or class switch recombination （CSR） is a natural biological process that alters a b cell＇s production of antibodies （immunoglobulins） from one class to another. However, the mechanism of CSR of Iggenes in cancer is still unknown. Here, we confirmed by detecting the hallmark of CSR that the Iga gene in cancer underwent CSR. Then we focused on activation-induced cytidine deaminase （AID）, a crucial factor for initiating CSR. Further studies using tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-α stimulation and specific inhibitor of NF-Kb revealed that TNF-α could increase AID expression through NF-κb signaling. Finally, we demonstrated that AID could co-localize with protein kinase A and bind to the switching （Sα） region of the Igα gene. Overexpression of AID obviously enhanced Igα heavy chain expression and its binding ability to the Sa region. These findings indicated that TNF-α-induced AID expression is involved with CSR in cancer.

Immunoglobulins （Igs） are known to be synthesized and secreted only by b lymphocytes. Class switch recombination （CSR） is a key event that enables b cells to express Igs, and one of the crucial steps for CSR initiation is the germline transcription of Iggenes. Surprisingly, recent studies have demonstrated that the Iggenes are also expressed in some epithelial cancer cells; however, the mechanisms underlying how cancer cells initiate CSR and express Igs are still unknown. In this study, we confirmed that the Ig la I promoter in cancer cell lines was activated by the Ets- 1 transcription factor, and the activity of the Ig la I promoter and ig lal-C^l germiine transcription were attenuated after knockdown of Ets-1 by specific small interfering RNAs （siRNA）. Furthermore, the expression of Ets-1 and Iga heavy chain in cancer cells was dose dependently upregulated by TGF-I^I. These results indicate that activation of the Ig lal promoter by the transcriotion factor Ets-1 is a critical Dathwav and orovides a novel mechanism for le exoression in non-b cell cancers.

A View on Stochastic Finite Element and Geostatistics for Resource Parameters Estimation

The resource parameter estimation using stochastic finite element, geostatistics etc. is a key point on uncertainty, risk analysis, optimization [1-5] etc. In this view, the paper presents some consideration on: 1) Stochastic finite element estimation. The concept of random element is simplified as a stochastic finite element (SFE) taking into account a parallelepiped element with eight nodes in which are given the probability density functions (pdf) on its point supports. In this context it is shown: a—the stochastic finite element is a linear interpolator, related to the distributions given at each nodes;b—the distribution pdf in whatever point x ∈ V;c—the estimation of the mean value of Z(x);2) Volume integrals calculus;3) SFE in geostatistics approaches;4) SFE in PDE solution. Finally, some conclusions are presented underlying the importance of SFE

background:Our knowledge of avian brood parasitism is primarily based on studies of a few selected ***,researchers have targeted a wider range of host–parasite systems,which has allowed further evaluation of hypotheses derived from well-known study systems but also disclosed adaptations that were previously *** we present developmental and behavioral data on the previously undescribed Plaintive Cuckoo(Cacomantis merulinus) nestling and one of its hosts,the Common Tailorbird(Orthotomus sutorius).Methods:We discovered more than 80 Common Tailorbird nests within an area of 25 km2,and we recorded nestling characteristics,body mass,tarsus length and begging display every 3 days for both ***:Plaintive Cuckoo nestlings followed a developmental pathway that was relatively similar to that of their well-studied relative,the Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus).Tailorbird foster siblings were evicted from the nest *** cuckoo nestlings gained weight faster than host nestlings,and required 3–9 days longer time to fledge than host *** was high during the early stages of development,but the nestlings acquired a warning display around 11 days in the nest,after which none of the studied cuckoo nestlings were *** cuckoos' begging display,which appeared more intense than that of host nestlings,was initially vocally similar with that of the host nestlings but began to diverge from the host sound output after day ***:The developmental data on Plaintive Cuckoo nestlings and their tailorbird host builds an important foundation for future work on the co-evolutionary interactions in this parasite–host system.

Aims Although shrubs are an important component of forests,their role has not yet been considered in forest biodiversity *** the biodiversity-ecosystem functioning(bEF)experiment with subtropical tree species in south-east China(bEF-China),we factorially combined tree with shrub species-diversity ***,we tested the hypotheses that shrub survival differs between the 10 planted shrub species,with lower survival rates of late-than early-successional species and is affected by environmental conditions,such as topography and top soil characteristics,as well as by biotic factors,represented by tree,shrub and herb layer *** We analyzed the survival of 42000 shrub individuals in 105 plots varying in tree and shrub species richness of the bEF-China project four years after *** survival was analyzed with generalized linear mixed effects models at the level of individuals and with variance partitioning at the plot *** intercept and random slope models of different explanatory variables were compared with respect to the bayesian Information Criterion(bIC).Important Findings Survival rates differed largely between the 10 shrub species,ranging from 26%to 91%for Ardisia crenata and Distylium buxifolium,*** of species identity,single abiotic factors explained up to 5%of species survival,with a negative effect of altitude and slope inclination and a positive effect of the topsoil carbon to nitrogen ratio,which pointed to drought as the major cause of shrub *** contrast,neither tree nor shrub richness affected shrub survival at this early stage of the *** the biotic predictors,only herb layer species richness and cover of the dominant fern species(Dicranopteris pedata)affected shrub ***,our models that included all variables could explain about 65%in shrub survival,with environmental variables being most influential,followed by shrub species identity,while tree speci

Gastrointestinal ultrasound is a practical, safe, cheap and reproducible diagnostic tool in inflammatorybowel disease gaining global prominence amongst clinicians. Understanding the embryological processes of the intestinal tract assists in the interpretation of abnormal sonographic findings. In general terms, the examination principally comprises interrogation of the colon, mesentery and small intestine using both lowfrequency and high-frequency probes. Interpretation of findings on GIUS includes assessment of bowel wall thickness, symmetry of this thickness, evidence of transmural changes, assessment of vascularity using Doppler imaging and assessment of other specific features including lymph nodes, mesentery and luminal motility. In addition to b-mode imaging, transperineal ultrasonography, elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography are useful adjuncts. This supplement expands upon these features in more depth.
